I had lunch here yesterday with a friend after church for Sunday lunch/brunch. I love the upscale ambience of the the place. The hosting staff are very welcoming and we were seated immediately. There are a variety of Southern brunch options including options for appetizers, entrees, and desserts. I had the Cakes and Eggs. It was good. The eggs were poached and served over crab cakes which more crab than cake, which always is a plus. I added a side of the pimento cheese grits which were wonderful and peaked my interest from the very beginning. I'm a fan and hope to return and try some of their desserts and other entrees. Went for the first time last night with our family as we were moving our daughter into UGA. In a small strip mall, somewhat casual but could dress a bit better then flight clothes. Emma was our server and was just delightful ! Knowledgeable of the menu and drinks , recommended a fine red blend for dinner . Food was silly good ! Started with gumbo AND bisque as our family always tries any gumbo on a menu - more like a yummy delicious Smokey stew, not a true gumbo. Bisque was so thick and creamy - think a dip not a soup. I ordered the eggplant pirogue , stuffed with crab and shrimp - fabulous and enough for two . Both daughters ordered the salmon - yum ! Husband got the seafood jambalaya topped with red fish - whaaaat!? Go there , get there , no regrets!! read more

It was absolutely amazing! Tried the deviled eggs ummmm delicious!!!! but I do recommend putting the pickle on top and eating it all together it definitely elevates it. Had the Redfish, Absolutely delicious, the Crab cakes, wow delicious, and finally the Jambalaya which we thought was more of a tomato stew verses what I would think a Jambalaya is but still very good but different. Now the drinks WOW! Had there special drink of the night which was Widow Jane whiskey w/peach and other good stuff was really good! Then the Porch Swing w/Tito's vodka w/muddled cucumber and ginger beer also other good stuff, now this was my fav but keep in mind I like vodka with water and lemon not into fancy or sweet drinks but the Porch Swing is wonderful. When you walk into George's Lowcountry Table, you might find its appearance rather inauspicious: It seems to have the decor and atmosphere of a "nice" generic restaurant attached to a 1990s Days Inn. But don't hesitate to give it a shot. The menu says that the restaurant's name honors "George," or George Davis, the owner of erstwhile Athens restaurants Harry Bissett's and Gus Garcia's, and that the owner here, Reggie DiSante, was once the chef at Bissett's. That's a pretty promising pedigree, because, as far as my foggy middle-aged brain can recall, Bissett's in the 1980s and 1990s was a not-bad-at-all simulation of a French Quarter dining experience. (And I say this as one who later lived in New Orleans itself for more than a decade.) George's takes the Bissett's culinary concept and expands it to the whole Southern American low-country--think both Louisiana Cajun and South Carolina/Charleston. You'll find Shrimp and Grits and jambalaya and crawfish ettouffee, plus other seafood and even fried chicken and steaks, on the menu. Speaking of crawfish ettouffee, the kitchen nailed that one. The sauce was both robustly spicy and well-balanced, and came with plenty of the succulent crustaceans. Sizeble portion, too,for $16. Deviled eggs with salmon were a very nice appetizer. The dining area, if rather nondescript, does have the benefit of being pretty quiet, and it's quite comfortable. Our party was a group of four older men on a golf trip who don't complain about anything, so the mere fact I'm writing this review should tell you something. The food was just not good. We ordered oysters to start and they were Luke warm. Oysters are usually served on a bed of ice and frankly it was a little scary eating room temp oysters. We left four of the dozen we ordered. Our salads arrived one minute before our entrees so we all know how that goes. One of our party ordered the hamburger. Our server didn't ask how he wanted it done so the chef must have decided he wanted it raw. When we told our server she apologized and moved on to the next table. I could go on but suffice it to say "one and done." I wish we had a better experience because we were all looking forward to George's. read more

They have a Tuesday special with oysters for $8.95. I got 1 order of the grilled and 2 orders of the raw oysters and a glass of wine. The grilled oysters were dry and I don't know if it was the way that they were cooked or if they set under the light too long because my waitress disappeared for a while. It was not busy at all when I went but my service was slow. They opened at 4pm and I arrived around 4:15pm. My waitress Brianna was also the host from what it looked like but it took her a long time to bring me my order. I watched 2 tables with different waiters who ordered after me get their food before me as well get the complementary bread without having to ask for it. Overall the food was good but the service could've been a lot better. I was also the only person of color in the restaurant so I do not know if that played a part in my service seeing as how I was Brianna's only table. read more

Reservations recommended. We didn't have them and the hostess almost seemed annoyed , but thankfully she was able to seat us. The evening we went, the vibe felt like a retirement community, filled with a more mature crowd that probably frequents GLT often. Our server did a nice job. We had a bit of a wait after placing our order and our drinks, appetizer, salad, and meal all came out at the same time. The grilled oysters had a nice flavor but really small and not a good value. The popcorn crawfish and crab cakes were OK. Overall it was an OK experience and food was decent, but nothing exciting. I am glad we tried it once, but we will probably not be returning. read more

It's in a strip business mall so the outside wasn't what we expected. Once inside, the decor is more upscale than we expected. Cloth tablecloths & napkins and candles. Our waitress brought small water glasses and a full bottle of water - European style - and a basket of small, delicious biscuits. We ordered the pimento cheese and fried okra appetizer. Both were good but the okra was best. The breading was a coarser corn meal than usual which gives a crunchier texture. We ordered cocktails. My drink, the Georgia Mimosa, was delicious and refreshing. One had a beer, one had a Porch Swing, and one had an Old-Fashioned. Both have muddled ingredients and both friends felt their drinks had a mushy bottom. My second drink was a margarita and it was good, too. We visited on a Thursday night and had the Prime Rib special, which comes with mashed potatoes and a veggie side [cauliflower that night]. The prime rib was tender and cooked perfectly. Had brunch here on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The fried okra and pimento cheese starter was good. Ended up dipping the okra in the cheese. I had the fried shrimp with thin sliced fried potatoes and Cajun corn. Everything was spot on. My wife had crawfish etoufee which she thought was one of the best she has ever had. My husband made reservations for 2 tonight at George's, which up 'til now was one of our favorite restaurants. After driving an hour to get there, we were told we had no reservations. Though there were several empty tables, we were turned away. Needless to say, we are very disappointed. I get that there is human error, but nobody did anything to try to accommodate us and we are regulars. Sigh read more

Food, never mind it took 20 minutes to get water, then the 4oz drinks were , Eh, ok at best and overpriced but the food... let's talk about the food, seafood jambalaya tasted like it came from the frozen section at Krogers. UGH... crab cakes were average at BEST... service was "like you know? O my god,like there's no one at the bar? Like you knoooooo? Jesus, get some real help or don't have a party of 30 in the big empty room, we barely could hear ourselves thinking... TWO STARS and that's generous !!!!! First and last time here. read more

I can't blame the servers. In a half full restaurant it took one and one half hours to get our food. Now the entree were good. Appetizers sucked. It was strange. Georges is good and horrible. It was weird. Horrifically long wait after terrible appetizers for descent entree. We're returning AU weekend with two tables of 6 so I know what to expect. A terribly long wait for dinner. How do you screw up a sausage appetizer? So basic yet they blew it. I've never had a server apologize so many times for having to wait. Icy cold, briny fresh Apalachacola fat boy select oysters are served with a sinus clearing searing hot horseradish that makes Tabasco curtsy. They sell creole food here. They toss in just enough coonass Cajun flavor to pack the pews in the Parrish on Sunday. Authentic gumbo and etoufee are loaded with Neptune's bounty. Po boys are huge and I'm not sure even Jerry Clower's mouth would go round. Crawfish are good. Shrimp better. Upscale decor is elegant and not overstated. Service is agreeable. The place is spotless clean. They have have nightly and happy hour specials. Well managed and you can tell employees are happy and proud of their food. You MUST to eat at George's, it is spectacular! Every menu item is lovely, especially the salmon. It has the best roasted tomatoes I've ever had! The biscuits they give you are delicious too. If you get a side salad, make sure to get the herb vinaigrette dressing, it is INCREDIBLE and I would buy it to have at home. You can, by the way. It comes by the quart. Our server (I don't remember her name) was so sweet and gracious with all of our questions! The eggplant etouffee was also delectable. Our family dined here this afternoon. The food was outstanding. We travel a lot and have eaten at five-star restaurants globally. This was by far one of our most memorable meals. The staff was extremely pleasant and friendly. Our waitress was one of the nicest people we've ever met. We enjoyed the popcorn crawfish for our appetizer. My wife and younger son had the shrimp platter. It was served with a wonderful corn dish, too. My older son and I hate the best enchiladas ever--these were stuffed with shrimp and crawfish and smothered in a creole sauce. The desserts are out of the world. Excellent southern meal which started with bread that should have been called little lumps of cheesy love -(biscuits). I had the smoked pork and grits and they were awesome. The pork was perfect. Good sweet chunks with the perfect amount of BBQ sauce. Not too goopy. It was topped with a crunchy veggie slaw. My honey had the eggplant pirogue which was different and just wonderful. My wife and I hosted a wedding rehearsal lunch at George's yesterday for our son and his fiancé. Our experience could not have been better. The food was great, the service was excellent, the location was ideal (wedding at the botanical gardens) and parking was convenient. Reggie and his staff were very attentive to every detail from early planning stage, menu choices and the lunch from champagne toasts, to salad, entree and desert. The food here is great; the experience had us shaking our heads. We arrived there at approximately 6:15 on a Saturday night and were told the wait would be about 40 min for a table which was fine with me because their menu looked divine. We sat down at their waiting area which has mini tables and bar service was available. About 20 minutes into our wait a female server said she would be taking care of us and asked if she could get us a drink. My assumption was that we would be sitting in her section, so she was offering to get us drinks before our table was ready. So we ordered two drinks and kept chatting. Then a male server came over with our drinks, water, and biscuits. He started telling us the specials of the day which confused me because the table we were at was tiny and we were told it was only bar service. So apparently he thought we would be eating there, but we said we would be willing to wait longer for an actual table. By 7:20 we received a table with a different server (much to my disappointment because the guy we had before was really nice and energetic). This server did his job sort of, he took our order and gave us our food. However, he never offered or asked if I would like another glass of wine and he also didn't offer us any dessert which I found to be very odd. This may seem like the long winded explanation of our experience but actually I left out some parts because I am tired of typing. Now lets get to the good part, the food! I ordered mussels and the shrimp and grits, both of these are technically appetizers. The mussels portion was huge and delicious. The shrimp and grits were the show stopper. It was a grit cake with creamy sauce and little shrimp with pieces of sausage. I would've licked my plate clean if that was appropriate. I highly suggest getting a reservation, which we tried to do but they didn't get our name down properly which is why we waited for so long. But overall you have to try this place, it is delicious. read more

We went here for the first time about a month ago and had a good experience. We returned for my birthday dinner and it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences ever. First of all it was a struggle to get a reservation as when my mother (who has a foreign accent, hmm) called they told her they were completely booked due to graduation. I called the next day hoping for a cancellation and got a table no problem. When we showed up the place was all but empty (3 other tables seated besides ours) and stayed that way through our way too short meal. When we mentioned what happened to the waiter at the end he said "oh yeah we had a lot of cancellations". Really? It's not like there were just a couple empty tables-the restaurant was practically empty. We ordered, got served and finished soup, salad, and dinner in less than 30 minutes-way too fast. The way the food tasted I had to wonder if it was all sitting under a warmer waiting. The soup and all the sauces were very thick and gummy, the biscuits bland, and the salad tasted like dirt. I was worried about this restaurant due to mediocre reviews. But I was thoroughly impressed after the meal. The cheesy biscuits are dry and not as good as Red Lobster, but they're not horrible with butter. The pimento cheese and fried okra appetizer is a nice way to start the meal. It's huge, really, so only order it if you can share with several people. The eggplant pirogue with crawfish etouffee was the highlight of dinner. It had the right balance of meat, spice, and eggplant. I highly recommend it or the etouffee alone. Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful. She made the dining experience very pleasant. The decor isn't much to praise, but the blue walls are calming. I hope to return here soon. It isn't the cheapest place, so I'll have to save up. read more
