Wife and I used to come here all the time for meat jun. But man, the quality of the food tanked hard recently. Apparently they no longer have choi sum. (What?!) The meat jun was super thin and still somehow tough. There was zero flavor and it felt kinda slimy. The kim chee and daikon were barely a light shade of pink and tasted like straight radish and cabbage. The only things that were ok was the taegu and the rice. But really, if you mess up rise you shouldn't be in business at all. They still give a lot, but for $20+ a plate and the quality being what it is, you're better off going elsewhere. This has left a really bad taste in my mouth (figuratively and literally) and I for one will never be coming back. It's a real shame. ::Update:: My wife was eating the leftovers for lunch today (she's a braver soul than I) and found nearly half an egg's worth of egg shell in the meat jun batter. Gina's BBQ in Market City Shopping Center - in Kaimuki, or is it Kapahulu...possibly Mo'ili'ili - has bewn here for awhile and established a reputation amongst locals. It is for takeout...it is essentially a hole-in-the-wall eatery. I requested the Mini Meat Jun for takeaway, which comes with two banchan choices. I can't recall having eaten at Gina's previously; I have only been to the Kapolei location, and their meat jun was a bit disappointing. Today, I chose the kim chee and choy sum. Both were excellent. The meat jun was thinly battered and sliced...any thinner and I'd call it anorexic...ahem. It was good but the sweet and tangy sauce kind of threw off the dish. Also, a bit too much rice. If I'm being honest, they're OK. Very average. Their ban chan is one of the best. They have a good selection of it, or I should see a variety. Some days you will not get the Taegu though. I really wanted to like the food here more, but it just wasn't that good. Gina's is a takeout only Korean bbq spot. There are a few seats inside to wait for your food, but nowhere inside to eat - so everything is to go. The service is really nice and efficient, but the food is a bit wanting. I got the spicy bbq chicken plate. The regular plate comes with 4 sides of your choice, and the portions are all around generous. I put my plate on the scale when I got home and it was literally 3 pounds of food! I just wish there was more flavor. Most of the sides were ok except the mac salad, which needed more salt and felt very gloopy with an excessive amount of mayo. The main entree - the "bbq" chicken - was on the drier side. The spicy sauce helped, but I have a hard time believing this chicken spent much time on a bbq at all. There was hardly any char and no grill marks at all! I was at T-Mobile this morning and a few doors down was Gina's. Had never been here before! Decided to get their Mini Bento. Choice of two sides with Chicken & Bulgogi (marinated beef). Lots of food for a Mini Bento. Sadly the food was very disappointing. Rice and side dishes were decent. The Chicken was dry and tasteless. Beef tasteless and tough to even chew and was thrown out. The BBQ plates here at Gina are hefty and that's how we like it. Growing up my parents would treat the family to Gina's BBQ monthly. It was a comforting delicious meal we always looked forward to. Service here is prompt and quick. Be sure to double check and repeat your order. I ordered both plates no rice with veggies but during pick up only one of the plates was no rice. The meat Jun today was very dry. I was surprised by that because the meat Jun is thin. The BBQ chicken was dry but well seasoned. The Kalibi was cooked nicely. Maybe today was an odd day for them. Our go to place for Korean food for over 35 years! I can't believe I didn't review this place yet. The food is good, portions are very generous, and the service is excellent. The place is very welcoming and I've only done take-out, although they're seats alnog the counter if you want to eat there. Parking is out front for the entire Market City and I've never had a problem finding a stall. The place can get bustling with all the orders stacked up but it only reassures you that you're not the only one that likes the food here. Over the years, I've tried almost everything on the menu and I've never been disappointed. Even the sides are all good. I've also catered a lot for get-togethers and parties. We had a craving for Meat Jun/Korean food. We stopped in here around 530p on Super Bowl Sunday and there was nobody there! Very friendly and welcoming ladies. It's takeout only. My family had an "early Christmas" get together on Saturday because my nephews and their families were in town from LA and Maui. Rather than going out, we decided to order from Gina's and enjoy our time at my daughter's place. There were 19 of us, including 2 babies and a pre-teen, so there had to be enough food and variety, and there certainly was. The mix was good including, Kalbi, katsu, Teri chicken, bbq pork, mandu, chicken wings, noodles, mac salad, rice and a ton of banchan and kim chee. The taste was great, but the only confusing thing were the sauces weren't labeled, and they forgot to include utensils and napkins (out bad also, for not checking). Everyone left feeling full and satisfied, with enough to take back as well. It was a great choice and was one of my nephew's favorite places to eat while he was still living here and going to college. You know that if it's good and inexpensive enough for a college student, it's a go-to spot for family parties. read more

Can't believe this places in five stars. I've been coming here for decades and it's always been legitimately good. I think the only thing that was bad this last time is that they didn't have any of the green vegetables, which I was really looking forward to and I usually double up on. Otherwise it's been great. I have been coming here for years and it is sooo bad now. I got Gina's special plate and brought it home. I got cucumber kimchi (sliced too thin) seaweed, cabbage and chapchae. All were too acidic, too much vinegar and too much salt. The meats were all too dried out and flavorless, overcooked. I came at 12:30 and I did have reservations when choosing the ban chans. This is for the food review. My go to for meatjun plate and omg have they done downhill. Soooo disappointed. The meatjun is very very very thin, I can barely taste the meat. It was either cooked too well or undercooked. How can that be at the same time?! It was very dry, stale and hard, and it looked like the flour on it wasn't throughly cooked. It also had no flavor. I live 5 minutes from this place so the food should have still been warm by the time I started to dig in. Definitely would not come back. read more

I used to love coming to Gina's as a kid & all throughout high school. They always gave a lot & were pretty consistent for the most part. Over the years, things have changed. Although the store itself looks the exact same, quality has gone a bit down & I think possibly new owners have taken over. There aren't as many sides as they used to have & the food quality just isn't as good. Their meat jun is still pretty good, but you can definitely find better elsewhere. I used to love the hot fried chicken wings, however the batter was basically falling off the chicken and had a gummy, not crispy, texture. The chicken itself seemed a bit undercooked. My bf had the kalbi and bbq chicken and both were pretty dry. Used to be a neighborhood gem/a "go to" for great Korean food. Not sure what's going on . . . Ordered Chicken Katsu, to say it was over cooked, would not give the true essence of how OVER cooked it was. Closer to burnt. Extremely hard, chicken didn't even resemble chicken, more like chicken jerky. From the looks of it, it seems as if they "pre-fry" the Katsu, then fry it again when the order is placed. But in my case, it looks as if it might have been a 3rd or 4th fry. Would recommend Honu's down the street on Kapahulu. I love picking up food from Gina's whenever I'm in the area. Their spicy bbq ika is my favorite and I love the kimchi radish and taegu banchans! My most recent visit, they didn't cut the ika up like they usually do so I asked nicely and they said okay for this time. Weird. When I got home, their ika tasted different. Much more tough to eat. My teeth are sensitive and their ika is usually always tender so I thought maybe just a bad day. Then I heard that they changed owners... so that explains a lot. Next time I might not get the ika... I've given this place a few tries before updating this review because our family has been coming here for years since I was a kid, but now, their food just isn't the same. Portion-wise, still very filling and generous. A combo plate can feed two people or one for several meals. The service is sweet and friendly by the Korean ahjummas. However, here's what I need to highlight about the food. The kalbi and BBQ chicken were so dry and lacking char... virtually no grilling can be detected on the meat. The japchae is literally just seasoned noodles - no veggies at all. The mac salad was quite under seasoned. That being said, I can still vouch for the soup, we always get yukgaejang and it's warm, spicy, and delicious. I've been coming here to Gina's for years as this Market City Shopping Center location is so convenient with lots of free parking that can get crowded during peak times but will always be a great convenience and appreciated. It's been quite awhile though since my last visit as it's always been quite busy with room filled with hungry patrons and what I truly love is getting to choose your barchan sides versus the pre-determined that some other places does. It's been awhile because of some of the protein mainly chicken had been awfully overcooked to a point that's inedible too hard like it's been sitting too long after it's cooked and it happened on numerous occasions. So much so that even on this visit it took me awhile to decide if I should try it again or a different direction. Yook Gas Jang it was for me since it does come with barchan as well and passed on the rice so that I'm able to get and extra choice making it total of five...daikon kimchee, Taegu, seaweed, and two japchae and all are yummy as ever though they were missing macaroni salad which then was told Costco was sold out lol! Okay well my order was made and packed securely on a box with masking tape and was excited to take home this comfort soup. Not a huge green onion fan but didn't want to mess with it all and ordered just as is was hugely disappointed how little nothing there was in there I understand the inflation though this was the saddest portion I've ever seen not that the barchan should make up for the lack of items in my soup where I know what the usual should be...taste was okay not that super flavorful which was disappointing and hoping that this would make my exhausted day filled with a comfort moment. I've been coming here since my days at UH and after moving away, coming here again to eat their food takes me back in so many good ways. Everything looks the same and tastes the same. With the same kind people serving the heaping amounts of banchans that I love so much! My go to is the fish jun, and while I love it, I know that there lots of other dishes beloved by many too. I got the fried chicken wings plus fried oysters combo $20.49. The plate had four pieces each of oysters and wings. The plate came with white rice and four sides. I usually do shoyu potatoes at these Korean places, but Gina's doesn't offer that. For my banchan I got taegu, corn, choy sum and kim chee. It also came with two small pieces of veggie spring rolls. While the food was still good, my wings were burnt. Talk about being charred, lol. I'll chalk it up to them having a bad day as the food is usually really good. read more

I ordered fish jun and Kalbi meat x plate. When I got the plate I saw an orange sauce condiment thinking that was for the spring rolls they give as complimentary. I asked the server can I have the fish jun sauce. She said it's the orange sauce one. I tried tested with the fish jun and I did NOT like it with the fish Jun. that orange sauce didnt go well with the fish Jun. so I went back to ask her, for another fish Jun sauce. She told me there's an extra charge(.50) for another sauce or exchange for that one sauce. I was like you're gonna take that one sauce back after I already dipped the fish Jun in(cross contamination)?All I wanted was another sauce to replace that orange sauce that did NOT go well with fish Jun. how hard it is just to replace that junk orange sauce?. Gina's is my hand's down favorite spot for Spicy Pork. The flavor is so rich, Korean sweet, with a slight kick of heat! Personally it's how I like it.....with some FAT, haha so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. They serve it in a foil pouch that keeps all the sauce and meaty juices contained so I can top it all over my rice. Delicious! Again that leans to sauce having oils from the fat, which may not be to everyone's cup of coffee.....that's ok I don't like coffee anyhow haha. I've been coming here since we back in Highschool in the late 90's. Almost always, if I am on the Kapaku Lu side around dinner time, it ends up being a Gina's stop for food. The inside may not be the most aesthetic.....as it''s now just the serving counter with a bunch of boxes for take out. However their food is ON-POINT! Upon entering the restaurant, I was amazed at the number of customers wanting. Was this an indication that the food is excellent? I was number 4 in line to order. There were six customers waiting for their orders. Ordering was fast, and the gentleman who took my order friendly and answered a question I had. Gina's is similar to other Korean restaurants, where you pick your starch and banchan. I ordered a two choice combo. Meat Jun and BBQ Chicken. The Meat Jun had a thick egg coating.
