This is the only decent place in my opinion and all of Westport except for maybe The Westporter. All the LaFrance properties are a solid C minus.. You'll spend more time bumping into friends here than looking at the menu. The deviled eggs and their fish dishes are always great choices. My only complaint and really my only complaint is their ribeye.. I've tried it twice as my friends enjoy it and I've been disappointed both times. It is a thin cut, about half an inch. If you are used to ordering your ribeye medium rare, I strongly suggest that you order it medium well or well done. It is a very poor grade of meat and awfully grizzly. No beautifully marbled fat. When cooked medium rare, it is basically inedible. It is more akin to a Denny's breakfast steak than a steakhouse steak. It is served on a bed of french fries. The best thing they can do is get a better steak and charge $70 for it rather than $40. Stick with the fish and you'll have a great night. read more

I asked the hostess if I could still snag a table for two, even though I was flying solo for the moment, and she smiled and said, "No problem." Honestly? Bless her. Some places treat you like you're trying to pull off a bank heist if your full party isn't present. The vibe? Laid-back coastal cool with just enough buzz to feel alive without needing to shout over the table. The kitchen's wide open, so you can watch the culinary chaos--or genius--unfold. And that view? Pure postcard. Boats gently bobbing in the bay, sun dipping low like it's trying to flirt with the horizon. You will feel like you're in a Nicholas Sparks novel--but with better food. While I waited, they brought me a tiny bowl of house-made pickles. Tiny bowl, big flavor. Thick-cut, briny, just the right amount of pucker. I sipped on a Buzzards Bay Local Flounder--golden, smooth, and perfect for a summer evening. Then I got bold and ordered the "Deviled Eggs from Hell." And By the power of Greyskull and questionable life choices, they did not disappoint! Light, flaky, spicy little flavor bombs. If Hell is serving these, hand me a pitchfork. Drenched in hoisin, coconut milk, and spice--like Thai street food met a Cape Cod fisherman and made magic. We stopped in for a quick snack and ordered the 4 stuffies for $15. They were delicious! They had a great texture, not dry, with a heavy chorizo flavor. Good spot to chill by the water after a long day at the beach. They have a number of different seating options outside. Food prices are in the $20-$40 range. We got the classic fish and chips and the grilled swordfish. The fish and chips were quite good. The fish was lightly battered and fried just right. Service was very good. When someone asks me where to go in Westport or Dartmouth, the Back Eddy is always my first recommendation. I have been coming here for over 20 years and have honestly never had a bad meal. The seafood is fresh and the restaurant often uses local ingredients. I highly recommend the mussels (the flavor is amazing) and the One Eyed Jake (similar to a margarita but better imo). They added fried oysters to their menu this spring and they are the best I have ever had. Their corn clam chowder and their salads are fresh and tasty. I often get their fried fish sandwich and fries. New Bedford scallops are dusted, not heavily breaded, so one actually tastes the shellfish... and cooked to perfection. Oh, and the hand-cut fries? Best you can get, IMO! I started to give it 5 stars but then thought, well is really the best place you've been to? But then breaking it down to food, service & atmosphere what would I deduct from? The service really was outstanding, down to the staff member who came by to check on how my cocktail was because it didn't look the right color and brought me more grapefruit juice "just in case". The atmosphere was lovely with the decor and given you're on the docks. But my dish, the basic fish and chips... light batter, perfectly seasoned, sweet cod cooked to perfection. Hand cut fries... we also had the fried oysters cooked perfectly as well, and the stuffed clams that were not traditional quahogs per se, light and smokey with corn and chorizo. We have eaten here many times over many years and found the food and service to be great. Not this time. Arrived at 7 on a Saturday evening. Place was only a third full. I have a dairy allergy so I checked with the hostess when we entered and was assured that it would not be a problem. Initially seated at a table with 8 people talking very loudly. Asked to move to another table which we did. Waiter arrived and seemed very hurried. When I asked about dairy free options she said the 2 options were the vegetarian entree or a salad. I asked about some of the fish and she seemed annoyed that she would have to check with the kitchen. Came back and said the sword fish wouldn't work because it came with mashed potatoes and when I asked if they could substitute a different potato she rudely responded that there were no substitutions. We first went for a remembrance celebration for two great people. The restaurant treated us well and service was great. We had the back of the bar for our gathering and four apps. The appetizers disappeared quickly as they were so good BUT were constantly being replenished so we had all we could want. Apps: Amazing, perfectly steamed shrimp Fresh and tasty bruschetta Cod cakes- only item which was okay Chowder- very, very good We hung around for a long time and they were in no hurry for us to leave. It was a beautiful day in October and we spent a fair amount if time on the decks outside. Part 2: The Return The party continued at one of the remembers homes up Main. As dinnertime arrived, my husband, two cousins, and I returned to Back Eddys. We had a great meal! The deviled eggs are a MUST! Superb. My husband and I split the Atlantic Salmon which was very good. Our cousins had fish also: one swordfish and one fish and chips. They too were very pleased. I would skip the side of cole slaw if looking to add some veggies. Service for round two was great even though it was crowded. We had family up the street. Westport Point is dear to us and holds many memories. We love taking trips out to the surrounding areas and finding little hole in the walls for lunch adventures. On our first trip out to Westport, we found the Back Eddy and ducked in. When we got there initially, they had just reopened for the season and everything was fresh, new, and ready for the year. Our first trip was excellent. We were delighted with their quirky offering of house made pickles instead of table bread, and they were uniquely seasoned. He had the classic fish and chips and I had the lobster roll. Everything was good but not really anything out of the ordinary. The stand out feature was the service, which was fast and friendly, and the view which was beautiful. On our return visit, we had the honkey fries, the cod sandwich and the Pho. The service wasn't as good, the cod was a little soggy, and the pho was dismal. The pho had almost no seasoning, the noodles were so overcooked you couldn't even pick them up with chopsticks or a fork, and it took us like 20 minutes to flag someone down for a spoon. If I were a waitperson, I would notice that a customer didn't eat their food, and I would venture to them and inquire what was going on. Not here, the waitress just whisked away the things and brought the check, which we paid and left. Amazing how distinctly different experiences you can have at the same place for lunch. Perhaps they were just at the top of their game on our first visit, and this is where they actually are? Regardless, it's hit and miss, but prices are fair, parking is plentiful, and if you can get a table by the window, the views really are fabulous. read more

This was our first time there and went with friends that wanted to try it. The atmosphere was great. Drinks were good. The staff Amazing. Our poor server was having one of those days and forgot to put in my meal, but went above and beyond to compensate. She kept the drinks flowing, didn't charge me for the meal and she paid for my dessert (pineapple rice pudding that was yummy!!!). They far exceeded my expectations for a simple mistake. She even brought the dessert with candles and sang as we were celebrating all of our birthdays! Once I got the meal, it was delicious and worth the wait. Nice ride to a nice location. The food is very good along with the seaside location making this a destination. Only issue is the pricing for what you get. Supurb evening at the Back Eddy in Westport. We were quickly seated, narrowly missing a warm summer eve's dinner crowd. Our server, Blythe was very pleasant and engaging during our visit. Our appetizers were excellent, stuffed clams and chowder. Our main course of swordfish and fish and chips were scrumptious. The fish, was lightly battered and delicious. Perfect setting and wonderful food. I've been going to the Back Eddy for over 20 years. It is always a high point of the summer for me.

I would not run back, but I would certainly come back. Our dinner started with one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. The outdoor seating was well spaced out, perfectly positioned towards the setting sun and had a personal hand sanitizer, great touch! If you are sitting outside make sure to bring bug spray because you will be attacked by no-see'em bugs. The Margarita had too much salt, but tasted great. I ordered stuffed clams which came out sizzling off the grille and also tasted phenomenal . The fish was okay, all dishes had a bit of an asian touch.
