I should have done this long ago! Maria's place is one of my favorite places to eat! Very reasonable prices, huge portions and friendly staff! Went in today and of course it was packed being Fathers Day- wall to wall people! Took a seat at the counter and was greeted right away! busy or not, they greet everyone! Watching the 4 cooks in that tiny space was super awesome! Like a fine oiled machine! I chose the kielbasa omelette and raisin toast- can't believe I finished it all! Lorie at the counter is awesome as always The ladies on staff kept their cool and kept it going with out missing a beat! I left full and happy! Their lunches are great as well! I had mid-morning breakfast here today after a long hiatus, which is due to so many competing restaurants between here and where I live in downtown Salem. My companion made quick work of the bacon and cheddar omelet, and I had a wonderful asparagus and cheddar omelet. My only nit to pick would be that the asparagus was diced too small and a bit hard to stab and grab with the fork, but it was fresh and perfectly cooked, and there was just the right amount of cheese. This place saved us on a Tuesday morning in October after a different Salem diner had made us wait but then sat a pair of local cops before us. At that other diner we took the hint and left. Maria's was the next place we drove past and we were absolutely starving. They sat us immediately and gave us a great diner experience. The staff were kind and straight to the point. Been coming here for years. Time to give it some love. I come here with friends, family, with only 2 but up to 8 in my party. I've always found a table quickly walking right in, or they've helped find one for the larger parties. The waitresses have all been nice and attentive, always got my order right, the food is great, portions ideal, and they don't push you out the door. I even get a thank you/goodbye from the cooks(maybe there's an owner in that group??) about half the time I walk out the door. Can't have enough of these type of spots, and hope Maria's just keeps going. read more

Good, solid breakfast joint with seasoned waitstaff to accommodate you. Omelets are good as is the coffee but breakfast is not memorable. Seasoned waitresses make this place by refilling coffee cups without asking and offering hot sauce, jam and whatever you need to go along with your meal. Returned and found that waitstaff on top of game and served hot coffee right away. Omelets are good but hash browns not fully cooked. If you want a quick meal try this place. Stopped in after noticing that Ihop was packed. First time here with my boyfriend, we were seated and asked if we wanted something to drink. We both got two medium sized orange juices. Probably the same size as ihop orange juices but a lot warmer. My boyfriend ordered French toast, 3 eggs scrambled with American cheese and home fries. He thought it was ok- mediocre. I got 1 pancake and 1 egg and 2 pieces of bacon. Apparently your meal automatically has to come with home fries and toast.. which okay I don't mind but that's not what I ordered and I was pretty sure they were going to charge us for it anyway.. my pancakes had no flavor at all.. yes they are big but not thick and are flavorless. The eggs had no flavor for me. Bacon was good. Toast was barely buttered and warm. I had a piece of tomato in my homefries.. random. My boyfriend saw the chef touching the toast with his bare hands. Lovely lol. Our total came to 30.00$ ... more than our average total at IHOP. It took forever for us to pay the bill since our waitress took so long to come back to our table. If I didn't give this place five stars I'm not sure I would be able to sleep at night. This place is tradition, been coming here for 12 years and have never once been disappointed. Menu has great options as they serve breakfast, lunch (not on Sunday), and their specials. Prices are very fair and I swear right after you place your order, the food is at your table within 2 minutes. My go to when I feel like being fat is the 3 chocolate chip pancakes. Massive pancakes and one heck of a challenge in finishing it. Maria's will always have my heart, one of my first true loves. read more

I visit Maria's a lot with my friends. It is the best place to have a fast breakfast! We always joke that you blink your eyes after ordering and already have your food. Both the open kitchen and wait staff welcome you in and out of the restaurant. It can feel a little rushed but I'm always looking for a quick meal. The pancakes are big enough to share. Updated review.. Went there on the July 4th weekend. Granted it was very busy but they've been busy before. This day they had plenty of help but I must say,this visit was horrible from the moment I stepped into the joint. The first bad thing I saw was no one came to take our order for at least 10 minutes..and then the order taker was rude..harassed ..told me to hurry up with my order as they were packed ands she was very busy. Okay I said..the plates of food were packed up at the counter waiting to be delivered..there was yelling orders up and total confusion. My food took thirty three minutes to be cooked and 10 minutes writing on the counter. The food arrived cool..not hot. The eggs were dried out and I could go on. I used to live this place and they're specials and did normally good. But they're expensive and cheap..they charge an extra quarter for English Muffins and for sausage potatoes another quarter..give this place a long ready and try the other joints in the area before this place. read more

One of the best breakfasts I've ever had. We're visiting from Oregon, and one of my friends from Florida, so we didn't really know what to expect with the food. I was unbelievably impressed. I'm one of those people that likes their scrambled eggs cooked lightly, which is difficult to get at a restaurant, but these were perfect! Salem has around 64 places to find food (including 14 "Dunkies" and 1 Starbuck) but dollar for dollar there is NONE better than Maria's place. We would love it if Mario would some day open a branch in Marblehead but in the interim it is well worth the trip. Family outings to Maria's are frequent occurance to the point where the wait staff now ask our grandson on arrival "Max, the usual?". Being the elder of the clan I usually on weekends opt for the excellent eggs Benedict special while the women in the group are known to order up a custom omellette or either the "Texas" french toast or a stack of the just sweet enough and mega-filling pancakes. NOBODY leaves here hungry. As described by other posters the service here is consistent, friendly and fast - and the frequent coffee re-fills just what the doctor ordered. Food quality and quantity both are phenomenal - have a late breakfast here and you will easily be able to "blow off" lunch (and possibly dinner too). Maria's is best know for their breakfast. There are generally two types of people in Salem: those who go to Red's, or those who go to Maria's. I prefer Red's for my favorite, Belgian waffle, hot chocolate, and home fries. However, Maria's makes a good apple pancake, which I just fell in love with. They also do lunch, with items like pasta and sandwiches. For lunch, I like their chicken & olive quesadilla. The prices are very reasonable and portions are big. read more

Service was very bad, had two waitresses since they were unable to be timely for ordering, and it got slower once there were two. they were probably assuming the other one took care of us. they were nice, but what is nice when you have to wait a long time to order drinks, I received my drinks and my friend didn't get hers until 10 min later. when I ordered Texas French toast, they brought out (in my picture). when I finally complained after probably 20 minutes of receiving the food, that 1 it wasn't cooked, very soggy and wet, and 2 it wasn't Texas French toast, they said that IS their version of Texas French toast and their regular is on small wonder bread. wow. too much Canadian Ham on my sandwich which, its usually a better thing to have too much than not enough so eh. they never asked us how our meal was. immediately after getting the food i wanted to get a new french toast order as well as a new drink but was unable to since the waitresses were preoccupied with whatever they were doing (restaurant was about 1/3 full or less). friend referred to come here probably since the better places we're packed, but I'd rather wait while starving for good food than to still have to wait for "eh I'd rather pass" food. read more

Admittedly I haven't been here in years, hopefully it hasn't changed. I used to love it though. I highly recommend their French toast. Everything they have is perfectly done. There's really nothing else special about this place, you wouldn't spot it if you didn't know it was there or weren't looking for somewhere to eat. It's in a plaza with a convince store and a few other places, a little down the street from the police station. There's nothing special about this place aside from the fact that they have damn good food. For some reason Red's seems to be the most popular breakfast restaurant in Salem, but Maria's food is far better. If there are two type's of people in Salem, I guess I fall into the other category. read more

After reading all the fanfare on yelp my family decided to give Maria's a try. We went on a Saturday morning and the place was packed. I was hoping this would be a good indication of wonderful food. It wasn't. We ordered our breakfast staple of eggs, bacon and toast for me, a pancake for our son and French toast for my husband. We all agreed the food was just okay. Nothing spectacular. Sitting in the quaint, carpeted, large, open room, we took a table for two and were greeted by a waitress with a pleasant accent within minutes. We ordered drinks which were set down rather quickly and ordered hungry man specials... big mistake for me as I didn't touch half of it... good thing they had boxes. Literally the gem of the Northshore diner scene. My mom and I are somewhat diner snobs, and we've been to our fair share of them but nothing compares to Maria's. As Salem residents we're regulars here, for over ten years we've been coming in every Sunday or Saturday or any day off from school. This place is thee perfect breakfast spot. Just left Maria's. was short changed. Gave the counter waitress a $20.00 bill. When she returned, she gave me change for a $10.00 not a $20.00. I told that . They say that this local restaurant is well known for it's breakfasts. So we finally succumbed to the local chatter and tried it....its just OK. Our usual fare of 2 over easy, bacon, fries and hash well...just ok. Eggs were done to our liking, bacon salty and too well done and home fries dry. Hash..best left in the kitchen. Coffee. was very good and truly a bottomless cup. Best part of our experience was our waitress....fast, very friendly and always there to refill our cup-pa (as they say in Australia). My mom, sister, my sisters boyfriend and I went there for an early Valentines Day brunch today and I got the hungry man special. Seeing that it was only $8.58 I thought I wouldn't be getting much. First came a plate with two huge pancakes which were a little on the burnt side. I didn't mind and then another large plate of eggs, toast, sausage, bacon, and home fries. I was almost done with my pancakes when the waitress came over with another plate of large pancakes and explained that the cook felt bad for serving me burnt pancakes and gave me new ones or free. I have been to many food places like Maria's Place but none have compared in service, prices, and quality of food. I plan on taking my girlfriend there for lunch for our three year anniversary this summer. read more
