We recently went to George's Steak & Things after seeing it listed as one of the top cheesesteak spots in the area. Since it was one we hadn't tried yet, we happily made the 30-minute drive. We ordered the steak and cheese sub, Cajun chicken sub, and the meatball sub. The shop is located near George Mason University and is clearly well loved. The space was clean, welcoming, and the staff was very nice--which honestly made me really want to love the food. That said, it just wasn't what I was expecting. Everything leaned a bit dry and bland for my taste. However, I will say that after reheating it the next day, it actually tasted better, which makes me think the real test is eating it fresh and hot in-house. Brightly lit dining area with booths and high-top seating. Great combo price on cheesesteak w/ fries. Add your soda and it's still not bad. Had to compliment the owner on his old school music which made my dine-in at this spot with a "neighborhood gem" vibe enjoyable. Sub came with a decent amount of well-seasoned steak (unlike a lot of places!) on a toasted bun with no up-charge for mushrooms. We had read that they had one of the best steak & cheeses around, and I wholeheartedly disagree, as it's super bland and they skimp on the filling. The gyros use pre-cut slices and are not shaved from a spit. Oh, and avoid the pasta dishes, as they are reheated in the microwave. Super gross. I've first visited George's back in my college days, a over decade ago. The owners back then were extremely friendly, and it's where I first tried baklava. Fast forward to today and they still uphold in customer service. On a hunt to find a steak and cheese that's comparable to a Philly cheese steak or nostalgic DC carry out steak and cheese or fried fish sub, this would do. A hidden gem! This place offers a variety of sandwiches. I came here with my uncle, who's really hard to take to restaurants given that my aunt (his wife) is a chef. I'm more used to my cheesesteaks being filled to the brim with meat if I'm forking over $10-12 dollars. Maybe if I was a Fairfax Station local and have not tried many places, I'd rate this one higher, but unfortunately, I've tried them all. I tried the waffle fries for the first time today, worth the calories. They were crispy and had a nice seasoning on them. Wonderful!
