The service and food were excellent! There wasn't a long wait despite being crowded. My food was brought to my table hot and fresh. The burgers were delicious and HUGE with good amounts of toppings. Honestly the fries were a bit too salty and fried too well done but still edible. The natural root beer was a hit with all of us. It's a bit pricey but well worth it. Because of all the great reviews, We decided to give this place to try while in San Marcos. This place is located in a very busy, dingy area of downtown. It took us 20 minutes to park! When we found the place, I was in shock! It's a lack-luster, run-down diner! No children's menu for the 4-year old. Classic burger for her, grown up burger for me, 3-pc. chicken tenders for the 12-year-old an order of fries (didn't know the entrees came with fries) and a strawberry shake. $44, thank you very much! Worst food EVER! The burgers were flatter than baloney, dried out, crumbled when you but into them, so much mustard you could gag, greasy beyond 20 napkins! If I could rate just the food, this place is a solid 4 stars. Today was my 1st time eating here and our last. We walked in and nobody greeted us at the counter but I didn't think anything other than they're busy cooking. We take our time reading the menu, figuring out what to order and still, nobody greets us. Finally a lady came up with an irritated attitude asking what we wanted. Thrown off by her demeanor, I looked around and noticed an ordering kiosk to my left I apologized and laughed, asking if we should just use the kiosk and she repeated herself in a monotone, "what would you like to order". My husband asked her what the difference was between the 5oz & 7 oz patty in size or thickness and she said "one is bigger than the other" (monotone again). Well gee Karen, thanks! So we finish our order and my 7 yo daughter grabs a bag of chips. This lady side eyes her and yet again with attitude says, "and some chips?" as if she was just gonna steal a bag of chips???? Walking into JAX is like taking a trip on a Time Machine back at least 50 years. Back when you could get a burger and some fries fresh and delicious from a local diner. I had the bacon cheeseburger and fries. The fries were the best I've had in years. The burger was just the right size, not too thick and definitely not too thin. The bun(oh the egg bun) was super fresh and soft and set the flavor combination up a notch. The bacon was huge thick slices, cooked to perfection. The service was good. I had the Baja burger, jalapeños, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. Let me tell you about the onions, they were chopped, not sliced. I usually like my onions grilled, but not today. As I was eating my burger, all I could think about, was that the onions were not to strong, and made the burger for me and my wife. I love that they had three different kinds of flavors for fries. The fries had a lot of seasoning on it so I would probably ask for light seasoning or no seasoning. Best burger in San Marcos! I had the bacon cheeseburger and onion rings. Wife had the shrimp burger with fries. We both had the Mexican cokes on tap. They are made with real cane sugar which is a plus for me vs high fructose corn syrup. There are other drink options such as lemonade and tea. Our daughter got the chicken tenders with fries and a chocolate shake. The staff was working even though the dining room was empty. They was prepping the toppings and boxing for later use/storage. The dining room had a 50s sort of retro vibe with checkerboard red and black Giles's and logo. It's at the heart of the square in a great location next to bars and other restaurants. This place should be a favorite with Texas State students and late night partiers. It's a little pricey, but then again what isn't worth paying. Inflation sucks, but good food doesn't! read more

Walking the Square in San Marcos I stopped into this burger joint after checking other establishments. I really didn't want a burger so I opted for the grilled chicken sandwich. The chicken was extremely moist and tender. Topped with cheddar and accompanied with mayo, lettuce and tomato. I requested BBQ sauce on the side.
