I was craving some tamales today. The topic came up while I was getting a haircut at the barbershop. Resulting from the conversation - I asked if anyone knew a source for good tamales and one of the barbers recommended the ones his mom makes. Well - I bet those are good - and I did (for the record) request a notification from him when his mom makes the next batch so that I can make a purchase! That being said / I'm still wanting a good tamale. I decided to go to George's because they offer fantastic desserts made just like the ones my mom, grandmothers and aunts all make. I thought they may also have tamales! Well what do you know - they do offer both! I ordered and promptly disposed of the tamale spread (as it's called on the menu)! It was delicious - several meaty tamales covered in a homemade chili sauce with cheese and a generous helping of chopped onion (optional for others - but not for me). The tamale spread was awesome! I had ordered a piece of chocolate cake for my appetizer (not unusual for me). I finished that piece of cake after I finished the tamale spread. I washed all this down with some splashes of Louisiana Hot Sauce on the tamale spread and a large glass of ice water that was generously refilled by the fantastic server, Heather! I recommend this dish and the dessert and will definitely repeat! I, of course, always appreciate the clean and friendly setting and reasonable prices! Bon appetite! read more

Always a warm welcome when walking in from the staff; seating is never packed either. Food is phenomenal; burgers and fries are hard to miss here. OMG, the fries! Today was our first time at George's Restaurant, and we couldn't be happier! I had a delicious cheeseburger made from fresh meat and my wife had a steak sandwich. Both were super tasty.... and presented to our table covered in a huge pile of fries. So many fries that you are provided an extra plate for the overflow. And these are amazingly good handcut fries. There is one waitress that is always the sweetest every time we visit and unfortunately I can't ever think to ask her name but she has been with the restaurant for as long as I can remember not to mention several others that work here as well. First to start the staff are so friendly and attentive to everyone. Now to the food ...the fries they serve are more than enough for two people to share and can be a bit much and wasteful. It was in a bit of disarray: there wasn't a host to show you to your seat; they didn't give a ticket after the meal, so we were a bit confused as to what we were supposed to do; there were crowds of people standing around the restaurant waiting to be seated, because there was no host. The atmosphere was just too busy to be relaxing. The food itself was alright, but it wasn't great. The prices on the food were somewhat unreasonable; the cost was just too much for what you get. The man - who I assume was the manager or store owner - was doing a great job at keeping things moving. The waitress was nice, and the food came out fairly quickly. My family and I stopped by George's on the way to a rodeo. Yep, you read that right, we were actually going to a rodeo. Seriously, what were we thinking? It was around 5 of 5:30 so it was an odd time for dinner. We figured that we would be the only people eating at that time. It turned out that two more tables were being used when we got there and by the time we left there were 6 tables that were occupied. It was weird to see but despite the abundance of staff and the few customers, all the waitresses seemed to be running their butts off. We didn't have to wait a long time to get served but when we asked for a side order of ranch dressing the waitress never brought it. It was like she was too busy to remember. Again, she was running all around the place and we couldn't really figure out why. Everyone at our table ordered some kind of burger and fries. I ordered a chili cheeseburger (it was my "cheat day") and fries. When they brought out the plates it looked like just a mountain of fries. The plates were double stacked so you could use one of them to pile your fries on while you tunneled down to find your burger and this is exactly what I did. Once I got down to the burger, that is when George's started losing stars. Technically it was a burger. There was ground beef and two slices of bread. Technically it was a chili burger because there was chili on the meat paddy. Technically I got what I asked for. However... The burger was served open face style. That means there was some assembly required. The bottom of the bun lay on one side and the top of the bun lay on the other. The patty with the chili on top lay on the top of the bun. That meant if I wanted this to look like an actual burger then I would have to flip over the half with the chili on it. Or I could put the bottom of the bun onto the top half and eat it upside down. That's what I did, and it just seemed weird. I could have flipped the top over onto the bottom without worry of slinging chili everywhere. The dollop that was on there would not have made too big of a mess if it had slung off during the transfer. That brings up my next point. The four or five pounds of fries that came with each burger seemed to be there simple to distract you from the fact that the burgers were tiny. I didn't weigh it but I bet it couldn't have been 2 1/2 or 3 ounces of meat (and that included what was in the chili). Now let's talk about taste. Trust me, this will be a short conversation. It was bland. The burger was bland. The chili was bland. The fries were bland. Although, the fries might have been better if I could have gotten that cup of ranch dressing that I asked for. I know people rave about George's but I just don't get it and I probably won't be back. read more

Food was good, not as good as it was, the bacon cheese burger just had some pre-packed, pre-cook bacon instead of the nice thick bacon the menu says that's on there, and the jalapeño burger had jalapeños out a jar instead of fresh jalapeños.... but none of this is why the poor review.....they have made the decision to use this COVID crisis as an excuse to treat customers badly, my wife had a really thick coat with the collar that zipped up over her nose and mouth, and they literally made fun of her and treated her like she was stupid, I wish I had just left then....and I should have read more

So very disappointing. I really failed to see the point of the glowing reviews (family/friends, maybe?). My daughter and I went there expecting to be wowed and were anything but. The server was friendly enough when we first arrived but..... When the cheeseburgers and fries we ordered came to the table, I was struck with how messy it was. The presentation leaves much to be desired. The top bun was left off of the cheeseburger (it was pushed aside) and there was a mountain of unseasoned, lukewarm (stale?) fries smothering the patty. Removing those removed the cheese off of the burger. The server never came back to the table to refill our drinks nor did she bring the check to the table. After waiting quite some time at the register, someone finally showed up, tracked down the server and got our check. This was a total bust. Obviously, we'll never be back. George's never disappoints. It's your typical homegrown place that you find in every town, and that's not a bad thing! I've been a few times and tried a few different things and everything has been good. Today, I had the grilled chicken wrap and substituted fries instead of chips. This was an up charge and totally worth it. The amount of fries that comes with each plate is crazy! I wonder how many potatoes this place goes through each day. The service was wonderful as well. My only complaint is that I'm always too full to order dessert. They always look SO good in the refrigerator by the register. Not a better burger restaurant in the city. Older, local, regulars as the typical clientele, you get an enormous amount of food for solid prices (double cheeseburger and fries for $7-8). This is more "butcher-style" patties because they make the patties from fresh ground chuck right before cooking them on a griddle. Since each patty is thin, they get charred crispy edges which make it even more delicious. read more

Everyone seems to love George's. We lived here several years before a native introduced us to this fun and truly "local" place. I think everyone eating at the standing room only packed lunch place knew each other. It's close enough to downtown that the "suits" were there with everyone else. Burgers are great. Enough fries on one plate for 3 trying not to stuff themselves. My favorite is the hamburger steak. Salads are plain but good dressings. Homemade desserts are tempting. There are three important things for any restaurant and those are food, service and cleaniness. George knocked it out of the park on all three. The food was delicious. It's simple, fresh and tasty. It reminded me a lot of good old diners back home near Chicago. The portions were good sized and nothing tasted bland. The service was excellent as well. Even though the place was jammed packed I never felt ignored. I would say they could probably use one more waistress when the place is full, but maybe someone called in that day. Who knows? The place was spotless. That always makes me happy. No one wants to eat in a dirty place. My ONLY complaint was how many tables they jammed into the space. I know more seats equal more money, but it was hard to nagivate around the crammed tables. read more
