The service was fine. The food was not good. The cheese spatzele was like a pancake. Never had it cooked this way before. Had a strange spice on it. My goulash consisted of several pieces of beef in a sauce. The fried potatoes were cold and cooked to the consistency of a potato chip. Red cabbage was good. read more

Before exploring the resort areas, my wife and I stopped by this little restaurant on the south end of French Lick. We were able to find free 2-hr parking in front of the building (I believe there is also a public lot across the street). Note that this street is one way north bound, so you need to approach the restaurant from the south or take the next street over to loop around to here. After a small delay, we were greeted by the hostess and taken to a 2-top table in the front dining room. The room is decorated from floor to ceiling with an eclectic mix of German and rustic Indiana items that somehow work together. My wife wasn't adventurous on her choice of lunch: German Cafe House Salad which comes with Black Forest Ham, Eggs, and a garden of veggies on iceberg lettuce. I decided upon the "Zigeunerschnitzel and Kartoffelbrei". The first item is a seasoned/lightly breaded, pan-fried pork loin with a bit of spicy heat and covered with a brown gravy with sliced red and yellow bell peppers. The heat was subtle, but noticeable. The second item was a fluffy mashed potato side topped with a bit of seasoning. No lumps, so it had the texture of instant potatoes, but the flavor was good. The portion sizes were large for lunch, though I managed to finish mine. I should also mention there was a complementary basket of sliced bread with a salted/green onion butter. Good flavor, just not much there in a large basket. Would look better in something smaller or with more slices added. The waitress was pleasant and helped with the pronunciation of some of the longer selections on the menu. I find it easier to point at the menu when trying a language I'm not familiar with. Less chance for error! I didn't try any of their German beer selection since I planned at stopping at a winery later in the day. Hands down best German food I've ever had. The kraut was amazing. It was perfectly cooked and just slightly sweet but not too much. The spatzel needed no help from the excellent gravy. It was so flavorful on its own. Large selection of German beers on draft. I thought it was a little over priced but it was excellent food. The meats are locally raised and blended to the owners specifications by local butchers. The owners are first generation immigrants coming to US about 10 years ago. Walked in to a warm, friendly, fun atmosphere with a lot to see around the space. Was placed in a nice spacious table for our group. Menu was not deep, but with such good options, it was tough to decide... we went with a platter for multiple guests to share, family style. And this was SO GOOD, this was THE WAY to go! There is 2 German sausages, 1 Polish Sausage, 2 large schnitzel, mushroom sauce, tender meat dark sauce, German noodles, German potato salad, red cabbage, sour kraut... ALL SO GOOD that I can't pick a favorite. Served with bread and butter. You can order a second order of bread and butter for a price, but you don't need it, you will have enough food! We also had two kids meals - chicken chunks and bratwurst each served with French freis - good! Service was relatively quick and very friendly. Checked in a couple times to be sure we were doing alright. Forgot to bring up ketchup for a little bit (That's about the worst I can say about it, so not bad!). We are always up fro trying new things. Having had no experience with real German food we thought we'd give this place a shot. (Also, not a lot of options in the area) Our waitress recommended the Grosse Platte so we could try a little bit of everything. It was a good option and gave us a good selection of the things we would have had no idea of otherwise. Our favorite was the breaded port tenderloin And the fries potatoes The food was ok, we can say we tried it and our service was really good The flies, however, were terrible. We visited French Lick for the day to ride Buffalo Trace trail but after driving several hours we decided to get lunch first. I'm a sucker for good German food so why not hit up a place called German Cafe! I couldn't decide if the restaurant was a converted house or was just built to look like one but it was very inviting either way. The interior was covered with various items and memorabilia and come to find out, the owner and cook was from Germany! We had a hard time deciding what to try so we went with the Grosse Platter and tried a little of everything! We weren't disappointed. It was all amazing! Terrible in pretty much every way. We went to the German Cafe with a party of seven. The atmosphere is pretty nice. That's really the only positive thing about this place. The service was not good. Two women took care of us but could not wait to get us out of there. Three different times they came out and said that the menu was wrong, and they did not have part or all of what we ordered. Two menu items said they had salads included. But after we ordered they said the menu was wrong and the items did not come with a salad. But, they went ahead and charged us the full price. The food was terrible. I am a big fan of traditional German food. A few of us ordered spaetzle. It was a pile of noodles with cold melted cheese on top. It was so salty, it was pretty much inedible. The pretzel we ordered was $22 (no that is not a misprint) and we were told it would feed 4. It was a decent re-heated pretzel. It could maybe have fed four people if they were not big eaters, but the $22 price tag is ridiculous. The potato pancakes tasted like McDonalds hash browns but 5x more expensive. The apple sauce with them came from a cheap jar. We were given cocktail napkins at the table for our meals. We did not even get proper sized napkins. We asked for some other napkins or at least some additional cocktail napkins but they never came. We tried ordering a couple different beers. After we ordered the servers came back and said the beer menu was also wrong and they did not have what we ordered. The beer selection was pretty bad anyway, even if they did have everything on the menu. I tried to go to the bathroom and they had two doors labeled as bathrooms but they had old beat-up pieces of paper on the door with huge letters saying, "employees only." Pretty awful. I can honestly say that I have not had a restaurant experience as bad as this one in a long time...maybe ever. I understand something going wrong. We are very easy to please people and I empathize with a restaurant if they have a night where service is off, or perhaps the cook is not 100% on his/her game. But honestly nothing was good. Oh, and lastly, the bill was almost $200. Ridiculous experience. I can't imagine anyone believing this is a decent restaurant. Avoid! read more

Very nice restaurant, and from outside you won't have a good guess of the inside.. the decoration inside is so warm and homey. All kinds of stuff, table lamp, old coffee grinder, etc.. very interesting. We ordered the 2 person platter for 36$, it comes with so many different kind of German food. My husband say it's really authentic, i don't know much about German food, but the pan fried sausage is very good! The red cabbage is too sweet for me, and the German potato salad is a little sweet too. But i like the German fermented cabbage, just like the sour cabbage we have in China.. the fried potato is good, the mushroom gravy is nice.. the pork is very tender.. the only thing is i feel very thirsty when i get back to my hotel room.. that's why i gave a 4 star not 5 star.. i guess that's can't be avoided for restaurant food.. read more

The food here is absolutely wonderful. Service was excellent and having the opportunity to walk in and see the interesting display of various memorabilia from Germany makes you feel like you've stepped into another country away from Indiana. Throughout the restaurant you'll also notice some cuckoo clocks which are really cool, if you like those. This place is super cute! Loved the decor and the place was packed so were happy we got a seat. We both had a beer and although I can't remember what kind, we were both happy. We ordered the combination plate for 2. It included sauerkraut, red cabbage, fried potatoes, German noodles, German potato salad, goulash, 3 different sausages, and pork schnitzel. Everything was very good! Each sausage was different and there was mustard for dipping. The schnitzel was just a bit too thick and tough to cut with a butter knife, but had a good flavor. The goulash was the best! The only thing neither of us liked were the noodles. I think there was so much other good food that I just didn't want to fill up on starches. We are not big people, but we managed to eat the majority of the food because it was so good. There were only 2 servers for the whole restaurant and those girls hustled. They apologized for the wait, but we didn't feel we sat too long. My only recommendation which I think would be cute would be to have the servers wear German style clothing. Very disappointed, I've travelled all the way from Louisville to try this so called German restaurant! I'm from Germany, and let me tell you this has nothing to do with Germany, besides the decor!!! Some red cabbage,raw Spätzle. Some old Gulasch and so called German potato-salad, witch believe me it was not. We told the waitress of course about the burned to crisp Schnitzel, she just said ok I'll tell the cook and left. She brought me a bill with 5% off... I still am trying to figure out what that was for. But she claims that the cooks are from Germany with some local help. That was my first and ultimately the last visit. My wife and I were visiting French Lick for a few days of relaxation and came across the German Cafe this evening. I'm a big fan of ethnic food, and the more authentic, the better. Mom and pop cafes are sought out whenever we travel. Let me say, The German Cafe is a great example of why I go out of my way to find these gems. Great service, great food and great company. We started with a crisp, refreshing Spaten beer and moved onto their Grosse Platte (think sampler of everything delicious in German cuisine). Sausages, jeagerschnitzel, goulash, homemade red cabbage, potato salad, and the list goes on... my wife finished up with the perfect slice of Black Forest cake. All smiles from across the table. This was my first time eating authentic German food and I really enjoyed it. I had Jägerschnitzel and Spaetzle, both were really good. I tried my sister's goulash and it was delicious. My dad loved his sausages. The star of the meal, tho, was the red velvet cheesecake. Three delicious layers - thick, chocolate crust, red velvet cake, and creamy cheesecake - with whipped cream. The beautiful thing of visiting this area of Indiana is you have two excellent, and very different, German restaurants. The German Café and Schnitzelbank in Jasper. The Café's schnitzel option and gravies will frustrate your decision making. The sides are genuine, and the brat and sausage options abound. First walked in and had a strong smell of natural gas and they told us it was sauerkraut. Flies all over the restaurant and 1 in the beer of the people next to us. Ordered pretzel sticks and they were old and warmed up and served with cold cheese sauce. Then they brought the entrees and the schnitzel was cooked probably days ago and warmed up and some kind of nasty gravy was on top. Fried potato's were also cooked days ago and warmed up. Was looking forward to some German food since it's been quite a while and there isn't too many places in Indiana that serves it. The jagerschnitzel was decent as was the goulash and the portions are pretty large but you are paying for it since their prices aren't cheap by any means. The German potato salad was fair but I think the stuff I get at Seymour at the Oktoberfest is better. Since I've made "purple cabbage" at home myself I instantly knew theirs wasn't homemade and pretty sure it was Aunt Nelly's out of a jar since I have bought and eaten that brand before.
