The service wasn't great, but we did go on a Sunday afternoon. We waited only 20-30 minutes to get a table which was about what we expected. It's really small inside, but has an "at home" feel. So, after 3 years and 70+ reviews later, where is George's now? Better than ever, that's where. When we lived in Gloucester, this was our favorite coffee shop. Forget about the snootiness of Sugar Mags, or the fear factor of Two Sisters (those waitresses can be intimidating), George's had our heart. Having had breakfast there today for the first time since we had moved to NH in 2014, I felt compelled to update my review from over 8 years ago. George's has truly improved with age. Our favorite server Deirdre was still there, and she remembered us with a big hug and several visits with us during our stay. Our actual server Dee was great as well, and we saw several other servers there whom we had from past visits years ago, which says a lot about how well Dean treats his staff. We ordered a tremendous amount of food and took home 3 containers worth of leftovers. The seasonal special was cider donuts french toast, and it was exactly as good as it sounds. Their eggs florentine benedict was fantastic. Their home fries and hollandaise were better than what I remembered. The coffee was perfect diner joe and our cups were constantly filled. My wife ordered a pancake with her usual steak cheese omelette, and everything was just as delicious as our many breakfasts there before. My second day in Gloucester and we chose to go here based on the Yelp reviews. The food is really good and portions are huge. Our waitress was funny and attentive. But the parking sucks. I mean seriously sucks. And it's located on a blind curve so dropping off my elderly relative or getting out onto the road after breakfast is scary. Highly recommend. Everything from breakfast to dinner is an absolute hit. My favorite is the eggs Benny, a classic George's go to. But painfully slow. while waiting outside for an hour we were finally seated and we noticed two things. 1) the hostess was clearing tables to help keep things moving along as best as possible once people had eaten 2) The wait staff was very friendly and apologetic for the delays. What a pleasant surprise. Totally unsupposing from the outside - looks like a corner cafe in a non-descript area, but inside it is pleasant, clean and airy. Staff are friendly and helpful. We had breakfast here this morning. Opened at 5 on Saturday. Large portions are the norm. I had one pancake which was the size of a large dinner plate. I love real maple syrup so I paid $1.50 for it. Some food is so good it makes you want to cry (see Tacos Por Favor), most food is some where in the middle and then there is some food that sucks so bad....it makes you angry....George's will make anyone that knows what food is supposed to taste like, angry. The only way this "food" could of been worse is if I were unable get it down to start with...and it was very, very close to that. In the land of bland food, I only wished this crap was as bland as the bulk of the food I have had the misfortune of eating in recent days...I mean, if it were bland I could add salt or hot sauce but you can't take the bad flavor from this food. I would typically want to try a couple more things before slamming a place, but everything here was bogus and I saw the other people's food and I don't need to try anything else here. The place has a standard vibe of local and mediocre service, but that is fine. I ordered a cup of coffee that I took about two sips of and couldn't drink any more of. I would of rather taken old Yuban grinds and had someone piss in it. Top three of bad cups of coffee I have ever had. I then searched the menu and one of the specials was French Toast "stuffed" with cream cheese and strawberries. I have had a similar thing before and always enjoyed that ( most notably Martha's in Hermosa Beach, CA). The prices seemed reasonable and I ordered a full order and shortly afterwards a giant plate of French toast covered in whipped cream came out. It was immediately clear to me that NOTHING here is fresh and homemade. Frozen strawberries on a plate of whipped cream and several pieces of French toast smeared with some cream cheese. I realized after one bite that I picked the wrong thing and I looked around to see what others were eating and the hash browns are clearly the frozen patties you get at the grocery store...everywhere I looked was product that obviously was not cooked but clearly just thawed and heated. Bogus. Now I know some people might think that Big equals good but I beg to differ. I don't buy the statement of, "Yeah, the food isn't very good but the portions are big". I don't want a large portion of crap. Give me a reasonable portion of good food, made with good ingredients and actually cooked...properly. If it weren't for the fact there were customers in this place, I would say this place is a major candidate for Gordon Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares". As for the other Yelpers here that raved about this place, please cancel your accounts and stop misleading people, you clearly don't know what food is supposed to taste like. If you are headed to Gloucester and are seeking breakfast go to Zeke's or Morning Glory or better yet...make an omelet at home before you leave the house. As a local, I have frequented George's since the early 90's. Their quality is consistently superb, their costs are average and their portions are huge. You really get your money's worth. Hash & eggs - awesome flavor and hash to egg. Ratio Benedict's - the hollandaise sauce isn't too thick or too watery. Good lemon and butter balance. I actually order a side of this for my omlets. Omlet - I usually order spinach and asparagus no cheese. Fluffy eggs, fresh veggies perfectly cooked. All come with hash brown patties or home fries. Both are great but I don't order potato any more (not for last year or so) so a great substitute is raw or grilled tomato. My husband loves their breakfast wraps. They are huge, fluffy eggs, crunchy bacon and perfectly melted cheese. To quote him, they are phenomenol. The coffee is always fresh and pipping hot (dunkin who?). There can be a wait, even with their expansion. What can you expect for a great breakfast /lunch joint? The wait is worth it. NO credit cards but ATM is conveniently located inside. All I can say is: WOW! I over ate, ate things I would never eat but because they looked so good I had to jsut ruin my diet and go for it!!! The service was great. Our waitress was so patient with us and the staff made us feel like family. They had pumpkin pancakes on special and I couldnt resist getting one. When it got to the table it was bigger then the plate it came on...dinner size plate......It was amazing!!!!!! I almost ate the entire thing by myself....... I always judge a breakfast place by their omelettes . Most Places make their omelettes too small or so thin you can read a newspaper through them. Georges is gigantic filled with all your favorite goodies .the home fries are to die for. Most of all the staff are always happy and smiling and have been there for years which shows the owner is a great guy to work for. The menu is very standard, uninspiring, unoriginal (which is not always bad if done well). Ingredients mediocre. -Huevos Rancheros, for example, is eggs over tortilla chips with jarred salsa, jarred olives/peppers, sour cream and cheese. No fresh-cooked beans, no avocado. Essentially cooked scrambled eggs over packaged ingredients. -Home fries very salty. -Pancakes huge but bland. This review was put on hold for weeks, not wanting to negatively impact their rating. To be fair, diners should be warned. Perhaps such high reviews are for the warm atmosphere, sincerity of staff or the reviewers lack of perspective for quality. There is nothing warranting 4-5 stars food-wise. The Ugly Mug Diner in Salem is a fine counter-example to George's. Waited close to 30mins before the food came. When it came thought we were pleasantly surprised. Wife got the crab cake Benedict (with prefrozen hash browns) which was really good. Good portions too. Kids got the jumbo pancakes, which were ginormous, and the kids loved it. Waitress had no problem topping them off with more whipped cream. I just found my new breakfast place! Contrary to popular belief great breakfast places are hard to find here in Gloucester. George's is a hidden gem. You walk in and you seat yourself. Like a lot of restaurants in Gloucester the decor is very dated but don't let that throw you off. The food is delicious and the staff are very attentive and friendly. They have a saying that you won't leave hungry and they aren't kidding. The portions are vey generous. I ordered the 2 egg breakfast with hash browns, toast and a side of bacon. I also got the biscuits and gravy because that's what I was craving. My wife got the Mexican omelet and home fries. I ended up nibbling off her plate and let me tell you, the home fries are amazing! My food was delicious. I really have no complaints other than I probably ordered too much food. We were also able to try a half of a chocolate chip pancake. The cook (owner?) offered it up to us because they made an extra one by mistake. The pancake was awesome as well. Really the entire experience was above average and exceeded my expectations. The only drawback I can think of is parking isn't easy. I would suggest finding a side street to park on if you can. We'll definitely be back! read more
