I guess I'm spoiled by living in a very large city and have a higher expectation for ambiance for a steakhouse, but we walked in and it looked more like a barbecue joint. With large dead animal heads on the wall. There were 2 deer, a doe and a buck. An elk. A bighorn sheep. A Longhorn bovine. And an exotic nilgai. If that doesn't say this is where people like to hunt, while we were viewing the eclipse, we encountered a couple who stopped on the way to their hunting lease. An extra star for the service. The people were nice and helpful. We were kind of demanding and they met all our requests promptly and pleasantly. The food. The steaks had a strong, strange taste. The best I could figure was it was liquid smoke. You're not fooling anyone into thinking you're cooking over a mesquite fire by marinating your steaks in liquid smoke. At least you're not fooling me. Perfectly cooked steaks rendered nearly inedible by the overwhelming, weird flavor. My tablemate's liver was so undercooked it was bloody. I don't think liver is supposed to be served rare. The salad was really good. Other sides were meh. The green beans were canned. French fries looked like they originated frozen out of a bag. The potato skin appetizer was good. The broccoli fresh but mushy - or possibly frozen as well? The cheesecake was good but they served it upside down with the crust on top? The wines were average - drinkable, but I think the wine at Olive Garden is better? I wanted to go to the Mexican restaurant but got overruled by the two guys. I'll hold that I may be wrong about the mesquite, but I did not see or smell any sign of a wood/charcoal fire. read more

Solid...I was in a group of 3 and we arrived 15 minutes prior to closing, however all 3 dishes appeared & tasted like they were made during the middle of the day...our waitress was GREAT with a GREAT ATTITUDE...she was cheery and engaging and helpful...GREAT JOB for the end of the night...we ordered Wings, Oysters, & a Turkey with Avocado & all 3 dishes were tasty ( I had the Turkey w/avocado & mushrooms...it was tasty & I had a wing from my buddy's plate)...I'm impressed read more

Not entirely excited about this place. I would need one more go to truly have a more refined review. The visit started off good with rolls that that were very tasty and the service was quick with our drinks. However, as guests came in we were less and less greeted and checked on. When a big party came in I couldnt wave down our waitress to ask a question, so I had to finally go to the front and ask the hostess. For my meal, I got a 7oz NY strip with a Caesar salad and broccoli. The cook seemed to have lost confidence because half my steak looked cooked and the other looked like it was left on the grill for half the time. The seasoning was amazing, so if it was cooked properly I would have finished it. The salad was delicious chopped romaine, but the Parmesan was nothing but the artificial powdered cheese, so underwhelming. Lastly, the broccoli was cooked/steamed the way I liked, but it had some weird flavor, bacon fat??? I'm truly unsure. I didn't finish my steak or broccoli, but I would go back to try once more. read more

For being in a town in the middle of nowhere, I was impressed! Came here for lunch with a group of coworkers on a Thursday afternoon. Service was prompt and friendly. The menu was extensive and had a variety of steak, salad, sandwiches, fish, and more. There was even a chalkboard with several daily specials. I ended up ordering the fresh flounder broiled (there was also fried or blackened) that came with rice, coleslaw, hush puppies, and two sides. For my sides I chose fries and green beans with bacon. The food was priced very well, mostly considering how much you get, and was quite delicious. The flounder was soft and fresh, albeit full of butter. The fries were steak fries and quite good, and the green beans were full of flavor. I was very pleased with this place and would come here again. read more

From a small town to trying to make it a famous steak house. Don't get me wrong when your hungry your hungry but wasn't really pleased with my meal. The rolls tasted like I got the last 2 in the packet and ribs were soused in BBQ sauce. Even though the ribs were the size of a full rack. Now the ribs were tasty however little cold to taste. Loaded mashed potatoes were topped with low end hard bacon bits and a little runny. Would I stop here again.... Maybe give the Mexican restaurant up the street a go first then this again. Other then I'm no longer hungry and will not starve tonight I will carry on my way. If your hungry stop in great service friendly staff but food needs a little work. read more

The food is not bad for the area. This is actually my second time visiting this restaurant and the first time really wasn't anything to write a review about. Unfortunately this time I had to make an exception. I stopped by to grab a bite to eat and as I was craving quality steak, I figured this would be a logical choice. I ordered the Wild West Shrimp, The George West Ribeye with loaded mashed potatoes and sweet potatoe fries. I would have liked some green vegetables such as brocolli or asparagus but seems that healthy (except for green beans) is off the menu at this particular location. The appetizer arrived rather quick but after the first few bites I realized that I may have over-payed for what was essentially frozen battered shrimp with a side of sweet sauce. Thirty-five minutes into the service and the main course arrived. At first glance it did not look right. As I was already regretting the double starches of my side items, it did not make it any better to see the over browned sweet potatoe fries and the loaded mashed potatoes, which for a restaurant this expensive, would have thought they would have at least added some freshly cooked pieces of bacon and not that generic sprinkle on substitute. Reluctantly I tried a few pieces of the sweet potatoe fries and not to my surprise, I bit into a cold fry. So I set that aside, tried some Mash and what can I say about that... it was mashed potatoes with unnecessary sprinkles of sadness. I moved that aside as well. Finally to the grand finale, the George West 12 oz. Ribeye. As far as presentation goes, it looked like a real steak so there was no complaint in appearance. Having said that, trying to cut through that steak was like... well, it was tuff. I ofcourse, needed to at least get the flavor profile and perhaps, there was something nice to write home about. Unfortunately it was not to be. There was no real flavor profile. There was no essence of a special wood that was used to infuse flavors, no seasonings to enhance the flavor of the beef and no real indication of aging of the beef for quality. I was undoubtedly very disappointed and could not finish my meal as I was worried I may get sick from it. The picture on this review is how the plate was left after I finished. The waitress was nice enough to ask me how my food was and I ofcourse I did not want to lie about it. She did offer to get me another one, but as I did not want to make my lunch venture last another hour, I opted to politely decline and pay for the full meal. It is not all negative ofcourse, the place was really nice and the staff was quite friendly. If I was to recommend a meal here it would the bread. It is served fresh as you await your order and it tastes great. I'm not sure if I see myself coming back to this restaurant anytime soon. I hope this review serves not as to bash them, but hopefully to give them a customer's honest opinion about the quality of the food. read more

There isn't much in terms of interior design, but they let the food do the talking here, and that's all you need at the end of the day. It's slim pickings for places to eat in GW, so when my coworker said a new steakhouse opened I figured it couldn't hurt to try it out. The folks who work here are really friendly, the homey dining area is really clean and they have A LOT to choose from on their menu. I figured since I was in Texas, I'd try some chicken fried steak and my coworker got a NY Strip. I honestly didn't know what to expect for chicken fried steak, so I quickly googled it. Steak that's battered, fried and smothered in gravy - how could I go wrong? Our food was great (I had a bite of the NY strip), and it was fairly priced IMHO. We ordered the ribeye and as we were coming in the cook watched us sit.. our steak was rancid, never had rancid meat before, but when we asked the server to smell she agreed something wasn't right, then the unsanitary looking cook came out with a raw steak saying this is from the same cut and nothing is wrong with the meat?? How unprofessional. I told him the raw steak had a bad stench, and I didn't want rancid meat he stormed off upset. Mediocre place, salad had 3 tiny grape tomatoes, 3 cucumber halves, and a small crouton with lettuce. Not that big of a deal but I like a good salad when I eat steak. I'm going to update my review since I gave this place another shot. I avoided everything I ordered last time in hopes that might fair better. I took away a star... Minus one star for being terrible. Then I'm going to add one star back for being consistent... Consistently terrible. Cream of chicken soup from a can? Pasta boiled to death God knows how long ago? From the outside you wouldn't guess it was a fine dining experience but it has been the best food I've had during my 5 day traveling trip. Was heading to Harlingen but once I headed south on 37 out San Antonio the options for food is very limited. Used the app to find this gem a few miles off the Interstate. The steaks were excellent and all the food was very tasty. Would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting some good food. read more

Food was good, but the steak was overpriced for what you got, not that great of a cut of meat. I had the flounder which was the special for the night and it was VERY good. The lettuce in the Cesar salad tasted chemically.. like it hadn't been washed.. but over all it was a good place to eat in a tiny town. We will go back. read more
