Don Don is a Korean restaurant serving high quality Korean BBQ. The restaurant is located walking distance from Times Square. It was empty when we visited during dinner time and the restaurant was not quite new so I had to admit I was a bit worried. However, our server was amazing and guided us through what to order. My family was visiting NY so I had my two kids with me. The set menu was per person but seeing my children, the server accommodated us by allowing us to order a set meal for two and not requiring us to order full sets for our two children as well. We ordered the Chef's Tasting menu as recommended. This came with plentiful of sides dishes, a scallion salad, a scallion pancake, and a choice of stew. The pancake was very thin and crispy. I think I am used to denser pancakes. The egg soufflé was delicious, much more flavorful than others I have tried. This set came with three cuts of pork. My favorite two were the pork jowl and pork belly. We also ordered a side of corn cheese, which is always a favorite for the kids. My husband accidentally ordered a pork noodle thinking it was something else. There was so much food that we couldn't finish, so the pork noodle was not memorable as a result. The fresh rice wine was a must for us when having Korean BBQ. That and the complimentary soft served ice cream at the end was the highlight of the meal for me. I think the soft served ice cream was topped with a pineapple syrup, but I am not certain. I still think about the ice cream now that I am back home from my NYC trip. Omg, love. Had dinner here on our last night visiting NYC. Son was in the mood for Korean, and it was interesting to see how this compared to Korean food from CA. We ordered the tasting menu and the egg soufflé and stew were yummy, interesting flavor in the stew. I enjoyed the three different types of pork, and the garlic leaf. That was new for me, and soooo good wrapped around a juicy piece of pork. The only downside is I find their banchan kind of bland. Our server was very attentive in everything from start to finish especially when the restaurant started to get packed with more customers and larger parties. As for larger parties, I recommend ordering Chef's Feast which serves more cuts of meat, stew, noodles, and one more side dish. We ordered the 30 day dry aged pork kicked off with a sizzling platter of Korean savory pancake which was crisp and not too thick or doughy. I decided on DonDon on w.43rd around the corner from Bryant Park because they specialize in pork dishes. The place is cute with a modern clubby vibe but for all ages. It seems fairly popular bc many made reservations but I was a walk in on a Monday night and was able to be seated right away. They don't use propane or charcoal for a heat source but rather an induction cooktop with cast iron pans. Bonchan consists of kimchi, scallion salad, sliced daikon, shredded radish an another red sauced fermented dish. You'd have to pay 7 for a ssam set so I opted out. I ordered the pork belly. Here's when I got let down: the waiter said it will be cooked in the back as I'm only one person. I was ready to to leave bc why should I pay the same as others for a traditional cook at the table side meal but have it cooked in the back? The waiter saw my disappointment and then said he'll have it cooked at my table. Well, my tabletop cooker wasn't working so I had to be moved. I passed by Don Don one day and decided to look it up just because I was curious. It turns out, the restaurant is owned by the same chef as Kochi and Mari, meaning this KBBQ had to be top notch. When we first stepped in, I felt transported right back to South Korea. You can tell Don Don is legit because it was filled with actual ahjummas and ahjussis on a weekday night. The meats were good, I particularly enjoyed the pork belly as it was a thick slice which they cooked and cut up. The combo came with an egg soufflé, a stew (we picked soondobu), kimchi pancakes and a noodle (we picked the I cold noodles). The cold noodles was delicious and refreshing. The banchan was very basic and there were just 4 dishes. We also got their grape soju which they said they made in house. It did come in a mason jar with pieces of peeled grapes in it. My party ended up ordering the dry aged pork tasting menu, so we didn't have to think too much about what to get other than the soups. You get to choose two for a party of 4. The pork was delicious. Every single cut just got better and better. The pork flavor was so deep with the dry aged cuts. So good. I wanted to ask for more ssam but didn't know if there would be an extra charge. They only give enough for about 2-3 wraps a person. Garlic that's cooked on the grill is good, but I prefer raw garlic more because it has the ability to cut the fattiness of the pork. Scallion pancake was okay. I've had better, and the portion they give is quite small. Kimchi and doenjang stew were both really good. A tiny bit spicy, but super satisfying. There's even meat in them. Egg souffle was fluffy and light. Soft serve was a good way to end the meal. It was as milk soft serve with strawberry sauce. I wanted the black sesame one, but it seems they rotate their soft serves. Ventilation isn't great, so be prepared to smell like bbq when you exit.
