They provide you with a smaller bowl and what ever you can fit in the bowl. I chose peppered beef, shrimp and pork along with broccoli, beans, onion, carrots and an egg. They have numerous sauces to choose from as well. I chose the noodle, but they also have a rice noodle and white rice as well. A buffet salad bar and two soups to choose from also come with your meal. We were greeted promptly with a friendly smile and seated immediately. We loved our own creations of our stir-fry. Did a quick dine in and opted for their create your own stir fry bowl option. You can load up on meat, seafood, and veggies. (As much as you can fit in your bowl.) There is also complimentary soups and salad when you dine in. We both got their rice noodles and it pairs great with a scrambled egg. They can get a little crowded depending on the time you go. Lines can form pretty quickly at the food stations and the wait can be a bit long. Jiang's and their create your own stir fry is a very casual dining option. Definitely not a date night restaurant. I have not had a Mongolian grill type meal in a long time. I was excited to try this place. I went on a Thursday around 1:00 pm and the restaurant was empty. The restaurant is big with basic decor. I was immediately turned off by the raw meat on the buffet. I am used to seeing frozen meats. The meat and vegetable selection is good. There are plenty of sauces to pick from. And you can try the sauces. You can get rice, thin noodles and/or big noodles for the base. Both noodles are good. The bowl I created tasted ok. I wish they had some suggestions on sauces or combinations to use. The salad buffet and soups are basic. The service was friendly. When I went to the bathroom before leaving, the stall floor was dirty in the corners. To the owners, this matters. Sorry but I won't go back. read more

The lady was friendly and the restaurant was quiet. But the food was a no. Bland. Seemed like it needed more time for the chicken to get some color at least. Rare at best. The restaurant was 40 mins away from our host family. We went there during an expected heavy rain. It's not too many people when we walked in. The waitress was so nice to take over our umbrellas and wrapped with a bag, in case the water dripped all over. Our friends explained the process to us. We have a bowl to pick up our first bowl, from step 1 to step 4 all marked. Salad and soups are free. Step 1 is meat, including seafood. Step 2 is vegetable, the broccoli is cut in a big chunk, other veggies are good size. Step 3 is sauce, so many choices. Step 4 is noodles or rice. Then once you picked all your ingredients, you can give them to the chef, and they will help you to cook on a flat surface and bring to your table. I built mine as a huge bowl. Since it was huge bowl, I wouldn't need a 2nd bowl. Otherwise, I would need to pay extra $10 for unlimited amount. Good to have different choices that we could try first, if not enough, then add on. Very friendly, very welcoming. I am mystified by all of the 5 star reviews. Somewhere between California and the Midwest, taste goes to hell. I have been to 3 Mongolian bbq's. Not in this area . They were really comparable and we loved them all. Nothing could have prepared me for this. On another site a patron was giving advice on building your bowl. He mentioned lining the bottom with the frozen meat. There was no frozen meat. BUT there were hot dogs! Sliced up of course to camouflage that fact. The rest of the meat was indistinguishable. I guess that is why they have signs above the serving containers. I have no idea why we didn't run out. Truly, the meat looked like intestines , at a bad accident. Oh, I forgot to mention the hostess following 2 steps behind. Like a Mongolian Nazi. I got this....ok? The bowls MAY be 6" diameter. There is no way to really get a layered bowl. Then sauces...fine. then the salad bar. Again a flat plate about 4-6" diameter. Eating it trying to be neat is impossible. Lettuce all around the plate. I ate some of the rice and noodles. I was not convinced my chicken was cooked thoroughly so I didn't eat that. My husband will eat anything. We have very different palates. He said he didn't like it but he ate it. I had mine put in a box and dumped it the trash outside. I am still having gag reflex 3 days later. Needless to say I don't recommend it. We came here when Jiang's first opened, then didn't start coming back until recently. Hard to believe this place has been here 10 years now. We like it. Its nice to see that they've been consistent, meaning they haven't gone downhill in terms of quality just because that new restaurant hype is gone. They have a decent amount of fresh meat and seafood to choose from. A ton of sauces to customize your bowl. Everything is flat top grilled to perfection. Food and tea is presented well. Greeters, servers, hibachi experts are all very nice. The place is clean. I'm not a big fan of their "included" salad bar, it is pretty sad. Also, for the prices they charge, the "fill your bowl" is pretty small, not to mention they kind of have a hibachi police that eye your tray and threaten to charge extra if they see anything overflowing outside the bowl. I mean, 4 broccoli florets and the bowl is almost full. You'll see things on the menu like "no sharing" for the sad salad and "to-go bowl 4.99 extra charge" and you start to play "to go or not to go, that is the question". But know this, you can always bank on consistent, hot, made to order, customizable, fresh stir fry here. read more

I have never been able to do the all you can in bowls because by the time I fill my bowl with noodles and my ingredients, I always had leftovers. It is tough though with the bowl to figure out what you want and try to squeeze everything. First time in Algonquin, IL first time at this restaurant. There was nothing different or exciting about this establishment as far as food goes. Hibachi style, they cooked it up for us. Tried the Hata Ramune Strawberry Japanese Soda for the first time, the way that you have to open the bottle was a fun experience, it didn't taste particularly any different from any soda that I've had in the past. I tried the Hot and Sour soup for the first time, and again wasn't amazed. Our waitress/host was very nice which was a good surprise. Really good price. I love that they maintain all of the stations very well. (Its not like at a chinese buffet grill. Where they have a few raw items to pick for the grill and maybe 4 cooking styles.) They have the works meats from ham all the way to scallops. Same with veggies a good variety of oriental vegetables and the usual. The sauces are insane, I think there's at least 20 different sauces from a lot of different types of Asian cuisine. And they have 3 types of noodles and rice. This is what I got today carrots, pea pods, shrimp,squid, chow mei fun noodles, egg, ginger and garlic sauce really good. And a half cup of hot and sour soup. Your first experience may be a bit confusing, but you'll get it.:) The secret is to pile your original bowl with as much meat, seafood and vegetables that you want. Then you get a plate to add ass much rice and/or noodles. Next you add your sauce(s) to small cups. Finally you give your tray of food to the cook. Then if you wish enjoy the complimentary soup and salad bar. Went with hubby to try this place. Very interesting concept! they have a few options, we chose the bowl (they also have unlimited bowls I believe). Price is very reasonable at less than $17 for the regular bowl. They give you a bowl and you can fill it up with meats (they have a whole section of various meats - chicken, shrimp, meat, ham, etc), and then an area where you can pick veggies of various types and a sauce type bar where they have a bunch of different sauces that you can try. They also have a salad bar that's included in the price. You give your bowl with meats and veggies (Plus rice or noodles) to the chef who puts your stuff onto a round/circular hot cooking type instrument and then they bring your food to your table. On a freezing Saturday afternoon on the Illinois prairie, my family first tasted Jiang's; the warm experience exceeded our wildest expectations in all aspects of description. From the moment one walks through the double doors, one enters an Oriental world that is as far from bland suburban sameness as east is from west. The calming, yet compelling, earth tone color palette of the interior is as bold as the flavors without being garish. High ceilings give ample breathing space so you do not feel cloistered. A well-Oriented architect, rather than a occidental capitalist, likely laid it out with the people's pleasant dining experience in mind. The layout creates a cozy, intimate atmosphere so you don't feel like you are eating in a crowded, loud cafeteria. In a non-linear, semi-circular fashion, the floor plan wraps, intriguingly, around a Mongolian grill, where a chef grills your choice ingredients into a masterful whole; yet there is a soft "buffer" of bamboo so that you don't feel like you are intruding on the dining experience of others. Even for my party, with two small children, the hostess seated us, thoughtfully, in a semi-private half-booth where my kids could lay out coloring books and create little worlds of their own imagination. The food is delicious; a smorgasbord of fresh options befitting a sophisticated, immersive atmosphere. The soup and salad is unlimited. The soups are made fresh daily from scratch. The hot & sour soup was so delicious I returned for seconds. Steaming clam chowder on a cold day? The salad bar doesn't miss a beet. No wilted, slimy lettuce here; the salad bar is well stocked with an assortment of fresh vegetables you don't often find along Randall Road. You can a create a stand-alone salad with antioxidant-rich beets, crisp lettuce, juicy pineapple, diced tomatoes, and sugar snap peas. As you would expect, there is your standard fare of proteins: chicken, beef, or pork; however; Jiang's expands on the usual protein picks with eggs and seafood options like fresh fish, crab, shrimp, scallops, squid, even mussels from New Zealand. The attentive staff goes the extra mile without overbearing. Servers work as a team, checking in to see how your meal tastes and keeping your cup full. Rather than distracted and absent, the staff is mindful and present, enhancing your dining experience with thoughtful gestures, like wrapping the customer's copy of the receipt around your payment card. Thoughtfully, our server brought sticks of chewing gum with the bill so you can leave with fresh, rather than garlicky, breath. Jiang's even graced us with a parting gift; a colorful Chinese new year calendar my four-year-old liked so much that she hung it on the wall and "painted" it with markers. The devil is in the details does not mean God is in the generalities. Ordinarily, I don't write granular reviews at this level of detail; but, having dined at some of the finest restaurants in Chicago and LA, Jiang's Mongolian is a five-star experience in a location you'd least expect, uncommon for the Algonquin Commons. In my hometown, where unique dining options along Randall Road are usually limited to usual suspects of soulless, ho-hum corporate chains, Jiang's is a surprise. The reasonable price is not a tradeoff to quality. The restrooms are so nice you can rest; with beautiful vessel sinks, spacious floor plans, and everything you need to leave as fresh as the vegetables. TLDR: Brief summery of the options to build your own stir fry. A quick sum up of the food quality. Summary of past two visits (semi unplesent). All in all its a good place with fresh food, but the service quality is up and down and its not dependent on the night (busy/slow). I do recommend this place and we will be back in the future despite a few hiccups that has occurred. Other times service has been phenomenal. Don't take my word for it, try it out yourself. Whenever we come in here we always do the create your stir fry option. The food laid out to choose from is fresh and there are plenty of options to choose from. Chicken, steak, imitation carb, pork, fish, scallops, muscles, calimari, and a variety of fresh vegetables. After you fill your bowl you choose from a plethora of sauces, and then rice noodles, regular noodles or rice. There are additional dry seasonings to choose from but they are limited. Now for the experience... I have been here quite a few times since I moved to the area... each experience varying greatly. The first few times were good not anything unusual when you go out to dine. For the most part the food quality is always the same very fresh looking and the qauilty/taste of the meal is great... I mean how can you dislike something you created yourself. It is literally a create your own stir fry type of place. One of the more recent visists I was slightly disappointed with my food was when they mixed up the sauce with another persons (I could tell because I like garlic and spice and no garlic flavor or spicyness was present it was more on the sweet side of life) so the flavor was off for me. Also that night my bf found a few pieces of plastic in his food (looked like a seal to a bottle). Either way it was busy that night mistakes happen our waitress kept checking up and making sure we were good, we let her know but did not want to make a complaint as another customer had just screamed at her and she seemed stressed from that, when there was nothing she could have done to please that terrible table (they were real rude customers the kind that complain to get discounts and comped food, also ignorant, I am Asian and was wearing black shirt and biking shorts (not even the staff uniform logo+long black pants) but that night they thought I was a server and kept tapping me on the shoulder when I was getting my own food or at the salad bar) This past visit we were there way longer than planned due to poor customer service... dinner rush seemed to be dying down, we were there for an hour and a half being checked up on minimally. Once initially to get our drink order, another time for dropping off food(not our server for this one), and once more right after we got our food server came by and asked if we were doing good... hadn't even taken a bite of my bowl... after that she basically poofed on us. We finished eating and then waited.. and waited... and waited... after 30 mins of her not even coming to check up on us or looking at out table but helping other tables, I approached their register and politely asked for boxes and a check where the other server let us know she would inform our server. Waters were empty and food was almost cold by the time we left. Finished eating after about 45mins since we entered the place, but we were in there for 1.5 hours but only saw our waitress 3 times (drinks, how is everything, here's your tab) All in all these experiences won't stop us from coming back but we have taken a few larger breaks between visits to hopefully allow ample time for our disappointment to wear off. If I could I would give Jiang's three and a half stars, but since I can't I decided to bump it up to four. While the selection might be limited, they had everything I wanted, so I really do not have room to complain. The cost was reasonable, we did not do all you can eat because my one dish was plenty... I even had leftovers for later. Each dinner comes with a soup and salad buffet. I know some people complained that it is Iceberg lettuce, but the selection of toppings for the salad made it good. There were hard boiled eggs and fresh cooked bacon... yum! The Hot and Sour soup was definitely on the spicy side, just the way I like it. We ordered a pot of tea and then got sodas once we finished the tea. As someone else mentioned the soda was only $1.70 with free refills... you don't see that very often. I think you need to visit a place 2-3 times to properly rate it. But after my second visit, I know I won't be returning. The reason I decided to dine in was because I had a taste for stir fry and wanted to be in control of the amount of sauce, etc that's going into my food. The environment is nice and clean and my waitress was really friendly. The salad bar leaves a lot to be desired. I'm pretty sure the lettuce is from the bag, and none of the toppings looked very appetizing - this is coming from someone who loves salad bars. I ended up putting a small pile of lettuce on my plate with nothing else. The selection of meat and vegetables is good and there are so many sauces to choose from, which is great. There are little spoons available to try each sauce, all of which were extremely salty (which is to be expected, I guess). You also have an option of having noodles or rice with your meal, which you can literally PILE a mile high on your plate. (And in all honesty after seeing some peoples plates, I think people come here for the value rather than the actual food quality). The flavor of the food was fine (since I picked it and all) But my meat of choice was chicken, and the chicken was bad. I'm not sure why, but the chicken is cut in long, fat horizontal strips WITH the grain. The chicken should be cut much, much thinner or be in smaller pieces against the grain. Perhaps they use large pieces to fill up your bowl faster? Once cooked, the chicken is extremely tough and rubbery. My Mom ordered off the menu, expecting it to be better, but it wasn't. She picked all of the chicken out and ate the vegetables. Perhaps this place might be okay if you just eat vegetables and noodles, but the meat is just not good. Have been here a few times for dinner with my wife. We have also been to other Mongolian BBQ places out west (Hawaii and California), and we understand the whole "Mongolian BBQ program", so that is not an issue. They serve alcohol, which is a good thing, servers are QUITE ATTENTIVE AND COURTEOUS, the food fresh, rather unique, reasonably priced, and the decor is pleasing (except for the men's restroom which was clean but looked like it was painted by an elementary school shop class during a masking tape shortage). In my opinion, (and I hope the owner reads this, because I DO LIKE this place and DEFINATELY will return), there are a few easy things that could be done to take this restaurant to the next level: 1. Offer lamb. Lamb is a staple of the people of Mongolia. Not only would it add a bit of authenticity, but while some people view it as an acquired taste, once you taste it mixed with the other meats and sauces in your BBQ, you will be hooked for life.....ie RETURN CUSTOMERS! I know lamb is rather expensive, but perhaps a slight upcharge if someone wants lamb in their stir fry? I'd pay extra for it! 2. PRESENTATION is important! On our visit, the veggies were indeed fresh, but they looked like they had been chopped/cut by the home economics class from the same elementary school as the boys that painted the men's bathroom. Basically, just large, jagged chunks of veggies (mushrooms and celery were cut especially poorly). SUGGESTION: Invest in sharp knives and SLICE the veggies into uniformly shaped (no need to get creative) pieces instead of various sized large chunks. Carrots should be coarsely shredded or chopped into small, rectangular pieces. A bit more work, but definitely worth it. Wish I had photos, but the restaurant was busy when I was there and wasn't prepared to hold up the line with my google device. I have included a picture of what the celery and mushrooms SHOULD look like. 3. MEATS. Same issue as the veggies except being cut in large chunks affects the texture of some meats after they are cooked. Chicken and seafood can be chunked, but unless you are using tenderloin cuts (I doubt it) of pork and beef, you should invest in a commercial meat slicer and slice these meats to about 1mm thick, maybe thinner depending on the grade of meat you start with (think Italian beef thickness). Easy way to do this is to slice the meat on the commercial slicer while it is still frozen or partially frozen. Some of the beef and pork pieces in my stir fry were stringy and tough. The meats look better in a pan if sliced too. Frankly, the pork and beef on the line looked like a bloody mess in the pans. Please do not misconstrue this to mean that the meat was in some way unsafe or bad....it was VERY, VERY FRESH, but did not look very pleasant, and when cooked up, it was stringy and tough. 4. RICE. First Mongolian place I have been to where they mix the rice up with the meats and veggies. I guess this is fine for some people, but if I had known, I would have just brought my rice directly to my table and not given it to the cooks to stir fry. Maybe let people know that their stir fry will be prepared this way and give them the option to have their rice on the side if they so choose. OWNERSHIP: Please, go check out your food line, and take a critical look at how both the meats and veggies are cut and presented. I know you can do better without increasing cost. Fresh Food that you get to pick, cooked right in front of you. You cannot beat the price. My sister and I got the bill, it was $30 for both.
