I ordered a special which was basically a bacon cheeseburger deluxe I upgraded to onion rings. Overall, food was very good. The onion rings were the best I ever had would definitely be back. Ice cream here is some of the best soft serve around Their flavors actually taste as advertised. Pumpkin is excellent. Hot Cocoa was great. Chocolate peanut butter was even better. Stopped here on my way home from a weekend at Colgate University - wasn't bad but its definitely truck stop vibes. The shop itself isnt the cleanest and the bathrooms reeked. The food itself wasn't bad but also wasn't the best. Service was also just okay. Not bad but also not great. Everything about our stop here was just...meh. If you do not care at all about your food or your service, this place is great! How ever, if you care about how your food/ice cream is prepared, then you should go somewhere else! We had two orders, & they were specifically told that they were two separate orders. One order was a burger. The second order was for an order of fries. So what do they do? They put the order of fries with the burger. We tried it 3 separate times & tried to word it 3 different ways. No change. Then you have to have a shake, but how could they screw that up you ask? Easy, they just partially blend it! Of course you want the hard ice cream in your shake, but you want it blended into your shake to make it uniform. I hope you don't get it malted, because since they don't blend the shakes, you just get a clump of malt powder. They need to take their time while preparing the food, & pay more attention to the actual orders. We have gone at least 10 times, & each time they have NOT gotten the orders correct. read more

Central NY seems to have an ice-cream (and sometimes burger) joint every 10 miles or so. They're tasty, and a fun stop -- you owe it to yourself to try 'em out. And if you try one out, you should probably make that one Gilligans. Most of these places close for the winter, but Gilligan's is open all year round (I think that they took a two week break for the holidays), with 10 or so tables inside. The burgers are tasty and juicy, wood-grilled, on buns that are step above the average fast-food bun. They offer a bazillion options, including a garbage burger with macaroni salad on it, so check out the menu. This isn't a poseur gastro-burger (as much as I love a poser gastro-burger) -- but it's a thoughtfully done burger-joint burger, definitely above average for the price. Fries are crisp, with plenty of potato flavor, but they aren't as exceptional as the burgers. Onion rings are pretty damn solid. The ice-cream, when I've had it, has been tasty, and they have something like 30-ish flavors that seem to change with regularity. That said, they sell their ice cream all over the area -- I've seen their stuff two hours away -- so you might say, "Gee, I've had similar." Although, why wouldn't you wanna get it where it's made? I personally love the soft-serve (which may cement my status as a short-fingered vulgarian here). They have new flavors all the time, like the red and green peppermint swirl I had just before the holidays, or pumpkin, or sometimes weirder stuff. And I appreciate the $2 'baby' cone, which is actually a pretty generous serving. I've yet to try out the alcohol-flavored ice-cream, but it sounds like fun. read more

When I was going to Colgate, this would be a consistent stop with my family when they were in town. Now if my family drives through Colgate (with or without me) they stop here too! My family lives in the general area so I get back to Sherburne once or twice a year. Everyone is a big fan of Gilligan's, and we tend to congregate there for a dinner while I'm in town. The menu is surprisingly extensive...more like a Coney Island than a fast food place. I typically go for one of the chicken sandwiches and splurge on their fantastic onion rings along with a real milkshake (not the superthick ones, which are more like a DQ Blizzard in consistency), which serves as my dessert also. The menu is fairly standard "fast" food, but the quality is much higher than you will find at your local fast food joint. Does that make sense? If you are a burger and fries aficionado, then you will love this place. For onion ring lovers, they are hand breaded and a service size is generous...don't miss these. Prices are reasonable, as expected. Dinner for the two of us was around $17-18 with drinks included. Once you are done taking down your man sized burger, you will be sorely tempted to top it off with their homemade ice cream. And why wouldn't you when they have dozens of unique flavors...some with a local flare (Raider Passion for you Colgaters). This place is a local favorite. They have a pretty big menu that includes stuff like soups, sandwiches, burgers, soft serve and hard ice cream. I was surprised by how many ice cream flavors they had. I came because I heard raving reviews about the seasonal pumpkin soft serve ice cream. A size small was ginormous (like a size large). The soft service is extremely creamy and delicious. The texture is rich and smooth. The flavor tastes like real pumpkin puree. I thought the flavor was surprisingly accurate. I felt like I was eating a pumpkin pie. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and a pretty big parking lot. Indoor seating are booths that fit around 4 people. You can order from outside as well as from inside. They have a rewards program where you can earn points & receive freebies. They have weekly specials that are featured on their Facebook page. I'm looking forward to returning to try their burgers & hard ice cream flavors. The exterior of the shop is Googie-esque with the glass windows, the triangle pillar, and the slanted rooftop. (Everyone calls it Gilligan's, not Gilligan's Island) I consider the best burger to be the bourbon bacon cheeseburger or the mozzarella stick burger. Most of the hamburgers don't come with lettuce, tomato and onion, instead they stick with their theme. The hot food is good, but the real gem here is the ice cream. The milkshakes are great and can be made from any of their 40-something flavors. They also make sundaes and sell ice cream cakes in the freezer. My wife, daughter and I really enjoyed both the food and the ice cream here. The burgers were delicious (and they have many options to choose from). The homemade hard ice cream was awesome. I wanted to give this place five stars, but there was one issue to could be easily fixed....cleanliness. Everything needs to be wiped down (shakers, condiments, tables, decorations, etc). The owner/manager needs to "supervise" the many teenage girls working there to insure this is done daily. This is an easy, inexpensive issue that could be fixed in just a few hours. Oh.....and please list what the speciality ice cream flavors are........nobody knows what "Happy wife" flavored ice cream is?! Ordered a chicken wrap here and asked for no sauce. It took over 15 minutes waiting for the item. During that time the staff didn't seem to really be talking to customers too much. When I finally got the item, the order was wrong (had mayo on it). I went up to tell the staff that the order was wrong, but it was going to be a long wait (again, they weren't really talking to folks). So I gave up and drove away. 20 minutes, $8, no sandwich.
