Ballywhack Shack Cafe is such a cozy little gem. My Husband and I had the turkey pressed sandwich #1. On the menu, with tomato soup of the day and it was absolutely delicious. The turkey was fresh and flavorful, the cheese was perfectly melted, and the bread was toasted just right. That pesto and rosemary hits the spot. The tomato soup was warm, rich, and comforting and so full of flavor and the perfect pairing for the sandwich. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a great spot to relax and actually enjoy your meal. Add in a great cup of coffee and the southern peach sweet tea was so delicious. it's the ultimate comfort-food experience. My friends and I stopped by for a quick morning coffee. I went with a banana pudding latte which was pretty good but I wish the banana flavor was stronger. My husband purchased the Virgina Cafe Passport for me for my birthday, and that's how we discovered Ballywhack and the adorable river town of Occoquan. Our sandwiches were fresh and filling and we each ordered a different latte, which wasn't easy because they have many different flavors. It's enticing us to return so we can keep trying their coffee AND food menu. There is a little indoor seating and outdoor seating along the rail of the covered porch. The indoor seats by the window are definitely prime territory. I highly recommend walking around the town and on the riverwalk, visiting the park by the old mill, and stopping into the local shops either after your coffee or with your to go mug in hand. read more

We usually go to the Golden Plum to get pies and only just noticed the Cafe next door. Glad we made an effort to stop here first for lunch as they serve great sandwiches, drinks and coffees here. I lucked on this place on my road trip and it was perfect serendipity. I needed to pick up something for a potluck, and the bakery next door has delicious cookies. I needed breakfast and Ballywhack has the best burrito ever. I almost told them not to put the sweet potatoes in it, because I'm not a huge fan of those. We were not greeted but I still walked up to the counter to get us the menu. My husband and I stopped in recently, and our experience was pretty disappointing. He ordered the Down The Shore and an Iced Dirty Soda (Italian Soda). To him it tasted like flat soda, and to me it tasted more like sparkling water -- definitely not what we expected. I ordered the creamy tomato soup and a grilled cheese, and both were a miss. The soup wasn't hot or creamy, and the sandwich bread was hard, even when I dipped it into the soup. I took two bites and threw it out. I also tried the Dirty Soda Mango-Hibiscus -- it tasted better than it looked, but still not great. Honestly I thought this was a nice cool place to relax and have breakfast. I had been here before but this time I ordered a mocha. It was brought to my table. A few minutes later my number was called and I had another drink made. Me being honest I said I already had one but if they wanted to give it to me. I wasn't expecting a yes the lady went to the manager/owner she kind of eyed me and was like no. And that she would drink it instead of dumping it out. As a customer service manager the least she could have done is got up thanked me and said "I'm sorry we can't" not sure if I want to come back but that just didn't seem like a good way to handle it. read more

The ciabatta bread was toasted the right amount with butter that added to the sandwich. The aioli sauce was a touch sweet in a good way and was the perfect finishing touch! Yum! I'm usually meh about restaurant potato salad but always have high hopes. I also added the Red Pepper ans Smoked Gouda Soup. Hubby choice on that one as I'm not a Pepper fan. Great food and lattes. I've had the apple pie latte previously back in the fall, which prompted me to come back again today. I knew they didn't have the apple pie latte, so I asked the associate if there was any seasonal flavors or recommendations she had. She suggested the campfire latte, which is the best choice for a dreary day. I also ordered the Bada Bing Bada Boom without peppers, which is a very well put together sandwich. You can tell by the taste that the ingredients are fresh. Great service as well. The brownie points for me writing this review is that the owner said a appreciation comment about law enforcement and it made me happy hearing this comment considering I am a wife of an officer. The service was very slow and I really got tired of hearing the young man behind the counter that seemed to be the only one cooking yelling at the other 3-4 staff just standing around... and then yelling out order numbers to be picked up. He started getting annoyed when orders weren't getting picked up, and finally one of the staff came inside and yelled back that customers sitting outside don't know their orders are ready because the speakers outside weren't working. The place wasn't slammed, but I do know they take online orders and there was a steady flow of customers coming in for pick-ups. 20+ minutes later I see one of the staff that was just standing around start making one of our cold cut sandwiches and another 5 minutes later our entire order was ready. Unfortunately, my sides were incorrect but I didn't notice until we started driving away. The sandwiches we ordered were delicious, generous sizes, and packed well for to-go, but not worth the wait for next time. My iced latte could have been better but wasn't iced cold and instead room temperature. The Italian sodas weren't good, but honestly probably just not our thing. I was expecting more of a bubbly slightly sweet soda, but tasted more bitter club soda and there wasn't enough ice to keep them cold. read more
