Found my self in New Ulm for 3 days for work, decided to give George's a try on our last evening there. Wednesday evening, early we walk in at 6:15. The hostess asked if we had a reservation, I kind of laughed to my self, the place was busy about 1/3 full, I said no but we would happily sit at the bar. We ordered a couple Whiskies, the pour was generous, I'm thinking well this is starting well. Within 30 minutes the place was packed, every table taken and people waiting for room at the bar! I wasn't starving so I chose the smallest steak on the menu, the filet. Absolutely perfect in every way, medium to medium rare, perfectly seasoned. My buddy ordered the strip with added shrimp, again all wonderfully prepared. The staff, all pleasant and engaging. George was behind the bar greeting the regulars, very well run establishment. Found them via a Yelp search while visiting Schell's. Was seated at the bar by the owner himself. Very nice guy who makes good recommendations! Had a salad, king cut prime rib and green beans (skipped the potato). It was all excellent! If you're a bourbon fan their selection is first-rate, including many allocated bottles. What a fun find! My husband and I were in town for work and landed on George's. We met the owner, George who was very personable, his wait staff and servers were just as fantastic. All their dressings were made from scratch and you can tell, especially for someone like me who doesn't like bottled dressing! I must confess, we had low expectations, having done the bar steaks scene in the past with little to no success & seafood seemed out of place. I ordered the filet, shrimp, salad & Georges fries. I was thrilled that the filet was highlighted with light seasoning and perfectly cooked. The "fries" were delightful and the salad was as would be expexted but with a lovely thick ranch - dip quality! I could have done without the shrimp, truthfully. We came in on a Friday night and were seated in a cramped upstairs table. I ordered the tuna which was fishy tasting and a off brown color in the middle. I have had better fish from a can! This was considered a premium fish so cost $33. The bake potato was good at least. The steak was ok my husband ordered but his fries , which were roasted potatoes, were so salty he couldn't even eat them. PERFECTLY prepared steak, homemade salad dressings, warm biscuits, and a skilled in finer dining waitstaff. Attentive, conversational, and good advice from our server made it easy to tip her well. This was a fun Oktoberfest experience other than this night for dinner! Now this is a nice local place, homemade food, dressings...that sort of thing but my beef (no pun intended) came from the fact they have the words "Fine Steak" in the name. The steak I had was far from "fine" unless of course your sitting in the parking lot at Bonanza, drunk and lost thinking "this could be a place for a fine cheap steak". This was a $25 New York Strip that was pounded flat, lined with fat and not worth $12 let alone $25. They should be stripped of the name "Fine Steaks" and maybe just stick with Steak or OK meat products, something like that. The Veggies that came with it also consisted of 3 spears of asparagus and 1 carrot. But not just one carrot, one nickel sized slice of carrot. Both of our plates had the same one sad slice of carrot on it, really ( in fairness It was very good though)! I would definitely not go back here and if I would have thought on it a little longer may have even refused to pay full price and I have NEVER done that before in my life! Great steaks, chicken or fish! A great steakhouse that I would visit again. They cook their meat true to order so I would recommend ordering your steaks medium. I was surprised to realize that the cook seasoned the salmon after it was grilled as the seasoning was dusted on the garnish too. I might be temped to try that out at home to see how it plays with the flavor. All in all a must stop shop when visiting New Ulm. read more

It's spring break for my brother and I, and therefore my family has been given a rare opportunity to enjoy dinner together. Because this is a special occasion, we choose to go to George's, a spot not often frequented by my family, as we are generally not steak-eaters. This makes coming to George's even more of a special occasion. Our special dinner was a bit spoiled, however, by our service at George's. George himself opened us with open arms, introduced himself and learned our names, which was great, but the niceties seemed to stop there. Our actual waitress seemed unhappy to be serving us, giving us some attitude with our steaks. Our salads were not quite right, my mother's soup was forgotten about and then not good, and when I asked for a refill of my Shirley Temple I was instead given a tonic and grenadine (yuck). We felt as if we were burdening the restaurant in some way by choosing to dine there, which is never a good feeling as a patron of a restaurant. Our entrees were tasty, and perhaps we caught them on an off night, but I certainly hope this is not the norm for George's. It would be quite a shame. read more

I was in New Ulm $ Sleepy Eye all day and wanted a good meal before driving 2hrs back to St Paul. I wanted a good steak dinner and boy did this place fit the bill. I had a fillet mignon (medium rare) topped with just kosher salt (on request) & butter, a salt crusted baked potato, steamed vegetables and a complimentary chocolate truffle for dessert. Is a small town simple restaurant, nice decor, upscale for the area, fine if you are from the Twin Cities. I thought he steak was a bit done on the exterior but once I cut inside it was perfectly done and what I found unique was that the steak was served VERY hot off the grill which enhanced the presentation and taste experience. Come as you are and feel like an old friend of George's. It is not uncommon for George himself to welcome you at the door for seating at one of the booths, tables or bar. This is a small place that will leave you wondering how they produce the great food I've come to expect. To start with, I order a wedge of iceberg lettuce topped with a generous and scrumptuous serving of homemade blue cheese dressing. The wine selection is small but modestly priced. He also stocks a full choice of liquors and local Schell's beer on tap. George offers a full array of steaks, with flavor that will rival the best you've had. In general, I often times order the rib eye because of its flavor and tenderness. Not at George's, here I get the plain old sirloin smothered in mushrooms. The flavor, tenderness and lean cut will pleasantly surprise you. His fried potatoes can seem a little tough and dry, so I stick with the baked potato. The vegetable side is forgettable. The fish choices can be a gamble. It isn't always easy to keep fish fresh way out here on the prairie. Within the first few days of his tuna arriving, it is some of the best I've had any where. He offers it most generally as an appetizer called Tuna Shooters its served rare and spiced up with wasabi. I found that any issues that arise, are cheerfully resolved consistent with his motto of keeping his customers happy. It is true, the servers can show "attitude". It is too bad, I remind myself that it is not "about me". Probably some extra reminders from management about George's philosophy on good treatment of customers...George knows the drill. read more

Considering that we the only customers for awhile, service seemed awfully slow. George himself did come over to thank us for our patronage and we were impressed because we don't see that often.
