First time at this establishment I was excited. It's been on my list of places to try in Seattle. I was really looking forward to supporting a community that is part of the LGBTQIA+ they are also a family business well-known in the community and of color. The restaurant is very clean, was greeted by two servers working, friendly atmosphere, noise level was average and it's a smaller establishment, please keep that in mind. We ordered the french fries which are shoestring fries, side of catfish, a side of red beans and rice, and a side plate of fried green tomatoes, which comes with four bite-size pieces. Being from the south born and raised, I'm a particular about my catfish and even though the breading had flavor, the catfish to me did not taste very clean plus there was a hair stuck to the breading of the catfish. It wasn't a small hair. The mystery hair either fell in the oil or it was in the batter is my guess. Because when I went to break the catfish apart, that is when it sprung the rest of it out, there was a small curl tip sticking out of the top of the fish. Unfortunately, the green tomatoes had absolutely no flavor. I will say the red beans and rice had the most flavor. I could taste the seasoning and the spice with a little bit of heat. I also really appreciate that there was some veggies mixed in with some meat as well. The shoestring fries it's either a hit for some or a miss and for me it was a miss, but I've had lots of different kinds of shoestring fries from multiple locations, and different states. It's a hard one to make. They were fried crispy and excellent. I would say it's more of the seasoning that was a dislike. The decor throughout the restaurant was beautiful to view. There are photos of the owners their family and friends. Not only could I see the love and commitment put into this restaurant, but also I could feel it as soon as I walked in. My takeaway is for the cooks to wear hairnets and if they have beards, to also put nets on their beards to further prevent hairs falling into people's food. Fried green tomatoes are not an item that can be found at most restaurants. It's easy to make but definitely the seasoning on it could be improved. Also, possibly just going simple with the seasoning like salt and a little pepper on the shoestring fries, sometimes keeping it simple is the best. A topic I want to touch on, not because I got it, but because going through the reviews prior to coming not too many people were discussing the waffles and this was a direct witness of what I could see. I did not taste it so I can't describe how the waffles tasted, but they look like they were cooked golden brown, which was nice but they are I would say more on the thinner side than what I usually see at places that serve chicken and waffles. If you are reading this review and you are looking for a place that serves you a nice thick waffle please do not come here because you will be disappointed, and I do not want people being disappointed when they are looking for something in particular and they end up ordering something that they did not want. Besides my recommendations, as I mentioned, this is a place that is full of love and commitment and I appreciate the community that has supported this establishment. We came in on Father's Day and it was busy! It is definitely worth the wait so put your name on the list and find some shade. You won't be disappointed. We had the chicken and waffles and the biscuits and gravy with mushroom gravy and scrambled eggs. Both dishes were delicious! They have a myriad of hot sauces to choose from at each table. We didn't try cocktails this time but they all looked good. They have a variety of seating options (bar seats, short tops, booths). This must be the longest wait I have ever experienced to not only get sat but to get food. Now, if the food would have been worth the wait, then money, but no. I've been here on two different Saturdays within the past year and walked away as a very happy man both times. Starting with the food, the shrimp and grits are creamy and packed with flavor, the eggs Benedict with bacon has perfectly poached eggs with a zippy crystal hollandaise, the waffle has a satisfying texture and comes with a comforting henny butter, and the best part that ties it all together: GARLIC. AIOLI. I have tasted many garlic aioli in my 28 years of life and this is by far the most delicious garlic aioli around. It's something I can't explain; you need to try it for yourself. With the breakfast potatoes, on the Benedict, in the shrimp and grits, by itself, I don't care, I just need it bottled up ASAP. As for the atmosphere, it's quite cozy and warm as a diner would be. I had to wait around 30 minutes both times I went because it was prime brunch time on Saturday and was fully worth the wait. The service is very welcoming and kind, and there's a good variety of sauces available on each table. They also serve Boon Boona coffee which is a Renton based coffee roaster, and I always love seeing local businesses support other local businesses. I just got a thigh with my meal although I prefer legs. (I considered rewording that sentence because it sounds a lil crazy, but I can't think of any other way to word it). Anyway. There was a minor mishap with my friend's food- she'd asked for a chicken breast with her waffle because she doesn't like dark meat, but she was given a thigh. However the staff fixed the issue right away when she brought it up. They apologized & explained that it would take just a few minutes to fry up the new chicken because everything's cooked fresh. It wasn't a big deal & they handled the mistake perfectly. The customer service was great! The chicken was good and the waffle was perfect due to its crispy edges and the delicious honey butter. The ambiance is top-tier. We loved the decor & the personal touches around the restaurant such as family photos & flyers for community events. My friend & I talked about how good the playlist was. I got the honey butter chicken sandwich here after the meal, i have to say i have a pretty positive impression. this came as a fried chicken breast sandwiched between two large biscuits, both drenched in honey butter The biscuits were excellent for the most part - they were baked enough to be just slightly crunchy on the outside, but the inside was marvelous. It was crumbly, broke apart so easily, and tasted so soft. The biscuits were smothered with a honey butter mixture, that was very sweet. This was generally good, but I think there was too much honey, therefore the sweetness. I would've preferred a mixture that was mostly focused on butter with a little bit of honey. The sweetness tasted good at first, but towards the end it began to get a little tiring. The biscuits were so sticky it was impossible to eat this as a sandwich - you had to eat it with a fork and knife The chicken was quite good - especially when it came to the seasoning and how well it was breaded. The breading was a deep brown, which indicates how well it was fried. The seasoning was mildly spicy, and I wish it would've been slightly more so to counteract the flavor of the sweet biscuits, but not too many complaints there. I should also mention that I would've preferred thigh over breast when it came to the choice of meat, as while not overcooked, I can't say the inside was especially flavorful I also got the grits as a side - and they were pretty good. Nothing too special, as a bit one-note, but not bad I did appreciate how warm this came out, though For the price of about $20 in total, I thought it wasn't too unreasonable. For those not familiar, Fat's is a southern style spot featuring fried chicken and other down South hits. The restaurant occupies the former location of the once renowned Catfish Corner at Cherry and MLK in the Central District. Since we are pescatarians, we went with oyster and shrimp plates and added waffles as sides. The plates also came with a salad. Our seafood choices were nicely breaded and well seasoned, and the waffles were great! We only wish the seafood portion size was larger. this is one of my new favorite places in Seattle for brunch. The food is realllly good. I really enjoyed the chicken it was cooked super well. The only downside for the chicken and waffles was the waffle was kind of small and sad compared to some of the massive waffles I e seen elsewhere. But together it still tasted great. The food was also super filling so you'll leave super satisfied :) The owner was so nice, the service was patient and helpful and they brought out the food fairly quickly given how busy they usually are. Get there early... We arrived about 10 minutes after they opened. We were able to snag the second to last two top. The only one left was the one by the door. It was a little too loud but hey, it was worth it and the wait. The quality in shown in the food, so I didn't mind that it took a little longer. Also considering the place just opened up and already was 90% to capacity. Impressive to see the quantity and the consistency in quality coming out of a small kitchen. Fat's is in a part of town I've never been to. Quaint spot on the corner of the block. Fairly easy to find street parking. First time was on Sunday before a Seahawks game and the wait was too long for us to make it in time for the game. Took my wife back a week later during the week. Staff were very sweet, warm and welcoming. The decor was intriguing in that it paid homage to the local neighborhood and culture. Couldn't help but look around the entire time. Served with Henny Butter & syrup. I got the thigh. To start we shared a carafe of Mimosa which was nice. The waffle to be honest is similar to Roscoes which is thin style (Maybe a west coast thing?) waffle with lots of little ridges. I'm not particularly a fan but it pairs well with the chicken which on the other hand was delicious. I also got gravy, which is an extra $4 but was worth it. My buddy got the biscuit sandwich which got a thumbs up from him, though the biscuit looked a bit burnt to me. Service was prompt and friendly but not very engaging - I chalk it up to it being pretty busy. After a few searches, I found this spot where many were raving about the biscuits, and I haven't had soul food in awhile so this all sounds great! We were starving and couldn't wait to dig in! It was actually really crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside but very bland, so definitely needed hot sauce! The cornbread was super dry, we barely took a bite of it, unfortunately we had ordered two so a huge waste. The Mac n cheese was very cheesy but similar to the chicken, lacked flavor. One of my friends has been wanting to take me here for a long time ever since we've had trouble coming here when it wasn't overly busy, so I was happy to be able to have it although I did go alone this time. This was on a Saturday evening at around 6:15pm, and I got seated near one of the windows facing the street. For this visit, I got their titular chicken and waffles, which comes with two pieces of chicken breasts, thighs or legs. I got the last chicken breast for the day, so I was able to have a thigh for my second piece. The waffles were just all right though they were a little sweeter than I expected especially when adding the syrup. But the chicken was the real winner here; so delicious, so juicy and so crispy too! It was even steaming hot when the plate came to my table! Food here did take a while to come out though; I waited a solid 25 minutes even though the place wasn't particularly packed. Service was also a little sporadic, like when I asked for a to-go box but didn't get one and left it at that since I was in a rush to get to an event. The bathroom is clean. Food wise, we didn't have as much luck as the many other reviews here. The Food: Seafood Sampler, $24 - 3 Stars Consisting of shaved catfish, oysters, and shrimp, there is a choice of salad or fries. Hubby wanted fries. My first bite was a shrimp. It was very salty, without adding any dipping sauce. The oyster and catfish pieces are more reasonable, less salty, but my taste buds were ruined by then. Everything tasted a bit salty. Their fries are cut slim, closer to McD type of size, but not shoestring fries. Fried Oyster (Sandwich), $22 - 3.5 Stars They offer an option of sandwich with choice of 1 side or a plate (protein only) with choice of 2 sides. Hubby opted for the sandwich with choice of fried mushrooms. The sandwich had a better balance of salt because of the bread. Better experience overall. Fried Green Tomatoes (side dish), $6 - 3 Stars For this side dish, we can see the coating/breading clearly, which is a bit uneven. The outside is crispy (good). I personally prefer a thicker slice of tomatoes that I have had elsewhere. We both were expecting a better experience based on the reviews. The honey butter chicken sandwich was so much better than I had imagined. Usually biscuits are so dry to me but because the biscuit is soaked in honey butter it was really moist. The chicken was also nice and crispy and not dry. The regular sandwich was also good esp w the gravy, but honey butter is better imo. I LOVE this place. The food is so ridiculously delicious and I am always having trouble deciding what to order because everything is so good. The fried green tomatoes - 10/10. I can't believe it took me over five years of traveling to this area for work to finally discover this place -- and wow, what a find! From the honey butter biscuit breakfast sandwich to the fried green tomatoes, every bite was absolutely incredible. This is hands down some of the best comfort food I've ever had. The flavors were rich, the portions generous, and the overall vibe made it feel like a warm, welcoming spot you just want to keep coming back to. We went here with friends, not expecting they would have much for us as vegetarians, but they were super amenable. Not only did they have good options on the normal menu, but our friend recommended the BLT so we got that and they substituted the bacon with fried green tomato. The sandwich felt fresh and flavorful and worked well with the hot suaces they had. It took a bit to come out but that is because they make everything there so it takes time. Worth the wait. They are also super friendly as well. I think they could single handedly break the seattle freeze if given the chance. Everything was seasoned well. The chicken and the waffles were crispy how I like it. The sausage gravy was my favorite! The service was fast and to the point! I'd recommend you know what you want before you arrive! I was impressed at how efficiently they were taking orders, making drinks, and checking people out. The restaurant is design for its purpose. A fast casual place. The room is filled with pictures of history and culture. Seating is limited, so get there early! Pricing is absolutely reasonable and you get what you pay for! Insanely great all around. We stopped here on a long walk through the city and it was exactly what we needed. Vibes were awesome, vibe was delicious, service was good. Everything you could ask for.
