I was so excited to eat at GIHON because I love Ethiopian food and DC, where I'm from, has some of the best Ethiopian restaurants! Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed by the doro wat. It had WAY TOO MUCH SALT. The butter and berbere flavors were still there, but it was masked by all of the salt. However, the green beans and carrots were absolutely delicious. The waitress said that the recipe is her grandmother's and you can tell why it's being shared with restaurant-goers. So flavorful and perfectly balanced! I'll still come back, but I think that I'll get the vegan platter instead. It seems like their veggies are pretty great!

Great food!! Everything was so flavorful. We had the vegan platter, lentil Sambusa and the Shekla Shiro with refills of injera. We also tried the Iced Mint Green tea (which I found to sweet) and the Ethiopian Spices tea over ice (which I loved) We will definitely be back, I did learn that they have buffet every other Friday so, that's a plus!

San Diego has some amazing Ethiopian resturants, but overall this is probably tied as my favorite. The vegan combo platter has several more veggie dishes included than most others places- it always comes with the 6 or so veggies listed on the menu (including an eggplant wot!), but the last few times we've gone we got an additional sampling of a few daily veggies (the smaller takeout box in our pic). In it, has been a magical red colored garlicy potato (?) dish and an aoili-like tasty side-theyre incredible. Shiro is my favorite Ethiopian dish, and I would say this one from Gihon is not my favorite, but it's definitely good- it's much saltier than I personally prefer. The lentil sambusas are not be missed! Also appreciate how generous they are with the injera. Covid precautions were great- 100% masks; very easy, clean, outdoor pickup and bill signing for our takeout.

Covid take-out was seamless (called at 11:50am for a 12:20pm pick up). When I arrive, the street parking in front of the restaurant was all taken and there were a few people waiting for their orders. I parked around the block and call to let them know I was waiting there. They called me when my food was ready and brought it straight out to my car as I pulled up. I ordered the meat combo (beef, lamb, chicken with beet and collard green sides), plus shiro. Everything was extremely well packed! I love this place for their amazing clean food and friendly staff. Please support them!

Amazing Ethiopian food in the San Diego area. The place has been in business for over 20 years and recently returned to this location. It isn't that big of a place, but that adds to the intimacy. Be on the lookout when your drive up. Everything was delicious. Started off with the sambusas (which I rarely go with, but their sauce was amazing), and followed things up with the veggie platter and lamb tibs. We also got the fish, which was seasoned perfectly. For those unfamiliar with Ethiopian food... best bet is to get the veggie sampler and a meat dish you prefer. Family style and you get to eat with your hands. It's more than a meal... it's an experience. Our server was extremely friendly and conversed with us about the options. At the time we went, they didn't yet have their liquor license... but that shouldn't stop you from having a great time. Stop by and enjoy.

Couldn't decide on what to get so Mercy the owner/cook made us a family plate to share. Prime beef, beets and potatoes, eggplant, carrots and green beans, collard greens, spicy lentils, cabbage...SOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!!! She also mentioned that there is a buffet ever 4th Friday of the month!!!! Love love this place! Can't wait to come back!!!

Harar is now under original ownership and has renamed itself as Gihon. The tenant prior did a fantastic job in regards to the quality of the food and I'm very glad that the rebirth of this place did not disappoint. Gihon does look aesthetically more pleasing but my ratings are never about decor or service. It's strictly based on what's coming out of the kitchen. The new menu offers some items not previously available like tofu items. I ordered the veggie combo, shiro, and tofu. The shiro was amazeballs. The tofu was as expected, like tofu, and shouldn't be in Ethiopian food. The veggie combo had a salad, cabbage, spinach, lentils, and chickpeas. Lots of savory flavors and mild to wild spices. The most important item, the injera, was a bit thick. I'm not use to that and was interesting to handle. It still tasted like quality injera though. Newcomers: You eat Ethiopian food with hand, your right hand. Practice it. And start with the injera under your sides first before moving to the extra injera.

The Food was very good, It was quite unique and had a different variety of flavors. I would definitely like to try some more Ethiopian style food.

I saw a comment about being closed and was wondering if you were still offering take out? I've seen a few reviews from a several months back and noticed the hours were changed a few weeks ago.…

Is GIHON closed for good? or is it planning to open again? Its so good. Best Ethiopian food in San Diego.

Are you all doing the buffet (or some alternative like staff fixes plates vs customers fixing it themselves) with COVID happening right now?

Hi Tiff, We are not offering the buffet at this time.

What are the details of the buffet on Friday? Price? Food?

Vegan buffet 15$ per person every other friday

    Are dogs allowed?

    Yes, on our front patio.

We scouted the menu online and planned to order the yellowtail ceviche, calamari, tacos calabrese, casareccia tartufata, ravioli de carne, and pesto e gamberi. However, the menu we received in person was slightly different from the one we saw online. The yellowtail, pesto, and tacos were all gone, so we replaced them with a carpaccio and a ragu pasta. After placing our order, we got some bagged bread and oil. The bread was really good - it had a crunchy crust but was super fluffy. It took about ten minutes for our appetizers (calamari and carpaccio) to come. The calamari was lightly battered and extremely tender. The carpaccio is interesting and had a good flavor. Both of these were good. The carpaccio portion is pretty small but the calamari portion was pretty large. After another 25 minutes, our mains came. The ravioli is good, especially the meat filling. The ragu is good too, the pasta has a very good texture, the meat was soft, and the tomato flavor was strong. The ragu felt pretty light. The casareccia tartufata has a very strong truffle scent. It was creamy and truffle. Out of the three pastas I tried, this was my favorite. Despite having a thin looking sauce, this was the heaviest pasta too. Overall this was a pretty good dining experience.

Unfortunately on my morning walk this week, I noticed the restaurant is empty and there's a for lease sign up. To be honest, the food was good but not cravable --I never felt the need to go back. They have a really nice selection of both vegan and non vegan options. Ordered the Garlic Edamame, Karaage Bao Buns, and Crispy Gyoza. Garlic Edamame was delicious! It had that perfect combo of chili and the garlic was just right. And by just right I mean LOTS of garlic. Little side note, they didn't provide another dish to discard the eaten ones and also had to ask for plates which made a bit of a mess when you are sharing a bunch of small plates. Karaage Bao Buns were so good that we wound up ordering another order. If someone had ordered these and not told me they were vegan I would have never know. The texture of the Not chicken was perfect and the rest of the added flavors from the aioli's and garnish were well balanced. Our least favorite was the Crispy Gyoza. The ends were perfect combo but the middle was mush and the texture and flavor was not spectacular. It might have just been the cook but the the ingredients seemed like they were too wet when they were fried. Service was the absolute worst. Had to ask several times for our drinks when tables that were sat well after us all had theirs. I would come back in hopes the service was better but what a let down when we were there to celebrate and were ignored with the servers passing by us and not checking on us.

On a Friday night. It felt like VIP and private we had the restaurant to ourselves but it was so sad at the same time. They were more strong on to-go orders as customers came and went. We ordered their vegetable tempura, pineapple fried rice, and panang curry. Everything came out hot. All was good except the pineapple in their fried rice was spoiled. We brought it to their attention, and they corrected it right away. They explained it was canned so they're not sure how it could've been spoiled. We were unable to eat it. They made us a fresh new hot plate. They also brought us everything we requested like condiments and boxes. The lady was very nice about it. I couldn't hate on the place. It's just sad to see it dead compared to how it was before. The economy is really tough, and too expensive to dine out. The only one-off would be the spoiled food many because the food isn't circulating due to low demand. Anyway, the staff were very nice and polite though. Was not at all mad or rude when we mentioned it.
