Gill's is my go to breakfast place and I always get the same thing. The Southern Breakfast! Two eggs over medium, 2 sausage, 2 bacon OR all of the same, hash browns or American fries, sausage gravy and toast! Yummy! This breakfast place in Machesney park is in the sketchiest place and inside is even sketchier! The booth seat was broken in that every time I moved, the seat creaked. They didn't have matching coffee cups and it was a very odd experience. I got a skillet and it came with two KRAFT single cheese plopped on top that made it look very unappetizing but thank goodness the food was actually decent! read more

I've eaten here many times and had my share of bad experiences, but today's visit is what made me feel the need to post a review. Look at the receipt. It doesn't add up right. After paying the bill at my table, I looked at the bill and noticed I was overcharged by $2.50 prior to taxes being added on. I brought this to the new owner's attention and she said its for the gravy I asked to have put on top of my American fries. #1-the waitress should have said there would be an extra charge and how much it would be so I could make an informed decision if I wanted to pay $2.50 for a little bit of gravy on my potatoes. #2-$2.50 for a bit of gravy? Their gravy isn't that great! #3-all charges should show on the bill so customers know what they're paying for. The owner didn't offer to make it right and refund me the $2.50 that I was unaware of being charged for and instead she just continued to argue with me. That's bad business. Also, I was seated at a dirty table that had sticky syrup all over it and had to be wiped and my friend ordered a pancake in substitution for potatoes, but wanted it to come out later so it would be hot when he was ready to eat it, which he's requested before and it wasn't a problem. The last two times, including today, they brought it out with his meal. The one waitress said, "well, they made it already" and the waitress we had today said, "I don't remember you saying that", but at the time of ordering, she acknowledged the request. ‍‍ read more

I love Gill's diner! The staff is so friendly and funny. I recently started coming here with my kids since we live local and are trying to support local as much as possible. I've heard nothing but great things from friends and I decided to give this place a whirl and I love it! Such a cute diner and the food is delicious! Their corn beef hash skillet is scrumptious. And oh my gosh, their Gyro is so tasty! And their fries.... wow! Golden crispy fries dipped in their homemade ranch dressing is to die for! They have great coffee too. I always have a hard time deciding between breakfast and lunch when I go because I love their food so much I just want the whole menu. LOL. Thank you Gill's for amazing food and service. As busy as they get, they do their very best to work hard and keep their customers satisfied. A little dirty, as I walked in I noticed it wasn't as clean as the last time I had been here. We ordered, and our food came out fairly quick. There is just something about going to a restaurant and feeling welcomed and almost like good friends or family are there. I got food delivered to me and it was a disaster. I ordered the turkey club which the menu says comes with fries and a soup. When I went to open the container it felt light and I should have known something is wrong. I opened it and there was just my sandwich. I had a few other things I ordered so I opened them and sure enough there was no fries or soup. I also asked for mayo and that was missing. I also ordered the cheese cake and it was leaking all over the bag. I called the restaurant and I was told that they really couldn't do anything for me and that I would have to wait till the next day and call back at 8 am. The girl on the phone made it sound like it was my fault that I did not order fires and that it normally would not come with fries. I proceed to read the girl the description from their menu that state there was to be fries and a soup. I am sorry but I work during the day and I do not have the ability to do that. Needless to say my dinner was very lacking and I was still hungry as my meal was missing half of it. I am going to try them one more time as I always want to give a business the benefit that this was simply a mistake and not the norm for them. This has the potential to be my new quick stop. Food was fast, I had their biscuit n gravy special with eggs, bacon, and hash. The biscuit were really good the gravy can use a really work but was not bad at all. I ordered the eggs over easy but they were a little over cooked not a big deal but they did give me three pieces of bacon...woo hoo while other places usually give only two. The decor is definitely out dated but gives that cozy feel. I did not like that couldnt see the cook since its referred to as a diner. They is a lot of seating so no fear to be told "you can't sit there" and wait for this..... they accept credit cards. Yeah this place has definitely the potential to be my new spot. My bride and I refuse to eat at chain restaurants. We purposely look for the locally-owned diners where we know we're going to get service from the staff that will joke back and forth with us, treat us like we're family, and (of course) serve great food. Honestly, we've been back to Gill's so many times I can't count and I have never been disappointed. The portions are great, the prices even more so. I used to think this place was "off the hook" too but no more. I think the waitresses rock and give great & friendly service but the owner is only interested in getting you in, getting your money, and then getting you out. I have been going there for over a year every Sunday with my friend. It's our one chance to meet and catch up and since there is no work to go to we sit and linger over breakfast and coffee. We meet at 8 a.m. and stay until 9:30 or 10:00. Although dead when we arrive it generally fills up by 9:45. Last week the owner actually asked us to leave so a new patron could have our table because they were unhappy. Did it not occur to him we would be unhappy to be asked to leave? He suggested we sit at the counter. Why not suggest the new people take the counter? It was only because we were two women alone that he asked us as we noticed a four top of men who came in at the same time were not asked to leave.
