We were traveling north on I 25, and wanted to eat... passed by the first two of three exits to the town, and got off on the third. I did a search for Restaurants on my in car system and who would have ever thought a small town could have so many eateries. We decided to play it "safe" and go to Carl's, but as we were heading into the main part of town, we passed by Georges and even though it was 1:30 or so, the parking lot had a LOT of cars and pickups. Went about 1/2 mile further, then did a U turn and went back. Can't go wrong when a place is packed at that hour on a Saturday. The wait staff was very friendly, and was obvious this is a hangout for many locals, as a lot of folks coming in or leaving got lots of hugs from the friendly workers. I had a cheeseburger with the green chile strips... that $.60 option is a must for almost everything....and wife had the smothered chile burger with red chile. Both were good, but I thought the smothered was overpriced compared to a burger, it had a big bun which the wife didn't eat, but the red chile was really good. read more

Bingo! A perfect specimen of the genre. Whatever genre that may be. The name says "drive-in," but you can't drive in. It's not a diner. Maybe it's just a cafe. Or a joint. Whatever it is, it's swell. I would give it five stars but for some picky personal preferences that aren't worth mentioning here, and but for the fact that very, very few low-down, small-town, basic-menu, plastic-basket places can get five stars. But dang, George's came close. (See my review of a plastic basket burger place in Estes Park: two stars.) The green chile is just as good as everyone says. It's of the thin, kinda reddish, home-made style, just barely hot, and it's flavorful and fabulous. Classic southern Rockies cuisine. My very own home-made green chile is thicker, and the pork chunks are larger, but I'm not going to complain about what George is doing. We kept it simple--burgers and chile, but greedily eyed the fried chicken next to us. The burgers were from fresh meat and were hand-formed (my wife said, "one of the best burgers I've had in quite a while"). Fries were fresh-cut. I think the rings are frozen. They're the battered kind, not the crumb-dipped kind, and they're good, but I think they came off the truck. The staff is super-friendly. George (or his successor, or imitator, or clone) wanders the tables and greets folks like Mario at Babbo. Most of the people there know each other--greetings and hollers and hugs. There is no decor. It's um... simple. But it's clean, and it's perfect. Not a pretension to be found. If George's was in my home town, I'd be there once a week. Twice a week. If they added a burrito, I'd be there three times a week. Actually, I thought I saw a burrito, but I couldn't find it on the menu. Maybe it's an off-menu special for locals. One last thing: It's incredibly inexpensive. We got out of there for less than eight bucks apiece. Go there. read more

Best. Green. Chile. Ever. Get the chile fries. Found this place on here, had to try it while scoping out the town my husband will be staying at for a couple weeks. We hit the lunch rush, little bit of a bummer. Waited outside, when we got in the door, waitress handed us a menu and said, "I'll take your order and by then we should be able to get you seated!" Never had that happen before, but it worked, and we got seated before our food came. It was obvious we were from out of town, this place has a great homey feel and everyone else seemed to know each other on a first name basis! We had basic hamburgers with fries, it was great! Even bought some green chile to take home, who would really believe that you would find the best green chile in the small town of Walsenberg? Luckily the husband has to work down there for a week and his hotel is just a block from this place. I'm sure he will eat just fine while away from home. read more

Heading south to NM and stopped in Walsenburg for a lunch break. Right off the interstate is George's, which is located in what I remember as the old Pizza Hut location on the north end of town. George's reminds me of the traditional route-66 style food joints that are family owned and always cram packed with locals....that's how you know it's good eats at fair prices. Featuring a good selection of burgers, sandwiches, full meals that encompass the American and Tex-Mex spectrum. I chose the Chili Burger with green chili and onions. The order was quick despite a packed house. Served open-faced, the portion features a 1/3 lb patty covered with American cheese and smothered completely with a rich green chili, onion, and tomato chunk sauce with a very hearty portion of home fries on the side. It was an awesome lunch that I couldn't finish. Service was fast, friendly, and tables were cleaned quickly. Overall it was a very affordable meal cooked fresh and tasty, and made my stop in well worth it. George's is also right across from the Phillips 66 gas station for those passing through that need a quick top off the tank. read more

We stopped in last weekend on our way to Durango. The only reason this place is busy is because there are so few eating options in Walsenburg. When we walked in the door the waitress shoved menus in our hands and demanded we order before seating us. The wait to be seated was only about 10 minutes. She seated us by glaring at us as she walked by with food for another table and motioned with her head to an empty table across the room. The table had not been bussed yet and still had the dirty dishes from the previous guests. We dutifully sat down anyway. After another 10 minutes or so, the waitress stopped by and found that she had seated us at a dirty table. No apology or anything, she just started reaching across us to grab dirty plates and such and smeared a dirty rag over the table. Appetizing. Our food arrived soon after. The fries were limp and tasted like they had been cooked in old oil. They were quite awful. My kids and husband had burgers, I had a BLT. They were edible, but not great. The burgers and BLTs we make at home were better. I hate BLTs made with shredded lettuce - it all falls out of the sandwich. Next time we make this trip we will stop at the gas station for a snack and wait to eat lunch in Alamosa. read more

We were traveling through from the western slope of Colorado and i must say If you find yourself in Walsenburg this is a great little stop. The green chile cheeseburger was delicious. There's also something magical about the fries. So so so good. The corn dog kids meals were also a huge hit with our kids. Definitely worth a stop. read more

We are in Walsenburg from Denver 8-10 weekends per year to visit relatives and ride ATVs.. They live 16-miles from George's, so we stop in at the restaurant first thing Friday afternoon before continuing on to our relatives' house. We usually drive 16-miles each way for lunch on Saturday to have it again. The green chile cheeseburgers are the best I have had anywhere. Everything about them is perfect and so flavorful. Get extra chile for your fries. The fried okra is a good app. This place is worth cheating on your diet when you pass through Walsenburg. read more

I just got your standard eggs, meat and potatoes breakfast but they have a homemade salsa that they serve with all meals and you should just put that stuff on everything. This is a jewel right off the highway! It is a small town diner/cafe that draws the locals and travelers that yelp or happen by! We had breakfast here and it was delicious! Don't let the outside fool you. Go in for a great breakfast. This was a perfectly done breakfast for our stop on the way to the Sand dunes. We shared the Super Combo pancake meal with an extra side of potatoes and toast. We were fully satisfied with the meal. Wished I would have taken a picture of our meal. Our waiter, Joel was very friendly, interested in our travels, knowledgeable of the area and a pleasure to talk with. Restrooms were private, clean and roomy. This place was recommended as a place to stop for a good burger. Small but wait wasn't long. Very friendly mom n pop place where everyone seemed to know everyone. Asked a family eating next to us for advice on which road was the best to take to Santa Fe and they were so nice and helpful. They said weather was bad one road and to take the highway. Hamburger was good and fresh. Not a thawed frozen burger. Will ask for crispier fries next time though. All n all good read more

While vacationing at Family Camp in Westcliffe, we stopped in for lunch one day while we were out sight seeing. We absolutely loved the food and the staff. I was completely impressed at how the owner/manager knew all of his regulars by name. Made me wish I could be a regular! Our waiter was very nice and efficient. I had the steak sandwich and it had real steak (don't laugh - the steak sliders at another restaurant were actually hamburger). My husband had the rueben and the corned beef was piled high! We had a great experience and will definitely be back next year when we are in town again! read more

A++++, We stopped in the Saturday after July 4 on our way home to TEXAS. They were slammed but handled it differently than anything I've ever seen before. The waiter greeted us with a smile and explained that he would take our order while we waited, then when there was a seat available it would be delivered within a few minutes. The dining area is not large so we opted to wait outside as we needed to stretch our legs anyway. True to his word as soon a seat was open we were seated and our food came in less than 5 minutes. The food: comfort food at its best. Hand cut fries, hand formed hamburger patties, etc. Not a crumb left on our plates! Good Job George's. You do good business. read more

Camping at Lathrop State Park and had heard of this place but was our first chance to eat here. Seems to be a favorite of locals. I had a patty melt which was yummy. It comes with chips but was just right for lunch. Hubby had a Reuben and his only complaint was that it could have had a bit more thousand island dressing. Wish I would have gotten a piece of coconut cream pie to go. May try the breakfast tomorrow as the weather here this weekend isn't ideal. read more

We stopped in on our way to the Sand Dunes, just myself, my husband, and our two young children. Hubs and I had the taco lunch which came with 3 large, tasty tacos. The ground beef was flavored with red pepper flakes and topped with chopped iceberg lettuce, diced fresh tomatoes, shredded cheddar, and optional diced white onion on a crunchy corn tortilla. We also topped them with the mildly spicy salsa our waitress provided. My husband loved the tacos. I thought the beef needed a little more flavor...maybe a little garlic would have made them better. The kids both had hamburgers from the kids menu. I quite enjoyed the bite I snuck from my daughter's plate. It made me wish I had ordered a burger instead. My daughter had a yummy bowl of applesauce as a side, while my son had fries. The fries looked freshly made in-house, but needed to have been cooked longer. The atmosphere was quaint and enjoyable with a local flavor. The staff was friendly enough. I'd go back, given the chance. read more

Great tasting green-chile burger (thought I got funny looks from my server???) that I ate on the road. Food poisening kicked in before I arrived at my destination.
