Salmon cakes with stewed tomatoes, and baked yam
    Tracy J.

Step back in time at this family restaurant. Simple meals with very good prices. Daily specials, soups, lots of American fare. I got the pork special which came with stuffing and gravy and two sides, and I got baked potato and a side salad. My husband got a burger and fries, not the waffle fries, but they're seasoned fries. The other couple we were with got the salmon cake special, which he liked, and said, tasted like crabcake and was good. And she got the stewed tomatoes, corn fritters and chicken fingers. Lots of seating, it's in a strip mall so plenty of parking.

Delicious food and friendly staff! My mom and I stopped here spontaneously, figuring it would be good home cooked food. It was! I had the chicken Cesar salad with a cup of french onion soup. (The french onion could use some melty cheese but it had good flavor nonetheless.) The salad had homemade croutons and grilled chicken. Mom had the spinach salad and she loved it.

Good flavor but kinda small. Ok I know I have gotten spoiled with good burgers. I ordered a patty melt today. Was surprised when I opened the grilled rye to find a hamburger paddy as thin as a White Castle burger and nut much bigger. I asked the server. She said they are supposed to be 1/4 lb but never weighed them. Pretty sad that a restaurant other than fast food would only give you a 1/4 lb burger. Fries were actually good and the waitress was very nice. Which is why I give 3 stars. Would have been less since I'm leaving still hungry but I'll just tell my stomach it's on a diet today.

I love it when hubby offers to treat me to breakfast, it's the one meal out that I refuse to treat myself to so it's always welcomed. This experience however left me wishing I would have just ate at home. Located in a shopping center we certainly didn't expect it to be so busy on a brisk, extremely cold Saturday morning. Once inside it was evident that cater to a more geriatric crowd. We waited a good 5 minutes standing awkwardly inside the crowded front area for someone to acknowledge and seat us. The check out line is also there so it's hard to distinguish between who is coming and leaving. First sign that maybe this wasn't going to be the best experience. I also thought it was a big gaudy to still have Christmas lights and decor in full light up mode in the middle of January but that's a pet peeve of mine. They also had a small table taking up space at the entrance where they tried to peddle handmade ( like Pinterest crafts gone wrong) items. I felt that wasn't needed and a poor use of that space. Once seated we were happy with the menu prices and choices. The prices were very fair and the restaurant appeared clean. Our waitress was nice and even helped hubby with his cellphone. Our meals came out faster than it took for us to be acknowledged and seated. From the looks of our orders; french toast and pancakes, we thought we would be happy with our meals. How can you mess those breakfast basics up? Well apparently you can. Hubby said his pancakes tasted like cardboard. My french toast was made of Texas toast and had nice crispy edges however it was the flavor of bland bread. I believe it was cooked in egg and milk only. There wasn't any sweetness whatsoever, nor any hit of vanilla or cinnamon. I smothered it in peanut butter and syrup to try to add flavor however the syrup was watered down to the point that it also didn't even have a hint of sweetness and was lacking the stickiness that syrup has. Hubby said the same thing. There is no way that syrup wasn't watered down. We're convinced of it. I don't know if they make their food so bland intentionally to cater to the older folks with dietary restrictions but I don't know why anyone young or old would pay for food with no flavor. it's a shame too because my french toast, other than lacking flavor, was cooked perfectly. Hubby's pancakes were a nice size. When we were done hubby went to pay, waiting in that long cashier line while I couldn't wait to escape to the car. If cashiering takes up that much time and space why not just collect at the table like normal restaurants do? Needless to say we won't be back, ever.

Eggs over medium, corned beef hash and rye toast

Great spot for a diner style breakfast, lunch or dinner. Prices are reasonable for a nice size serving. This is good homestyle cooking, nothing fancy. Service was very friendly and fast. Extra star for bringing a personal pot of coffee to leave on the table, no extra charge. Love that. I order my toast dry and ask for real butter on the side. Otherwise they use a margarine spread. Decor could use an update. Would love to see them go old school 1940's style.

My friend and I got the tenderloin tips on a salad, the Pittsburgh salad, and the tips were nicely done as requested, and everything was good. I typically like shoestring fries over other fries, but in this case, I think I would choose their regular house fries. The service is decent, but the young tall man who works there is never very friendly or cordial; I sometimes feel like we're bothering him. The ambience is OK, but it is one big open room and a bit loud. They maintained most of the prior decoration of motorcycles and decoration around the perimeter, with an industrial feel.

The burger eaters were generally pleased although one said her burger was overcooked. The salad eater said it was unexpectedly spicy. My Ultimate Grilled Cheese was anything but ultimate and anything but a grilled cheese consisting of a very mediocre backfin crab cake and gulp, one slice of cheese on extremely dry thick bread. The drink special was notably devoid of liquor all around. The place is industrial chic and while staff was intermittently attentive, our waitress only once asked if we were okay while she ran by. Mebbe next time will be better.

We had ridden the Strasburg Railroad earlier…read morein the day and were looking for a place to eat when I fired up Yelp and found the Tavern by Spring House Brewing. It is located on East Main Street in downtown Strasburg. The inside consists of a large main room with an L shaped bar, a number of TVs, and then a second dining room off to the side. Since no one was seated in the second room and we had twin four year olds with us, we chose that space. Unfortunately the TV in that room was broken, so we were not able to watch the Steelers game that was on. Aside from that, the room itself had a cozy and slightly eclectic feel. There was a decorated Christmas tree lit up in the corner near the staircase which gave the space a warm seasonal vibe. The walls were decorated with brewery signs and beer themed banners, and a bright yellow decorative mantel stood out against the darker wall colors. Overall it felt casual and welcoming and worked well for a family dinner. For dinner on this evening I went with the Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak while my wife chose the K Town Mac Bowl. The menu described my wife's dish as three cheese cavatappi pasta with smoked pork slaw, Korean BBQ drizzle, sesame seeds, and scallions. My sandwich was described as smoked chicken, American cheese, buffalo sauce, gorgonzola, onion frizzles, ranch drizzle, and a hoagie roll. I thought my sandwich ended up being good, especially since it was chock full of chicken. The hoagie roll was toasted and buttered nicely and added a good crunch, which the onion frizzles helped reinforce. The gorgonzola added a nice pungent pop of flavor. While I did get some buffalo flavor, I definitely could have used more. Because of that, the sandwich was a little on the drier side despite having cheese, buffalo sauce, and ranch drizzle. My fries were seasoned and had a nice texture, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I decided to go with a flight here. At Spring House Brewing, a flight consists of four beers and I chose the Cucumber Salamander, Backroads Shadows, Daily Planet, and Love and Rockets. The Love and Rockets ended up getting mixed up and I was instead served Grease the Poles. I started with the Cucumber Salamander, which is a sour. It was a bit tart right from the start and that carried through to the finish, with a little extra pucker at the end. Up next was Backroads Shadows, a lager with a crisp, clean start before the malts came through on the finish. This felt like a really good easy drinking beer. Third was Daily Planet, an IPA that had citrus up front followed by a solid hop presence that carried through the finish. Last was Grease the Poles, a pale lager that started off very clean before finishing with some lighter hop notes. Out of the bunch, the Cucumber Salamander was definitely my favorite. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Our food and drinks were good, and I would be interested in trying more of their beers.

We've been to the best places in the city and this most certainly is right up there if not better in some instances. But awesome all the same! For how busy they were, the server was very attentive and very accommodating as we were yapping away and constantly not ready with our orders so kuddos for the team and putting up with us! I love the mystery beer concept, its not great beer, but being from DC at like $2 a can, I am not passing that up, ever. And a cheap beer with a burger is the perfect combo! On to the burger... I have heard that this is a great burger... and I have to conclude that I agree though it is reminiscent of a Big Mac - just way better ingredients - it has to be the sauce they put on it... Anyway, nice size patty, good amount of toppings and a quality bun (not too soft, not too thick, bread soaks up some of the juices but doesn't fall apart). The mussels were quite excellent as well. It was a Thai curry broth the night we were there and it was drinkable, like soup... we did ask for extra bread... enough said. I am going to take a minute too and praise their spirit free cocktails. THIS IS HOW THEY SHOULD BE MADE. They used bitters, tonics, etc to craft something that tasted like a cocktail but without alcohol which means they were not sickly sugary concoctions, but expertly crafted beverages. Just really great options. All that said though, their espresso martini was one of the worst I have had. Just skip that.

We ordered 3 paninis and tenders, along with drinks. Beverages were served shortly after. Four to five couples & groups came and ordered after us. Oddly enough, their food was served first. We waited roughly 30-45 minutes. Didn't think anything of it, until one of the workers dropped the tenders we ordered for my child. Instead of immediately saying she would replace the tenders, she asked if it needed to be replaced. Logic dictates, especially if you work in the food industry and you, as the server dropped it on the counter replace the items immediately, no questions asked. Obviously, I want the items replaced. First & foremost, my child is hungry. Secondly, I paid for the food & expect my order to be fulfilled in its entitreity without racial bias! I confronted the server about her lack of common sense and unacceptable behavior. To which she said, "But you won't let me talk" or "You won't even listen to my side of the story". I mean cmon, you work in the food industry - take accountability! Why am I educating you on healthy food standards and food safety? I told the employee to sit down & her response was "You're not my mother". Real professional! Please note, as a mother I don't raise idiots. Her own mother would likely be disappointed in the way she took zero accountability for her lack of actions and decisions. I waved her away. It's quite obvious that she expected my child to eat tenders that were contaminated from when dropping it on the counter & my group, persons of color to excuse her behavior. We left the establishment, fully aware that the treatment we endured was racially driven. All the other customers who ordered after us were not people of color & somehow got their food before us! Outside, a person of color approached my group. She noted that she has also been mistreated due to the color of her skin & was treated as less than in the same location. DO NOT VISIT THIS PLACE! Employees are racist, lack human decency and common sense! Additionally, employees are improperly trained/educated on food safety.
