This place... oh my goodness, this place. The GEM of the Illinois Valley. I could sing praises to Mongolian Grill from the rooftops, and I would if I had access to a roof. Let me state that I have been eating here since they opened, around 2013-2014 perhaps. Everything has stayed consistent, including the pricing, and that's been impressive. When you walk in, you have the option of ordering from the menu or doing the buffet and let me tell you- get the buffet. If you can cook at all, you will enjoy yourself here. You'll get your soft drink, then it's off you go to build your masterpiece. Five separate buffets with two side stations, there's a lot to process. There's two small stations, one for fried rice and one for ice cream. There's a cold bar in the back which features some salad items and desserts, and one buffet table full of ready to eat apps and foods with some soups offered. I did giggle that the one says "eggg dorp soup". It's what you'd expect at any Chinese buffet. Then we get to the good stuff- the hibachi stuff. You have three bars for hibachi: your noodles and veggies, your meats, and your sauce ingredients. You get a bowl and load it up with your choice of noodles and veggies, there are so many options. Tofu, egg, zucchini, baby corns, broccoli, water chestnuts, sprouts... I can't get enough color! Then you move over to the meat buffet, where you select your raw cuts and place the pieces in your bowl. I typically do the beef and shrimp, always good quality. You'll bring your bowl to the hibachi grill and set it on the counter so they can start cooking it. You'll go make your sauce at this point, which is where it could get overwhelming if you don't know flavors well. There are probably 20 sauces to mix and about 25 seasonings and the likes to add flavor, so there's a lot of room for creation with your sauce! You'll bring it up to the hibachi again when you're done, and they'll plate your order and bring it to you if needed. For $10.99 a person, what a stellar deal. So much fresh produce and variety from a family owned business, it's a staple in the Illinois Valley. Although I've moved to another state at this point, this is the one restaurant I haven't seen done this well and one I miss whole heartedly. I visited the IV from Florida recently and ensured I ate there several times because I just can't get enough of the great service and incredible food. I think they have a little work to do on the atmosphere, but that does not stop this place from being one of my favorite restaurants. The waitstaff is attentive to our drinks every time we go and the food is excellent if you know what you like. We were out and about late at night (well, early by our standards, but this area is hard to find an open restaurant after 9!). We needed a restaurant that would have vegetarian and vegan-friendly options. So we called Chan's Garden, and it turns out it is the same place as Genghis Khan Mongolian Grill. They said we could order off the menu, but the buffet would be closed. So we rushed on over. When we arrived, the buffet was still open. The woman told us they had kept it open since she thought we'd be coming. She and the two chefs were absolutely delightful. They were so polite and helpful. The grill chef came out and explained his favorite sauces. There were multiple kinds of tofu! Lots of vegetables! It was really friendly and delicious. Plus, the check surprised us by how cheap it was. Massive amounts of food and a drink, and it was about $20 for two. If we are ever back in the area, we will come here. As a vegan, I expect a lot of boring pasta and french fries when I travel, so this was a treat to have loads of vegetables and tofu in a great garlic and ginger sauce. read more

Service was awful. The cook was the only person who could take the phone orders. People walked out because the could not place a togo order. The cook was on the lhone 10 minutes taking an order. We had 1 buffet and 1 order off the menu. 25 minutes to get the off the menu food. The food was not tasty. I ordered beef kung pao but based on the beef in my sons stir fry i changed to chicken. The beef in his stir fry was so tough it was inedible. He ate around it. My kung pao chicken had deep fried chicken in it. I love kung pao. I have never had deep fried chicken in kung pao chicken. The waitress came out and asked me if i wanted mild or hot. Kung pao is spicy. I guess the cook was afraid because I had to add a tablespoon of sambal. I've had Mongolian Grill before. This place is about average as far as Mongolian Grill goes. But, the service is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. Don't know what happened to James L. that Saturday night, but I never experienced dirty food or an empty buffet in the two times I've been here. I plan to go back again and bring friends. A nice little business that seems to be the only thing open on the weekends in the giant urban sprawl of LaSalle, IL! Ok, I'm just kidding, this is a tiny little town..but even though the decor is a bit grungy and could use Genghis Khan's calvary to gallop through with scrub brushes attached to their backsides, it is a solid deal! Think flat tops in an odd rural setting run by "Mom 'n Pop" Chinese peeps. Very nice place to eat, considering it is a Mongolian bbq in the middle of no where! You can't compare it to BDs or anything but for the price you pay it is a great place to eat. You do make your own bowl, with soup, salad and some dessert. For the price they charge it is very cheap. Food quality is not in par with big cities, but it is pretty good for the area. The decor was out dated. Our waitress was trying to be nice. She could have explained the rules like they do in big cities. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised...... the decor certainly leaves a lot to be desired. From the outside I was nervous to eat here based on curb appeal. With that being said I could not deny how good it smelled from outside, and the fact that it seemed like a lot of locals were walking in. I suggest sticking to the Mongolian half because it was delicious however the crab rangoon was excellent. Honestly when it comes right down to it the food was great and 2 of ate for less than $20 minus tip. read more

After hiking at Starved Rock we (6 of us) did a Google search and came up with GKMG and headed over there on a lark. Talk about a gem! The hostess was very friendly and really made us feel welcome. We each had 2 helpings of stir fry that was exactly comparable to Flat Top Grill in Chicago. That's a huge compliment if you've ever been to FT. There was lamb, chicken, beef, ribeye, pork, shrimp, scallops, sausage, salmon, and I'm sure I'm forgetting one or two others. The end result was absolutely delicious. The restaurant was spacious and very clean. The price made our eyes bulge - in a GOOD way! Such a great dinner on a chilly day. I really loved this place. I tried it out one night because I ate a similar place in Grayslake so I wanted to try this place out too because I loved the other place so much. I liked the concept of picking out what you want and putting it in your bowl and then getting it cooked and put on a plate for you. It is a good way to monitor what is put in your food and low in fat if you don't go crazy with the sauces and red meat. I will be going back when I am in LaSalle again and hungry. I usually get the orange chicken combination plate that comes with fried rice and an egg roll. The orange chicken has all the right spices (just the right orange citrusy tang with just the right amount of sweetness) along with fresh orange peels in the sauce. You know they are doing it right when they do that! I go to a lot of chinese restaurants because let's face it... I like food. This one definitely stands out for having one of the top orange chicken dishes out there. I've been to this restaurant over on first street in La Salle 4 times since it has opened. Every single time I've had delicious food and fairly fast service. The waiters weren't the best, but they were nice and fast. As for cleanliness, the restaurant it's self is clean, its just old. The plates were clean, the silverware was clean, the drinks were good. The wide array of options to choose from there was fantastic, I loved choosing the different seasonings and sauces. As for the reviews above, I think many of them are very harsh and full of vitriol. At the very worst I'd give them 4, maybe I'm too lenient who knows. read more

This the Flat Top look alike of LaSalle. People were super friendly. They had a large variety of veggies to put in your stir fry- along with many sauces and meats. A nice thing that came with your meal is the buffet too (also have a dessert buffet). I may go back. It's difficult because I keep comparing them to Flat Top and they aren't quite the same. This is one of my all time favorite places in the Illinois Valley. The food is fresh and you get to pick out exactly the ingredients and flavor you want your dish to have. Making the sauce is my favorite, I always make something spicy and garlic heavy with a citrus zip and peanuts! It is one of the very few places in the area you can get decent vegetarian food, and not just decent, you have a large selection! They have like five different types of noodles, a ton of fresh veggies, fresh tofu, and eggs. You could even go vegan in there without sacrificing flavor or fun! The value is incredible and... drumroll please... it is BYOB! MY friend and I brought in a bottle of wine the other day to drink with dinner and it was so delightful. They've got a full salad bar, a hot noodle bar, a meats bar, a fruit & dessert bar, and a sauces-n-spices bar. The meats: chicken, beef, lamb, sausage, pork; The seafood: scallops, shrimp, salmon, squid, oysters; and tons of fresh veggies on the salad bar like carrots, mushrooms, water chestnuts, bok choy, baby corn, snap peas, bean sprouts, broccoli, etc. I've never seen such a fresh selection of veggies at at buffet!!! The tofu squares were awesome too! They also have a yougurt and ice cream bar for dessert. They use the freshest and healthiest ingredients, the food is low-fat and fresh, so, it's very very tasty. No, it's not the Waldorf but the staff is friendly, the veggies & meats are fresh and they are mostly steamed not fried! Yay, healthy! They use just enough oil on the grill to keep the food from sticking then add water to help it steam cook. HUGE selection of vegetables (one overflowing bar); another bar full of meats; another bar that is a salad bar with veggies & fruits; another with soups, rice, fried rice, egg rolls, rangoons, & doughnuts; and then the bar full of sauces & seasonings to mix & match.......That's 5 bars PLUS a freezer with 5-6 different kinds of ice cream! All you care to eat, one price. But you can't take home leftovers! (5/4/17 - what is it with redecorating and food quality?? 1st Uptown now here.
