I've been to Gil's a couple of times before. Though I'm not a fan of the Manske roll, as I'd much rather clog my arteries with a delicious enchilada than a cesspool of melted butter and refined sugar, I'd generally found their burgers decent and their prices good. However, we stopped by last night around 5:30 for dinner. Some friends of our were celebrating their two-year anniversary and wanted to meet up for a visit over burgers. We walked up, started in to the store, only to have a girl working there tell us that they were closing for the day. I asked why, since their posted hours said they were supposed to be open for hours yet. She said it was because business was slow, and it looked like it was going to start raining heavily. A male coworker then informed my Lovely Bride that...oh yeah...they were out of meat too. (Seriously? Out of MEAT? At a hamburger place?) The Manske rolls are awesome, however Ive had times when the roll was about the size of a half dollar and other times its been 6" across, cost the same both times. The burgers are mediocre at best in my opinion. They are cheap though, and it beats a McDonalds burger. It gets really loud on some nights, which I prefer for the most part. The one on Wonderworld is a different story, we went on a weekday evening, maybe around 5. Beer, Manske rolls, most Soda, and more, they had none of it, I think all they had were burgers. We were the only customers in the joint, did not get a "I am sorry" or anything for the inconvenience. That really sealed the deal for us, we wont be going back there again. read more

COMPLETE Disrespect and disregard for their customers. I am getting that out there first in case they caption my review with just the first sentence. I called in more times than the amount of food I ordered. I called in the first time to get delivery and was asked if I was college delivery or wanted them to Deliver, I said them. They then took my order , where I asked them if they 2$ cheeseburger mondays were 1/4 lb burgers they said yes. At the end they informed me they were out of manske rolls. This being an order for a company I needed to make sure that would still go over but people were indeed just hungry and didnt mind. I called back in again and was told they dont Deliver. This again being a company order had to call them back. The third call, after all other issues, I tried to order 7 CHEESE burgers one with only the cheese. No toppings. The cashier didnt seem to understand and thought I only wanted 2 burgers. After about 3 minutes of breaking down my words to get her to realize what I was asking for she repeated it back to me and we were all good to go. I get in there and went to pay when they informed me their prices had changed and I was viewing an old website. I then hesitated unsure if after all of this I wanted to pay the extra 6$ and was rudely asked by the manager "You are really not going to take these burger because they are a few cents more?". I almost walked just because of the interactions I had had but my team needed to be fed at this point so I conceded to giving this terrible place my money. I then got back to the office just to find I had only 5 of my 7 burgers. When I called back and spoke to the manager she said they are here waiting for you. I then again asked, "This is for a business and I was already in there once is there any way to get delivery?", the answer was "We do not have the staff to do so.". I then again conceded to picking them up for a second time and said "fine what are you planning to do to make this right?". The answer blew me away. "Your burgers are here waiting for you sir what more do you want?" I was aghast and she could tell and then offered me a coupon for a free Manske, you know, the things they had no more of meaning I have to give this place yet another shot to screw me over. I went in, waited in line to get my burgers, no one noticed me so I went to the "kitchen" area and finally she handed me my burgers and apologized. I waited for my coupon and then she realized that she was still needing to do that and I waited. I get back to find there were no burgers that were missing the toppings like I asked and so we had to scrape all the toppings off a very grease soaked nasty burger watching the bread fall apart. it was disgusting. If you dont believe me look at picture number 66 and you will see what it looked like. I cannot believe anyplace with such poor management in a world of immediate social feedback even exists. McDonalds people, go to McDonalds. May be a nasty burger but at least they will get it done they way you ask for it and the grease wont soak the bun into falling apart. read more

I was super excited to try Gil's. It has been featured on television. San Marcians rave about how great the burgers are. My boyfriend and I found ourselves in San Marcos one lovely Saturday afternoon, so we stopped. This place is, in a word, suck. The whole place appeared to be coated in a layers grease. From floor to ceiling the place was dirty, grimey, and disgusting. But the Manske Rolls smelled amazing so we decided to give it a chance. Sometimes the hole in the wall has the best food, you know? As we waited for our orders I watched the process of filling the ice machine. She takes two buckets of ice and sets them on the floor. Then puts one bucket on top of the other so it is easier to reach from her step ladder. (And yes you guessed it! That does mean the bottom the bucket that touched their gross floor rubbed all over the ice.) After she dumped the ice in the machine, she stacked the buckets inside one another and walked away. Leaving them there. They might as well keep a pile of ice on the ground for you to scoop directly in your cup. Needless to say, I stopped drinking my soda. Trying to give it a chance we waited for our food. After about half an hour they called our name. Our orders weren't even close to right. They didn't even get my side right -- there are only 2 options!! But again, trying to be open minded, we attempted to eat our burgers. They were underwhelming to say the least. Definitely nothing to write home about. What little meat was on the burger was caked in the mustard I specifically requested they cut and the onion ring (as in the singular, despite my ordering multiples) was so saturated in grease I couldn't begin to eat it. So my suggestion, if are faced with Gil's and the nastiest place you have ever seen in your life -- the kind of place you are pretty sure will give you diarrhea from just looking at, go to the other place. What a disappointment. It's been on TV for the famous "Manske roll". It's a local favorite. It's beloved and recommended by many. And it sucks. We stopped by after a visit to Aquarena Springs (which was a blast) . Even before opening the door, it smelled great! The yeasty smell of the Manske rolls made me immediately hungry. We ordered burgers and got chicken strips for the boy. Warning sign already: the burger comes with mayo by default. uh, welcome to Texas. We eat mustard on our burgers. Waiting for the food, we tried to find a clean table in the front room. None. Wandered back to the back. HOT! Returned to the front and cleaned off a table. Took the boy to the back to wash up and they were working on the bathrooms. OK, maintenance has to be done, but the mens bathroom didn't look like they'd touched it - and they definitely hadn't bothered to clean it. I get it. It's a dive. Deal with it. We went back to the table and the boy spotted roaches on the wall before the food came. It was also hot at that table, so we decided to move away from the roaches and closer to the fan. I'm not really bothered by the occasional bug. I've worked in restaurants and know it's hard to keep your establishment completely bug-free. And, it's an old building. So, not a big deal. yet. Cleaned off another table, sat down, food's ready (took about 10 min - not bad for having one guy doing everything - but 3 orders and you don't even have a tray?). We hadn't unwrapped the burgers until more roaches were spotted on this table. The boy starts to feel a little freaked out (the wife, not so much - which is a surprise). Move on to table #3. clean it off. ask for ketchup packets. "there should be some on the table" sez helpful counter guy. "we'd rather have some that hadn't been sampled by the roaches", I reply. seriously wondering if we should continue eating. don't want to freak out the boy any more, so I just eat my burger. More roaches spotted at this table. (Please define "infestation".) "this place gives me the creeps" says the boy. yes, the family's had enough. I guess the idea of having my first Manske roll for dessert is out. I can overlook a lot when it comes to good food. The burger? meh. They DID get the order right (Mustard NO mayo). But the "grilled onions" were a glop of pre-cooked tasteless greasy blah. Whataburger is better. Way better. Seriously. The iced tea was good - fresh and no "dirty tea container" taste. We were around the corner getting our computer checked and asked where we could find a good lunch. Gil's Broiler! Was the immediate and enthusiastic response from both the store workers and customers. And we weren't disappointed! We had the half pound burger with cheese and no bun since we're gluten free (oh. We're THOSE kinda folks LOL) The only reason we're shorted the review a Star was because, technically, the order was wrong. I asked for burger with cheese only, mayo on the side. I got lettuce, tomato and relish with no mayo. So we ditched the toppings and ate it anyway, even though the juice from the relish got all over the meat and flavored it. BUT, we plan on trying again. Get the Manske roll!! I love this place, it's a local dive in San Marocs and its close to campus. It has reasonable prices and good service. The food is a little bit on the greasy side, but the fries are delicious. I really appreciate that they have a veggie burger and a turkey burger. First off the service is horrible, they can't listen to customers. The cashier was rude, and messed up not once but over 4x on one order. 3 order came out before ours, even though we placed our order first. The burger aren't as good as they once were. The buns remind me of Wendy's they stick to the roof of your mouth and are a bit hard to get down. The burgers have changed, since the remodel, and not for the better. The generic soda, taste low quality as well and has an odd after taste. The Manske roll what they are famous for was subpar, it had the texture of over microwaved bread, the scoop of ice cream was half the size of the scooper used. The quality of food and service, isn't what it once was. I did contact someone at gill's and over 4 weeks later they, still haven't gotten back to me as to what happened that day. This place is not what it once was! After posting my initial yelp review I was contacted 20 minutes later about what happened the day I ate there. My rating will stay the same till, I give them another try sometime down the road and reevaluate my experience. read more

Their Manske rolls are delicious! Think a cinnamon roll, but more moist, soft, and fat. Great size to share with two, but delectable enough to selfishly eat one yourself. According to their website, President LBJ used to order these from their bakery and send them to the White House. I almost waged an all social media war with them. They were charging me an extra $10 after I had already paid for the pay-$10-get-a-$20 voucher deal to Yelp. After five minutes of trying to explain that I didn't need to pay AGAIN, I ended up paying them $10 extra because there was a really long line. I had decided I would call Yelp customer care to refund me my $10, so I was simply FUMING for the next 20 minutes eating my meal. Point being, I'm glad I didn't start burning fires on my social media platform. One of the female cashier/cook called her manager and asked how to deal with Yelp deals, and she refunded me the $10 apologizing that she had been instructed wrong and confused the Yelp deal with a group on deal. So point said, they have a staff who actually care about you as a customer. I was impressed she went out of her way to clear the air up of the confusion (instead of me taking to my own means). Obesity incoming. Manskee rolls are the most disgustingly delicious thing on the face of the earth. Everything's better with butter, and this definitely includes cinnamon rolls. They're kind of hit and miss, sometimes they're too salty (I wish they would use unsalted butter), but most of the time they're amazing, in the worst, and best of ways possible. I don't think there's much else I can eat there, its all meaty American food. But the giant rolls are plenty enough. I wish I never discovered this place, but now that I have I try to ride my bike there and back to avoid gaining 15 pounds. read more

I thought the hamburger was great, sweet potato fries are really crispy, and the cheese sticks were perfect. And oh yeah you got to try the Manske roll. It would've been five stars but my wife thought the grilled cheese was just okay. But I say if you're going to go to a broiler get a hamburger! The cheeseburger was so good, I think they make their own bread, the patty itself was perfectly seasoned and the sautéed onions made a perfect symphony in my mouth. It looks like they are renovating this San Marcos establishment but don't be put off by it. Keep walking by the other restaurants and head straight there. Dined here with one of my favorite Texas State Students and it was so yummy I purchased a four pack to go! Their Cinnamon rolls are probably the best I have ever had. They are NOT the typical overly sweet, sugary Cinnamon rolls dripping in sugar or icing. These rolls are incredibly clean with the perfect amount of sweetness and a little hint of butter. They are pretty big so bring a big appetite or limit your meal to their Cinnamon roll only. If you don't want a plain Cinnamon roll they offer Carmel syrup, Hersey's chocolate bar, ice cream and or bacon for a small fee. Their burgers are just as big and delicious and their french fries are perfection. Their burgers and fries are made to order which means they are super fresh and tasty. Their prices are good and though the building is old the place is well kept and clean. The only down side to this place is that the entire time we were there it stayed busy and appeared understaffed. Our rolls were also warmed up to the point that the icing totally melted and ran over the plate and it nearly burnt my mouth. When one of the biggest draws to your restaurant is not served properly it is kind of a bummer and shows a lack of training or concern for the customer. All in all this place needs to be at the top of your list if you are in the San Marcos area. They have been around since 1949 and after visiting I understand why. read more

I used to work two doors away from Gils and drank a lot of good tea from there but I've never been seriously impressed with their food. I'm not a Manske Roll fan so I miss out on that too. I hadn't been into Gil's in a few years and went on New Years Day with a group of people including my two young boys. There were about 12 people in line to order, one girl taking all the orders and then she had to cook all the orders too. They were out of bacon, got the orders all wrong and the music that plays there is not appropriate for children under 17. I suppose if you were a college student the cheap beer and burgers is a plus but I think I'm past that stage in my life. It'll be another few years if I ever try them again. read more

Gil's has been our to-do list forEVER, and we finally decided to stop in yesterday. The first WOW! moment occurred when I saw the prices, and the specials...CHEAP! The second went down upon viewing my beautiful burger; bulging beef, hanging over the golden brown bun, piles of pickles, and MAYO (mustard is provided on the counter...the way it should be!). Needless to say, number three happened when I bit the beautiful beast. The Jen had to shield her face, because I only fired off a few chews, when WOW managed to wobble from my burger hole. I had tots, she had fries, and neither of us shared; a sign of HOLY CRAP, THESE ARE DELISH! The fourth, and final, and by far the absolute best WOW of the evening was after our burger bash. No, not that. This...A Manske Roll. Perhaps the one item everyone on death row should include in their final meal. We were purists, and ordered it plain. The choices of caramel, ice cream, a melted Hershey Bat, or bacon, were music to this reviewer's ears, but we wanted a plain jane. Heard good things about Gil's Broiler and was pretty disappointed. First, there is no AC in this restaurant. Today's high was 103 so you can imagine that this restaurant was pretty hot. While my burger was decent, and the fries were good, my friend got a BLT and the bacon was burnt. Totally unacceptable and when she took it back up, they "fixed" it and then gave her the burger back. The second, "fixed" burger is in the picture shown above. So then I went and asked for an explanation from the cashier who then told me that, "it's supposed to look that way." That they ran out of bacon and had to order a quick shipment. Then the cashier also replied that this bacon cooks weird and if they don't cook it till it's black than it is raw. I've lived here for four years and had the shady, cheap hotdogs by 35 (not that impressive), but never the Manske Rolls. So I rolled on down to downtown and bought a box of four. I pushed the list out of my mind when I got home and heated two up for my husband and I. It was okay. Nothing to rave about, but very very very oily and buttery. But not the REAL butter kind of buttery. The artificial butter kind of buttery. I bet back in the day, it used to be a lot yummier. They should have a throwback day where they actually use real ingredients. I could go for that. However, I'm pretty sure I could have made a better roll myself with real ingredients. And those Manske rolls are dangerous carby fat bombs that chase after me in my fitness nightmares, tempting me to devour them all. Ok, Let's get some things straight, this place is across from a college. It's not trying to appear on Oprah for healthy eating options and premiere child daycare. First thing to strike you should be the decor (and good smells). the walls have a mural of the Taos Pueblos...I have no idea why..but it's kind of cool. There's also chakra pendant art suspending from the ceiling up front which is again, weird, but cool. And the lighting is low which is fine with me since I believe the sun will get us all one day. So orders...this could not be easier. The burger, drink and fries combo comes to just under $6. This is NOT just another run of the mill burger. A Gil's burger has some distinct features and taste. Class, please put on your safety goggles and lab coats: dissecting this burger we will find mayo. To counter the mellow tone of said mayo our taste buds will happen upon some cold, brightly crinkle-cut and slightly sour pickles. and then to center our burger back into place we have GRILLED ONIONS which provide a sweetened balance to the entire burger chomping experience. I've never braved the Manske roll, and I plan to keep it that way...as good as it looks. I've tried the chili burgers, mozzarella sticks, and the chicken strips. Everything has a made from scratch taste and of the three, the one I would most recommend would be the strips. The fries are always crisp and they go easy on the salt which is a blessing. This is exactly as good at being the thing it is as you could expect. It's a burger joint in a college town, with a cozy atmosphere and actually really good burgers. The counter staff are kind and friendly and get your order slightly wrong every third or fourth time...but never disastrously wrong (unless you can't choke down a burger without mushrooms or you're allergic to Swiss but not American, you weirdo) and they will fix it without complaint. Oh, and if you go at night on a weekend, there will be lots and lots of drunken dude-bros. What are you going to do? It's Texas State. They're like deer; a nuisance animal that occasionally surprises you favorably. Very loud and clumsy deer. And for God's sake tip the counter people! I was really hungry today after a solid days work and I was looking for something to eat. I was famished and wanted something a little out of the ordinary, something I do not get very often. After thinking it over I decided to go with Gil's. I ordered the 1/2 pound burger, a large fry and a few drinks....the food arrived fairly quickly but upon further inspection I realized I was only given a small fry and not the large I ordered. This normally wouldn't be an issue but the price difference goes from small ($1.99) to large ($4.99). That's a gap as wide as the grand canyon when it comes to prices. The overall quality of the burger wasn't bad. It had good flavor, you could tell it was fresh. I also like the cheese. It is of the sharp cheddar variety, a favorite of mine. The fries were generic bag fries (my arch-nemesis) but they were much better than some of the other places in town. I hear they have good dine-in specials that I wouldn't mind checking out but I doubt I'll be ordering them for delivery any more. They do not do it for themselves, so you must go through a 3rd party (College Delivery) and they charge on top of the prices and add a $2.99 delivery fee. For my entire meal it cost me $18.50....pricey, I think so. Even though the food was decent, the portions were small, they messed up my order, and it didn't match up with the price tag whatsoever. I've heard so many good things about their Manske Roll that I had to go in and check it out. I went there in the evening with a couple of friends. We didn't realize that they were about to close, and I really hate being those people to order something while they are preparing to close, but the lady working was very nice and insisted that we go ahead and put in an order. It took less than 10 minutes for us to get our Manske rolls, and they looked so great. Ice cream and cinnamon roll... Why had I never thought about this perfect combination before?!?! I went to this place yesterday as the last stop on our family vacation before heading home and WOW the burgers are Amazing! Perfectly seasoned, you can tell they are fresh. The burger buns have a really good flavor that makes brings the burger together real well. If you choose to have onions in your burger, know that they are slightly cooked which brings out a sweet flavor of the onion that you might not associate with a traditional burger and would rather go without it. The atmosphere is nice, I found myself trying not to sing along with a mouthful to a few of the songs that were playing. There is a good variety of beverages, several which I had never heard of though they did taste good. Best for last: the Manske rolls Boy oh boy! I'm not crazy about cinnamon rolls but these are sooo delicious they just melt in your mouth as it's exploding with flavor. The only thing I hate about these is how addicting they are! When we got home we ate the last two and now I sit here in rue for not thinking of getting more than one box. The yummy goodness of these rolls was totally unforeseen. Well, I did skim through a few reviews about them but figured people were just being dramatic so didn't make much of it but wow! They are so so so good! A box of 4 costs $8.95, $9.69 with taxes and they are most definitely worth every dollar. You could also order some online, a dozen for $23. Disappointed the burgers were not charbroiled as the original Gil's Broiler made them years ago. It's sad that a local restaurant changes ownership, keeps the name and food becomes terrible. Fries were too salty and the typical summer nats did not make the experience pleasing at all. At least customer service was great. read more

If you're craving a delicious, greasy and cheap burger...this is the place to be. I ordered a 1/2 lb cheeseburger with avocado combo (with frings -- fries & onion rings) along with a Manske roll. After my meal, I definitely realized that I should probably order a 1/4 lb the next time! I loved that the food was hot and the fries definitely is the best out of the sides (fries/onion rings/tots). The onion rings were a little underwhelming due to the thick cut and lack of flavor. Manske roll/cinnamon roll is definitely the best I've ever had. The consistency was perfect, and it came out super hot (you tell them when you want them to bring it out). It wasn't overly sweet and the sauce they had was perfect. Can't describe it but you gotta try it! It's not frosting but more similar to a slightly salted caramel ? Not sure but it was amazing. Will for sure be back the next time I visit.
