I'm loving the renovations! The new carriage system allows me to run some timed drills that puts a little pressure on me - challenging my skills and building my defensive competency with hand guns. The new individual benches are great for riffle shooting too - no more movement/vibration transferring "down the line" from other shooters that can really mess up your shot when you are shooting with a scope with the target on the back wall. read more

My wife, another couple and I went in on Easter. We were greeted, and were asked a couple of basic questions about experience. I was the only one out of the four of us with experience, and it was decided that my wife, and the other couple needed a safety class before shooting. Although I didn't need the class I sat in, and re-familiarized myself with basics. Jose was the instructor. He was super upbeat, friendly, and well informed. Everyone including myself felt ready to go to the range after his class, and we did surprisingly well. Beginners used a .22 Ruger, and I got my hands on a rental(9mm Glock 19). Fees were standard, and we couldn't beat the location as we just live off of Bauer Drive. We will be visiting in the near future! Thanks again! read more

It's not a state of the art range like some places around here but all I want to do is shoot a gun at a target and I don't want to drive an hour to do it or wait forever to get a lane. I don't particularly like that I can't bring my own ammo or leave with what I buy there. I don't particularly like that the ammo I left was gone and that they gave me somebody else's to make up for it but they gave me 10 extra rounds so I'm not complaining. Is their ammo more expensive? Not really. There's a shortage of ammo in this area and I'll pay just as much or more at a gun shop assuming that it's even available. Staff? They're friendly enough. read more

Prices are outlandish, lane lighting was dismal as far as I remember, and you can't use your own ammo. They don't even have 10mm in stock LOL! So that means if you have a gun they don't have ammo for, you can't shoot it even if you have all the ammo in the world. The dude behind the front desk looked like all the life was sucked out of him with his dead eyes and lack of personality. They scalp ammo prices and drive your total through the roof. I diverted my friends away from this place after our first visit as the price made my heart stop as we all heard the total. Hell to the naw! I got a groupon for 2 people for the beginning class instruction plus range time. I tried to make the reservation online, but it wouldn't work, so I called and the guy gave me a couple options of available times. You have to come when there is a class scheduled of you're doing this option. We did an instructional class, with basics of loading, etc. Also there was a video. We then went on the range and my friend and I shared one lane (which is what everyone did). I found this place to be a good place to shoot. I also thought the staff was professional and courteous. The groupon/beginning class came with a week of membership, so we can go back and shoot with one free gun rental as well. read more

Great place to shoot guns. From pistols to shotguns to rifles and anything in between. You can even pull from your holster here. It's a great place with good service. Sunday afternoons are extra busy because of classes they hold so make sure to come early. The only thing was that the bathroom was not that clean and had no toilet paper on two of the stalls! It bodes well with me that most of the staff is ex-military and have an advanced knowledge on firearms. Shooting range is clean and easy to maneuver around. The beginners gun safety class is an absolute must if you don't have any prior experience. My wife and I took this course and got out 15 min ago. It's informative, thorough and ensure you feel comfortable and safe on the range. Andrew was an awesome instructor and knows his stuff. Took My HQL there. I was surprise I did not fall asleep in the class (almost every class I sleep thru it). The class went very fast. You need to keep up. I understand that some people may find it way to fast for them. For me I have plenty of experience with firearm but I did learn something new. I like how they offer privet classes. Andrew and I think it was Mike was our instructors and I give them (2) thumbs up and Mike help me with the safety button on there rental 22. I could not figure out how to disengage it. Gilbert range has many weird rules. I've been to many gun ranges and none of them have a policy of needing someone 21+ to accommodate you in order to rent their guns. Are they gonna hold the person accommodating you hostage in case you run out with it? That's just plain stupid and hurting their own business, but oh well, jokes on them. I'd highly recommend bringing your own eyes and ears protection. - You can rent it for free anywhere else, but will get charged $2/each here ($4 total) Most annoying thing would be the ammo prices, you have to buy their ammo and cannot bring your own ammo. So therefore....Nearly ALL! Of their ammunitions cost 90% more than online AND 50-75% more than any gun stores in the Virginia and Maryland area; heck maybe even the whole country. Compare the prices for yourself when you go there! If you're new to their range, they'll make you watch a 1980 video clip of a guy desperately trying to catch his breath every seconds while trying to explain you the gun safety. I'm in law enforcement and I had to watch this non sense. Cringed all the way through the video. If you don't mind driving a few extra miles to a different range, you'll find yourself saving a lot of money, and also won't be having a heart attack when you get your bank statement after knowing you got ripped off. read more

This place is just straight junk. No real shooter comes here. Only training classes and newbies. After becoming more adept to the shooting realm, I have learned that this place is unreasonably over priced, very restricted and limited to what you can do there and what you can shoot, and just overall we have such a bad experience every time. And what the hell is up with having all those guns on display with price tags if you're not going to sell them? Me and everyone I know, heard and tell horror stories of many reasons why we have such a bad experience. But most of all, the prices on everything is very unreasonable. This will be my last year paying for zip. The website says that Gilbert's opens at 12:00. I get there at 12:02 and I am told that I can't shoot. I'm told it doesn't open until 1:00. The parking lot is packed. Gunfire is heard from outside. Who's shooting at this range that doesn't open until 1:00? Security trainees. This is not the first time for this. Not sure why or how my review got "removed" wondered how much it cost them to take it down... Came here back in 2014. Brought my own firearm(s) and ammo, was told instantly that i could not use my ammo, had to buy thru them, guy couldn't give ANY explanation as to why I couldn't use my own. The ventilation is poor, and cycles air from outside, so during the summer it's like a hot box, and a freezer during the winter. The lane controls are extremely old, worn down, and a look to your left or right, you're guaranteed to see a hanging "maintenance" sign. Ammo prices are ridiculous, anywhere from 75% to 125% markup! The day after I wrote my review here, the owner called me and proceeded to tell me his sob story how difficult was open a gun range and in a pathetic attempt to do business, he offered a $5 discount off a one year membership. As many of you know they claim that they are required by Montgomery County to require customers to purchase ammunition on site, this is a lie an attempt to increase Revenue. There are no laws or regulations stating such requirements. I ended up spending $130 for two hours of range time and 3 boxes of 9mm. Being an economics major I'm not exactly sure how this place is still in business. read more

I will never buy a Groupon for Gilbert again. The rules on the Groupon says reservations recommended. They inform me that you must make reservations for Groupon customers only. They usally never answer their phone, there message box is always full and when you do get through they tell you to call later. And if you do leave a message, they never return the phone call back. Dear Gilbert, If you can't handle the added business, you should never have offered the Groupon. As far as the range in concern since I am still unable to use my Groupon I can't answer that at this time. read more

Before I start this review I'm making it perfectly clear. I am not a hunter I do not kill innocent animals I shoot for recreation, sport and personal defence. So all of you PETA people out there ready to slam me move on please no harm no fowl. I was a member when they had first open. But unfortunately that expired and I've been too busy to go back and join up and use it again. The membership is a little pricey 300.00 for a year but if you frequent the range alot then it's worth it. I found the range to be very clean and organized. Lighting a little dim but that's actually a good thing it kind of sharpens your skills. The ventilation is good and that's important. I been to many ranges good and bad. The bad ones can be some really dirty, smelly, oily, noisey,unsafe and can't breath right places. You can use any lane that you want it does not have to be right next to someone else, and if the person right next to you shoots your target by mistake then it's best that you move to another lane. The staff will ask you if it's your first time there. They use to give training with an instructor in the class room I don't now about now though. The facility is large and well sound insulated, it helps to bring your own equipment and firearms or they will hit over the head in rental, unfortunately you must buy ammo there due to state laws not Gilbert's. I use to be an avid shooter and this place is great I wish they had an trap and skeet range that would make it complete. read more

Gilberts is an odd place. Many reviewers are slamming some things Gilberts isn't responsible for. To give you some history they setup shop in Montgomery County and were very much disliked by the county. As a result they're in a secluded industrial park area. You'll find them by spotting the concrete building out back. With a huge camo transport truck out front to boot. Because the county did not want them there you MUST buy your ammo from them and consume it there. The county was concerned people would show up with armor piercing rounds or something. Excess unused ammo can be donated to their wounded warrior pool which allows vets under wounded warrior to shoot for free. This is where gilberts starts to get a little iffy with how they handled that situation. For legal and profit making reasons gilberts is technically a club. You need to be a member to shoot there. In the case of classes and the like they provide short term week or month memberships for free. However, in order to push profits gilberts adds $5-10 to the cost of ammo for non-annual members. What does that mean for you? Well, if I stop on by to gilberts and I just want to shoot for a bit I'll be paying $15 for gun rental and $25 for a box of 50 9mm rounds. $40 total as of Dec 2014 with a $1 local tax. Does gilberts have to price gouge 9mm rounds by damn near $10 under the montgomery country rule? No, they don't but they do anyway. Does that make them slimy? Well, read on. What if I was an annual member? How would the price change? The total would be $31. This is the range's way of pushing you into membership. They also assume those shooting on short term memberships are from the occasional groupon they've done. That crowd tended to go in for one rental session of 22 ammo and never return. The range made more profits by charging out the wazoo for people who are not sticking around. In other words if you're going to be a gun tourist Gilberts range sees it fit for them to gouge you on crappy ammo. The range itself is okay it's kind of an old concrete building. Built more like an old public school than a range. Most of the people that go there are security guards trying to pass their state examination. This also creates problems for us common folk, even if you're not a security guard these guards are FORCED to be there. This creates a situation where we have a ton of folks who are doing DUMB things and angering the staff. You may end up with some very rude staff because they're tired of dealing with the security guard wave of the week. Protip: call and see if it's busy the staff are far nicer when they're not yelling at security guards all day. Another tip, even the staff that work there don't like the Filipino guy that works there so if he gives you trouble don't take it personally. As far as classes, the instructors are knowledgeable and some of the classes have some borderline ridiculous topics like how to disarm an intruder in 4 hours of training. I think their beginner pistol packages are excellent for those who have never shot before. You aren't rushed, you're invited back anytime within a month for free and you're given constant help to know what you're doing for about 2 hours of shooting in the $165 package. In the end you get a certificate good for the NRA basic pistol and the maryland Handgun license. They also are great for beginners in that they will "forgive" you hitting walls or something that would have you immediately booted in other ranges. At least for as long as you're learning. In fact instead of booting you they''ll likely come over and help correct what you're doing. Also, Gilberts has had two patrons commit suicide with rental guns there. The most recent one being a young man this August 2014, so unless you've taken a class and they know you they will absolutely NOT rent you a gun if you're alone. Take note of that if you want to stop by. Overall if you're safe and don't mind firing crappy overpriced ammo to save you what you would have spent on gas to get to another range this place is great. If you own your own gun and are experienced there are probably better options out there. read more

Reading the other reviews, you'll see a common theme: non-shooters who bought a groupon experience had fun. Gun owners who have actually tried to use Gilberts as a range have not. I've given this place a few chances over the years, and it just hasn't improved. Service is dismal. The front desk staff are perpetually distracted and move very slowly. It will take you a very long time to get on a lane even if the place is deserted. A few years ago I recall being appalled by front desk staff who were openly rude to customers. Didn't observe the same behavior this time, but definitely still no culture of professionalism here. The range does not always feel safe. There has been no range safety officer the last several times I have been there. In fact, the only times I have seen safety officers on the range were those instructors supervising the groupon kids. Finally, prices. There's no such thing as a day pass, they push expensive memberships and the minimum is a week. Montgomery County insisted that all ammo must be sold and consumed on premises, which would buy Gilberts some slack on availability and pricing if they didn't so brazenly gouge you on just about everything other than 9mm (which is probably only priced reasonably to appease the various armed security companies they have as clients who train there). Markups range from 50-100+% over average gun store pricing for the same brands and calibers (don't even look online unless you want to feel nauseous). Want to shoot your AK here? It'll cost you over a dollar a round. I'll go back to shooting elsewhere. Maybe I'll give Gilberts a try in another couple of years, but if they haven't figured out how to run a shooter-friendly range by now, I'm not optimistic. read more

In Montgomery county you have to buy the amo at the range. Your not supposed to have it in the car. It's a Montgomery county thing. I think they have so many rules because Montgomery county requires it. It's more the range being compliant with the county for your safety. FYI, after you shoot you should take a shower anyway. Debris gets in your hair and on your clothes. Bringing your own hand wash isn't that big of a deal. I imagine they are trying to keep costs down. read more

My first time going and shooting he waited till the end and told me I was shooting at the rails when I wasn't and said I was playing around. He keep getting into my face when were walking to the counter told white guy manger. I was like u saw me shoot I wasn't playing around. The field officer kept on saying I did. He try hard to get me admit to it, wanted to deck him right there. I told them this is horrible customer service band me don't care not going back to that place. Gilbert has always been a range with some really strange rules. You can't bring your own ammo, which isn't their fault. Other than that, though, the first time I shot here years ago, I was forced to watch a very silly and uninformative video and take a "test" to shoot. They require memberships to rent lane time, and rates are significantly higher than competing ranges. Worse, their ammo costs are so high that they're really just taking advantage of people who don't know any better. So I found another range and haven't been back. Then, I come in today for the first time in a few years because I'm looking to purchase a new gun, and I've called ahead and asked if they have it for rent. Yes, they do! Alright, the cost will be worth it to test it out first. I excitedly drive over, only to be told that they no longer rent any guns to anyone who is not either law enforcement or accompanied by another person. Not just people under 21 -- *anyone*. Never coming back. Addition: I'm actually in the parking lot after being turned away. I just watched a group of seven people walk in and walk right back out during the couple minutes it took for me to tap this into my phone. How are they still in business? read more

I went to the HQL class here to accompany my father in law and the teacher (Mr. Samson) was very knowledgeable did a wonderful job and was very well prepared and detailed. I must say the range looks good with very cheap prices for ammo and gun rentals. I also saw customers shooting rifles which is great so you can shoot rifles here just FYI. I definitely will be coming back here to shoot as I already have told several of my friends so they'll be enjoying me as well. read more

Sooooo not worth it! I like to write positive reviews but can't with these guys. The safety instruction was anything but safety focused. I spoke with the "instructor" after and commented on how rushed the session was and that there were people in there, myself included, that felt rushed and that this could present a safety issue on the range. He brushed it off saying it was a part of the job he hated the most and was just focused on getting through it. On the range, the guns (I fired a pistol and rifle) seemed dirty by the amount of ammo jamming. They appeared very focused on safety on the range, making sure the pistol was properly set down on the shelf but this seemed more an of an effort to enforce the punishment of being asked to leave with no refund. read more

After watching a 30-minute video, you too can sling lead! At Gilbert, you have to watch the aforementioned video and take a quiz before you can get onto their range. The vid covers basic range safety, and is a reasonable requirement. The front desk appears to be reasonably responsible with the weapons they rent out, but they're a little disorganized, so expect to wait for several minutes while they take care of other customers or find [stuff] for you. Docked a star for that. Otherwise, a pretty decent range. Electronic target ranging system, so you know how far your target is. Pretty clean range, well lit. Friendly and helpful staff. Stupid MoCo rule about buying ammo from the range (unless you're LE) means you'll pay through the nose for ammo, though. But I guess you pay for safety, as opposed to MSAR. read more

This place offers Groupons every other week, and they get a lot of first-time visitors that way. I think that's smart of them. If it hadn't been for the Groupon class and a friend suggesting it, I probably wouldn't have considered trying a gun range. I'm against gun ownership and sports hunting, after all. But a part of me thought "don't judge until you've tried", so I went. The hallway of dead animals was pretty freaky, and the items you find for sale in the store make you feel like you've entered a parallel universe, but the actual class and shooting experience was educational. (Well, if you forget about the racial slur comment from one of the employees.) My friend and I both shot .22s, but our guns kept jamming, so they brought us a different gun and ammo after the 12th or 15th jam. It surpised me how the sight really works on a gun - different than I expected from the movies. I was also shocking how heavy even a small gun is. There's a lot of gun powder in the air at a range, too. The most amazing thing was how quickly you can become accustomed to holding and using the gun; we were much more comfortable after only an hour. That part is a little scary. You can see how people develop a false sense of safety around guns. The sense of accomplishment from improving at hitting the target was very satisfying. I understand why they keep doing Groupons. I like the fact that Gilbert's is just around the corner from where I live but I have had some issues with one of the guys that works there, Asian fellow that goes by the name of "Charlie", very rude and mean; he does not know how to talk to people, in my opinion the owner should send Charlie for some costumer services skill building classes. The staff is fantastic. Sure, the place could use a coat of paint, and probably some newer guns, but honestly, I will be back. MANY Times... simply because the staff is welcoming, informed, and hospitable. I took my husband here for his 31st birthday. I had a groupon here, used it, and they said come back anytime - not come back but only with another adult. What a waste of a trip.
