6/18/20 Re: COVID: Open during Yelp posted business hours, barely any customers (saw one other customer when we were there),spacious inside with plenty of ventilation and staff is masked up. Wow! Heaven for Koi and fancy goldfish lovers. I had no idea there was a place like this right here in San Jose. Tucked away in a warehouse on 10th St near SJ Giants stadium/Senter Costco, this location offers full grown competition grade koi and fancy goldfish. Many of the mature Koi are hand selected during an annual trip by the owner Kevin in Japan. Others are shipped from Japan and Thailand. There was a large batch of fancy goldfish just shipped upon our arrival and currently in quarantine...something something ironic. Anyhow, the prices appear reasonable for the size and quality of fish they offer. About $75 for smaller fancy goldfish like Ranchu and Oranda up to $150 or so for larger. Koi range widely based on markings, coloring and lineage...and probably other factors a noob like me in unaware of, but that the folks at Genki would happily explain. Every fish we saw looked to be in peak condition. Bill, who turned out to be the owner, Kevin's Brother-in-Law patiently helped us through all our questions and gave us plenty of space to browse the fish. It was nice to know this rather impressive endeavor was still handled by folks who really care about the hobby, family even. He also provided guidance on maintaining color and health of the fish. Another gentleman, Dai also helped us with all of goldfish-specific questions since Bill specializes specifically in Koi. During non-covid times this organization also hosts auctions and events for Koi enthusiasts. Hopefully we will be able to join in the future. We'll be back soon to check out the fish once we are ALL out of quarantine. If you are looking for your next Koi or considering upgrading your freshwater tank with some incredible goldfish specimens...or even just in the neighborhood Genki Koi is definitely worth a visit.

Great quality fish and friendly staff, definitely worth the drive for me (coming from Marin)!

Premium prices for average-fare. I really wanted to patronize this aquatic establishment but the pricing on their fish is STEEP and quite the hard pill to swallow for their average to good offerings of koi and fancy goldfish. If you're looking for value, this is the wrong place to go! I am an avid keeper of fancy goldfish for over a decade now and the point of my visit was for fancy goldfish; one of Genki's specialties. For their normal-fare of average-sized to large koi and fancy goldfish, the prices here are an outright cash grab or highway robbery. ***They sell fish for $100-$400 that would cost $35-$150 tops at their competitors.*** Their selection and quality just does not justify their exorbitant pricing. I was unable to find any show-quality fish which you would expect at the price point they command. Putting value in prospective, compared to coast gem that also specializes in handpicked first-choice fancy goldfish and mailing them to you from san diego, there's much better fish there for cheaper. Even after UPS takes their next-day-air shipping share! The savings over this place would be enough to eat-out for my family for dinner at a sit-down establishment. Not to mention, you're able to save a trip here. Pricing of their supplies on hand is fair and palatable but that's pretty much where all the good ends at. If you're looking for XXL-XXXL koi to stock your massive pond with, where a yard stick is more appropriate for scale and a bathroom scale for determining weight, look no further. This is the only place that sells such impressively sized koi in the bay area. If you're on the market and have the facilities to successfully keep such fish, you already know the 4 digit denomination for prices. Word of the wise, if you're tone-deaf on value and still plan on acquiring fish from here, please take the time to observe prospective selections for a couple minutes before committing. Especially for their fancy goldfish. I noticed quite a few sickly fish on my visit, in all places including their display tank near the counter where they keep their top-shelf "best" fish. Swim bladder is especially problematic with their stock. On my particular visit I had my eyes on an red/ black "apache" oranda that the employee would shy away from answering my questions about its health after I noticed it tended to loiter at the top of the surface of the water and unable to swim down.

This place have big koi fish and they are nice and expensive. We were looking for a new place for koi fish food since the one we normally patron is closed. Was very impressed with the layout and the size of the fish. Will need to pick up a couple of extra shifts to afford them. Will keep them in my Rolodex for future reference.

I've traveled up and down the Peninsula and Genki Koi is THE SPOT for quality Fancy Goldfish and Koi in the Bay Area. Lookout for the sandwich board sign as it is quite hidden and tucked behind a large building. They have recently started offering many beautiful and rare Thai imported Ranchu, Oranda, Demekin, and more. I am always pleased with the quality and health of their fish and will definitely be back again.

Best place to get a premium selection of goldfish (they had a large selection of Ranchu, Oranda, Tamasaba, Demekin, and Buffalo ranchu). Of course they have a beautiful selection of Koi as well, but I primarily was searching for goldfish. Prices were slightly higher than a typical fish store or chain pet store, (Genki: $75+ for Ranchu and $35-75 for Tamasaba). However the quality and coloration of these fish are far above anything that I have seen available in the Bay Area, well worth the price if you love goldfish! I purchased a Tamasaba goldfish ($50 for a medium sized fish 2-3 inches) and 2 weeks later I am very happy with the purchase. This is the first location in the Bay Area that I could purchase this fish outside of imports or online shipment. I will absolutely be back for more Tamasaba and perhaps other goldfish types from Genki Koi!

Genki koi have the most beautiful and high end goldfish, the staff there are really nice helpful with great personalities, and if I would have a chance to go any where in California for good quality goldfish I would really recommend Genki Koi

I absolutely would recommend Genki Koi to anyone looking for high quality goldfish or Koi. I have been searching for Tamasaba for a long time and when I contacted Kevin of a genki Koi, he was able to get me three of them. I was able to ask for videos of the potential fish I wanted and they were able to get me the perfect Tamasaba. Being based out if state and shopping online can be challenging, but Genki Koi made it easy to shop with confidence. I was shipped three healthy Tamasaba and I got a high quality Ranchu. The whole process of getting fish sent from out of state was easy. Definitely one of the best places to get goldfish and Koi. Thank you Genki Koi for getting me the Goldfish I've always wanted- Tamasaba

I recently bought a couple Thai calico oranda from this store, they are absolutely amazing! Probably the best quality u can get in the area. The calico oranda I bought have super spread out tails, very nice body shape and attractive colors, which make they stand out among the regular oranda. They are for sure a bit pricey, their goldfish price range from $50-$500.

One of my baby goldfish, very rare color and i mean it!

Here are some of the new amazing goldfish we got from genki! Very happy with them! Still our go to place for goldfish!

WOW!! Genki has exceptional fancy goldfish and outstanding customer service! I'm a bit of a goldfish geek and recently rebooted my 180 gallon aquarium. Bill, Kevin and Dai have gone above and beyond to answer my questions, update my knowledge and help me get the most out of my system. I have purchased 3 beautiful fish from Genki so far and can't wait to come back for more show quality fish. I have kept fancy goldfish off and on for 25 years and had recently gotten very discouraged about the whole hobby and was considering selling my tank because I had had so many bad experiences with poor quality fish from other places. I was referred to Genki and it has completely reinvigorated my enthusiasm for the hobby! These are the most healthy, high quality fish I have ever had the pleasure to keep. Every time I have come here (4 times in the last month lol) the fish all look healthy and well cared for. They have such a variety of Thai and hybrid Ranchu, Orandas, Demekins, Ryukins, Jikins...I take twice as long to decide because of so many lovely specimens to choose from. Their quarantine procedure gives me peace of mind that the fish have been screened and that they care about their customers' tanks. I also love that they're invested in the local community and growing the hobby with their Goldfish Palooza events. We are so incredibly fortunate to have a place like Genki.

I was a bit worried about my visit due to some of the negative reviews…read more I only interacted with two staff members but both seemed enthusiastic to help me while also giving me space to shop. The conditions of these tanks are PRISTINE. I'm not sure if it's due to their lightning or something else but the water just looks very clear and clean. I didn't see a single dead fish while browsing. Based on this fact, I'd like to believe that their livestock is quite healthy. They also make their policies VERY clear. It's on their website and there are also signs around the shop. Maybe these policies aren't that shocking to me since I buy lots of livestock online that don't have a guarantee after you add it to your aquarium. They do not have a phone number to check stock but they do post updates on their website and email newsletter. They claim it's due to high foot traffic but it wasn't very busy when I was there (Friday afternoon) with that being said, all of the staff members were doing something while I was at the store. I think they just don't have enough people sometimes. Price wise, yes some of the fish are outrageously priced ($14 for a CPD is crazy) but many of them seem reasonable. I assume it's however they're getting their stock or the fact that they offer 20% discounts if you get a 40G+ kit. They also sell cycled media for $20/lb if you're impatient to cycle a tank! I would highly recommend as a place to visit if you're just setting up a new tank or need a more uncommon/rare fish. They'll have basically anything you need but you can definitely get more common fish like pygmy corys, pea puffers, CPDs, etc elsewhere if you're looking to save money. Below are some prices based on my June 2026 visit to give you a sense of their pricing: Keep in mind that not all of these were in stock so prices might change. The guy (I dont know if he is the owner) has always been nice even though im only coming in to look for new discus fish, he has never treated me badly for not buying. When he does have discus, its always priced very fair and in good condition, if the fish are sick he will let me know ahead of time and to address the past review about fish being sick is that fish get sick all the time due to the stress environment even if they're not sick at the time of purchase, once you add it to your aquarium can get sick from the environment you put them into so its not always the place you bought it and it's just part of the process. Very clean place with knowledgeable and friendly staff…read more They are expanding right now, tons of fish and coral here. This could easily end up being the best coral supply stores in Northern California! I highly recommend a visit!

I am posting this as a cautionary experience…read more I ordered livestock from Violet Aquariums. The order arrived with a fish that was dead on arrival and a coral that arrived in extremely poor condition, with severe tissue recession, exposed skeleton, and a foul odor. Photos were provided immediately upon delivery in accordance with their stated DOA policy. The business refused to refund or replace the coral under any circumstances. For the DOA fish, they offered only store credit, which would have required me to pay approximately $50 in additional shipping to replace a $40 fish unless I placed a much larger new order, with no guarantee that any replacement would arrive viable. What was most concerning was the tone and content of their email responses when I requested a refund or replacement. In writing, they repeatedly characterized a lawful chargeback as "fraud" and made threats of retaliation and blacklisting, including statements such as "you want to commit fraud... chargeback in your case," "yes, we will ban you as fraud," "we will fight the chargeback," "you will run out of suppliers," and "we do not want them as our customers ever." Livestock losses happen. How a business responds matters. Based on this experience, I would strongly caution others before ordering.
