This is a great place to go to for your vegan / eco-friendly /organic products. I love that it's 5 minutes from my house in case I'm too lazy to go to Whole Foods. Staff is always nice and they have a small but decent selection of health foods. They're part of a co-op program if that's something you're into. What a nice little find it was coming across the George Street Co-op the other day when I was working from home. Having grown up in East Brunswick, and having lived for many years in New Brunswick, I'm not sure how this place eluded me for so long. Located right on the equator of gentrification and the scary old hood, the GSCO is tucked away on a block I had never before driven down. The closest I ever came was visiting the Elks Club next door, because that's where the annual Melody reunion takes place. (Anyone remember The Melody?) :) I was also surprised to find a private parking lot on the premises. Beware though, only a handful of these spots are reserved for patrons of the GSCO. The rest are for the Elks Club, and there is no shortage of unfriendly signage warning you that your car will be quickly towed if you choose the wrong spot. Luckily, I choose wisely. I found the GSCO via Google while trying to find a new Vegan cafe to grab lunch in. There are so few Vegan-friendly cafes in the area, it's almost impossible to be a Vegan in Central Jersey without making all your own food at home. GSCO actually delivers the best of two worlds: an all-organic food and produce market with a large assortment of Vegan products, and an upstairs cafe where you can grab lunch and freshly-juiced juices. I didn't have time to really look through the store, but we did have a delicious lunch in the cafe. As other reviewers have noted, GSCO definitely feels a bit worn-down. Housed in a very old building, this is to be expected, but I frankly think this adds to the charm. It is not by any means dirty. The upstairs cafe does have that hippie/hipster vibe, with some old couches and tables set about, and the requisite guitar hanging on the wall for any patron who wishes to knock out a few tunes while killing some time. And there were definitely a few characters who came in and out of the cafe while we were there, but again, this is what makes these kinds of places unique. I have been to other places like this where the vibe can be super-pretentious, but I did not experience that here. I am the furthest thing from a Hippie, and only a few months ago, I was making fun of most Vegans for their diet and self-righteous attitudes. (Boy, have things changed.) The vibe here is very friendly and relaxed, and is exactly the kind of place I would enjoy coming to for a bite to eat and to get away from the hustle and bustle of my everyday life. Most food co-op's require membership, but not here. The GSCO's market and cafe are both open to the public. This made it a no-brainer to try. The first part of my order was a freshly-made green juice. It was delicious. (I really need to figure out how to make my home juices taste as delicious as these.) For lunch, I had the Vegan veggie burger wrap which was also excellent. My wife ordered the hummus wrap, which she enjoyed. Simply prepared and grilled in an old-fashioned George Foreman contraption, my sandwich really hit the spot. With the juice included, I was more than full. And our entire lunch came out to around $20, which is a great deal. One thing I've learned about trying to eat Vegan is that it costs a lot of money. Organic produce and Vegan products are expensive. Add in markups and the like, and lunch for one can often run in excess of $20 per person at a lot of Vegan cafes. And while the cafe selection here at the GSCO is very small, there's just enough variety for me to get these guys in the rotation without getting bored any time soon. Next trip I will definitely be checking out the store, and in particular, the produce. Several reviewers have noted that the produce here is great quality and significantly cheaper than stores like Whole Foods. And I'd much rather give my money to a place like this than Whole Foods any day. Who knows? Perhaps we'll even join the co-op. I'm not even sure what that entails, but I certainly like supporting things that make me happy. And this place made me very happy. Check them out! read more

I love co-ops as a concept but I have to say this is the least organized co-op I have encountered. Basically, figure out what items are worth it for you to get here and get those items here. On a super positive note, they carry these carob dipped rice cakes in peanut butter and mint that are AMAZING! Try these!!! That being said, this is also a worthy choice if you wish to pick up bulk items. I stock up on rolled oats and organic spices at half to a fourth of the cost of me buying these items individually in a regular store. Just bring your own container and have the staff measure & tare the container so that you can refill it each time you come (make sure you ask them to write the weight on the container to save you time). This is a small location and from my understanding, I ended my membership at the end of last year, they are in a management transition phase and are working on making the store operate better. These changes are not yet visible to me as a sporadic shopper though. Some of the reasons why I ended my membership were disorganization and lack of stock of the few items I could only get at this location. I also found that some of the items I thought I could only get here can be brought at Anna's Health Food Store in Highland Park across the river. read more

I come here twice a week in between my classes to get snacks. They often have half or quartered watermelons and honeydews for sale which are great for eating right away. Other good snack options are the Wallaby Australian yogurts, the organic string cheese, the little almond butter packets, the apples, and the Kombucha. I'm trying to decide if I should become a member or not, because I live in NYC and can't really do my grocery shopping in New Brunswick. I love to see a place like this in a city like New Brunswick which has mostly gross food places. They prefer you pay cash when buying less than $10.00 worth of goods. read more

I should probably drop to 1 star from 2 but wouldn't really be accurate. Maybe 1.5. I'm probably done with this place. They are always out of everything I need. Of the 8 or 9 bulk coffee containers, they were all empty except one decaf and a flavored. Finally, after like 7 visits, they had roasted pepitas... that was pure luck I guess. The herbs I need they are usually out of. They had maybe two days worth of the herb I went for today. And forget calling to check... that's always an exercise in futility. The shelves are simply empty. It's sad. They own the building outright and don't have to pay taxes since they are a non-profit org. That should be a strength but it is a double edged sword. They simply subsist... as long as they can pay the utilities they don't really need a good business plan, and they don't have one... and haven't for decades. They occasionally buy new stock, have gross or overpriced produce, and a few snack items. If you live nearby you can stop by and scrounge enough for a snack or meal, but as a destination for groceries, this ship has sailed. The real nail in the coffin during this visit is that they stopped renting parking from the Elks club, so unless you find a nearby meter you're pretty screwed. I guess it's supermarkets, Princeton Whole Earth Center or Amazon for my needs now. Even though it's less than ten minutes from where I live, all my trips to this place end up being wasted ones. So glad New Brunswick has a place like this. All organic, all healthy and all good prices. I come here quite frequently to get specific items when I'm looking for healthy or vegan options. Visually, this place isn't anything to write home about. The items they carry however, are hard to find and all organic. With all the crap that they put in food these days, it's great to have a place like this where you can come and be proactively healthy. I'm not talking just veggies either, I'm talking chips and salsa, etc.. They also have a health cafe upstairs where they serve various breakfasts that are delicious and healthy. They had some vegan pancakes up there once that were delicious. Again, this place could use a better location and overall look as it does have a very slightly unkept vibe. But it's the furthest thing from unclean and everything there is great if you're a healthy person. You can get just about anything you'd regularly shop for except meat. Great spot. read more

I personally am a huge fan of the co op. There's not much vegan fare in NB so I was so happy to discover this tasty place! I come here every weekend for a quick lunch. They offer a wide variety of veg ready-made sandwiches and some soups. They also have many snacks and some produce. Like a mini-whole foods, they carry the necessities like Diya non-dairy cheese and rice dream ice cream etc. Love the co-op! read more

The George Street Food Co-op is an important addition to the New Brunswick community and is a lifeline for people who want to eat healthy or have diet restrictions. With a large variety of fresh fruits and veggies, as well as many standard foods essential for vegetarians and vegans, like Vegenaise, this store is to be recommended by anyone who wants to maintain their health. One especially nice aspect is the large variety of Field Roast products for sale. These are roasts and sausages made entirely of vegan ingredients. Products like these make going vegetarian or vegan a lot less troublesome. The staff is always courteous, hours are convenient, and the location almost always has ample parking. They appreciate it when customers bring their own bags. They also accept major credit cards. A delight. read more

Finding this place has really been a bonus for me. I was totally spoiled in Philly with two Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's within walking distance of my place. But now I live here. And I still don't own a car, I'm fighting the Jerz on that one! So this is the only place for me to get my fix of non-standard grocery store fare. Anyway, it has almost everything I want crammed somewhere between the floor and the ceiling in one of the 5ish? rows. Lots of gluten free goodies, veggie faves, vegan marshmallows (I can't get enough of those), and bulk grains and spices. It's obvious a lot of careful planning went into selecting the inventory. Mayhaps a little pricey, but nothing I'm not used to, being a former Whole Foods devotee. read more

Ah hidden on the side streets of downtown New Brunswick rests this little jewel. Though the prices are higher than Trader Joe's (my crack!), the money I save in gas trekking all the way to Joe's or even Whole Foods balances it all out. The shop is tiny but packed with all of your boho favorites in food, bath and body products, essential oils/herbs, and bulk goods. There's even some stuff that you can carry out for a quick lunch. They'd like you to bring cash but they take credit cards and everyone by now should have their own bags to carry your goods in. I don't so I just carry out by hand...lol. They do have plastic bags though. There's also a little cafe opening up upstairs it seems so you will be able to linger and chill a bit. I'll update once I try it. It's a small and nice health food store in the heart of New Brunswick. I love going there to get something quick however I must say that the selection is not very big. The "organic milk" that they sell can be purchased at the local shop rite. The prices are slightly higher than at the whole foods. I love supporting the moms and pops stores but they have to update the verity and rethink the prices. read more

I was going to pass by this place on my way through N.Brunswick today so I decided I'd take down the address and hit it up... it is VERY cramped, not a huge selection of anything but had some good prices on herbs & spices... I picked up some cut Yerba Mate which I haven't tried yet, I'm excited to see how strong it is (or isn't). I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to shop here but it was cute and the staff was friendly. read more

I love the idea of co-ops and having local, ethically sourced fresh food just down the street. The actual food stock in here is plentiful and deserves 4 stars, but the produce gets a 1, so I'll be nice and end on a 3. I bought a variety of fresh fruit and veg when I first moved here, and none of it tasted fresh. The cucumber was too soft and rotted quickly (1 day?), the apples were mealy and tasted awful, and the bananas could not be eaten on their own and thus went into smoothies. It wasn't all bad: the kale was nice, as were the mushrooms and onions. But for a co-op, which should pride itself on fresh produce, this was not good. Unfortunately, Trader Joes and Wegmans are much better options for fruit and veg. read more

The place is tiny and the staff isn't very helpful. I don't shop here often because of their prices and quality ( a couple of times I've found products on the shelf that are past their expiry date). But, they do have a decent selection of vegan products including sweet & sara marshmallows, amy's frozen dinners, tofurky sausages, a few kinds of vegan cheese, go max go candy bars, primal jerky strips and go macro's macrotreats. One of the biggest draws for me is that they sell a few varieties of bobbi's hummus which is a staple in my house. The hubby always stocks up on the loose leaf darjeeling tea. read more

Love this place. It has some products that are typically hard to find even in other health food stores such as the diva cup (environmentally friendly menstrual alternative to tampons and pads) , bentonite clay, and tiger balm (good for aches, smells great) to name a few). Have also got this amazing essential oil thing for sinuses a year ago and I love it. Their bulk items are pretty reasonably priced. And I like their selection of ice cream (vegan options! I got blood orange and mango sorbet today, they also have the so delicious brands). I'm a sporadic shopper here, since the place is a few miles away from me. It's been great whenever I need a few vegan kitchen items and am in the neighborhood. I'm familiar with co-op systems and support the idea whenever possible. The overall energy of the staff seemed to have been mixed for me. this is a vegetarian/health food store, established in the 1970's, when vegetarian and health foods were hard to find. inside the following brackets is a cursory explanation of what a "co op" aspect means. feel free to skip it, or go to http://strongertogether.coop/ for more info. [being a co op, you join by investing and becoming a shareholder (nominal amount, maybe $50, i forget). once a shareholder, you can donate your labor, and the more you work, the more your discount, up to 25%. if you choose not to work, your discount is 5%. in addition to the discount, a member benefit is to have a vote in some policy changes. its run by a board of directors, a collection of committees and a manager. very bureaucratic, very political, and lots of drama if you get involved.] but you don't have to get involved to buy the food, you can just treat it like a small, overpriced health food store. shopping here, i have found almost everyone to be warm and friendly, if a little light on the knowledge of what's in the store. i have to agree that the produce is kind of pitiful. i also agree that the stock is never consistent. you can find staple items out of stock for weeks on end so it can never be your grocery store, even if you do eat vegetarian and health foods on a daily basis. check expiration dates carefully, because rotating stock isn't their strong suit, neither is proper refrigeration. also check any frozen foods for signs its been thawed, and refrozen. one good part of this store is the ability to buy dried herbs and spices in bulk, the only other local place i know of where you can do that is Whole Earth in Princeton.* unfortunately, once again, the inconsistent stock makes this hard to count on. pricing is way out of line with any other store i've seen, pretty much cancelling out the "discount." you also might be asked if you found everything you're looking for but be warned: if you answer no, you will get a very long winded explanation about co op governance rather than a straight answer about the item you wanted. and please bear in mind when reading complaints from other reviewers: people with strong opinions here tend to be those who were initially enthusiastic about the co op mission, then disillusioned by the disorganization and mismanagement at this particular one. there's an extremely strong sense of community here, which for a lot of people is a good thing, depending how well you like the few people who dominate every committee. as a store, it kinda blows. as a collective, it also kinda blows because one or two people pretty much run the show and hardworking people who don't play ball are quickly turned off and leave. though the co op has existed for decades, there's less than 200 members, and most of them are less than 4 years, which says a lot. it would be great if our area could have a worker-owned, ethical food store. there are enough like-minded people to keep a such a place in business. unfortunately, this one just isn't it. try Greentopia in Highland Park or Whole Earth in Princeton if you're interested in an independent store. or, just go to any major chain grocery store, where you are likely to find at least as much, if not more, organic vegetarian foods. * since writing this review, i have discovered another source of bulk herbs and spices, also in Princeton. it's called Savory Spice Shop, and it's on Spring St read more

Almost entirely organic, almost entirely vegan (there is some high class eggs, cheese, milk and yogurt). It's more than the choice produce and beauty supplies (some home made from local herbalists), this wonderful cooperative has a huge that can't be topped. Follow the steps up to the cafe, read the inspiring words on the walls and gaze into the gorgeous mural and you'll find the coziest place to kick back and listen to tunes, read a book, socialize with some happening people and grab yourself an all organic juice or smoothie. And if you're real hungry have one of the tasty wraps, and I hear they'll be serving salads soon as well-finally!! More than all this, the George St Co op hosts a plethira of events, ranging from blue grass jams, open mic nights (every Thursday starting at 7:30pm), game nights, movie nights and more. for someone like me, this place is a two-generation time warp: were the 60s really that dull? so shabby-genteel? food's mostly ok, tho i rarely go beyond a hot soup, a leathery-looking spinach wrap and maybe a lemon powerbar: i can do shabby-genteel too, and imo leathery dough can taste of virtue or at least restraint. upstairs lounge, prolly not the right word for it, has overall tone of ken kesey goes to starbucks for the bad decor/vue. merry pranksters musta decorated the stairway the last decade they visited next door at the new bruns pub libe. i go often, but ymmv read more
