Poor experience, steer clear! I wound up visiting Gentle Dental Desert Winds because they are an in-network provider through my insurance. However, in hindsight I definitely should have referenced their reviews and track record before dealing with them. 2.2/5 stars speaks volumes of how they consistently come up short and their dealings with their patients, I guess I'm not the only one with whom they've dealt dishonestly. I went in for a routine cleaning and check up to see if I needed any fillings. I was very clear that I only wanted the work performed that would be covered by my company-based insurance plan, no extra extras, add-ons, upsells or frills. I asked for pricing transparency and simple honest treatment. Unfortunately, that proved too much to ask. From the onset, they started in with recommending treatments that my dental hygienist and dental assistant family members assured me were unnecessary, I kindly declined and reminded them that if those additional treatments weren't covered by my insurance, then I didn't want them. After the initial assessment, I was told that we could proceed with the cleaning, and that I had a few cavities that would need to be filled. We proceeded with the cleaning immediately and I asked them to verify with my insurance that the fillings would be covered before we addressed them. At the end of my first appointment they supposedly verified that the fillings would be covered by my insurance so we scheduled another appointment a few days later. When I returned, Dr. Nguyen filled my cavities and did a fair job. She was kind and approachable but when I mentioned that the fillings still snagged the floss, we arrived at a point in which she shrugged and said, "that's the best we can do". I suppose a hack job of a filling is better than a cavity, but I wouldn't call it fine dental work. On my way out, I confirmed with the front desk that my account was up to date, insurance had covered the services and there were no outstanding payments due, they agreed and I went on my way. But THEN I got a follow up bill after the fact stating that my insurance hadn't covered the treatment I received DESPITE my insistence that I only wanted to receive treatments that were covered by the insurance. Nevermind the reassurance the front office of Gentle Dental Desert Winds had initially given me that they had confirmed my insurance plan, it turns out that was more of a guess-timate than an assurance of coverage. When I spoke with the billing manager, I was led to believe that I should have spoken with my insurance company to verify coverage myself and that they had only made sure that I had insurance coverage generally. I felt like I had been misled and given poor information. I will NOT be going back for another round of mediocre care and billing smoke and mirrors. Lesson learned, they can't be taken at their word and if you dare trust them with your care, be prepared to cough up extra funds after the fact (even if they say otherwise initially). read more

If you go to this Dental office always call your Insurance for a pre-estimate. I failed to do that and was overcharged and never received my refund after being told I had to wait 4-6 weeks before my credit card was credited. Legal action is forthcoming. read more

There usually seems to be an issue with the office calling to see if I can come in sooner to suit the dentist needs or same day cancellation. I waited months for my appointment for it to be cancelled last minute. If I were to cancel last minute I would be charged a fee. read more

I had read mostly good reviews of this Dental group, of which they are a chain. All of the negative reviews concerned billing, which I didn't consider my concern since I don't have insurance and had called ahead and gotten a quote range to have a tooth pulled. It appears, however, that the reviews are accurate. I came for my appointment only to have them charge me for the visit and tell me a specialist had to do the procedure the following week. Hm, ok. Today, upon walking in the door for a second appointment where I was to have the tooth pulled, they hit me with an additional $209.00 consult charge that didn't include pulling the tooth. This was the first I was told of this, on the day OF procedure. Then they told me they didn't really know how much the tooth pull would cost until after the consult, even though they had quoted me $150-$250 on the phone before my first (useless) visit. It seems that for cash patients they have a "pay as you go policy" meaning they string you along and only tell you what costs are when they think they've hooked you into a procedure. In the end, I was positioned by them to probably pay $700-$800. Total OOP through this method spoken of in the reviews as "surprise billing". When I balked, they seemed immune, like they had heard it all before. Must be SOP for them. Sad that doctors who have gone through so much to be a qualified dentist align themselves with such smarmy practices. Jokes on them because I have plenty of money to pay for ANY procedure, and was ready to pay for the procedure and make them my regular dentist until this dishonest nonsense. Instead, I walked. This corporate is just a mess. I have been having just lots of issues with three of Gentle Dental locations. Dentist did wrong treatment on me less than 3 months ago and now I have severe pain when I go outside at night and there is cold air. They don't do much to fix the issue. They gave me an appointment at this location and when I went there today the endodontist didn't go to work today. Worst part, no one called me to let me know. that they had to reschedule me. I wasted my time. I got an apology from Lee Clark, but she didn't do anything to make me happy. Gentle dental you need to hire better staff starting with your dentists. I haven't had a good experience with Antoinette from the Tempe location either. Can anyone superior contact me to solve all the issues you have caused ? Also if your dentist called off today next year give him the day after Christmas off. You guys need to do a lot of work to keep your clients happy when you make a bunch of mistakes. I was a patient at this GD all last year and nothing but good experience's with them and their specialist satellite offices. I've had cleanings, extractions and caps done with no real issues, and I plan on using them again this year. As for the business model of finding every fault in your mouth. I didnt want to write this review but i felt like I needed to after todays Dentist visit. Todays visit however was with another dentist. I came here to GD about 3 weeks ago as a new patient. Foolish of me to not review any comments or reviews on this place. I took 3 hours off of work to go to my appointment at GD. The tech who was taking the xrays was really nice but other than that, i felt everyone else was out to get my money. After their initial diagnosis the dentist claimed that i need several crowns and that i needed a deep cleaning. They immediately suggested i needed about 4 or 5 phases worth of work. They made it seem like my teeth were rotting away and all my teeth were in need of repair. I agreed to a first session but the whole time there i felt very uneasy. The hygienist took like 2 min to clean some of my teeth before injecting me to numb me. I sat in the chair for like 10 min then the dentist came over, took a look and injected me some more and he left. I was sitting in my chair for over 45 minutes!! How ridiculous was that. The dentist decided to start working on someone else and completely forgot about me. I stood up and told them i had to leave. They rescheduled me however i knew i wasnt going to be coming back. Worst experience ever. They numbed me for no reason and gave me an electric toothbrush at the end that pretty much said "woops, sorry". Im glad i didnt go back. They origionally had several thousands worth of work that i allegedly needed which was a complete lie. I went to a new dentist today anf the experience was completely different. No deep cleaning was needed, no crowns needed, a few fillings to replace but nothing compared to what GD claim i needed. Please be aware of this place. Let me start by saying earlier this year I would have told everyone to come here. But the ENTIRE Staff has changed. If I could put no stars I would. I was getting a cap done recently. No one explained why or anything. They just had me sign a HUGE bill telling me I wasn't agreeing to it and then started drilling. It felt like no one really knew what they were doing. And now I have a bill in the mail AFTER I already paid. Anytime I try to call the manager, Shes always "at a meeting" or "out of the office today" I'm not sure how you can manage something when you are never there. But I have found that is how gentle dental is. Everyone who works at one is incompetent. It's almost as if they drive over to home Depot and pick a few "employees" becauae it's cheap labor. WARNING...RUN DO NOT WALK away from this place. My experience at this place has been a nightmare. I have an amazing dentist Kathy Jacobson at Contemporary Dentistry located about a 1/2 mile down the street on Gilbert Road @ Houston that I have been going to since I moved to Arizona 6 years ago and I continue to go there, using my other insurance from work. But I recently went on Medicare, so I decided to use my 2 free cleanings a year from Medicare at this place. First, they told me they couldn't do a cleaning because I needed scaling done (which I had to pay for). So, I thought O.K. I'll have the scaling done then I'll be able to use them as I planned to get my 2 free cleanings a year. Well, it didn't turn out that way. After having x-rays done they pulled one of my back teeth. When I went back to my other dentist for my cleaning with them the hygienist told me I absolutely did NOT need scaling done and the dentist Kathy Jacobson confirmed that and told me she would have tried to save my tooth with a root canal and would not have pulled my tooth. Then after approximately 6-8 trips back to Gentle Dental they have never been able to fit me properly for a partial so I cannot eat on that side of my mouth. So finally, I went to Gentle Dental for my cleaning that I originally went for over a year ago. The hygienist that did my scaling (Kelly) was new there and by the time I went back for my cleaning she was gone. So a new hygienist (Cinnamon was her name) did my cleaning and she did a great job. Then I got home and got a message from Gentle Dental that I need to come back and pay for my cleaning. I told her that it's covered on my MediCare Insurance and she said that they could not do a regular cleaning it had to be a periodontal cleaning and that my insurance only pays for 1/2 and I have to pay the other 1/2. Contemporary Dentistry always bills my insurance and does a regular cleaning and they told me I do not have periodontal gum disease any longer. (I go to them every 4 months for cleanings.) Gentle Dental just wants to do everything it takes to get your money by doing procedures that are NOT necessary. They also do not communicate with one another or you, the patient. I have never written a review in my entire life, but I hope I can save someone from going through the horrendous experience that I have experienced there. I had a root canal done by Dr. Garber. I found the entire staff to be kind, considerate, and competent. The procedure was quick and painless. I know of two others who have had a successful experience with Dr. Garber as well. He is professional and concerned about his patient's comfort as he works. Beware of the Gentle Dental business model! They will find any tiny thing to criticize about your teeth and then insist you spend thousands of dollars for their upcharged (then discounted due to insurance) work. It is the only local place that takes my dental insurance and they have NEVER given the supposedly "free" cleaning to me or my 4 kids. They try to up-charge us $150/person for the "medium deep clean" every time and actually REFUSE to give us the basic clean saying there is "no point". Today was the last straw because the "free" bi-annual visit for one of my kids was going to cost $200 due to now requiring $42 co-pay for x-rays and the "deep clean" that they already had the paperwork for BEFORE looking in my son's mouth! The irony of that is that I just had him evaluated by a different orthodontist last night who said his teeth and gums looked fine. When I told them that and said that his gums looked pretty normal to me, they knocked $40 off for the "debridement". This is on top of the fact that their estimate for his braces was $1200 MORE than a 5-Star recommended orthodontist with ALL the bells and whistles (Robison) but then gave me a $1200 "discount" for my insurance essentially making them the same cost except they only have an orthodontist onsite 1 day/week and claimed it would take 2 years instead of the 1 year promised by Robison. I'm so glad I trusted my gut and got a 2nd opinion! BE CAREFUL!!! You may find (as I have) that they overcharge by a huge margin so basically end up being more expensive-EVEN WITH INSURANCE than paying cash prices at reputable dentists who own their own practices. I didn't even mention how they scheduled us at the WRONG location for the orthodontist consult we had, requiring that I left work early 2 days in one week instead of just one and then blamed their scheduling system for my inconvenience... So, long story sort of short. My insurance changed so I had to find a new dentist and went to Gentle Dental based on reviews. During my first (and only) visit saw the dentist for maybe 30 seconds and was told I needed over $3000 worth of dental work (over $1000 out of pocket). They said I needed some special deep cleaning that based on internet research/insurance is for people with periodontal gum disease as well as 5 cavities filled. They refused to give me my "free" regular cleaning that comes with insurance because they said once they diagnose a person as needing something different that is the only thing that can be done. They then charged me $66 for my "check up" and I left without my scheduled cleaning because I couldn't afford the special one. Had to get my money refunded after calling insurance who said they weren't even suppose to charge me for my visit because it was all covered under my 6th month check up and x-rays. I'm a 23 year old female who has always been told by the dentist to keep doing whatever I'm doing because it works and my teeth are great. I called up my old dentist and they pulled my file and said that this just didn't sound right based on my past, so I went into another dentist (Canyon Lakes Dental) for a second opinion. This dentist informed me that my teeth were great. Had my cleaning and checkup done and they said I have ZERO cavities and no gum loss at all. They asked me what my gum measurement numbers were from Gentle Dental to even be diagnosed with the gum disease and Gentle Dental didn't take any. Based on x-rays I had no gum recession either. Basically Gentle Dental diagnosed me with something without even going through the steps that are necessary for diagnosis. And then 5 cavities? No idea where they got that from but were apparently going to drill into perfectly good teeth for the money. So rather than paying over $1000 to Gentle Dental for work I didn't need, I have all the work I need done until my next 6 month visit and it didn't cost me a penny because there was nothing wrong with my teeth and insurance covered the basic cleaning and checkup. Based on my experience Gentle Dental is out to get you for whatever money they can. If you are told you need something extravagant, I would highly recommend pursuing a second opinion. read more

Horrible, do not use they will rip you off. not only are they second rate but they are rip off artists I recently woke up with sever tooth pain that continued to radiate up my Jaw and into my ear causing massive swelling along the left side of my face. I went into the dentist and was told that I needed a root canal, crown and build up. at a cost of almost $3000, (I have a dental plan that offers discounted rates and that cost was with the discount). They couldn't do the work that day and told me I would have to go to another location the next day to get the work done and was sent home with nothing for the pain. Next day at the other location the price magically jumped up to almost $6000 dollars as they insisted that I actually needed 2 root canals not just 1, the dentist was also extremely rude. I recently switched to a new dentist, Sally Hanciles, at Gentle Dental in Gilbert to get my routine checkup and cleaning. I was told I needed almost $17,000 worth of dental work (almost $7,000 out of pocket for me) including eight crowns with "buildups", four gingivectomies, and a "deep" cleaning". The hygienist wouldn't clean my teeth, even though I was scheduled for a cleaning, because he told me I needed a "deep cleaning" which costs $248, and I would have to schedule a 90 minute appointment for the cleaning. He said it would be a waste of time for him to do a regular cleaning. I was also told I needed to buy a Hydro Floss for $98 because regular flossing doesn't do enough. I was very skeptical since it had only been a year since my last checkup and cleaning, and I'm not having any pain or problems with my teeth. So I got a second opinion from a reputable dentist my coworker recommended. Turns out I only have one small cavity plus a small chip on one of my teeth (which they can repair without a crown), and I only need a routine cleaning. My cost for this will be approximately $150, not $7,000!!! Gentle Dental is NOT a reputable or ethical dentist office, and they obviously are recommending dental work that is not needed in order to make money!!! read more
