    Before & after, just-finished

Needed an old, broken-down bulkhead (that was barely even attached to the asphalt, mostly just sitting on the ground) replaced. The retaining wall on both sides was also starting to fail, as were some top steps. Of the places I contacted, Gerrior Masonry was the only one that responded. So, caveat here: I don't know if this was an especially busy season or if they're generally this busy. (I'm sure weather played a part, it was unusually rainy for several weeks.) But getting scheduled took several months, and most of that time I wasn't sure how long the wait would be - I was given a date about a week before the work actually got done. That said: I'm very happy with the end result. The person who came out for an estimate gave me a good rundown of what work was needed and why. Once it did get scheduled, work was done very efficiently, it looks great, and they stuck to the price they gave me, even though they needed to install an extra layer of blocks to raise the new bulkhead to the correct height. If you're flexible about scheduling, and you're looking for very clean masonry, definitely recommend their work.

I'm an over 75 year old woman and had my patio done less than a year ago and Joe or the worker or whoever said there would be no more weeds coming through. Well that was less than a year ago and my patio is covered in weeds. Here was the email reply I received "Joe said to use some round up, power wash it and add polysand.  We are not doing that type of work this summer, just to let you know so we wouldn't be able to do it." The funny thing is that's exactly what THEY did last time and that obviously didn't work. Don't tell me "there won't be anymore weeds" and then less than a year later my patio is covered in them and then tell me to do it myself you shouldn't be in business if you can't get it right the first time or at least have the courtesy to fix your mistakes when you or your workers make false claims.

The work putting in our trees.

They were very careful in the yard and Joe was excellent with the little excavator.

Some quoted me fairly high prices for the repair, but Martin Forde offered me the best, and most reasonable cost for the job. During our interview Martin struck me as a competent, and fair mason and he is responsive by email, which are valuable traits in a contractor. We scheduled the job, and he and his team showed up right on time. The first thing I learned is that Forde masonry may not have a full time staff. Martin definitely came out to my job periodically to deliver materials, but the masons who did the work were actually two latinos who seemed to be day laborers. They were competent, and very polite as I asked questions in my broken Spanish, but that makes accountability a little more difficult. That became a problem when I was in the basement with another contractor, and I saw one of the mason repairing a hole that was two withes thick. He was just repairing the outward face that I could see, but leaving a whole in the second layer. I asked him about it, so he dropped some mortar into the hole, a few bricks, and kept on with his repair. Yes, it visually looks fine and I would not have noticed if I were not watching as the hole was getting closed up, but that is not what I expect when I hire a professional mason to repair my walls. My job is done though, and I hopefully will not need masonry help for a while. Most of the issues I had are easily fixed with a little more attention to detail, and oversight, so I would encourage others to give Martin a chance if you need masonry help.

We searched and searched and we found Al at Martignetti. It was a 90 degree summer day, but that did not stop Al from showing and explaining all of our options. If it wasn't for his client service skills, patience and expertise, we would still be going down that rabbit hole. Recently we've needed various materials and a number of granite slabs of four different sizes. They were awaiting one particular size of slab from their supplier, and when it hadn't arrived after several days of waiting, they offered to cut down and edge larger pieces that they had, at no extra charge, and did it for us within an hour. Al is my usual contact, and he's a great person, with a great sense of humor. They're often very busy, with lots of customers and the phones ringing, so be patient. BTW, check out the showroom and the materials displayed and stored all over the yard.
