When the customer is finally served, invariably the refill order has been either lost or separated from its insurance info, so another 15-minute wait is required while one cashier juggles three to five customers at a time. No privacy. Ridiculous! Store: On average, a 10-minute wait in line for the self-checkouts. Food selection is limited compared to nearby rivals. read more

Literally the worst Giant I have been to. I wish there were other grocery stores closer or in the area. It's always a gamble coming to this store because they may be sold out of raw chicken or steak who knows. Fruits and vegetables aren't fresh compared to the other Giants I've been to. Not sure why this location has poor reviews, but I like this Giant. Maybe I'm overjudging it by comparing it to other locations where produce was always poor and staff wasn't friendly, but this Giant has everything I need at good prices and the store crew is always able and willing to assist. The lines move quickly and they have numerous self-checkout lanes. The layout takes getting used to (e.g., there are frozen items on literally both ends of the store instead of in adjacent aisles) but for the most part this is a well-run, well-stocked, well-serviced location. read more

I have been shopping at Giant pretty much my whole life, in various locations around DC, MD, and VA, and this Giant is the worst I have ever seen. I have seen spoiling or moldy produce still on the shelves, products misplaced on shelves and by the wrong price signs, and sometimes they are almost completely out of basic necessities such as eggs. This disorganization and lack of selection makes for a very frustrating shopping trip. The worst part of all this is that by the time you find what you need and are ready to pay, there are never enough check out lanes open and usually a few broken computers at the self check out, resulting in lines that run well into each of the aisles. The store is always really busy, so the crowd can't possibly be a surprise to them. It seems like they are intentionally understaffing the store and are being generally careless about keeping aisles stocked and in good order. read more

This was an awful experience today...this is why I prefer higher end stores like Harris Teeter and Wegmans. The first attendant I asked for help in the dairy aisle, looked at me with disdain when I asked where could I find the cream cheese. During the checkout, the cashier ignored my cold bags and put everything (including cold items) in the regular bags. Lastly, this Giant has personnel standing by the Redbox displays watching customers come in and out of the store. My husband asked him why they had to place live trees at both entrances (my husband is allergic to the pine resin and even the scent of a live tree affects him). This man began to loudly dress down my husband about why should they have to accommodate one customer who has allergies to trees... my husband began to escalate (unfortunately, because that is his nature) as soon as this employee set him off. They could be heard yelling all the way to the back of the store. I was mortified. Least to say, I will be avoiding this store at all cost. read more

There has been enough written already about the awful service, rude staff, and out-of-stock items at this Giant Food - but I want to give everyone a warning about parking there. They have spotters and tow trucks at the ready - if you step off of the property, your car is towed, even if you have shopped at Giant or the CVS. Just stepping off of the property gets you towed. They take your car up to far Rockville; you stand in line (there were 2 other people there when I was there who also had been towed from this Giant); then your car is in a lot about 1/2 mile away! The cost is $158 - pay it or they begin charging you a storage fee every day! What a racket. I put this on our Shepherd Park neighborhood listserv - and was overwhelmed with emails from other people who had also been towed out of this lot - buying something from Giant, then delivering an envelope over to the NOAA Building across the street (10 minutes) for example. Giant may not do the towing (it is Tower Property Management that runs the lot) but they could change the policy to make it more sensible. Fortunately, there are lots of other choices for groceries - I've lived in the neighborhood for 40+ years -- and Giant Foods has seen my last dollar. read more

At times when it is expected that there would be severely large volumes of customers in the store, the staff is terribly unprepared. This includes weekdays between 4pm and 8pm, weekends between 10am and 6pm, and especially football Sundays before 1pm. My wife was at this supermarket earlier this morning, and the store was mobbed with people who looked like they were getting food for football-watching parties. With the Ravens, Redskins, and Eagles all playing at 1pm, you would expect a supermarket to be busy at this time on a Sunday. There were 4 registers open, not including the "scan it" and self-checkout lines. This is unacceptable. Even though there are self-checkout lines, people take longer amounts of time to check out when they have to do it on their own. In a time where people need jobs, Giant should advertise and hire cashiers to have every single line open during busy times. Cold food will spoil, frozen items will melt, and people will be very unhappy. On top of the understaffing problem, the cashiers have no sense of urgency to get people checked out in a timely fashion. Every open line should have a bagger (more jobs that could be provided to people who need them), and items should be scanned quickly. In a busy and densely-populated area like Silver Spring, this way of running a business is horribly inappropriate. read more

Buyers Beware: It's worth driving to any other grocery store to avoid this Giant disappointment. There's multiple issues to note, but among the top are: - extremely long checkout lines even with self checkout. Add at least 15-20 minutes to your visit even if you are just running in to pick up 1-2 items. - expect basic items like rice to be sold out. This store has serious inventory management problems. - when you venture to the back of the store, hold your nose. As you walk past the employees only areas, it smells like sewage. There's either a serious plumbing problem or there is a major issue with their cold storage. It's definitely not what you should smell when you are buying food. - expect some of your food items to be spoiled. Meat products may say they don't expire for a week, but the last time I bought ground beef here, when I got home and opened it that same day, I had to air out my apartment because the smell was so horrible. It had clearly expired already. I filed a complaint on the corporate website on Nov. 1 regarding these same concerns. I received an automated reply that said I would hear back within 7 days. I still haven't received a reply. Clearly, no one running this store or working with consumer affairs at the corporate office is concerned. I just hope you read this first and decide to go anywhere else but here. I'd give negative stars if that was an option. read more

Most visits consist of waiting in long lines. On average I spend about 10-15 minutes in line. Often times, I spend time waiting in a line to be turned away because the cashier is closing their lane. The variety of food is ok. read more

I've been going to this Giant for a few years now and decided recently to take my business elsewhere. Upon calling customer service finally to complain about the lack of customer service, there has been no response from them. The store has a very negative ambiance compared to other Giant stores not far from this one and they are TOTALLY different. Like night and day. I agree with other reviews. If you don't have to go there, go somewhere else. I don't like being harrassed by homeless people for money and getting glaring looks from employees plus ignored by the store manager. We really like this grocery store. Our favorite thing that makes this store so unique are the personal scanners you can use while you shop so that you know how much you're going to spend before you get to the checkout line. Also it greatly reduces your time in line or at the the checkout. The employees are great and helpful. Only wish that Maryland didn't have its county liquor laws set up the way they do. The Giant in Columbia Heights has decent wine and cider selections that I know this Giant would probably carry if it could. read more

Decent selection. Horrible long lines to check out, especially on weekends. Never seem to have baggers even during likely peak times like weekend afternoons. Very unprofessional staff: gossiping about their managers instead of ringing you up, berating customers for not taking a deli ticket (there was no one else waiting), talking about others customers appearances loudly, making sexually explicit jokes, etc. If you're doing self check out and don't have to interact with any of the staff, would probably be 4 stars, but their customer service is that bad. This Giant is huge! Stopped there to just pick up a few things on our way home from the Silver Spring Farmers Market. Had not been in the area since I worked in Silver Spring more years ago than I care to remember. So many new stores and restaurants. There was plenty of parking by the Giant. We use the "Scan It" feature so got our scanner and set out to check off our list. First the produce section. We needed some lettuce, but the water melon was too tempting so into the cart went a container. Even though the store is huge it's well marked and we easily spotted the sign for the meat section at the back of store. Since most Giants have a similar pattern I went in the right direction to find the dog food. While I was studying all of the varieties, husband arrived with paper towels on sale at a good price. Everything scanned and bagged we found a do-it-yourself lane open with no line at all and checked ourselves out in minutes. We will probably come back when we have more time to explore because this Giant is much bigger than the two that are closer to us. The staff was friendly and if the produce section is any indication everything seemed nice and fresh. Also getting in and out by car was simple especially since we now know the "back way". Glad we tried this Giant and will come back again. read more

I dont really get the bad reviews. Its a regular Giant that has a good assortment of goods and a self-checkout that is convenient. Lines go fast. I like their aisle of ethnic food options like chutney etc. convenient to not have to go far for things like this. Only con is that it gets really crowded on weekends. I try to go on off hours since its pretty much across the street or down the street from everywhere Ive lived in Silver Spring. Another pro is that the cat food regularly goes on sale or is already a good price. They recently added seafood fancy feast boxes that are easy to carry. I usually get my cat food from costco because its a tiny bit cheaper per can, though not by much. read more

This Giant clearly has decided it will be the worst store in Silver Spring because one of the grocery stores has to be. A grocery store within walking distance to my apartment is always fabulous. Trying to figure out the best time to go can always be a trick, but that's the case with most grocery stores. Having been in the area for nearly 4 years, I've found that the best time to go is any morning, Friday/Saturday evenings, and basically when the doors open on the weekend or wait until much later. Using the Scan It definitely helps expedite the checkout since they have two lanes dedicated to Scan It costumers, but good luck getting one on a weekend. Like I said, it gets crazy in there. Overall, they have a great selection of groceries and I find that they restock pretty quickly. This will continue to be my go-to grocery store as long as I'm in the area. read more

This giant is a joke. The only good thing is the relatively open parking and they stay open late. But if it's late, there will be only one cash register open maybe two but the lines will be incredibly long and slow. But the worst part is that the cashiers will not help with bagging (and there are never any baggers at night). Not only do they not help with bagging, but they are rude and will start checking out the next person while you are still bagging your items. So your things are mixed on the beltway! I've found that the solution to that is to refuse to pay until my things are packed. For most cashiers that means that they will start helping you as you do their job. But for the not-so-rare-at-this-location terrible cashier like the one I had yesterday, they keep saying the total like five times as if to rush me to pay. In fact the lady in front of me helped the elderly woman who was checking out before her because the cashier refused to put her five items in the bag! Needless to say, holding my tongue with her was a chore. I've had this experience multiple times at this location and the two notorious cashiers who seem to do this are always working late night and sometimes they are working at the same time! I know they probably put the worst cashiers on the night shift but honestly they shouldn't be working at all better yet as my only option. I've only met two truly nice cashiers at this location. The ppl stocking the shelves are much more personable and friendly. read more

PROBLEMATIC SELF CHECKOUT COUNTER (and hard to get staff assistance): this is in my neighborhood so i go here often. there hasn't been a time when i have not had an issue at the checkout counter (self checkout). specially when i use the scanning device which is supposed to make it faster, it always creates problem - 2 items or 20 items. it's unclear if i put my stuff in the bagging area or leave them in the cart.. unclear if i pay for the plastic bags or take as many as i want without paying. they added some counters since last month which is great, but still i see myself and other people needing staff assistance. the worst, staff is not present when you need them (though they are in the isles, not in the counter). read more

I just recently moved to the area and there's a Safeway across the street from my apartment so I always went there for groceries. The giant was behind my apartment but it's a bit of a walk with the metro inbetween so when I discovered giant for the first time I was hooked. I used to live in the Blairs and was literally right across the parking lot from Giant so it was very convenient. Now it has gone through some changes and it looks much nicer and I like the new layout. It also has a starbucks in it which would have been nice when I was live close. I still come back and shop here because it is close to work and the parking lot is easy to find a spot. read more

This Giant is really awesome and I'm sad it doesn't have higher reviews actually. I love this place because of their huge organic and natural foods section that is next to the fresh produce. They have things here that I haven't been able to find in either Trader Joe's or Whole Foods - their selection is THAT good. If they're trying to keep up with other grocery stores - they're doing a great job! On top of that they have their self scanning system where you carry around a hand-held scanner and ring up things as you pick them up. It makes checking out 1000x faster because they have lanes reserved just for those scanners. Plus there's an app now to do it via your phone (both android and iphone, too!) It's becoming my one stop grocery spot that won't break the bank. Definitely coming back here for sure. read more

My family has shopped here for more than 40 years (really!), despite having a Safeway much closer. Everything you want for reasonable prices, and specials all the time. Fruit and vegetables are fresh and good. I prefer to use the self-checkout. Now and then they'll have a glitch, and it can take 5-10 minutes to get help for that. 95%+ of the time, though, they work fine. The cashiers are fast, so they're still a good choice. They keep enough registers open so lines are short, except at peak times -- and then they'll have them all open, so at least they're doing their best. That's a lot better than the aforementioned Safeway. We've used the pharmacy forever too. My one complaint is that they often are short of something. They'll get it in a day or two, but that's a pain when it happens. The staff are always friendly, helpful, and courteous. The one exception was when a pharmacist said something rude, under his breath but audible. I complained, and they immediately had a higher manager call to apologize. One incident in many, many years is pretty good! read more

I dislike shopping at this Giant. It's small, crowded, and they choose to re-stock shelves during busy times which causes traffic jams in the aisles. Going here is all about getting out as quickly as possible. I am regularly disappointed to find that they are out of stock of my favorite yogurt. I do appreciate that they send coupons in the mail since their prices are so high. If you are looking for value and a pleasant shopping experience, this is not the supermarket for you! read more

This has got to be the worst run Giant I have ever been to in my life. There is never enough staff on registers which causes massive, slow moving lines no matter what time you go. I'm talkin 1030pm on a Tuesday you're still gonna be waiting in a long line. Staff can regularly been seen standing around talking to each other, offering no assistance. To top it all off, unless you are one of thier friends, everyone seems annoyed at the fact that they are working. The absolute worst thing about this store is the self check outs. Every. single. time. I have been in this store, there has been an issue with the self check out. There is usually one person who is in charge of addressing the lock out screen that occurs when you've made a mistake in entering something, you've put an item in the "bagging area" incorrectly, or when the system just feels like it. This happens all the time, and sometimes multiple times during check out. The one person in charge of this area is NEVER to be found when you need them and you end up looking like an idiot just looking around for help, all while the line backs up through half the store. It's a shame that this is one of the only grocery stores in the area. Avoid at all costs of possible. read more
