Now here's a low country restaurant with a low profile. Located in a shopping area in a strip mall type building the owners created an inviting space to share a meal. Sunday brunch was fabulous. Great find by the girlfriend! We drove all day and was looking for someplace for dinner. The breading on the Fried Green Tomatoes and the shrimp was awesome. I was not impressed with George's. The cheddar biscuits were dry and more like bisquick than anything. The entrees were not good. I had the special, which was stuffed chicken - it had been recommended by our server. It was like chicken buried under red sauce, with mushrooms and ham food processed together for a really messy mush as the stuffing, which I had the pleasure of tasting for the next few hours, despite a hefty dose of heartburn meds. The other people with me had ok food - one mentioned the crab cakes were ok, but nothing to write home about. Service was ok, but food - not so much. read more

We went here on a Sunday morning (afternoon) for brunch, featuring $2 mimosas. They were tasty, but the waitress took an excruciating long time to bring them out as we ordered them. The grilled oysters were good, but not great. I felt that their freshness was a bit questionable, and my girlfriend said she did not feel well afterwards. The crawfish etouffee was pretty good, but highlights the bizarre mild cajun twist to their menu. They offer more traditional dishes like eggs benedict as well. They also have an interesting country fried bacon and eggs dish. I would definitely go back, if just for the cheap mimosas. read more

Excellent food. We had the eggplant covered in crawfish étouffée. It was Exceptional. I asked for rice because there was so much étouffée on it. They did not charge. Shrimp on grit cake was also great, although shrimp were a bit overlooked. The crab soup was a bit heavy on the sherry and salt, but still good. We will most definitely return. read more

Wow, I was not expecting to be blown away, but I was. Upon arrival we were promptly given our own carafe of water and served the most scrumptious basket of garlicky cheese biscuits I've just about ever had. The service on this busy Sunday was impeccable and my Crab Cakes & Eggs Benedict were served hot and delicious. Did I mention that the crab cakes had lots of real, tasty crabmeat? This dish also came with a side of country fried potato slices that would normally go untouched, but these were actually crispy, freshly made and good. My husband had the Crawfish Etouffee and he said it was as good as we've had in New Orleans! It's very unusual to find authentic Cajun and Creole restaurants in Georgia! I've always enjoyed coming to George's - nice atmosphere, good waitstaff, good food, no problem with substitutions - but this last visit was a bit disappointing. I ordered the crab cakes, and the consistency of the crab cakes was very mushy and homogenous, almost as though the mixture had been processed in a blender. In addition, the dry chardonnay I wanted was no longer available and the substitute they recommended was way too sweet, almost cloying. My bad - I should have sent it back - but I was surprised that the experienced server we had didn't seem to know her wines. read more

George's is basically Harry Bissett's that closed down a year ago. The owner and head chef use to cook for Bissett's for many years, so if you are a big fan of Bissett's and Cajun food, you are gonna love George's. I had the crab bisque which is almost exactly like they made at Bissett's, so I could eat a vat of it if they offered it; its' that good! I also had the short ribs which was amazing. They have a very nice bar with lots of tvs and a wide selection of liquor and wine. Patio area is very spacious and will be awesome when the weather warms up. Price is similar to Bissett's, maybe even a little bit cheaper. But you are talking steaks and seafood, so it's not going to be like eating at Applebee's. So, if you are missing the great food that was offered for many years at Harry Bissett's in Athens, then I would definitely recommend George's! read more

Tonight was the first time to visit this restaurant. Now I wonder why I waited so long. My brother and I were in the mood for seafood and we weren't disappointed. Our server Jermaine was very nice and helpful. To start I had sherry crab bisque and my brother had the gumbo.both were great. Our entrées me crab cake on tomatoes corn relish , my brother scallops on polenta with sauted spinach... seafood craving met and conquered..I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant..I know I will be returning..soon read more

I really wanted to like this place but our food just wasn't that good. We had the fried green tomatoes, which were good, I'd say 8/10. But my Jambalaya was awful. The clams weren't fresh, the fish was over cooked and there was one small piece of sausage in the dish. I'd give this dish a 2/10. My wife had the salmon dish which was good, not great. I went back for a birthday dinner. The service was much better this time. The portions where large. We ordered fried green tomatoes to start with for the table, and I was almost full from them. I then had the Eggplant Pirogue. So good and had enough left over for a meal the next day. Creme brulee was great and large too. Not as good as Five and 10's creme brulee, but still great. They've improved the service. Food is still tasty and worth the price. Go check it out for yourself. read more

Went on a Sunday night as a quick getaway. Ambience is casual with nice soft jazz playing in the background. We were seated at right next to the service station so it was fairly loud and active the entire time. Our server was obviously fairly new to service. I'll keep this brief. The restaurant earned 5 stars, but our server lacked attentiveness, and a pet peeve of mine, the proper steps of service. She brought our salads out before our appetizers, and for me that's a rookie mistake. Food was excellent and fresh. Fried green tomatoes were obviously breaded in house as was the okra. This wasn't your broad liners frozen product. Bread was slightly burnt on the bottom, but not inedible. Entrees were wonderful as well. We will certainly be returning. read more

After an Athens dinner search they had me at 'eggplant pirogue', one of my favorite Cajun dishes. Al the bartender makes a perfect martini, actually asking me how I'd like it made. I dined here for the first time last night with a friend/co-worker and ordered the grilled salmon. It was cooked perfectly and the accompanying sauce was amazing! The crispy onions were a treat, as I rarely eat fried foods. The quantity was perfect -- enough to satisfy the craving, but not so much that I felt guilty. Amazing food and specials. The flounder was amazing tonight along with the cobbler. The oysters are amazing, especially the pimento cheese grilled ones. The scallops with risotto are out of this world and the staff are as sweet as they come who will bend over backwards to make your experience top notch. Tuesday Oyster Night is great and so is the Prime rib date night special. Employees are treated with respect and want to make sure that your dinner is a great experience. Had an early (5:45PM) dinner with my wife last Saturday. The place was nearly empty, witch I credited to the early dinner hour. We ordered the crawfish popcorn for an app. It was cornmeal covered and not fresh by any means. My wife ordered the trout and I the fried chicken. The trout was quite a small fish, and adequate in taste. My fired chicken turned out to be what seemed like a previously frozen cornmeal breaded chicken cutlet. Not tasty. One glass of wine and one Bud Lite plus 20% tip = a bland meal for $75.00. read more

The food here is decent, not the best but definitely made with quality ingredients. We were surprised and happy to find that Bouillabaisse was offered as a special, as that is one of my favorite dishes and hard to find in Athens. Though I continue to return for convenience, there is something left to be desired in the decor, which comes across as pieced together and not as elegant as it could be. The food is also quite good but often seems a bit saltier and heavier than it needs to be. The service has always been good and we do enjoy going. read more

Great lunch today at George's with a friend. Our server was Lindsey and she was very accomodating, friendly and informative. We began with libations -- I had their HoundDog and my friend had a Bloody Mary. Both were delicious especially since Lindsey brought us some great homemade cheese biscuits to have with the drinks. We then had the Okra and Pimento Cheese appetizer with grilled oysters. The Okra with Pimento Cheese is a great combo. The oysters did not disappoint. Disappointed. I'm originally from Louisiana and can say this is not authentic. It's sad, because people who don't know better, may think they are getting authentic creole/Cajun food. Chargrilled oysters are very popular in New Orleans and if the chef at George's ever stepped foot in Louisiana and tried this dish they would realize they are over cooking it and serving it incorrectly (i.e., with horseradish and cocktail sauce which is severed with raw oysters). The chicken and andouille gumbo was more like a thick stew and not a gumbo. Was looking for a little taste of home, but I can make better dishes at home, than served here and can wait to visit Louisiana for the real thing. I will not return. read more

My daughter and I went to brunch on Saturday. It took 20 minutes for our server to come to the table and there were only 4 tables filled inside and a few on the outside patio. The space is nice, the house wine was good and then it was downhill after that. The cheddar biscuits were cold when they brought them out, the fried okra appetizer was really good , but the Pimento cheese was too sweet. Way too sweet. It seemed as if they might have taken a grocery store brand and thrown some grated cheddar into it. I would suggest getting Magnolia's cookbook from the restaurant in Charleston. Excellent pimento cheese. The ya ya gumbo was okay according to my daughter, nothing special and she is a gumbo expert. What we really wanted was oysters. Fried oysters. I should have asked about the size of them but honestly didn't even think about it....they were the biggest dang oysters I have ever tried to eat and CHEWY CHEWY CHEWY!!! They were fried nicely, but the oyster itself was inedible. I ate one and my daughter tried one. The server did not ask a thing about the oysters except...you want a to go box? We left half the gumbo, all the pimento cheese, half the okra and all but two of the dozen oysters. No need to get something terrible to go . No one asked us how our meal was. Needless to say, we won't be returning. Did have a lovely dinner meal elsewhere in Athens, but this place seriously needs a tune-up as far as customer service goes. We had fried oysters as an appetizer, and those were amazing. One of my favorite dishes, if well prepared is crawfish etouffee, and I thought George's was fabulous. The sherry crab bisque is really good, and I thought the shrimp and grit cake appetizer was quite good, too, but I would rather have a few more shrimp and a bit less sausage. The service was attentive both times, the food arrived in a timely manner, and the price was reasonable for the quality and presentation of the food. The restaurant was not close to capacity at either of my visits, however. While the restaurant is "nice" there is nothing particularly distinctive about the decor. read more
