I bought four cupcakes: Cherry Blossom, Birthday Cake, Toffee Crunch, and Honey Banana.
I really wanted to like these. I really did. But as a first-time customer, this visit was also my last. The Cherry Blossom was weak. Dried cherries in the cupcake was seen as the only attempt to make these "cherry". Not even a hint of cherry flavor in the buttercream. I loved the simplicity of Birthday Cake. Unfortunately, that was all I liked about it. There wasn't enough vanilla flavor either. Toffee Crunch was lacking toffee flavor. And Honey Banana had hints of both. But like the others, definitely lacked flavors of both these components.
But really? This is what you call a good cupcake? Pretty, yes. But not nearly as great as the ones at Baked and Wired. Not to toot my own horn, but as a professional baker myself, I think I would know what a quality buttercream is supposed to be. The buttercream here is nowhere near right. Why does it develop a shell on the outside? Why are there airholes? Why is it NOT smooth? Italian buttercream is where it's at: better tasting, much smoother, great texture, light and fluffy. Also, what's with the little piece of sugar flower on top of my cupcake? I highly doubt they were handmade in the shop. And piping your buttercream? Talk about amateurs.
I left these out for a day or so. Usually scratch made cupcakes are supposed to keep their moisture without spoiling if they are sitting out for hours. Pastries, especially cakes, are best consumed at room temperature. Yet, these become so stale and dry from sitting out. What a bummer.
What about these lines everyone keeps talking about? Well, seeing as the shop is incredibly small, of course there has to be a line going out the door. These lines are by no means anything close to the lines you would see at lunch or dinner hour at Chipotle. You can't really fit more than 10 people in a line, more or less, in the shop. The line also has to do with there being a single register in the entire store. This is the most efficient way for the employees to count the drawer after every shift. But least efficient for those that are trying to get their grubby hands onto an overpriced, overhyped cupcake. You can't have another register or employee ring up a second customer at a time?
This experience really made me realize, "maybe I just don't like this cupcake trend". I don't enjoy overhyped cupcakes. I will pay for a quality product. Or maybe people just enjoy their wasteful packaging. I mean, what woman can resist a bubblegum pink box with a black daisy on it? They even have one that holds a single effing cupcake! What a waste of money and resources. I'm a fan of simplicity, but I can confidently say Gtown Cupcakes is all T and no A.
