I can easily get two big meals out of the small fish and chips because the portions are insane. The tartar sauce is hands down the best around. I always buy extra when we stop in and I'd happily beg for the recipe. This visit we also tried the clam cakes and chowder. The clam cakes were huge and clearly made with fresh clams. They were a little gritty this time, but not enough for me to deduct any stars. The chowder was perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious. Some of the best I've had in a long time. I was so looking forward to this but it was very disappointing. They are right on the main road which is a plus. Got there about 20 past 7. They close at 8 so they said we couldn't eat in at the picnic like tables they have and we needed to take it to go. Bummer but ok. Waited a while and then brought the food back home. As someone from Fall River new to the area i was concerned to find a new fish spot this time of year. Gene's is going to be my go to spot! Just a medium take out order by my goodness it was so good! The fish was fried to order, it was fresh, flakey not greasy at all! The woman working was kind and it's cute inside. Maybe ownership will see this after getting no response from an email address on the website. On Saturday August 2, I was going to the Portuguese festival with my wife. Encouraged by the proximity of Gene's, we left the festival and got to the parking lot. I pulled in at 759, doors were locked. Earlier in the day I made sure to check the website to make sure the restaurant was open, and it was until 9. Front door locked. Employee came to ask if I placed an order, I said no, he said because it was a slow evening they were closing early. I was in shock. Driving from Framingham to my favorite seafood restaurant with my wife. I was crushed. I asked the employee to respect the hours of operation and he just said to come back when we are open. This is a small place off of Route 6. It's not fancy in fact they have picnic tables and benches inside. But they have very good seafood and good french fries. I love their tartar sauce it's excellent! I found the breading on the fish to be a little heavy but I still thought the fish was excellent. Gene's Famous Seafood truly is a local gem. I've been eating here for as long as I can remember. The food is always delicious and the servings are very generous. The staff here are absolutely amazing! If you can I suggest calling ahead, especially on a Friday night. Otherwise expect close to a 20 min wait. The food and service is well worth it either way! If you are looking for a TON of seafood then you should definitely stop here. I ordered the fisherman's platter and I have NEVER seen such a huge plate. Three people struggled to finish it along with a large fried scallop box/clam chowder. The seafood was good- not amazing, but for what we got- I was very pleased. The scallops were enormous, the clams were of average size, and the shrimps were pretty good. I've never said this before, but we had TOO MANY scallops. We ended up taking about 7 home because we were too stuffed. Everything was breaded correctly and had a great crunch. The chowder tasted more like potato soup but it was okay. Been a year since I've been here ..... Fish & Chips are now either SMALL or LARGE .... (no medium size) Small was plenty for me ...... they give 2 small pieces of fish with a good amount of fries. Clam strips are a bit pricey but delicious ..... no chewy texture like some places. The only thing missing from this place is 'WHITE VINEGAR" ...... well thats what I love on my fries ! ( to each his own).... however, if you like malt vinegar, (Like many places serve, your in luck!) Great place to recommend to tourists coming to this area. Ok so genes has been around forever so I've been there many times to pick up orders since I was a teen. The food is usually pretty good BUT recently I ordered the genes seafood platter and large fish n chips. Now idk if it an isolated incident or on purpose but the portion seemed much small than usual plus the food was a little over cooked while have a wet steamed feel to it like it sat in a container to long and I only live 2 minutes away so it's not because of me. It's just disappointing because I spend all that money for a meh meal and what made it worse was my mother was visiting and never had it so I treated her since I've bragged about them to her so it made me look bad. At Gene's you order at a counter, pay for the food, sit down at a picnic table, and wait for them to call your name. You will then get the best fried seafood in the MA South Coast. The portions are very large, so most people will have trouble eating it all. If you don't want fried seafood, don't go here, there is nothing else. They serve beer, wine, and soda from cans.
