Great place for drinks and seafood. Parking can be tough and the space is small but it's worth the visit. I had the gift horse martini which had a subtle taste of fennel. Lots of local oysters to choose from. Raw scallops with sesame was a treat. Monkfish toast is a good hot snack that you can eat with your hands.

The service was so great! Everything was so so tasty! I don't usually like raw scallops, but this dish was so out of this world. Truly such a special dish. Buttery, unique, delicious. So well balanced. I will dream of this one! The vibes were really cute in the space, super romantic. They're so deserving of their James Beard award!! Next time I'm in town I'll definitely be back!

Fancy Drinks, VERY small curated menu but always delicious, VERY small restaurant... Great date night if things are casual and flexible... You aren't allowed to make a reservation, nor would you expect to at a small bar like this... But after you hear about how fantastic it is, you still might call and try your luck anyways, ha! They are sister-establishments with the much larger and bigger menu next door at Oberlin, where you can make a reservation.

After visiting RISD on their free Sundays, my friend and I were looking for a place to eat, preferably something refreshing and not too heavy. We decided on the Gift Horse and circled around a couple of times to find street parking (which is also free on Sundays). At the time that we went in, all spots were busy, but we were directed to their standing bar area where we could order a drink and hang out while something became available. Literally 2 minutes later, something freed up. I started with their Silver Spring cocktail ($15) which was very good - refreshing and slightly sweet. For food, we ordered a crudo plate ($18) with a side of sourdough bread ($6), followed by oysters ($18), then the lamb burger ($22), and lastly the crispy piri piti fish (MP - $40). The crudo plate was one of our favorites. We enjoyed all the cuts of fish it came with, but our favorite was the yellowfin tuna as it was firm and flavorful. The toppings of olive oil, capers, onions, etc. were the perfect touch. The sourdough was simply toasted and buttered but oh so good. They have a happy hour for oysters from 4-5 PM where they're only $2 instead of $3 but we missed the window by a little. There is a half dozen order minimum so we did two Quonnie, two Great Salt Pond, and two Wild Goose. That's the order in which we ranked them, from best to less best. The Quonnie were smaller, but they were flavorful and the Great Salt Pond were big and meaty. All were very fresh. There are three sauces to choose from, but we went with the GH Fermented Green Chili Hot Sauce. The RI Lamb Burger was incredibly good. It was advertised as a Bulgarian style burger so we asked about the difference between Bulgarian and I guess American and it came down to the spices used. We enjoyed how juicy and well-seasoned the meat was. I loved the contrast between sweet (pepper jelly and fried onions) and salty (feta). The bread seemed homemade; it was light and fluffy and had a healthy amount of sesame seeds. The crispy piri piri fish came out last and it was not what we were expecting. My friend didn't enjoy it as much, but I liked it. The fish was battered for a crispy finish and sat over a piri piri sauce with two rolls, mustard greens, and potatoes. The piri piri sauce was tasty, not too spicy, with a thicker consistency. The rolls seemed like they were made in house; they were slightly buttery and soft. The mustard greens were good. The potatoes were similar to home fries with onions. The staff was very helpful and explained the food after delivering it. Ambiance is good.

A rare five star review. If you love oysters , this is the place. Small quaint vibe playing great music and serving Rhode Islands best oysters . Small menu with great choices we had many different oysters and fresh bread with olive oil. Such a great meal everything was perfect. The oysters are perfectly Shucked and fresh. Service is friendly and professional

Stopped in here on a Monday while visiting Providence for work. It's a cozy little place with a big oyster bar in the center. The oyster bar is impressive and I sat at the bar behind it where I enjoyed watching the gentleman work on shucking. What a great experience. I was very hungry after a long day of traveling so I tried 3 stone crab claws, fish dip, and crispy oysters to start. The crab was okay, they were smaller than expected and didn't have much meat. The fish dip is phenomenal with unique chips unlike anything I've ever had. The crispy oysters were very flavorful and very tasty. I finished this amazing meal with a scallop roll that came on a pillowy toasted bun. It was excellent and satisfying.

What a sweet little spot! The freshest , most plump oysters I've had in a long time- love the staff, ambience and the food! The fries are crisp and seasoned to perfection and the drinks are expertly crafted. I highly recommend this beautiful, intimate spot and I can't wait to try more of their brilliant food!

Had a very nice dinner at this awesome spot. The staff was so nice and accommodating! You absolutely have to get the scallop roll and fresh oysters when you visit. Their seasoned fries pair well with the kimchi mayo. Our favorite oysters were aquidneck cups which were really crisp and sweet.

Delicious, fresh and plump oysters with tasty, well-seasoned fries and a nice cold beer- what more is there to say? Friendly service in a cozy atmosphere! Would definitely recommend sitting at the bar for some freshly shucked oysters and clams- they also have great cocktails if that's your thing. Would love to go back and try more of their food. *oysters are $2 during happy hour (4-5pm), not a bad deal considering the quality!

We walked in on a Thursday around 5pm and the place was already bumping, with almost all of the seats taken. Luckily, we were able to sit right away and didn't have to wait at this tiny restaurant that does not take reservations. It's really cute in here, decorated minimally, and very modern. Most of the space is taken up by the oyster bar, so it's a huge focal point. You can sit around this bar or one of the outer tables. It's a bit tight in here but it's worth it. The service is incredible, with super friendly people. I will admit I wasn't a fan of our server, he seemed to not like us and made me feel weird, like he was judging us and super didn't care for us, but everyone else was spectacular. I appreciated that they clean the table while you're sitting there before dessert or the check. This is a touch lost by a lot of modern restaurants and I'm glad they still do it here. The food and drink here is amazing. It's seasonal so the menu seems to change a lot. Everything we ate was top notch, prepared beautifully and absolutely delicious. Of course, the oysters and the accompanying sauces were fantastic but the thing I'll think about for quite some time, the thing that is making my mouth water right this moment? The sugar kelp salad. I considered ordering another bowl, it was that good. The only thing that I didn't like was one of the desserts but I'm super picky about desserts, so I'll let that pass.

A chic, modern seafood restaurant with a variety of raw and hot selections. Lots of oysters to choose from, and most of them are local from RI. Our knowledgeable server helped recommend the types that we'd like, as they knew the specifics about each type of oyster. $2 for happy hour is a deal!! Another must‑try dish is the raw scallops. Not only is it beautifully plated, the taste is intricate with the sesame oil mixed with fresh raw scallops. Btw, they have sake on tap!

    Mikaela L.

AMAZING, as always. The drinks are innovative and delicious. The seafood is fresh and light. The service is always impeccable. The space is beautiful and welcoming. You really can't go wrong. The oysters are a must have; I always decide how many I want and ask the server for suggestions on which ones to get. Some other favorites are the crudo plate, the smoked fish dip, and the scallop roll! The drinks are also great; there's a wide variety so my suggestion is to pick what you find the most interesting!

I tried Gift Horse during Providence Restaurant Week and was really pleasantly surprised. I went in with high expectations after it was announced as a James Beard award winner, and somehow it lived up to them--which is no small feat. It's a small restaurant, so I'd recommend going with a small group or, if you have six people, reserving their one large table. Date night at the bar is perfect. Best chance at a table is right when they open at 5pm, but if you don't get in immediately, there's cute shopping nearby to kill some time. Food-wise, everything we had was fantastic. The raw scallops were the standout--amazing flavor, texture, and freshness. My girlfriend, who normally doesn't even like seafood, loved them. The menu changes often based on what's seasonal, but they always have a fantastic oyster selection. I'm personally not an oyster fan, but my friends who are think this is the best spot for variety and freshness. Dessert was well-balanced and delicious, and the drinks were strong and flavorful. The staff gave great recommendations. It is a bit pricey, and portions are on the smaller side, so you might get hungry later--but the quality makes it worth it. Overall, one of the best seafood spots Providence has to offer. I'd highly recommend it to any seafood lover.

My friend knows much more about wine than I do, so he was the decision maker for our wine choices and we ordered a 1/2 bottle of red which we both found to be very delicious. Of course, we had to try some food too and the small bites menu was perfect with something to satisfy nearly every taste. We opted for the meat charcuterie, and it was beautifully presented with enough for the two of us to share. There is also a cheese charcuterie on the menu, but unfortunately there is not an option for a combined meat and cheese plate. We sat, sipped, and tasted for a while and never felt rushed. The atmosphere was so comfortable and we'll definitely consider going back here again.

I can browse a liquor store & pick out a bottle that exactly fits my preferences, my mood, & my budget. I can bring it home & uncork the wine, checking the cork for freshness. I can pull out my special glassware & pour myself a glass of wine & enjoy it on my own couch. So why go out to a wine bar, if not for the wine? For me, it's for the ambience & the experience. Both of those things at Providence Wine Bar were lacking. The lights were too bright (overhead & fluorescent) & the music was too loud (& just bad). The employees seemed both bored & nervous, with not much to do to occupy themselves. I was one of the only people in the bar, so I felt like I was under scrutiny - I'm certain this wasn't intentional but it was unfortunately how it came across. I brought a book but couldn't focus because of the lights & the music. I even caught myself with my fingers in my ears, trying to muffle the sounds of 2010s hyper pop. I have nothing against 2010s hyperpop, it's just that there's a time & place for everything, & maybe that isn't at a wine bar at 8 PM on a Wednesday. I just wanted to be done with my glass of wine so that I could leave. All of that being said, I wish them the best. It seems like they need a good manager's touch.

Chef Ben Sukle has received many accolades including being a James Beard Finalist so I knew we were in for a treat. Everything we ordered was so fresh, had a farm-to-table vibe, and felt very intentional. 3 different dishes had 3 different types of olive oil - that's impressive! I was blown away by the Red Shrimp Quasi Crudo. They were slightly sweet, perfectly cooked with a delicate snap, and I still got some of the roasted/grilled flavor. The Raw Scallops were so simple yet so exquisite. This is a must order along with anything on their crudo menu! The Carrot & Mascarpone Anolini was such a unique pasta and was perfectly balanced and delicious. And definitely leave room for dessert because you can't leave here without trying the Wood-Roasted Basque-Style Cheesecake. It's so creamy, borderline custardy, with a beautiful char on top and the delicate blueberries and olive oil that paired so well together. They are really using their wood-fire oven to the max and I'm here for it. What an exceptional meal; highly recommend.

My pieces were tasty but a bit fatty (hard to chew). I had the eggplant ravioli which was very rich and tasty ($28) - but so heavily sauced it was hard to tell what was what. The less good parts: the cheap wood chairs are too uncomfortable to sit on very long (I moved to the banquette next to my partner). The food is overpriced. It really needed something with it - bread, potatoes, vegetables, anything. The pork came with a few bitter leaves of a salad. I have a small appetite in general - I usually take home half my food anywhere I go. I looked at the food and said "we are going to have to go to IHOP later" because it was a light snack. The only bread available cost $12. Maybe it's amazing but I just couldn't bring myself to pay $12 for bread on principle. The food took awhile to arrive. Long enough for the server to tell us she was leaving for the night and to get up and order two drinks directly from the bar myself. The servers were nice in a way that felt somewhat forced. We are finding someplace else for dessert. I really liked my espresso martini, and that was within the price range I would expect ($13).

The welcome aperitif was a great lil' treat to kick the night off with. We were given a mini charcuterie selection to keep us busy until the main event, which began about 20 minutes after we arrived. This sauce paired perfectly with the bread served before the meal. Pizza with Sweet Corn & Spicy Oil: In Providence, you absolutely must try grilled pizza. The waiter recommended this one, saying it was his favorite. It was the first time I'd ever had a pizza like this. The crust was thin and light, with noticeable charring, and a slightly crispy texture, which inexplicably reminded me of the Indian roti that I always had at Cantonese restaurants when I was a child. The lighting is perfect for a romantic night out and the view of the Providence River right over your shoulder. We made our own board: Umbriaco di Raboso "Drunken Cow" - amazing cheese, very high quality, sharp, not over powering. Definitely get it! Provolone - sharp very good quality provolone cheese Proscuitto di San Daniele - sliced very thin, soft and flavorful. I was very pleased with the portion size and the flavor. A must have! Spicy Olives - assorted olives with a spicy olive oil. All of the olives were fantastic and there definitely was a good kick from the spice. They threw in the pickles, jams, nuts and honey, all were fantastic. I really liked the blueberry jam. The warm tapas came out at all different times. Fried Bolognese olives - Although these were unique and delicious, I would skip these next time. The Bolognese is just a pinch on the inside of the olive. It would be a game changer if there was a side of Bolognese sauce to dip them in instead. Eggplant - Definitely a must order. Super simple sauce packed with flavor and the buffalo mozzarella is to die for. The pork belly is also a must order. Tons of flavor and not a lot of fat, which surprised me. It was a good sized portion too. Now of the the pizza...we ordered Pizza Salumi. Very thin dough, wood fired for the flavor and the crisp. There is a good amount of sauce, which can make the crust floppy, but it's so worth it! The flavor of the sauce is so good. All fresh and top quality ingredients. The soppressata was perfect, taking this pizza to the next the level. It was cut super thin, as it should, and gave the pizza the flavor a margarita is missing. It would be tough not to order this next time. So just as we should have been walking out of the door because we were so full, we had the duck and the wood fired NY strip to split among the three of us. The duck - The duck dish came with the two legs so it was the dark meat with crispy skin. The duck was flavorful, moist, tender, and had some sort of apple based sauce to accompany it. The mashed potatoes were great and the Gorgonzola chunks were a treat, especially while sipping the sangiovese/cab red wine blend that we ordered for the table. The NY Strip was my favorite. The steak was tender and came with the flavor from that wood fired grill. The sauce was so good that I dipped every piece in it, trying to reserve some for the mashed potatoes. I ordered the steak medium rare + and it came out just how I wanted it. We ordered the lemon tart for my mom's birthday dessert. I would skip the dessert next time, but I always skip dessert. My mother loved it...very fresh and vibrant. I would have to say that Bacaro is my favorite RI restaurant, especially for a special night out. It is also a perfect spot to go and grab a snack or two with friends after work with a drink. It is affordable as you want and can find high end alternatives as well. The bottle of wine was $48 and you couldn't have asked for a better pairing with all of the food. We also ordered an after dinner cocktail, called the Call to Italy...very refreshing for a digestive type cocktail.
