My friends and I stopped by for a quick morning coffee. I went with a banana pudding latte which was pretty good but I wish the banana flavor was stronger. My wife frequents the Ballywhack Shack, so after the kids' swim meet we figured it'd be a quick, familiar brunch stop. I'd ordered from here before and knew the breakfast burrito was a solid go-to, but this was my first time walking in. From the moment I stepped inside, I felt invisible. I stood at the pickup counter for a couple of minutes while the staff behind it made eye contact and said nothing. I walked over to the register, where the owner - an older woman who appeared to be the proprietor, was wrapping up a warm, friendly chat with the couple ahead of me. When I stepped up and offered a cheerful "Hello," her entire demeanor shifted. The warmth evaporated. I explained I was there for a pickup order and was curtly redirected back to the pickup counter. I mentioned I'd also like to add a drip coffee - same answer, same dismissive gesture toward the counter I'd already been standing at, unacknowledged, moments before. Back at the pickup counter, I waited again until someone finally asked if I was picking up. I confirmed and added the coffee request. After checking out, and yes, leaving a tip despite the cold reception, I was told they were out of drip coffee at 11:45 AM and it'd be another five minutes. I passed and asked for a refund. I've heard from neighbors and other reviews that this place is warm and welcoming. That was not my experience. After the interaction at the register, I honestly considered walking away from the order entirely. No one should leave a restaurant feeling like a second-class citizen. read more

My husband purchased the Virgina Cafe Passport for me for my birthday, and that's how we discovered Ballywhack and the adorable river town of Occoquan. Our sandwiches were fresh and filling and we each ordered a different latte, which wasn't easy because they have many different flavors. It's enticing us to return so we can keep trying their coffee AND food menu. There is a little indoor seating and outdoor seating along the rail of the covered porch. The indoor seats by the window are definitely prime territory. I highly recommend walking around the town and on the riverwalk, visiting the park by the old mill, and stopping into the local shops either after your coffee or with your to go mug in hand. read more

We usually go to the Golden Plum to get pies and only just noticed the Cafe next door. Glad we made an effort to stop here first for lunch as they serve great sandwiches, drinks and coffees here. I lucked on this place on my road trip and it was perfect serendipity. I needed to pick up something for a potluck, and the bakery next door has delicious cookies. We were looking for a breakfast place in the area and this was one of the places that pop up. Upon entering it seem to be very cozy place. We were not greeted but I still walked up to the counter to get us the menu. My husband and I stopped in recently, and our experience was pretty disappointing. He ordered the Down The Shore and an Iced Dirty Soda (Italian Soda). To him it tasted like flat soda, and to me it tasted more like sparkling water -- definitely not what we expected. I ordered the creamy tomato soup and a grilled cheese, and both were a miss. The soup wasn't hot or creamy, and the sandwich bread was hard, even when I dipped it into the soup. I took two bites and threw it out. I also tried the Dirty Soda Mango-Hibiscus -- it tasted better than it looked, but still not great. Didn't really know that this place existed until I drove by one day. I thought it was still a general store but now I am glad I gave it a shot. We've been about 4 times over the past few weeks and anything we ordered was a hit. My fiancé got the Twister Sister each time because she loves it that much and I can't say I blame her. I've tried the Bada Bing Bada Boom, Chunky Dunk, Meanwhile...Back at the Ranch, and the South-By-Southwest wrap. Each one was delicious, you can't really go wrong with anything. We also like the lattes here as well. Lots of unique flavors that are absolutely worth trying as well. We've liked the lavender one the most. The staff is pretty friendly and they work hard and fast behind that counter too. The cafe doesn't have too much seating but there is also some outside. Honestly I thought this was a nice cool place to relax and have breakfast. I had been here before but this time I ordered a mocha. It was brought to my table. A few minutes later my number was called and I had another drink made. Me being honest I said I already had one but if they wanted to give it to me. I wasn't expecting a yes the lady went to the manager/owner she kind of eyed me and was like no. And that she would drink it instead of dumping it out. As a customer service manager the least she could have done is got up thanked me and said "I'm sorry we can't" not sure if I want to come back but that just didn't seem like a good way to handle it. read more

Loved my sandwich! I got the Bacon Me Crazy with a side of macaroni salad. The bacon was plentiful and had a nice smokey flavor. The ciabatta bread was toasted the right amount with butter that added to the sandwich. The aioli sauce was a touch sweet in a good way and was the perfect finishing touch! Yum! Great food and lattes. I've had the apple pie latte previously back in the fall, which prompted me to come back again today. I knew they didn't have the apple pie latte, so I asked the associate if there was any seasonal flavors or recommendations she had. She suggested the campfire latte, which is the best choice for a dreary day. I also ordered the Bada Bing Bada Boom without peppers, which is a very well put together sandwich. You can tell by the taste that the ingredients are fresh. Great service as well. The brownie points for me writing this review is that the owner said a appreciation comment about law enforcement and it made me happy hearing this comment considering I am a wife of an officer.
