Was back in town for the holidays and had to finally check out Gift Horse after hearing some really promising things. The restaurant is cozy and inviting, not too spacious but it felt homey, especially on a freezing cold January night. Service was equally warm and hospitable, answering any questions we had. With so many options, we ended up going with "The King Tide" seafood tower, and it was such a solid move. The 12 oysters (4 each of 3 different types) were all so fresh, massive, and briney - just how I like them. The raw bay scallops, littlenecks, and mussels were equally delicious. The standouts were the scallop crudo and the chilled 1/2 lobster served with a delicious roe mayo. It's been a long while since I've remotely been excited about a place from witnessing and ordering from a well thought-out menu, experiencing stellar service, and a fine culinary touch on every aspect of the food served. Here, it happened and it broke the writer's block. It was one of those days that I just felt a need to drive somewhere and get out of town. I've never been to Rhode Island so I just googled popular restaurants as I began my drive south. As one in the culinary industry, it is a professional habit to notice the finer details (as I would also expect of any critic) and here I found myself repeatedly smiling. Gift Horse as a name for a raw bar already beckoned many questions (which were later answered and gave further understanding to the culinary mastermind behind all of this) and their relatively tiny menu offered culinary uppercuts to the palate JUST by reading it. The words used expressed the mind of the chef behind all of it. I was already guessing her thought process and expression (once again, confirmed later by the amazing staff that took the time to discuss a great deal of who they were to me). Even the design of the restaurant spoke volumes of their thought process. Geez, I'm just going to say that the restroom was a complete LSD trip... All these words said, I'll keep it simple. The food was impeccable and utterly ignited the palate. Every bite was a savory fresh finish. But what highlighted the night above everything else were the oysters. It helps to be in direct partnership with the farms instead of going through a middleman (once again confirmed by staff). I don't usually order another tray of oysters as a dessert but it happened here. I've never had RI oysters before (having always personally preferred Washington or Louisiana oysters) but they were plump, flavorful, and had more brine liquid this night than I've had my whole culinary and foodie career. Kudos for getting the RI dining scene recognized. Nominated for a James Beard award for "Best new restaurant in the northeast". From Ben Sukle of Birch and Oberlin fame and other J&W alums: "Seafood Comfort Food Restaurant with South Korean Influences". 6 months old; evidently, they have a strong PR machine... We made the 1-hour drive on a Friday and since no reservations - got there about 6 PM after failing to find street parking and paying $20 at a nearby lot. The space is nicely done; service is great. We had 2 cocktails ($15 each). Every restaurant you go to have their "signature cocktails" (usually 4 - 8) by a "mixologist" and rarely do we say "wow" or "I'll try to make something like this at home...". These were nothing special and the one drink ("reef keeper") was minimalist in size. Maybe a white wine or beer with the oysters next time. We ordered 2 each of 6 different RI oysters (of 8 available) at $3 each plus charge for sauces (see below!). They are well presented so you know what oyster you are tasting - clearly the highlight of our meal. Entrees were lamb burger ($18) and lobster bisque ($24). There were a number of Korean dishes but none caught our attention on a first visit. The lamb burger ("Bulgarian style") was a winner but note may be too "spicy hot" for some and then overloaded with fried onions (suggest less or adding a pickle or one piece of lettuce). Lobster bisque also tasty. 4 slices of "side griddled sourdough" ($6) overpriced. Food 4/5 (mainly on the oysters) Service 5/5 Value 3/5 (average) Cleanliness 5/5 Noise 3/5 (average for such a space) Décor 5/5 Damages for two with tip was $160. Would I go back? Not until they have reservations or we are headed to a show and can just drop by or if we have out-of-state visitors. Bristol Oyster House is 30 minutes closer, takes reservations, always carries 6 RI or MA oysters (not 8 as here but I expect that number fluctuates weekly), and they have a menu that is not as heavily seafood oriented. Why not 5 stars? First time. Rarely give 5 stars unless spectacular. Cocktail sauces - 1 oz. in a paper cup at $1 each (kimchi mignonette, green hot sauce (not hot!), and cocktail) - wtf! Recommend? Yes - all these new spots deserve a visit and it may become your "favorite". Trendy. Concerns. I am not a J&W restaurant economist but with at least 8 staff for about a 40-seat restaurant - they better count on consistent heavy traffic with sales of much alcohol. When we got there it was at most ¼ full, when we left after 7 PM - maybe ¾ full - on a Friday night with not terrible weather soon after the James Beard nomination. Or maybe it is a loss leader for Oberlin (drop by first for cocktails and oysters) or a passion project to build brand. Recommend they take reservations (or having folks show up and it is "full" creates more buzz?), don't charge for sauces, and install a coat rack up front (everyone was sitting on their coats or draped over their chair; diner next to me on our way out said "there are racks in the back" (why didn't the hostess tell us?)). read more

They asked if we wanted to try to fit in a small high top area for a group of us 4. We attempted it but it was quite tight. I absolutely love Oberlin, so I was super excited when I found out their team was going to open a seafood-focused restaurant. Their menu is South Korean inspired. I tried: Raw Scallops, Shio Kombu, Sesame, Parsley, Lemon: great combination of flavors with the saltiness from the shio kombu playing well with the citrus and the more earthy sesame. Still like Oberlin's raw scallops dish (with Cherry leaf mayo, sesame and radish) more though Warmed Buttered & Smoked Scallop Roll, green beans, split-top brioche: a more substantial dish that highlights the savoriness of scallops more than the dish above. As always, the bread from this team always delights Crudo Plate, 3 Raw Fish, Herb Capers, Onion, Arbequina Olive Oil: the selection of raw fish changes by the season, but I like the variety that this dish allows compared to at Oberlin where you have to order the fish individually unless you get the combination platter I'm tried a castella based dessert that came with rice puffs in a teacup that was alright, but similar with Oberlin, I think their food is much better than their dessert offerings. I want to come back to try the striped bass with matsutake and the crispy whole fish that both came out to the table next to me and looked fantastic. In a world where everyone is chasing the same core customer base, it is unusual to find a restaurant with quite so distinct a menu and vibe. Gift Horse starts with an extraordinary raw bar, but really shined in the sophistication and attention to detail that went into its dish composition. The four dishes we had were all completely unique, completely unlike one another, and completely worth lingering over. They worked with flavor, texture, and heat. Favorites included the fried rice cakes, smoked fish, and sugar kelp salad, but I think we would order new dishes before retrying anyway, and let ourselves be surprised again. The cocktails were very good, with a drinks menu that had something for everyone. If there was a weakest course, it was dessert, but I finished every bite of my strawberry tart. Service was friendly and attentive, and the staff was helpful when it came to making choices. On the whole, this was an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable meal, and we hope to get back sometime. read more

Another amazing meal at Gift Horse. We live in LA and only visit RI once or twice a year during the holidays. Last year we came in after walking around on a whim, and had an excellent meal with perfect service. This year, we were extremely excited to return. It lived up to our expectations completely- we had the seafood tower, the tuna in cabbage, kelp salad, what felt like all of the cocktails, a superb sake, and the special dessert Yule log. Everything was crazy good. And they even made sure I could eat the scallop roll despite my issues with cilantro. We love the fusion of flavors and even living in LA where you can try every combinations of cuisine, Gift Horse has a singular and wonderful point of view. Aside from the food, what also makes Gift Horse 100% worth it is the impeccable service. We were offered extra nori chips immediately, our water glasses were attentively refilled, our servers checked our hunger and alcohol levels as needed, but also unobtrusively. Shout out to our main server Max, we'd love to sit in your section anytime. The oysters are laid out by the bar, which is fun to see. We ordered the crudo plate, which was good as always. Our entrees were both new choices, since the menu often adds items seasonally, so we wanted to try something different. The lamb burger was good, though perhaps less saucy than expected. We came here after dinner for some drinks and small plates and it was definitely a unique experience. The restaurant was quite chilly -- if you ask, they'll give you a blanket (we were sitting right where the AC was blasting). Service and ambience were good. We got a whiskey sour sort of drink which was very good -- great flavor and strength. I would be down to try their other cocktails. The Korean seafood pancake was very interesting. It was extremely crunchy with minimal batter. It was topped with a intensely savory dry kimchi topping which was the best part of the dish -- the pancake didn't have much flavor on its own, and the seafood also wasn't particularly great. We also got a smoked fish dip which came with deep fried tempura seaweed. The crunchy seaweed crisps were definitely my favorite part of the dish. The dip was decent and quite creamy. Lastly, we got a dozen oysters. They were quite good and the sauce options ($1 each) were very interesting. It was my first time having kimchi juice with oysters. While it was a fun experience, I don't know if kimchi is the best pairing. Their kimchi juice is more savory and umami than sour, so with oysters it's just umami on top of umami/fishiness, rather than providing a flavor contrast to the oysters. The green hot sauce had a bit of sourness and spiciness, which I think provided a better contrast to the oysters. Gift Horse was definitely unlike any restaurant I've been to before. Started with the crudo plate followed by the lamb burger and of course a side of fries. Everything has been absolutely incredible. The flavors are a delight on the palette. I don't know what kind of magic dust they're using on the fries, but they are a must order item! The gifthorse martini started off my evening and I couldn't have been happier. I have been looking forward to trying Gift Horse for months and I finally decided to meet up with a friend there for restaurant week. One of use ordered off the restaurant week menu and the other ordered from the regular menu. We ended up splitting everything, but I have mixed feelings about the place. So I'll start with the food first: -The service and ambience were great -My friend said the beef bulgogi burger was the best burger she has ever had. It truly was delicious. The disappointing part is that this burger was only on the restaurant week menu, so I don't think it can be ordered if we were to return when it is not restaurant week. If the owners of the restaurant are reading this, you should definitely add this to your regular menu. -The cabbage savoy dish had a little kick and was amazing. Super interesting textures and flavors that went really well together. -The chocolate ice cream with marshmallow and potato chip was more like ice cream with fluff and then a homemade salty pastry on top. It was absolutely devine and I could've eaten 5 more of them. Now for the bad, which is why I took 2 stars off: -We split 18 oysters, with a kimchi mignonette. I prefer a traditional, vinegar-based mignonette, but it was still good. We got 2 of each oyster so we could each try the oysters from the different areas. I ended up having a bad oyster, which I know is the risk you take when eating a raw bar. I've eaten hundreds of oysters and have never had a bad one until then. I knew as soon as I ate it, that it was going to make me sick. I asked my friend to have the oyster from the same area, hoping that maybe all oysters from this area tasted bad. She said it tasted fine. I ended up with food poisoning and was very ill. -The seafood pajeon was inedible. My friend and I both love seafood, but it was so extremely fishy that neither of us could stomach it. The dressing and the microgreens on top of the pajeon was really good. We picked off the greens and left the pajeon. -We ordered the pickles which were normal pickled cucumbers, pickled green strawberries, and picked romanesco. They were all really delicious, but the portion was pretty small. Overall, I enjoyed our dinner. It was just so strange for two people who are not picky eaters to both be unable to eat something. Also, we thoroughly enjoyed everything else we ordered, so I'm very conflicted. We started off our dinner with 2 of everything on the raw bar menu and also tried the Kimchi Mignonette, Cocktail Sauce, and GH Fermented Green Chili Hot Sauce. The oysters were super fresh and it was a new experience to try oysters with sauces that weren't just cocktail sauce. I really enjoyed the Kimchi Mignonette with the oysters. The Crudo Plate came out with the oysters. It came with 3 different types of fish but it was difficult to tell them apart. Despite that, it was my favorite dish of the night. A great addition to the Providence restaurant scene! We arrived at 5:30 on a Monday night since they do not take reservations and got quickly got a seat at the bat with an excellent view of the raw bar. Our server informed us of the specials for the nights and gave us the restaurant week menu but we opted to forego that. We chose a selection of their oysters, all from RI, to begin our meal. It was accompanied by their kimchi mignonette, green chile sauce and cocktail sauce- all three paired superbly with the delicious oysters. Next up we tried the crudo that included three types of fish in a pool of olive oil and topped with capers and res onion. The freshness of the fish and olive oil were a perfect match, I could've eaten that all night. We ordered more oysters but this time they were fried and served with cocktail sauce and horseradish, a great bite. We also received the monkfish toast at the same time and it was reminiscent of shrimp toast, the monkfish was creamy and the texture of the toasted bread was a great contrast with the bouncy monkfish paste. This was accompanied by a piri piri sauce that was so good that we kept it for the next dish. The finale was a crispy whole fish ssam and it happened to be a fluke on the night that we went. The presentation was spectacular, served with rice, a bed of leafy greens, and sauces and pickles. It was a lot of fun dissecting the fish and building wraps with all the accompaniments. The fish was fried perfectly and the meat was flaky and moist. We were stuffed after finishing everything that was placed in front of us and there were a lot of memorable flavors. The restaurant had filled up while we were entranced by our meal and there wasnt an empty seat by the time we left after 7:30. I came here for a date night dinner and absolutely loved our time at Gift Horse! We really took our time getting through the menu, so I'll go through it piece by piece. Crudo: The crudo is where Gift Horse really shines. The oysters were all fresh, properly cleaned (no sand!), sweet, and light; just the way I like them. I really enjoyed the watch hill oysters, but the aquidnecks were a close second. We also thought that the scallop crudo was OUT OF THIS WORLD good; I could keep eating that by the bucket load. The chilled lobster was also very good, and the mayo that they had created to go along with it was addicting. Hot: We also got the scallop roll, which was also extremely good. The scallops were not overcooked, and roll was really well balanced with the other flavors. We also got the lamb burger and the pajeon. While everything was really good (and the lamb burger and the pajeon were quite filling and could have been a meal on their own), I think that Gift Horse really shines mostly in their crudo and chilled section. The hot food was great, but not quite as mind-blowing (but that's a high bar to clear!) Dessert: We got the asian pear sorbet with peanut crumble and mint. While it was a super refreshing, light, not too sweet, and lovely dessert, for some reason the proportion of peanut crumble was sometimes too much and felt like it really overpowered the delicate flavors of the mint and asian pear sorbet. It was a good dessert and we thought each ingredient was fresh and delicious, don't get me wrong, but I think with how mind-blowingly amazing everything else was, it felt a little off-balanced for my tastes. Drinks: I got the chameleon of the sea and my partner got one of the sakes. Both were great, but were a little less memorable compared to how good the crudo and chilled plates were. Service: Our servers were lovely and very friendly. It was a little busy during happy hour and could take a little while to flag someone down, but that was no fault of theirs and just a testament to how many people love this place! Ambiance: The ambiance is spectacular. I'm normally not a big Ambiance-optimizing person, but the trendy and colorful decor as well as the way the bar is set up to view the oysters available is so much fun! Just tremendous. I was thrilled to score a reservation for Valentine's Day, especially given their recent award recognition. It was buzzing and cute!! I think there are still some seating kinks to work out, but the far lefthand side of the bar is the place to be for sure -- a little more people-watching (the guy next to us insisted he knew the owner...) and a little less foot traffic. Each better than the last and all played nicely -- burnt onion dijonnaise, kimchi mignonette, fermented green hot sauce, and a wildly flavorful mustard were perfect. Sole regret, not ordering fries to soak the rest up. Drinks were clever and strong -- The Stingray, Tritoness, and Gift Horse Martini were all appropriately briny and lovely, although I had hoped the caviar would be served in the martini out of morbid curiosity. Still a delicious bump! Tremendous dessert program -- a potato chip pizelle with creamy smoky marshmallow cream atop chocolate ice cream that tastes like it was made by Big Feeling and an outstanding cranberry roll cake with quince agrodolce. Awesome selection of 11 varieties of local RI oysters. Trust me, order a dozen per person. I had: Walrus & Carpenter 'Dutchies', Trims Pond Great Salt Ponds; Quonnie Sirens; Wild Goose Oysters. All were great, but the Sirens were epic -- iron mineral tang, but tender, plump, savory. The Fried Pajeon, Clam, Mussel, Green Garlic, Kimchi (an original take on traditional crispy fried seafood and scallion pancake) was a perfect bookend. I recommend the draft Brooklyn(!) Gift Horse is a pure seafood play. If you are at least open to seafood, you will have an amazing experience. We had a large group and tried a bunch of dishes. The oysters on the half shell were fresh and delicious. The crudo was as well. The scallop roll is on a tasty brioche and full of perfectly cooked scallops. The monk fish toast had a pate feel with lots of umami. The kelp salad was a wee bit too spicy for my taste but very good and fresh. The restaurant is small and casual. We had the one large table in the corner max 8 people. Our server was friendly, knew the menu, and made good recommendations. I have eaten several restaurants high on the 50 Best in the World list and Gift Horse meets that standard. read more

Nice oyster menu so we tried a large variety. Cocktails were perfect to go with the raw bar. Also tried the fried pickled onions (crispy and nicely flavored), smoked fish dip (so interesting with the nori chips), and scallop roll (great flavors with scallop pieces). The pumpkin tempura was good but the tempura was soggy. Small seating area but a good experience and I would return. read more
