I was even more shocked when I saw the sheer size of this paella. I'm not kidding when I say this thing was FRICKEN HUGE. I knew I just had to give it a try. The line was pretty long, but it was moving fairly quickly, so it was worth the wait. For $5, you're given a small bowl with one mussel, one shrimp, and 2 pieces of chicken. My original excitement was brought down a bit when I tried the dish itself :-(. The paella was way too soggy and just felt like a pile of mush. It was pretty tasty, but the texture killed it for me. The shrimp was pretty good and well sized, but the mussel had no taste whatsoever. Felt like it was just thrown in there from the freezer. I finally got to try their paella yesterday at California State Fair in Sacramento after following them more than half a year on Facebook. The paella was very flavorful. it is my favorite on the West Coast. Unlike a lot of places, the rice was cooked just right, not too hard or too soft. We tried both chicken and veggiee versions. Chicken was tender and juicy. We waited for another 30 mins for the veggie one to be ready. i'm glad we asked for the shrimp which was not listed on their menu but mentioned on their Facebook board. Gerard prepared the shrimp for us and gave generous amount of shrimp while we were waiting for the veggie paella. They were actually very friendly. I too had an experience not getting their response on my banquet request last time. However, after meeting them in person and trying the paella, i would still consider having them cater my next event. But I guess I will try to avoid July-Sep which is supposed to be the busiest time for them. read more

[DISCLAIMER] This review is purely for Gerard's catering location at the annual Eat Real Festival. Have you ever been introduced to someone you felt really attached to, only to then be swallowed by deep longing when they disappear? But then that sadness turns into sheer joy when you see him/her again? Well that was exactly how I felt about Gerard's Paella. You see, a few years ago I had the pleasure of sampling a plate of Gerard's famous paella at Oakland's Eat Real Festival. Since it was my first time ever eating this Spanish dish, I really came into it with no expectations. However, just one bite of that savory, delicious rice completely changed the course of my life. Because of that day, I make it my undying goal to make paella as often as I can. Unfortunately, it was never quite as good as Gerard's. And so I always longed to be reunited with that plate of heaven. Thankfully, it only took a couple years before I met my old friend again. Recently, my girlfriend and I stopped by the 2017 Eat Real Festival and woop Gerard's Paella was there! It was literally impossible to miss; because of how aromatic the paella was, you could literally sniff your way to Gerard's. One issue that came up during my first go-around to Gerard's was the insanely long lines. Everyone definitely had the right idea of trying the amazing paella, but that had resulted in me waiting forever for my turn. Not this time! There was almost NO WAIT TIME because the workers were efficient, both in terms of completing transactions and cooking. For example, I immediately got my food right when I paid. And boy was it orgasmic. Just like before, the paella was a one-way ticket to heaven. The rice was soft, the sauce was delicious, and portion size wasn't bad ($10 for a large). The shrimp pieces were pretty big and the chicken was SO JUICY. Looking back, I should have gotten more orders because it was that good! It was also my girlfriend's first time trying paella and she thought it was bomb. Gerard's Paella, I will definitely contact you for catering because your paella is LEGENDARY. As I walking around the Wednesday night market I came across this stand, I was interested and decided to give it a try. I ordered the shrimp and chicken paella which I can say was honestly really good. The chicken was really tender and the shrimp was extremely flavorful overall the dish was worth the money, BUT may I say me personally am not a fan of the lemonade they had. I suggest trying the lemonade and don't take my word for since I favor a certain taste and don't like to go out of my comfort zone but the drink just wasn't something for me. I recently had the pleasure of attending a private party where Gerard and his team were hired to cook for the event. Everything seemed to go perfectly smooth with set up, tear down etc. The hostess was pleased as punch. As for the food... I am one who normally watches my weight.... but lemme tell you, after a big ol helping of tasty paella, aromatic with saffron and filled with chicken, shrimp, fish and shellfish... I went back for more... PLUS I had some for breakfast in the morning. And I did not care. BEST. PAELLA. EVER. They also did a peel and eat shrimp appetizer, plus manchego with quince paste... green salad, roasted red peppers and more... A feast! It was a lot of fun to watch Gerard at work. Great people. Saw a sign at ClusterFest SF that read Paella, and I was automatically intrigued. Chicken & Shrimp Paella for $14, very reasonable considering the prices of other vendors. Honestly based on the taste, this review should've received 5 solid stars. Seasoning was on point, paella was cooked well, and it was really tasty. Three stars are taken away due to the fact that our "Chicken and Shrimp" Paella, was strictly just paella rice. Not one morsel of chicken or shrimp was found. By the time this was realized, me and my girlfriend were already inside a venue, watching a show. Not wanting to go back we just indulged in what we were given, left disappointed. They cook in mass quantities, which is understandable for a large event. My only request is that they portion out the meats correctly per guest so that everyone can get that Paella experience. I will be going back to ClusterFest tomorrow and may give them another chance, but at this point I'm not sure if I want to risk it. Updated 6/3 - Gerards has not disappointed. Once I arrived at the booth I was instantly greeted with smiles and handled with prestine care. I didn't know that something could taste even better the second time around. THERE WAS CHICKEN AND SHRIMP, and let me tell you that the Chicken and Shrimp were on point in every aspect, and it leaves me wanting more. This review is coming from the Maker Faire in NY. While heading towards the soldering workshop, I noticed a sign for Gerard's Paella and was instantly curious. As I walked closer, I noticed the huge pans of paella being cooked. It looked rich and vibrant, surely it would be good! Just then, someone walked past me with a plate full of this wonderful looking paella. I made up my mind; I was going to sample some of this paella before going on with the rest of the event. The line was relatively short, but long enough to let my stomach growl at the many pans of paella. Finally I got to order. $10 for a plate full of this colorful seafood and chicken paella. Gastronomical heaven was to be mine soon! Too bad it tasted like shit. While you certainly see lots of ingredients simmering in the pans, I tasted little of the flavors. Even I couldn't have made a more bland paella. And for something advertised as seafood and chicken paella, somehow my plate contained only the tail of a single shrimp, as if someone ate my single shrimp and tossed the tail back in. There was no fish or any hint of any seafood other than that shrimp tail. As for the chicken? It was a bit under-cooked and unsurprisingly tasteless. Then the rice was inconsistently cooked, giving us the occasional random clumps of hard rice. Before writing this review, I was surprised to see all the other 5 star reviews. The only reasonable conclusion i can draw is that for this event, they picked inexperienced, apathetic chefs who didn't attempt to match the quality others have experienced with Gerard's Paella. I'm just glad my girlfriend had convinced us to buy one plate to try first, otherwise I'd have been stuck with 2 plates of disappointing garbage. I discovered Gerard's Paella at SF Carnaval 2015 and would have walked right past their booth if it wasn't for their huge pans!! You can't walk by and NOT notice them! So I lined up & was excited to buy a plate! It's been awhile since I've eaten paella so I was extra happy about this nice surprise, but the anticipation was better than the meal. It was good don't get me wrong, but it wasn't "foodgasm, I'm still eating even if I'm full" paella from either Canella or Picaro. Went over to the "Eat Real Festival" this past Saturday at Oakland's Jack London Square and noticed the LONG-ASS line for Gerard's Paella. There were lots of folks already dining on the paella, so I figured it must be pretty freakin amazing. While waiting in that aforementioned LONG-ASS line, I overheard some guys talking about how the chef here had beaten Bobby Flay in a paella throwdown. Well hot damn, the anticipation kept building! Finally after what may have been a half-hour wait, I reached the front of the line and was salivating at the thought of digging into that $5 chicken and seafood paella...hadn't eaten lunch yet, so I was starving! Some lady and her friend comes up to me and offers to buy my paella if she can order in my stead...apparently she figured it would be worth an extra Lincoln to jump that line...smart thinking! Free paella? SCORE! I knew that for a five-spot, I wasn't exactly going to be served a generous portion of grub, but damn, that teeny tiny bit Gerard's gave me was even smaller than the servings that other folks had received. I asked the cashier about it and luckily they were willing to swap it out. Slightly larger portion...oh well...as long as it was gonna be big on taste! Well, the only thing the paella was big on was disappointment. The rice was mushy, the only seafood I got was 3 mussels (1 of which didn't really open), and a couple of boiled flavorless tiny chicken drumsticks. If I hadn't been so hungry, I probably would have chucked it back at Gerard's Paella stand. Bobby Flay has gotta be the lousiest celebrity chef on television if he somehow lost to this sorry excuse for paella. The only saving grace? That I didn't have to pay for it because some really generous woman who probably was regretting her decision had bought me my paella. Tried this at the Eat Real Fest today and it was huge disappointment. Was lured to it by the long line and by someone telling me that Gerard's was on Throw down w/ Bobby Flay and had beaten Flay by a slim margin. Kind of wondering if the guy was telling me the truth about the Bobby Flay thing because I just didn't believe it after my first bite. We waited in line for about 1/2 hour for bland, mushy rice. Hidden underneath the rice was a chicken wing (that I swear was just boiled) and on top an overcooked shrimp. Seriously - I am no Paella connoisseur by any means - but at least add some salt. Add something - hell anything so the rice would have some flavor. It was just a pile of golden yellow, tasteless mushy mess. I was even more annoyed after I read some reviews on Yelp that the paella was supposed to have a mussel in addition to the chicken wing and shrimp. Sad. Truly sad. This is the first time I could say I wasted my money on truly bland food. Sorry Gerard - you won't be seeing my business coming your way again. Nice paella pan though; great marketing I must admit. I was excited to find a Paella booth at Maker Faire. I love Paella and it sure was great to see something other than the usual fair food. The paella pans were huge and the paella looked amazingly colorful and delicious. And yes, they had a vegetarian paella!!! Which is great because I'm vegeterian. The lines were long almost all day and they were often out of the veggie. But around 6pm I had my chance. I looked askance at the veggie plate that was given to me as it was sitting at the counter and not put on a plate when I ordered it. But I gave it a chance. Sure enough, it was cold. I asked for another one and was told that there was no more. I looked at the paella pan and there was definitely food in there. I was upset and disappointed. I tried to eat it but half of it was black and hard. So I went back and was told to talk to the chef. The chef said that the burnt crust was normal in Spain and was even the prized part of the paella. I was a bit shocked at this and I wanted to say that I've been to Spain and the paella I had there was not like this. It just looked and tasted burnt. The good part was that it was actually quite tasty and had a lot of flavor but it was ruined by the bitter and hard taste of the mostly burnt dish. I also didn't want to say, but maybe should have, that there has been research indicating that eating burnt food is actually cancerous. Lastly, the paella was VERY oily and I felt like I had a huge lump in my stomach afterwards. I wish the dish was hot or at least warm, not burnt and not too oily. I could see the potential there but was left disappointed. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect paella that's as good as the ones my mom and housekeeper/chef used to make. read more

My wife and I had Gerard's Paella for our rehearsal dinner on May 31st. We had the event at Sullivan Vineyard's in Rutherford California. The whole evening was perfect. Gerard and Stan were great. The paella was awesome. Everything exceeded our expectations. I don't write many reviews on here but Gerard's deserves the best. I cook for a living and have been doing so since 96' and in some pretty decent places on the east and west coast. The conversations with Gerard and Stan were great including the one we had about a certain someone on the food network since we both had experiences with that person. Pretty funny! Anna was awesome to work with via email. So easy and not stressful at all! I would love to have Gerard's down here in LA so I can wow more of my friends! Thank you guys so much! read more

I just can't recommend Gerard and his team highly enough. They are wonderfully professional and take great care and pride in their work. The food is incredible; not only is it delicious, seasonal and fresh but it's absolutely gorgeous in their enormous paella pans. They nailed it for our event of 80 people offering a seafood and a vegan paella, both of which were amazing. The team showed up on time, worked hard to accommodate our every request and they served exactly on time. Let us start with the fact that Gerard's (and Ana's) paella is a feast for the eyes and the taste buds! We decided to drive to Occidental on the advice of a friend who lives in the area and raved about Gerard's paella after hearing our sad but true story of having been in Barcelona last November and missing out on Paella while there... too long a story to tell on this review So we made the 40 mile trek from Concord to Occidental arriving at Gerard's booth (in the Occidental farmer's market) right as he was starting to toil (joyfully) over the biggest paella pan we have ever seen! Only to find out that in fact he actually has one that is twice the size, ten feet in diameter (Paella heaven)!!! So we waited patiently as Gerard and Ana prepared a masterful creation right before our eyes, one layer at a time. Suffice to say that we were almost feeling full by watching them create the paella yet our sense of smell would not let us forget that we still had to actually eat it in order for our taste buds to validate the reality of the experience. Gerard and Ana were such incredible hosts, they took the time to socialize with us while they entertained us with great conversation and yummy appetizers of Spanish almonds and Manchego Cheese slices with Quince Jam :-) Before we knew it a long line had formed behind us and Gerard's paella was ready to be served. We had three orders of the Paella (such oinkers...) as we had planned to eat one and take two home. Well, only one order made it home as we devoured the rich and sultry Chicken and Seafood Paella before Gerard could even finish serving everyone in line... It was absolutely delicious: the rice was moist, the chicken was tender and the seafood was sweet . We have already made plans to go back and we will bring the whole family next time for we can not guarantee that the Paella will make it home... Diverging opinions are a good thing - each taste is personal. That said, I've had better paella. What makes paella so special is the richness, freshness and multitude of its ingredients - it should be a colorful dish, full of saffron rice, mussels, shrimp, various seafood i.e. calamari or whatever you want to add, chicken, peppers etc. and none of the ingredients should be mushy, overcooked, or bland. In fact, each bite should be a revelation for your tastebuds. Gerard's - tasted in Occidental at the Farmer's Market - was a thick mush of puffed up rice kernels, yellow but bland tasting, one huge clove of garlic (skin and all), one shrimp and one piece of chicken. I love paella. Gerard's is decent paella that could use some loving touches. For instance, laying off of the olive oil. This paella was rather oily and heavy. The chicken was actually very yummy moist. Great paella color too. I sometimes like having a little burnt action going on yet this was too much. I know they were trying to get rid of all the paella except this was way too much crisp hardness in each bite. The flavor and ingredients were tasty. I have been watching Gerard's social media for over a year and although cover his a bummer, the silver lining is Gerards offering curbside meal pick up! We ordered the family size Valdeon which is their most popular dish filled with chicken, shrimp and sausage. Sadly we were so excited to dig in that I forgot to take a picture. The dish was very good and we would order again but I would get extra shrimp as those were particularly good! My only complaint is they should have a label on the to go container that has reheat instructions. I called back to get them and they said they were on my receipt online but they were not and really its easier just to slap a label on the container. Since I was going to Santa Rosa I asked other Petaluma friends if they wanted to order and three of them did and Gerards was great about marking them so I could pick up everything at once and everyone reported back their meal was delicious so I would definitely call this a hit. I've never had paella before until yesterday at the Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary Festival at Crissy Field. I saw a bunch of people holding heaps of rice plates and got my mouth watering. The price is steep for what you're getting but the value compared to all the other vendors selling mere snacks (fries, dessert, etc) made forking $10/plate over ok. I got the chicken & shrimp paella since the vegan option wasn't anything too special to me for the same price. The food was nice and warm but it got cold pretty fast; I blame the gusty coastal winds. The taste was awesome and is making me crave some right now. I dislike shrimp that isn't already fully prepared and bone-in chicken but the meats were good. The rice was superb, although I did at some Sriracha chili sauce from a neighboring vendor to spice it up. It is mushy but that's the way I want it and there are a few vegetables but not as much as I would have liked without sacrificing the amount of meat and rice. I wish food trucks would serve paella more often cause it's delicious. read more

I hate giving low star reviews to small businesses, especially ones that are inventive. I have never seen a paella pan that freakin' HUGE before! Wowza. Very impressive. But the paella itself was not very good. Let me clarify, a bunch of us ordered the paella, and ALL of our paellas tasted different. Ranging from "meh" to "ughhgh!" It was bizarre that we should all get such different paellas in a span of 5 minutes or so. The "meh" paellas weren't flavorful, and had a strange sour taste to it. And the shrimp was way over cooked. But at least there was some flavor. But one of my friends got a paella that tasted like nothing. It was just pure mush. Not flavor whatsoever. They also ran out of chicken and mussels and didn't offer a discount for those of us who ended up without those things. The line for this stand was huge and we ended up waiting half an hour for an incredibly bland, mushy plate of paella. So disappointing considering how incredibly delicious paella can be. This was the stand I was most excited for, and it ended up being the most disappointing. My friend got a refund for her dish and the rest of ours threw it away after only a few bites. read more

They were here at sacramento's off the grid event and I swear almost everyone had a plate of this in their hands. Don't know if it was overhyped for me or if it's more of a rather acquired taste, but I thought it was okay. It was very gooey and sticky, but overall, the flavor was there. We used Gerard's Paella this August to cater our wedding at the beautiful Falkirk Cultural Center in San Rafael, CA. We organized with Anna back and forth over email many times, taking all her helpful advice and suggestions and finalizing our order. These people are nothing but professional, kind, and willing to deal with the neuroses of people like myself planning weddings. The truck arrived, the food was ready, and the guests were knocked off their feet by how delicious and bountiful the wedding feast was. The tapas (especially the large paella pan with the variety of little bites) were incredible served right before our ceremony, and when it came time for the guests to go down to the large paella pans and get served some deliciousness, it was perfect for the fun, informal, but still absolutely delicious experience we wanted to have at our wedding. My dad went down for seconds and talked with Gerard for a bit (This is relevant because my dad is a Bulgarian man who thinks anything not from Bulgaria is pretty much inferior...he hates ALL restaurants and the like). We had the Valenciana which was of course phenomenal and the Squid Ink with Meyer Lemon Aioli which was also profoundly delicious in a different way. There was crispy rice, saucy squishy rice, perfectly cooked seafood, chicken, and also a meat free vegan Paella which our guests raved about as well. Order extra portions, because I guarantee your guests will want more (even though the portions they serve are quite good). All the people on site were super friendly and without this company, our wedding would have been a dramatically different experience. First the food is delicious so that is a big plus. But the actual experience is underwhelming. You wait in a line to order your food then find your own table and you have to get your own water, napkins and silverware. In other words, there is no real service yet the cashier will ask you what percentage tip you would like to leave. I left 15% but in the future if I go back I would leave 10% and consider that generous. If the price point were about two thirds of what it is this would be worth it but for what it costs to dine at Gerard's Paella there are many choices where one can enjoy both good food and full service. read more

My wife and I went to 21st Annual Savor Sonoma Valley wine tasting event this weekend. Lots of people go there to taste wine, but many (like me) also go there for the food which is paired with the wine. I was really impressed with Gerard's Paella who were catering for Imagery Winery. These guys had 2 different paellas going at the same time: one was seafood which was paired with white wine, and the other was chicken paella paired with the reds. I watched the paella masters work their magic starting with fresh vegetables simmering in a delicious chicken broth, later on adding rice (which was perfectly cooked), and seafood including shrimp and calamari which was also done to perfection. The paella was the star of the party at the winery, people just couldn't get enough. They would come up to the chefs to let them know it's the best thing they tasted all day. We were there for the 2 day event, and Imagery Winery was one of the first wineries that we went to. Once I tasted the paellas, my expectations were really high for the rest of the day, and I was hoping that my food experience was going to get topped at the other wineries. I was wrong. For the rest of the day, all I could think about was Gerard and his seafood paella, and it made me really hungry. The other wineries' caterers just couldn't keep up with the paella masters. The next day, I made my wife drive us back to Imagery so we can eat more of that paella. The second day, it was just as delicious. Both my wife and I have experience in the food industry, so I know how hard it is to cook in volume and make it consistently delicious. It seemed like the amount of volume that needed to be produced to feed all the hungry wine connoisseurs didn't make the chefs tremble under pressure, and they kept cranking out the same delicious food over and over. Just returned from a Birthday Party where Gerard catered the meal... and what a delicious meal it was! The paella was slightly spicy, loaded with chicken and shrimp, the rice was moist and some was slightly crispy from the goodness at the bottom of the pan... it was just downright delicious... I couldn't stop eating it! And Gerard is really good people too... I have an allergy to shellfish, and I mentioned that to him, so he made sure that I had a big plate of paella without the shrimp! Thanks Gerard! Everyone at the party was thrilled with the meal, which included appetizers of grilled shrimp and steamed saffron mussels as well. This review is for the chicken and seafood paella I had at Maker's Faire in San Mateo from Gerard's Paella. The line was ridiculously long but it moved, so it wasn't too bad. I loved seeing the giant paella pans that they had to cook massive quantities of paella. It was rather enticing. For $10, I got a heaping plate of paella with one piece of head-on shrimp (extra kudos for leaving the head on) and a chicken thigh. The shrimp and chicken were nicely flavored and not overcooked. However, the paella was mediocre. The rice was mushy. I was expecting more flavor. But, this was at a faire, and if I want good faire food I should really just stick to kettle corn and hot dogs and sausage - things that will withstand cooking in mass quantities. Tried Gerards the first time over the weekend at 2014 Treasure Island Festival. So Good. Ate a plate on both days. Nice transition from small cooking pans to larger cooking pans. Flavor was legit. Rice on point. Ate every morsel. read more

Tried Paella at "Burlingame on the Avenue", and it was really expensive. It had only 4 small shrimps. And the test was not that great.

Tried the paella at BottleRock and it was definitely one of my favorite caterers there. Always happy to find some great paella!

I can echo all the good taste tests of their paella from the 2014 San Francisco Street Food Festival this weekend! Their stand managed to keep up with one of the longest (yet quickest) lines at this festival! I am quite happy with their shrimp and chicken paella. As good as the ones in Spain!!! I had their paella this weekend at the san fran carnival; it was with chicken and shrimp. The meats were so juicy and the rice was perfectly seasoned and parts of the rice were a tiny bit crispy... just like my spanish momma makes it!!! I went there Saturday and had it because i was at the festival and it looked good ( portion was HUGE) and sunday i went to the festival just to get this dish again. read more

I don't know what these people are talking about - not the experience I had for sure at the Eat Real Food Festival. Sure, there were many vendors to choose from, but none like him. He offered a generous portion of great paella for just $5.00 - my dish was filled with chicken, shrimp, mussels and delicious, perfectly-cooked rice. It was FANTASTIC! Plus, he even offered a vegan paella with artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, green beans - very nice. I've been a fan of paella for a long time, and I've tried many paellas in the Bay Area - none compares to his. Even at a festival (where you might expect he'd cut corners) they did not. I watched as they carefully prepared everything from scratch. I've been to other events where the paella has shown up in chafing dishes - ugh. Gerard is top notch in my book. I'd go anywhere he was cooking. Last thing, they had the friendliest staff at the festival - including Gerard himself! read more

We went to the Menlo Park Summerfest, and though, I usually really stay away from food at those venues, this Paella looked really great. I'm happy I tried it. Seasoning was on point, paella was cooked well, and it was really tasty. Big chunks of chicken, a few shrimp and some of the bottom crust. Plus, with $13, really reasonably priced, especially compared to other vendors at the festival. read more
