Hubs took me here for my birthday. Maybe I haven't tried that many cupcakes places, but this is by far the best I've tasted. I think it's because of the icing... yeah I think it's because of the icing. Light and frothy and not too sweet (except for the peanut butter frosting... i think that was a little heavy) Anyways, today we got the red velvet, the lava fudge, the chocolate birthday and the strawberry. All of which had light frothy frosting. Although I do agree that the portion of the cupcake is quite smaller than other ones I've had. I think it was quite enough. I usually am unable to finish a big cupcake because I get over the sweet tooth real fast or I'm just full. But I like the size of these cupcakes. In any case, the red velvet cupcake is soft and moist and goes very well with the cream cheese icing. The lava fudge surprised me because even though I know there was a fudge filling, I didn't expect it to be quite gooey and delicious! So I think I may have a fave number two! (Before, I was all about the red velvet). The chocolate birthday cupcake was nothing out of the ordinary. I wasn't a huge fan of the vanilla buttercream frosting, but hey, people do need variety. You need to understand that this place is busy (it has its own show people). Long lines and such need to be expected. Just relax, take a deep breathe and wait in line. It moves quick... If you have no patience in life...DO NOT GO HERE. Go to Safeway or Shoppers to get your cupcakes. They will suit you better anyway. The cupcakes in Georgetown Cupcakes taste really good. They're moist (uncomfortable word) and the icing isn't hard like most cupcake places. If its your first time and your stuck with indecision, just get a red velvet. Mmm hmmm. I have been over the cupcake scene for quite a while now. I didn't hate it like some people because it's just a piece of cake in a different shape. But I have now reentered!! Before going in, a kind gentleman told us about the cupcake of the day which you find out via Twitter. They make about 100 of these each day but it's 100% free!! Today's was the Chocolate Ganache Surprise and oh boy was there a surprise. It was a chocolate cake with a thin layer of chocolate ganache on top and the surprise was lard. Delicious lard. At least that's what it looked like. One of the two seasonal cupcakes was a Cherry Blossom which is a misleading name. I thought of a fragrant flower and did not feel like eating perfume. But I asked and found out that it's vanilla cake with fresh cherries and cherry flavored frosting!! Unlike the thin layer of ganache, this was your typical 1" thick layer of frosting. The cherry was subtle in the frosting but the chunks in the cake reminded me of a childhood favorite, a preserved fruit cake (soft not that brick) my mom used to make. Go to Bethesda. I had heard all this talk about lines down the street at the Georgetown location -- I walked in here this afternoon at around 12:30 and there was one person ahead of me. My total time in the shop was around 3 minutes. Enough logistics: the cupcakes. My two cents: the cake is infinitely better than the frosting. The cake is nearly perfect- light, airy, moist, sweet, hints of vanilla. But the frosting is dense, overly sweet (I'm normally an originalist when it comes to cupcakes - yellow cake, chocolate frosting - this frosting was so sweet and heavy that I scraped half of it off. I also ordered yellow cake, vanilla frosting, and the vanilla frosting is far less jarringly sweet). I haven't made it to Baked & WIred yet so I can't contribute to the huge Yelp debate on which is better- these are good cupcakes, though. I'm not sure they'd warrant a trip to Bethesda (or Georgetown), but if I were in the area, I'd certainly buy some. read more

This place is tiny. But, I don't live in Bethesda, so I'm usually just popping in to grab a cupcake after lunch with my hubby or when I drop him off at work and really need a cupcake. Plus, I have a tendency to go to town on my cupcakes - and that's clearly something I should do while not in the company of strangers. The mint cookies and cream cupcake is super yummy. The cake is moist and tastes/looks like cookies and cream. The mint cookies and cream frosting is just delicious. Light, but flavorful. The chocolate^2 cupcake is a whole different story. There is nothing light about it. But it is so perfectly chocolatey. The cake is super moist chocolate cake. The frosting is a rich, creamy, delicious, thick chocolate ganache. And they pile it on. I've been to this location now a few times to get a cupcake or two with a friend, and also to pick up a dozen cupcakes for a baby shower. Everything who has helped me out here has been nice and friendly, and the location has never been too crowded (although the parking can be a little tough to run in quickly). The cupcakes are a bit expensive, but there are lots of exciting flavors to chose from. Some of the cupcakes run a bit sweet or a bit dry for my taste, but some of have been really excellent (and I'm not a cupcake person at all). When I ordered the cupcakes for the baby shower, the process was fast and easy, and my order was correct and on time! While expensive, everybody loved them and I had no complaints. Like others said, the place is pretty small- I'd just plan on taking your cupcake to go and eating it out and about in Bethesda! read more

I just moved out of my condo under a rock and found out that there was a show about this place (well the one in G-town). I was walking out of the Apple Store and passed this place and said to myself, "wow, there's no line. I hear this place (or at least the one in G-town) has a line of minions who swear that these cupcakes (and Snapples) are made from the best stuff on Earth. I should seize the moment and try one. I only had five bucks so I thought I'd get three or four. (Someone out there is laughing at my naivete.) Apparently the price of flour is high on Planet Cupcake: $2.75 for ONE. And...they're like "normal" sized cupcakes. Not even "Food Network" sized cupcakes. I found some change in my pocket and scraped together enough for two, Red Velvet and Vanilla & Chocolate. The cupcake was okay. The frosting was good although the cupcake was a little dry. It wasn't bad. I would've given it three stars, but I don't want to mislead someone into thinking that their 2 hours in line will be rewarded with a "come to Jesus" moment. They aren't horrible. They aren't great. You can NEVER go wrong here. I am a super healthy eater and always eat clean homemade meals. However, when I feel like being naughty I walk on over to GT Cupcake to indulge in a super cute yummy little sweet. Cupcakes are my favorite and I consider them to be the best cheat meal ever. Especially from GT Cupcake, where you can even get a "somewhat" healthy cupcake. They even have vegan cupcakes (so good)! I thought this place was great. I was stomping through the icky snow that four hundred people have trampled with mother and my boyfriend, both of whom were in less-than-joyous moods. And then we all caught sight of all those pink boxes. Which, in case you haven't guessed, had CUPCAKES in them. And there were CUPCAKES on little trays, and standing outside in the yucky slushy gray mess and looking in at all that sugary goodness certainly made MY mouth water. So we went inside, and there were SO MANY options that it took us FOREVER and EVER to decide which cupcakes to get. I got the LAVA FUDGE one. And if you ever go in there, I highly suggest that one, because that one is JOY. Get a napkin though. It has the potential to be a tad messy. My only complaint is trivial: because so many people had come in with snowy boots on, the floor was a little wet and slippery. But who cares about slippery floors when you have cupcakes?!? Whenever I walk past Georgetown Cupcake, there's always a long line going out the door and my laziness kept me from trying it. I went on a Sunday afternoon and the line was fairly short, so I decided to give it a try. At first glance the shop is very cute and cozy. Very nice presentation of the cupcakes and the staff is friendly. I got the red velvet cupcake and my boyfriend got the chocolate & vanilla. To start off, the icing was yummy! The cake itself was moist and it really was one of the best cupcakes I've ever had. The red velvet cupcake is a must try! Their cupcakes are really good. Moist, flavorful, and consistent. They have lots of varieties of flavors and they have a daily "secret" cupcake that they advertise each morning on twitter, with 100 available in each of their locations. If you're one of the first 100 folks to ask for one by name, free cupcake! Score! The cupcakes are expensive, but they are good, and so I don't mind the cost for an occasional treat. I do, however, have to take off a star for the store's physical plant. There is almost no space to sit down and there is often a line out the door due to the tiny location. Believe it or not, I'm going to bump my stars for Georgetown Cupcake after they got our order wrong for a birthday party. We ordered a certain color frosting and when we went to pick up 90 minutes before the party, cupcakes were standard chocolate and vanilla, not the color we asked for. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Georgetown Cupcake rarely has to deal with problems with orders because they run a tight ship and a great business. So the manager first said "they didn't understand where the discrepancy was" because the guy that took the order basically never misses a detail. Which I believe is certainly the case. When my wife - 90 minutes from the start of the party and 20 minutes from the venue --explained that the discrepancy was clearly that the employee, while it may be rare, missed the frosting color on the order sheet, because, while her husband (me) can't even remember (.... I'll let you fill in this blank), she remembers everything, particularly the conversation she had with the order guy about why they couldn't do a certain color she wanted, so she would have to just get this one color -- all while probably bursting capillaries in her eyeballs at this guy (I really wish I had been there to see this), the manager really did a professional job managing the situation. They remade (they said they would fix them with new frosting, but I think it might have just been a re-do) in 30 minutes. They looked great, they tasted great. Other than the initial dodge (which I'm giving them the benefit of saying they're just not used to dealing with these problems), the situation was handled perfectly, with absolute professional, satisfactory resolution. So I caved. I've been wondering why there is always a line out side of the Georgetown Cupcake in Georgetown. I mean could a $3 cupcake really be worth it. My favorite cakes are from Giant and you can get 6 cupcakes for $3. Seriously, I love Giant cake. When I get married the cake will come from Giant. But back to the matter at hand. Since they opened the outpost in Bethesda, I figured I'd go, to see what all the fuss was about. Fortunately there is never a line at the Bethesda shop and now I know why. It wasn't the worst cupcake I've ever had but it most definitely was not the best. The cupcake was really dense and there was equal amounts of icing and cake. There should probably be more cake than icing. The cake wasn't really as moist as it should be. And the icing really overpowered the cake. (I had the Birthday cake cupcake) I feel like I might go into a sugar coma right now. So there you have it, it was just okay. I might watch their new show as long as they don't piss me off by making DC look bad. Final Verdict: I'll be taking my $3 back to Giant or more likely eating the free ones that my co-worker bakes. read more

Oh Georgetown Cupcake, how I love thee. I used to work near the Bethesda location and I would often head over there for the cupcake of the day, which is definitely worth it. Yes they are a little pricey but you shouldn't be eating a million cupcakes all of the time anyway! Overall I find them to be tasty and aesthetically appealing (cute!). Ok, so some people don't like them but everyone has different taste preferences. Bottom line: you just have to try it for yourself! I recommend the red velvet and the lava fudge, but really you can't go wrong. Oh and I also used them for a bridal shower. The resulting cupcakes, complete with custom toppers, were both easy to order and tasted nice. The display stand I bought from them was simple enough that I was able to hand it off to the wait staff at the restaurant where the shower was held, without instructions, and they made it happen. Picking them up was actually the only occasion when I encountered an incredibly long wait time which was distressing at the time since I was on a tight schedule and they were supposedly ready for pick up. The parking garage located across the street also takes an incredible amount of patience. There are also a few street parking spaces but that takes luck. All in all, give it a try, preferably during the day and on a weekday to avoid serious crowds. read more

3.5 stars - I had shared the toasted marshmallow, key lime, and salted chocolate caramel with my bf. The cupcakes are designed nicely and are tasty. However, they are a bit too sweet for my taste and the cake was slightly dryer than normal. Salted caramel is better with vanilla cake not chocolate and all GC had was chocolate. Toasted marshmallow did not really tasted smore like. Nor did it have a marshmallowy but it still had smooth, creamy frosting. Key lime was too sweet with not enough of the tangy-sour kick. It really depends on the visit; sometimes the cupcakes are great, and sometimes they are way too dry. With all the hype and the TLC TV show... we figured we should check these people out. So, since the in-laws live over in Bethesda, we figured we'd pick up the wifey's little sisters and take a trip over to the Bethesda G-town Cupcake. When we get there the line is out the door of course... so we wait in line patiently and look at the menu picking out our cupcakes. I had the Red Velvet, the wife had the double chocolate, and we also picked up a carrot cupcake, a peanut butter fudge, a chocolate coconut and a strawberry. We bought our cupcakes... a half dozen for $15. I just loooove this designer cupcake trend... these places charging $3 a cupcake and such... for that price they should walk themselves in my mouth and napkin off the remaining icing on my lips for me... seriously.... Buuuut, anywhoo... we paid and went home to eat. The general consensus across the cupcakes was that the cake tasted like boxed cake mix... nothing special. Not bad... but not wow. The icing on my Red Velvet had a good cream cheese flavor. Others said the icing was a wee bit sweet on theirs. Overall, the general consensus was that the cupcakes were good, but not great. Everytime I pass through the DC area, I stop in Bethesda and get cupcakes here - I've never had to wait in line longer than 10 minutes at this location. (For anyone curious - I've been to the location in Soho NYC, and the quality was just not up to par. Maybe growing pains were to blame - I went when they had just opened that storefront.) I personally find the vanilla cream cheese frosting here too tangy and "cream-cheesy" for my taste, so I generally stick to the buttercream frostings. The cupcakes here are consistently moist (even after 3 days on my kitchen table and not refrigerated...4 might have been pushing it) and have the perfect frosting to cupcake ratio in my opinion (not too much frosting to the point it's overwhelming, maybe 1:3 ish). I've tried and loved all of the following: Chocolate^2, Vanilla Birthday, Lava Fudge, Lemon Blossom and RV. Note that 2 of those flavors are chocolate cupcakes - and I don't like chocolate cupcakes anywhere else. They use good, high-quality dark chocolate and you can really taste the difference! Needed to know what the fuss is about. Tried 3 different flavors: vanilla squared, blueberry cheesecake, and key lime. I am white cake enthusiast so that tells be a lot about a cake shop. I was disappointed by the density and what also appeared to be a cream cheese frosting on said cupcake. The key-lime tastes as though it uses the same heavy vanilla base with key-lime zest. I discovered Georgetown Cupcakes in March of 2011. I had heard of DC Cupcakes on TV but never really watched it. A friend brought a few over & I chose a Strawberry. One word: Heavenly! It was the single best strawberry cupcake I had ever eaten, fresh strawberries in both the moist cake & the buttercream frosting). So seeing that mine & my daughter's birthdays were coming up in a couple weeks, I made it known we wanted to make a trip to Georgetown Cupcake for a couple dozen cupcakes instead of having a cake. When we got there, there was no line just a few people in the store, the employees were very friendly & we left with an assortment of flavors, 2 dozen! Since then, I've made at least one trip a month (sometimes more, like in April when they have Cherry Blossom or during the holiday season). Ahh, flavors! The menu has daily flavors, available every day, flavors available certain days of the week and the monthly specials, available only for that month. My favorites are definitely the Red Velvet (available daily), the Strawberry (available in February as a special and every Sunday), the Cherry Blossom (available in April), the Bananas Foster (available in September), the Pumpkin Spice (available in October & November) and in December, the most heavenly holiday flavors like Chocolate Egg Nog, Gingerbread, Rudolph Red Velvet, Chocolate Peppermint, see the menu for all of the choices. The red velvet is their signature cupcake, moist red cocoa cake with a delicious, smooth cream cheese frosting. And don't pass up the Vanilla 2 (vanilla cake with vanilla cream cheese frosting) because you think it's just a plain old vanilla cupcake. It's amazing! Parking is tricky, especially on weekends, but generally you can find a spot because people are constantly coming & going and it's way less crowded than the Georgetown location. Basically, when your sweet tooth is saying "feed me" this is one place that will definitely satisfy! They now have stores in New York City/Soho, Boston & Los Angeles. I did the mobile order for Georgetown Cupcakes. We ordered at 8:30 in the morning and wanted pickup at four. We arrived at four o clock and they said they didn't have the 2/6 cupcakes we ordered and we had to pick new ones because they were done baking for the day! I was very upset because I was so excited to get a flavor and they didn't have it! Even when we picked new ones it wasn't a big selection because they were out of the other ones too! The cupcakes were really good but I expected better service. By the end of the weekend I had but one left, and so I store it in the freezer to see if I can preserve it. I pulled it out this morning, and it was still delicious! Eh...first time here. I'm staying in a nearby hotel and the front desk clerk recommended this place saying 'they have the best cupcakes EVER'! Well... It wasn't bad. Definitely very cute and decorated cupcakes but the taste was nothing to write home about. I tried the chocolate ganache. Again, not bad but rated like any other chocolate cupcake. For the price I would expect more. I also tried the key lime. This is where I knocked stars off. The faint hint of lime was barely enough for me not to think this was a vanilla cupcake with a piece of lime candy on it. Maybe it was just this batch but I could barely taste any lime at all. Overall, if you have a sweet tooth and are craving a cupcake this place will work but I guess my hopes were too high going in. read more

I have tried the cupcakes both here and in Georgetown on more than one location. My comments about the taste apply to both, although any comments about the location only apply to this store. Let me be blunt. The cupcakes are severely overpriced. Eating the cupcakes is a cute novelty thing for those trying to "experience" DC, but they're not good for much else. The line is always out the door (and never moves quickly) and leads you to a very tiny store. Once inside, you have the chance to look over a menu of cupcakes, some of which rotate to give you variety. The cupcakes are already baked, leaving you wondering what exactly causes the consistent holdup. The actual cupcakes aren't particularly impressive and at times they are dry. I will say that I find it cool that the store showcases a variety. If you do come here, I recommend the red velvet, lemon, and the chocolate mint one. If someone else pays for the cupcakes, then they'r pretty decent. If you find yourself forking over the money for them, you'll find yourself feeling like they may not be worth the hype. At the end of the day, this is a "DC staple" and it's nice to say that you'e at least tried it. read more

Totally my favorite cupcakes EVER. By "my favorite cupcakes" I mean ALL OF THEM. Not just that seasonal one they have for 4 weeks in a year. No, they're consistently solid on their cupcakes. If you're reading this because you're considering going, but not sure if it's worth the hype, just go. Then you can decide for yourself and take part in the Georgetown Cupcake debate. One thing is for sure though, the Bethesda location doesn't seem to get nearly the same line as the Georgetown location does but it still sometimes gets backed up. My favorite quote from a customer in front of us in line once was "I don't understand what takes so long. It's not as if they're making the cupcakes." True that. And yes, don't be surprised to find yourself in line long enough to be talking to strangers standing next to you. I'm still giving it 5 stars. read more
