My move to the desert necessitated establishing a relationship with a new dentist. I lucked out immediately finding Dr. Chang. His practice has everything: a skilled practitioner with a great personality, friendly and helpful staff, and an attractive, relaxing office environment. I was postponing major dental work well over a year and I knew that I couldn't wait any longer. I was comparing major dental insurance companies for an individual policy and found that they all were geared toward maintenance and limited to major dental and restorative dental coverage. Rip-Off! I was searching for a dentist with expertise with contemporary dental procedures - one who could do minor teeth extractions, cavity fillings and minor dental implants along with bone grafting, if needed. I wanted a dentist who could do all these procedures in the same office and would be fair and not over charge and stay within the dental code fees for my particular area in the desert, since Medicare does not cover nor offer excellent reciprocal dental insurance plans combined with their health insurance plan. I decided on Dr. Chang and so far it's been a positive experience. It is a clean and well kept dental clinic with a shaded under building parking area. On my initial appointment, after all of my dental x-rays were taken by one of his experienced dental assistants, Dr. Chang thoroughly examined all of my teeth and took his time explaining different options such as removable partials, bridge work, partial dentures and implants. Since my interest was in implants and not the old fashioned "wearing and soaking dentures in Polident" alternative - Dr. Chang was professional and honest as to what he could do and what he would not do depending on the thickness of my bone structure and specific nasal areas for dental implantations. A proposed treatment plan was explained with each step along with the dental codes with the dental fees with my initial consultation and cost comparisons if I went with a few implants with bridge work, etc. - all explained by another experienced dental assistant who was patient and understanding with the many questions I had asked her. My teeth were also cleaned on my first appointment by Dr. Chang's Dental Hygienist. My second appointment was for a removal of an aching decayed tooth and a surgical removal of broken cracked imbedded roots. In the past, I never was conscious for surgical teeth extractions - so I was nervous having broken, erupted and imbedded dental roots removed with local anesthesia. The extractions went well, along with the bone grafting and I now prefer to be conscious whenever it is economically ($) possible. Dr. Chang called me in the evening to see how I was doing and the next day the throbbing subsided and I had no pain. I'll have the stitches removed in a couple of days and I'll see when Dr Chang feels we can move on to step number two with other problem areas that I have on the other side of my mouth. Lessons learned - Don't postpone dental cleanings and repairs to cracked or minor cavities! I joined a dental discount plan with Aetna called Vital Savings by Aetna Program which provides members access to discounted fees with Dental providers who participate in the Aetna program. It's cheaper to enroll directly through the Aetna Company website: Vital Savings by Aetna. Just make sure you're on the Aetna website - not through an insurance agent like Dental Plans which over charges membership fees for the Aetna Vital Savings Discount Program. Dr. Chang's Dental firm is a participating provider with the Aetna Discount Program and has certain discounted services with some of the dental procedures. read more

After moving here from Long Beach last year I had to find a new dentist. Had a horrific experience at Gentle Dental (see my review of them) so I decided to cancel my Delta HMO plan and pay cash for a quality dentist. I chose Dr. Chang's office based on his great reviews. As a health care provider myself (Optometrist), I know what good care is and I couldn't have been happier with Dr. Chang's practice. Nice office, good location, pleasant staff and great Dentist. I've been going to Dr. Chang for about a year and a half now and always find him and his staff to be pleasant, professional and prompt. I never wait long for a scheduled appointment. When I'm in the chair, Dr. Chang and his assistants always check in to see how I'm doing and are careful and thoughtful while doing procedures. Watch your pocketbooks! And don't believe a word said. For reasons I won't go in to, I was leery to begin with and everything that happened confirmed my fears. The actual work performed I assume was fine, as it was simple enough - time will tell. However, almost everything, if not literally everything, I was told was either incorrect or inaccurate and/or mischaracterized. I called before my first appointment to go over, in detail, what I was wanting done. In the discussion, I was specifically told I didn't need to pay my $50 deductible (I didn't really care, since it was only $50, but I paid attention when they said it since it went against my understanding). I was also told a portion of my initial work wouldn't be covered by my insurance (again, I didn't care, I wanted it done). At my appointment, they again told me, prior to doing anything, that a portion of the work I wanted done was not covered by my insurance (fine, I wanted it done anyway). Also, I wasn't having all I wanted done on my first visit because I wanted a "pre-authorization estimate" from my insurance provider for the bulk of what I wanted done). When I went to pay, I was then told that I did owe them the $50 deductible, contrary to what they had previously advised me ($50, big deal, but now I'm wondering what else hey told me was inaccurate). Due to the deductible confusion, when I left the appointment I was sure to confirm with them that the amount they wanted me to pay was "everything I owed them and I would get no future bill for the work I had done", which they confirmed. (thank goodness, I was smart enough request a "pre-authorization estimate" from my insurance provider for the bulk of what I wanted done). Also, Dr. Chang advised me the estimate would like 4-5 weeks (fine, I was in no rush). 2-3 weeks later my insurance sent me an estimate for a portion of the remaining work I wanted done. When I called my insurance provider to ask when I would receive the estimate for the other portions of the remaining work, they advise it wasn't in queue. When I advise my insurance that Dr. Chang said it takes 4-5 weeks for an estimate, they advised me that wasn't true because the partial estimate I had already received was issued in one week and the reason it took 2-3 weeks to get to me was due to Dr. Chang's delay, not theirs. When I called the doctor's office to find out why they didn't request the estimate for all portions of the work I wanted done, I was told "Sorry, we forgot. We'll do it now" (that's three weeks lost). Since I had them on the phone already, I confirmed with them, again, that I was all paid-up for what I owed them and they said I was (that's second confirmation that I had paid them all I owed them until any further work was done). Now, on the 5th week, when I still haven't received the other pre-authorization estimate due to the doctor's delay, I receive a bill from Dr. Chang. When I called to discuss the bill, I was told what I paid was only an estimate because my insurance didn't cover everything I had done thus far. When I advised them that we had already been over this several times and that they were the ones who told me, twice, the insurance wouldn't cover it, I asked why they confirmed with me, twice, that I was all paid up? That fell on deaf ears. (By the way, while all of his was going on, I received a call from Dr. Chang's office trying to get me to set up multiple appointments for work for the partial estimate I had received as well as for work they knew I was awaiting an estimate for -- pushy!!!) Needless to say, I will never be going back to Dr. Chang and thank goodness, I was smart enough request a "pre-authorization estimate" from my insurance provider for the bulk of what I wanted done. Had we gotten into the bulk of what I wanted to do with them, which was going to be relatively pricey, who knows how bad all the lies, confusion, and improper billing methods would have gotten??? I was referred to Dr. Chang's office by a friend. From initial contact through my dental visit, Dr. Chang and his team were superior. Andrea did her best to get me an appointment asap (routine visit) and called me later that day with a sooner date (someone had cancelled). The Doctor's website is an excellent source of info and even has new patient forms you can complete ahead of time. The visit itself was flawless. The team made me feel like I was joining a family and were kind, considerate and attentive. The office was clean and organized. I just began with Dr. Chang after ten years with another local dentist. My appointment went smoothly and I was impressed by the friendliness and courteousness of the office staff. I was invited in right when my appointment was scheduled, and had my x-rays and teeth cleaning right away. Dr. Chang was easy to talk to and he explained everything that had been done. He gave an honest appraisal of my dental state which is quite good and he didn't order anything unnecesary. Like several others who have reviewed Dr. Chang, I relocated from Los Angeles in October, 2015. I'd had the same excellent dentist for almost 30 years. My L.A. dentist always explained the condition of my teeth and gums and made suggestions for keeping everything healthy. Well...Dr. Change gave me the exact same explanations and suggestions! All of the reviews on YELP gave him 5 stars but in my book he deserves 6 or more. I had my usual fear of starting at new dentist (insurance forced the change) but after one session in his chair it was evident the fear was unfounded. It's one thing to hear that "oh he's really good" but its another thing to actually become a believer. If you have any fear of dentists at all or any hesitation about starting at new place; I'd encourage you to go meet him and the staff and in an instant you will see they have professional care for their patients as individuals. i've had three appointment recently and I found each time that the atmosphere is calm; the staff is cohesive, effecient, and caring. More importantly Dr Chang is unique in his attitude toward patient care. He is genuine; he is focused while he works; he explains everything and is so compassionate as well. He asked me frequently if I was "doing ok?" and offered to give me a "break" if I needed it. His work is immpeciable with minimal to no discomfort and I have so much confidence in his skill that I want others to have the same experience.
