Oh my! Since it was weekend Inhad to do the Eggs Benny... can I just say the white wine hollandaise is worthy for everything. Slap that i. The challa bread and call me done! A slight overcook on the poached eggs but still had the golden glaze. Tater were cooked perfectly with the outer crunch and inner fluff. Was not done there because the half order of biscuits and gravy were calling my name. Have it with a sausage patty and the bonus will not disappoint. Good service, interesting art. That said, 2/3rds of us disliked our food. The pesto salmon pasta was good, I tried a bite and agreed. The porter biscuit sandwich was so bad I asked them to remake it. The second time it was less burnt but still overcooked and the batter was too unpleasant to eat. The last of us had bourbon pecan chicken. It was better than my sandwich but didn't really taste like chicken due to so much seasoning or marinade (I tried a bite of it as well) and the grits were similarly over saturated with some sort of flavoring. Came here for brunch on a Friday & it was such a quaint place to visit! Right in the square of San Marcos, good location & nice shops around. We made a reservation but there were still plenty of tables open for seating. Our server was very nice & patient with us. Most of us got the hill country breakfast which was very good! I got the chicken & waffles & everything was cooked perfectly. The chicken had a lot of flavor & was juicy. The waffle was hit as good, however the syrup was a bit runny for me. My husband and I visited for breakfast after reading a couple of reviews that were highly complimentary of the French Toast. Sadly, we were disappointed all the way around. The restaurant smells musty when you walk in. We were seated at the very back of the establishment In hard, uncomfortable chairs. Our small round table had two side leaves that had been extended out one too many times. When the food arrived, the waitress had to set our food toward the middle of the table so the dishes would not slide off! LOL! My biscuit was so hard I couldn't even break it in two. Heading back to SA from an early morning meeting in San Marcos, I stop off at The Root Celler Cafe for some breakfast. I got seated immediately and after a quick review of the menu I order the hill country breakfast and a hot tea. The order came out shortly after ordering and it was quite tasty. The eggs were softly scrambled, and the breakfast potatoes were nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The biscuit was a bit dry and I skipped the gravy but after adding some butter and jam it didn't go to waste. Overall, a nice breakfast spot and I'll be back to try more of the menu. read more

A cute option right off the square, Root Cellar has a small patio and inside seating. I also saw what looked like an upstairs patio but it was closed when we were there. It was a beautiful day so my friends and I sat outside. I'm not normally a bloody mary person, but when I saw the big jug of vodka marinating with all the veggies, I had to try it. Spicy style. It was magnificent! The bacon inside was crispy. Also on the specials board we saw a spiced chai marshmallow drink or something, my friend tried it with espresso and it was very good. You don't normally see fried asparagus on menus so we said we must get them. The fry on those was really great, reminded me of fish and chips. Perfect crunch but not too much breading. Our server did not know a lot of answers to our questions, and our sandwich came out a little different than what the menu had us picturing, and they gave us the wrong side, but it was good. I was in town for a conference and found this hidden gem downtown San Marcos and so glad I did, it was so delicious with really great options and breakfast all day! It definitely gives speakeasy, wine cellar vibes and I loved it. Please make note of the step down into the entryway. They do have signs up and I still tripped because that's just who I am. Now to the main star, the food. We had a party of 5 and we all got different dishes and drinks as well. I tried the hibiscus tea and it was great, very refreshing. We tried the roasted brussel sprouts as an appetizer and those were great, just the right amount of sweet and heat. I got the Caribbean Stacked sandwich w homestyle potatoes, large portion and I thought I'd had to take half to go but I pushed thru because it was so good I had to finish it. Others at the table tried Chilaquiles Verdes, Holy Aioli, Beet and Goat Cheese Salad w Grilled Chicken. There wasn't anything left on anyone's plates. It was all so fresh and delicious. Aesthetically speaking this place is cool., inside and out and we sat out on the patio. We were the only table sitting outside. Had a few eggs ordered over medium came out over easy. Took a long time for the eggs and my wife's waffle so didn't bother asking for a new order, had to leave for the airport and couldn't wait. Bloody Mary's were weak but improved w/ a shot of vodka. Love this hidden gem in San Marvelous! After the Alumni game, we hit this place for a nice meal. The Pork Belly and the Pecan Crusted Chicken are two favorites for us. Add the Brussels sprouts and you have a winner. This has more of an Austin vibe, laidback and just a cool place to hang with friends. It's in the heart of the downtown area, which is party city for this college town. Service is good, but remember with it being laid back, nothing happens too fast. We visited The Root Cellar Cafe on a Saturday after a hike with our two German Shepherds, and it was a fantastic experience! The waitstaff was incredibly friendly, giving us a great table on the patio with plenty of space for our large dogs to lay down. They even brought out a water bowl for each of them, which was a thoughtful touch. I ordered a mimosa, which was delicious and very well priced. My husband had a Bloody Mary, which I felt was a bit overpriced. However, the food more than made up for it. I had the half size biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon, eggs, and toast. The Texas toast with the perfect over-easy egg was delicious. While I think a side order of bacon should include more than just two pieces, none of that mattered once I tasted their biscuits and gravy. They were the best I've ever had! The biscuit literally melted in my mouth, and the jalapeno cream gravy was out of this world. I can't even express how good it truly was! Coffee was a little weak for my taste, but I did live in Costa Rica where the coffee is outstanding! We ordered the Eggs Beni and the Southern Hash. Both were outstanding! Cannot think of one thing I would change or edit. Eggs were cooked perfectly the hollandaise was creamy and seasoned well. The menu looked good and they actually had a lot of vegetarian options which was cool. They also had a small section for mocktails. I got the pasta primavera and she got the Mac and cheese! My honest review is that the food was A-okay. It was not something that blew me out of the water. The service was slightly slow, but hey it was also crowded and we didn't mind because we had a lot of catching up to do. The price was a little overboard considering the taste. The ambiance was cute and quirky. There was a lot of college ages kids in the area since it is near campus. Overall this place was okay. Would I go again? Chips tasted store bought, and the hummus was over salted - Fried asparagus: yay. Simply because it was different, and worth trying - Beet and goat cheese salad: Nay. Fresh but VERY simple, and the dressing was a bit too tangy/sour for my taste - Meatloaf: Yay, was pretty tasty, but had the consistency of a burger. - Eggplant sandwich: Yay. My mother-in-law got this and said it was tasty **Side dishes were very underwhelming. Nay, not worth it. I got the grits, and it was bland stove top grits with cheddar sprinkled on top.
