This a perfect Sunday Brunch with the girls. We did a yoga class before and this restaurant was right around the corner. Our class started at 9:30am and there were people already outside. You know it's a good place when there is a big line. This has been a local staple in Seattle for years. Even our Seattle mayor was at the restaurant because it's one of its favorites. We had a group go 7 and had to wait but go seated. They are know for their French toast. It's amazing because you can get a single , half of full order of it. It was the best French toast I have ever eaten. I ordered the BLTA sandwich with salad, where others ordered different variety of omelets and egg dishes. This is an absolute gem of a brunch spot! I love how quaint and adorable this place is with their funky and colorful plating and beautiful decor. The parking meter is broken and you need to download the app and pay $5.50 by phone. After that, we went to the restaurant. The store was almost full, but we were able to sit at the booth right away. Our server responded pleasantly and gave us recommendations. So I ordered half size of the popular French toast, my hubby chose Chicken Fried Steak and Egg and 2 of coffee. French Toast: Ask your server for the topping of the day. It was a banana. Served with 100% pure maple syrup. 1/2 order is $10. As for the taste, this French toast was certainly good. Best pancakes I've had at a restaurant, period. Every single thing we ate was fire. Sausage was tasty, bacon was thick, bread was toasted to perfection. Pancakes were buttery, golden, slightly crisp on the edges, chewy...just unbelievably good. And the raspberry jam on the table sent those cakes straight to the moon. All the times I've come here, I've been seated right away. If there is a wait, it isn't long at all it goes by pretty quickly. I ordered the pesto scrambled eggs with hash browns and sourdough toast. I highly recommend this dish and as a pesto lover, could have even used a dollop of pesto to top off the eggs. I'm posting this review on behalf of my wife, who is too embarrassed and non-confrontational to post it herself. We recognize Geraldine's is popular and many reviews are very positive, this is simply our repeated experience. My wife recently met a close friend for a special brunch at Geraldine's (Columbia City). They hadn't seen each other in about a year, and before that it had been many years, so it was an important reunion. She chose Geraldine's because of its reputation and the lines it often draws. When she arrived, she asked to put her name in for a table. She was told they don't seat you until the full party is present, which I completely appreciate and is fine. While waiting for her friend to arrive, and because there were no other patrons waiting in line to be seated, she asked if she could sit at the counter (they have a 10-15 seat lunch counter that was completely empty other than only one other person there) and buy a cup of coffee while she waited. The front desk attendant told her to go right ahead. My wife sat at an open seat with an extra seat or two between her and the only other patron at the 10-15 seat counter, and a staff member approached my wife with a confrontational, hostile tone and questioned why she was sitting there. My wife explained she had already put her name on the list and was simply hoping to have coffee while waiting. Instead of just handling it normally, the staff member made it clear she was not welcome at the counter and initially asked my wife to move and sit directly next to the only other person sitting at the counter. Both she and the other patron shared glances and felt awkward, and taken aback. However, the bizarre and rude reaction of the staff member did not end there - she went on to say she would have to talk to the front door person about my wife being at the counter, and that they would not serve her coffee there. She was told they could give her coffee in the waiting area, or she could wait outside. Because the atmosphere felt so hostile and uncomfortable, my wife chose to step outside and wait (without coffee) until her friend arrived. They did end up having brunch together, but it put a needless, negative tone on what should have been a special catch-up. This also wasn't a one-off impression. I too have experienced the rudeness on a prior visit, when we encountered the same "too cool for school" service attitude - rigid, dismissive, and unnecessarily unfriendly. In addition to the attitude and vibe of the staff, they were also plainly poor servers. We had to ask for silverware and napkins, and I don't recall being given or asked if I wanted a refill of water during the entire meal - and the restaurant was operating at half capacity. The food is average at the very best. However, the real issue lies in the poor hospitality and lack of consistency. Geraldine's clearly has a strong reputation, but in our experience the service has repeatedly fallen short of basic courtesy - to the extent that it feels rude and unwelcoming. I'm sorry to have to write such a disappointing review, because Geraldine's has all the ingredients to be a great community diner, and I live in the Columbia City area and genuinely care about this neighborhood. I'll add that, based on several conversations I've had with other longtime community members and locals, my wife's and my experiences do not appear to be outliers. My hope is that ownership reads this feedback and treats it as an opportunity to make real, culture-level improvements. Service is part of the product, and if the current pattern continues, it risks accelerating an already souring local reputation and undermining the long-term viability of the business and the jobs it supports, both directly and through the broader ripple effects in the community. read more

I love this diner! The crispy hash browns & pancakes came highly recommended and I agree with those recommendations! The daily special during my visit was the applesauce pancake with cinnamon butter, it was heaven in a bite paired with warm maple syrup! The hash browns with onions and extra peppers were so good, I like that they use red onion instead of white. The portions are big and the ingredients were all super fresh. We were a party of 2 and we split one full order of pancakes and one order of hash browns. We both left stuffed and there was food leftover. I can't wait to come back and try more menu items the next time I'm in town. The wait for 2 was about 30-40 minutes. Once we were seated, we ordered and the food came out promptly. The service was quick and friendly. The vibes inside are basic American diner. It's pretty loud especially since it was so busy. I ordered their French toast and a cup of tomato basil soup. The French toast of the day was honey peaches. The toast itself was pretty good, super crispy, and a little hard to cut. The inside is fluffy and soft. The peaches were perfectly sweet. I do wish there were a bit more toppings, but it was still delicious. The tomato soup was also good, had strips of fresh basil on top. It was perfectly seasoned and fresh. The server was initially engaging but then hard to get ahold of. My husband and I split the corned beef hash and a bowl of chili. I went back after a year out of convenience: the food is decent and it was close for my out-of-town friends. The food is still fine, but the portions remain anything but generous. What I don't understand is why the fly problem still isn't addressed. I haven't seen flies anywhere else in Columbia City. Overall it was flavorful but had a lot of caramelized onions. I could of used a bit less of that and more salmon. Seems like they wanted to save costs. I had the Geraldine's Casserole and also the French toast of the day which was white peach French toast. Both were so delicious!! The casserole came out piping hot and so fresh and tasty. We shared the French Toast, herbed omelette, and eggs a la Mexicana. The food is pretty decent. The French toast is their signature dish and it is so crispy and crunchy! Today's fruit is peach, and it seems like the fruit changes based on the day. The herbed omelette had generous amounts of goat cheese that is quite sharp and caramelized onions - it's a flavor bomb! A miss is the hash browns are a bit oily and soft, not really crispy. The eggs a la Mexicana is decent - you can make egg and beans taco with their tortilla and pico de gallo. For all the hype Geraldine's carries, it's really just a fine brunch spot. Yes, the neighborhood is cute, yes, the diner is cute and the service is great, but come during the busy hours and you're staring down an hour waitlist. For all that, the food is really just, well, fine. Some of the menu items (like chicken fried steak) I could compare against Patty's Eggnest down in Southcenter (and other locations), a comparatively "affordable get it done brunch" spot. They do sport some solid vegetarian options, but nothing memorable enough for me to think of them as anything special, except... Wow is their french toast fantastic! Truly the one menu item standout, everything about the french toast, the toast itself, the fruit, the cream, everything was incredibly well done. I came here on a Monday morning with a friend around 10 AM. This place was totally packed! They had a wait list, but for two people it only ended up being like a 5 to 10 minute wait. Our server was pretty quick to come by and ask us if we wanted anything to drink and to give us menus.
