I have gone to George's Meat Market (a/k/a AA Meat Market) for more than 5 years. It is run by an incredibly hard working husband and wife team. They specialize in preparing Peking roast duck, that they sell mostly to restaurants, soy sauce chicken, roast pork (char siu), roast pig and other porcine parts for Chinese chefs. They also sell bulk quantities of rice as well as eggs. (They have limited baked goods for the coffee and tea to-go trade.) The duck, chicken, roast pork and roast pig are among the best I have tasted anywhere outside of China. You can buy the ducks and chickens whole or half, and the roast pork and roast pig by the pound at prices that are wholesale (i.e. significantly less than elsewhere in Chinatown). If I want a meatier bite, I ask for lean pork; when I want more flavor, I get it Chinese style that has a bit more fat. When not preparing the food at home, I purchase a to-go clamshell (soon to be a plastic-covered, aluminum dish) of duck or pork for $4 or a combination for $5 in a portion size that makes two meals. Having patronized Chinatown for over half a century, I can say without reservation that this meat market is well worth the trip to the NW corner of Grand and Eldridge Streets.
BTW as long as I known them, they have not sold any fruits or vegetables. However, someone unrelated to them has a vegetable stand in front of their store windows. I suspect the reviewer who complained about rotten strawberries may have bought them from a vendor of the unaffiliated outdoor stand. read more
