This Giant grocery remains a hugely depressing experience. It's a zoo, not a clean, modern grocery store. Management doesn't care. Security just stands and does nothing while a homeless guy basically camps out in front of the doors (and last week when it was cold, they let him sit INSIDE on a bench while he pigged out on food given to him!). Also a dude regularly goes around with an empty cart, bothering customers to buy his book of,poetry (?!). I've seen shoplifters just pack up their backpacks with laundry detergent and security does nothing. The outside sidewalks are dark and grimy - anyone heard of pressure spray? Downtown Silver Spring deserves better than this for people who can't afford to shop at Whole Paycheck or Mom's. I've written to Giant Corporate and store management: no one does anything. read more

Giant has many stores throughout the area. This location on EW Hwy is one of the nicer ones. This spacious footprint offers great service and a variety of products. The staff were very friendly. I was able to grab groceries and Rx with ease. I would definitely visit this location more often read more

It's never been a good shopping experience (out of basics like black pepper, tofu, arugula, etc) and always changing the store arrangement so that it's hard to find things. but I can't shop there any more after yesterday's experience. I had to use the "self serve" because there were no cashier's available. the system timed out on me over a dozen times. the clerk would come over and have to correct the system with an exasperated expression that told me I was an idiot for not wanting to work for giant. This was my go to grocery store as it's close to my home, but after dealing with unprofessional and unhelpful Customer Service Manager, Jerome Davis, it's safe to say I will shop for my groceries elsewhere. Shoppers beware. Jerome Davis rudely refused to process a manufacturer's coupon, admitted he didn't actually read the coupon, and told me I was "just mad that I'm not getting my way". He shouldn't be customer facing at all and I feel terribly for his staff that work for a Customer Service Manager with no couth, professionalism, or resolution tenacity. Customer Service really is a dying form. I've already called Corporate to report his reprehensible behavior as I'm sure I'm not the only one he has disrespected and mistreated. Update- I want to add a star as this past visit was a bit better. Some of the renovations are finished and there are welcome improvements like an upgraded seafood and butcher area and updated bakery. The regular meat cases are still rated poor-there is still an odor and the selection is not great. Less rotten meat though. Produce section is much improved. Same weird and shady customers. We witnessed two guys do a grab and dash shoplift! smh!!! Hopefully they will continue to improve. read more

Updating it to four stars. There have been less mess ups with the sale signs compared to a few months ago and the Giant app helps. It's not as nice or high quality as Wegmans or as discounted as Food Lion or Aldi but if you look for sales like we do you do save significantly compared to Safeway which has gone up a lot in recent years or Whole Foods. Our favorite deal is the $4.99 sushi Wednesday deal so my wife usually shops here for us on Wednesdays and it has become our go to store. read more

This Giant location is like all the others. No frills, often low stock of staple house hold items and fresh food. The hot food bar is pretty good. I enjoy grabbing an already prepared meal after a busy work day. The hot food bar and rotisserie chicken is the only plus about this grocery store. The self checkout line is not fast at all. The line is always super long plus the regular checkout lanes are never all open. Be prepared to spend 10 minutes+ just trying to checkout and waiting in line. read more

Yesterday(1/17) I placed an online order for food delivery. It was supposed to have arrived today . It has not come. I called my silver spring Giant on east west to inquire. I had already paid $104 for this. They said they did not do deliveries. They were very rude , hung up on me. I wanted to know where the was coming, they were very rude and hung on me. This review on the Sushi bar Friday deal and the deli bar *. Both areas are clean, but I must say that the quality of the food and taste are not great. The Honey wings I bought tasted more like zingers and they had too much fat on them. The wings also did not have much flavor and I could not get them to re-heat crispy in my air fryer which was a bummer. The sushi friday deal which is buy one get one half off was a good value. The taste and quality of the sushi is very basic and if you into flavor and quality I would not recommend getting it at Giant. It was edible for sushi, and the display case was nice and clean and kept ice cold, but overall I was not impressed by the product for the total price. read more

Giant's delivery service is great (delivery time and drivers are on point). For whomever is picking the groceries however, I have to contact and leave comments when fruits and vegetables are not fresh. Pricing is extremely high and since I have been using them for a bit, their prices do not come down even when on sale. Bell peppers $1.59. Condiment 16oz is $3.69. About their app, I continue to see another customer's items in my past purchases and shopping list. Now that, I do not get. It is not clear if someone is using my telephone number or what. Very frustrating because I use my past purchase to make my next shopping list. I am happy to be a tester for any enhancements to Giant app. read more

I was just looking to pick up some fresh produce but nothing looked fresh. I ended up leaving and going to my regular Giant location up 29! It was definitely busy but looked abandoned here. Atrocious customer service. The self check out machine froze on me and I was told to "just wait". I stood there and waited for literally ten minutes and it was still frozen. No one attempted to assist me during this time. Finally I moved to a new machine and attempted to check out there. Suddenly the clerk on duty pops up and starts lecturing me that it is my fault for freezing the machine because I am trying to use my bonus card. If they are having a systemic problem with the machines like this why not put up signs or warn people instead of ignoring them and yelling at them. Such a terrible store. read more

I live across the street and no matter what day or what time of the day I go I can't ever find what I need. It is the only giant near downtown silver spring, which is a overcrowded downtown city (many many apartment buildings). The good thing is that it has a starbucks inside and it still has the same perks as all other giants. This Giant is always so busy and doesn't always have what I want. It's well stocked enough, but I almost never get everything I came for. It's in a convenient location and the parking isn't completely terrible, but I low key try to limit my time here. My main beef I guess is that the place is dirty. I don't usually go to the checkout line. I don't know if I ever have here, actually. I usually just go to self check out. It can be a little hectic, especially if it's busy. The Giant food store on Old Georgetown road is the worst run grocery store I have ever shopped in. They routinely do not have items that every grocery store carries. The staff is overworked and incompetent, I bought five books of stamps as I was checking out, the cashier only had two and told me to go to customer service to get the others. I had to wait 25 minutes to get those stamps, while all the frozen items in my cart were melting. Just one example of the frustrations of shopping there...go elsewhere. read more

This store is literally a five minute walk from my home. I only go there only and only if I am desperate. The store is not well kept, I would say definitely dirty, the staff is not friendly at all, not helpful. I drive 15 minutes to the Harris Teerer in Bethesda. The difference in the cleanliness and helpfulness of the staff between this giant and Harris teerer is abismal. stay away from this giant it is seriously discussing! Even though this is the closest grocery store to me since the Silver Spring Co-op closed, I still find myself driving to the Safeway up Georgia Ave or Connecticut Ave. I don't really hve an excuse except I think the other two places I mentioned have better sales base on what I buy most often. The lot here is crowded al the time, no lie. I mean. you can find parking, but I like having underground parking that the oher two grocers have. (Still better parking her than at Whole Foods.) This particular Giant is convienient for me if I absoutely need something in a pinch since I drive right past it on my way home from work. They have a nice gormet and organic section near the produce area. I can't say I love their bakery breads as much as the La Brea breads at Harris Teeter. Many complaints here are for the pharmacy, and I did notice a long line there on my last visit. With my insurance however, I am forced to use only CVS. And what happened to the store manager that looked like Adam Levine? read more

I'm reading my own review from 7(!) years ago and laughing. Ok, update: I'm still not a huge fan of this Giant. I briefly tried their pharmacy when it first opened and was not impressed. I've given up on their service deli and haven't used it for years. They HAVE stopped putting so many special displays clustered right around the doors, so it's rarer that I have a problem maneuvering my cart in nowadays. The bathrooms are pretty nasty. It is weirdly hard to find onions that aren't rotten. I do as much shopping as I can at Snyder's now--go there!!--hoo boy, is that experience night and day compared to this Giant. Someday this Giant will get moved/renovated as part of the huge Blair plaza redo. Perhaps Giant will finally wake up and make the new iteration of this store really nice. (Cleaner! More stock! Better lighting and smells! Nicer and more helpful staff!) A girl can dream. read more

Oh the number of times I have been to this Giants in the past few months is just incredible - this being the closest grocery store to where I live. I honestly do not have very many issues with this place - you need to know when exactly to come to make sure you get fresh produce. I aim for Sunday mornings, usually. There are not a lot of folks available to ask questions (typical big grocery chain problem), but when you do manage to hunt down associate they are ALWAYS super knowledgeable about where one can find things like Panko breadcrumbs and mexican avocados :) The place is usually well stocked and I am able to find the stuff I need without having to make rounds of multiple grocery stores. Is this store more expensive than say a Lotte Plaza? Hell yeah! But then the drive to the Silver Spring Lotte is painful, and I am honestly not a fan of that particular lotte. Additionally, their Check it and self Check out lines move fairly quickly and there is almost always someone available when the stupid Need Help light starts flashing. I have never ordered anything from their bakery, but I did notice they have a decent looking hot bar during the day. All in all, no complains - carry your own grocery bags :) read more

Two years ago I would have given this store 4 stars and wondered why others rated it so low. Now, it seems that all large retailers are pushing self checkout. This store has 10 then always has a few cashiers. Seems like the public is fine with the self checkout because the line is always long but moves swiftly enough. But I feel self checkout is, first, taking jobs and so don't like it. Second, it's putting the customers to work. The setup is poor if you have a full cart. Third, the wait in line at the traditional cashier is much longer than it used to be. So, if you get a lot of groceries Giant is worse than it used to be. Given that supermarkets compete with low margins and will lower prices when they find savings, I'd like an economist to explain how they will truly make larger long term profits by pushing self service. read more

Buying meat there is not a good idea.... Almost all the meat on close inspection is discolored on the bottom and close to rotting. I have wasted too much money purchasing meat and bringing it home only to find sour smelling, slimy meat. If you want food poisoning, this is the place to go! The Giant Pick Up system does not work. They claim that things are out of stock and when I immediately go in to the store, I can find the items on the shelves. They often mistakenly forget things or accidentally double up on other items. read more

I do not even want to give The Store one star. I understand it's in the city however it is one of the most ghetto giant food stores I have been to. The store is very unclean, the outside concrete smells like a urinal, the people bringing the carts in practically run you over and then Yell at you, they run short on supplies all the time and what they do have looks picked over and damaged. I really want to like the store because I live in the community however I prefer to drive 20 minutes out of the city to be able to get my groceries in peace and with good customer service. I actually really like this place. You really only have 3 grocery choices in downtown Silver Spring, 1) is this Giant, 2) Safeway - which I don't recommend & 3) Whole Foods. I do like Whole Foods for some things, however Giant normally has what I can't find at Whole Foods. They have a Starbucks stand in the front of the store. Their prices are very reasonable, and they have a pretty good selection. In addition to all of this, they also have 2 redboxes located inside the store which is GREAT!!! I think this may be the only redbox location in DT Silver Spring! (I wonder why they didn't put them outside?!) Anyway, this store also stays open until midnight, which is the latest in DT Silver Spring! I must say that this is definitely one of my favs! :) read more

I think most of the people who shop here simply do for convenience purposes. Let's go through the list of pros and cons: Pros: Parking - Very large parking lot. No parking deck or paid parking required. Hours - Very good hours. They stay open later than most of the supermarkets in the immediate area. Location - Convenient to many of the apartment complexes in the area. Cons: Cleanliness -Absolutely AWFUL smell, specifically near the seafood, butcher department and the public bathrooms. Inventory -Expired food, moldy food. After having to return bad produce/products multiple times, I've learned to thoroughly inspect each item before placing it into the basket. -They are also often out of basic items. One time there were out of both onions AND garlic. Customer Service -This is a very busy store that often has long lines. I understand that working in a supermarket isn't likely a dream job but some of the cashiers are incredibly surly. One cashier actually glared at me when I told her to have a nice day. To echo some of the other reviews, I shop here due to the location and hours. If I didn't live so close, I wouldn't shop here and I don't recommend you shop here if you don't have to either. read more

I hate this store. Sure, it's convenient and it's not terribly dirty or disorganized, but the customer service is just horrible. I'm sympathetic - I used to work at a Giant as a cashier back in college, so I understand how tedious and frustrating it can be. But almost all the people who work here don't seem to know how to bag groceries to save their life. It's really not hard - don't put heavy stuff on top of eggs or bread. Don't overload bags. Don't double-bag everything (doesn't happen so much anymore, thanks to the bag tax). Don't shove everything in one bag when I have two or even three. Don't put bleach and other poisonous things in with food. Keep the frozen stuff together. Bag as you go - I swear it's quicker. This list is getting long, but it's common sense, really. The management really needs to take a good look at their training on this kind of thing. Cashiers are also obviously following a script ("Did you find everything you were looking for today? Do you need help loading your groceries?"), but most seem like they couldn't care less. I don't expect cheeriness, but you can keep a polite tone. There are a few people who are stand-outs, but they're...few. As for products - their produce is OK - not the best but definitely acceptable. I've never had issues with their meat, but I've never used the deli or fish counters. The pharmacy is ridiculously slow, but I think every pharmacy is that way, so they get a pass on that. On a final note, I know this is petty, but they have a sign on the emergency exit door where they spelled "alarm" as "alram." Someone corrected it with sharpie on the door, but they took that off and didn't replace the sign - obviously they went to the trouble of laminating it and were too lazy to fix it. If you're a techie like me, I know you've thought about how to make the grocery store more efficient. Most of the men I know would argue that it is horribly inefficient, forcing you to meander and creating numerous traffic jams as you try to get out of Grandma's way in the much-too-narrow aisles. Not to mention if you walk to the store, your groceries get packed in a hurry at checkout and your bread now looks like it puppy attacked by a kindergarten class (i.e., all the fluff has been hugged out of it). But Giant has a great solution, and that is its handheld scanners. And it is the only store in the Silver Spring area with said magical scanners. Here's how I shop now: 1) Enter store, hit up the scanner kiosk. Enter my phone number or scan my Giant card and the scanner unlocks. 2) Gather food at produce, scanning as I go along. The scanner tells you how much you're spending. Oh, you didn't want to spend $7 on some purple potatoes? No prob. Hit "Remove", scan the item, and return it. 3) Did I mention the scanner tells you how much you're spending? So if you only have $50 for groceries this week, you know you have to put back the cookies. And it records the card savings as you go along. Good for people who hate math. 4) Pack as you shop. This is key for those of us who rely on our legs as the main mode of transportation. Bless their hearts, the grocery story baggers want to be helpful, but they can't pack a bag for people who are walking. I've got to have heavy, square stuff on the bottom, then moderately heavy stuff, then fluffy stuff that cannot be crushed. 5) The Absolute Best Part of the Scanner: Skipping the lines. There is a special "Scan It" aisle, and there is, I swear to you, almost never a line. You just scan the barcode, then your card, and BOOM, pay. Your bags are already packed, no need to mess with any nonsense scanning and frantic packing in line. You are not forced to thumb through "Oprah" or "Southern Living" just to pass the time in line. Not that I've timed it, but basically you can get in and get out in 30 minutes. 30 minutes, I tell you. Bonus: For those of you who walk and would like to avoid walking home, uphill, in the snow, you can catch the free Silver Spring shuttle (the "VanGo") at East West Highway across from the Giant, any weeknight before 7pm. So it's like a double win of efficiency. read more

I moved to SS 1 year ago and used to shop at the Giant in Gaithersburg/MD. There is absolutely NO comparison between the stores. The Silver Spring location is terrible at best. Pros - The store is large and open - great location - plenty of parking Cons - it is dirty - produce is often rotten or non existent - shelves are being refilled during prime hours with many customers shopping - staff unfriendly and untrained - deli counter is untidy and slow with no customer service - Pharmacy is unfriendly and unhelpful - checkout is extremely slow and grumpy - shelves are never fully stocked - the return counter prefers to answer their phones before talking to the customer Let's mention that ridiculous sign on the milk cooler door, stating that there is a organic milk shortage and therefore Giant can't supply organic milk. If they do it is 50-70 cents more expensive the Whole Foods, who never has a organic milk shortage. There is NO organic milk shortage - are you kidding me!!! This store has no customer service, prices for food are high, when asked nobody can or wants to help you. During peak hours Giant keeps the same amount of cashiers open which creates long lines. The supervisors don't seem to be bothered by it as they stand around and watch the turmoil. Shopping at this Giant is extremely unpleasant and I am looking for other grocery stores nearby. I guess Giant is too big to want my money and provide a outstanding shopping experience for customers to return. read more

I refuse to go here unless absolutely necessary. It's right down the street from me, but it's just that much of a pain to shop here. I suppose the name could tip you off, but Giant is a humongous supermarket as supermarkets go. You'll probably walk about 2 miles just wandering around the store trying to find peanut butter (hint: near the bread, in the back of the store). You'll be inundated with choices on every aisle. Frankly, I'm just never in the mood to choose between 20 different kinds of dishwashing detergent. Things to avoid: Their seafood selection (meat, in general, here, is not up to snuff), being confused by the separate "healthy foods" aisle Things to look for: the automatic scanners that you can use while you shop, baking goods/spices, cheese selection Don't let the superstore front fool you - this store is also not very cheap. You can do a lot better at Trader Joe's as far as price goes, and for better quality, check out the TPSS Co-op or Whole Foods. read more
