Sticker Shock. Mama has always had reasonably priced food. I ordered the Kalbi ribs. When she told me that it was $46.00. I took a few seconds. then said ok. You get two pieces of Kalbi, rice, Kim Chee, bean sprout and cabbage. See photo. The meat was tender and flavorful. Worth the price as good meat is getting harder to find. This will be my first "choi's" when it comes to korean food. Besides the flavorful and well-balanced taste, the kalbi and meat jun have the next level of thickness. Not only that, but the level of softness is beyond me. The meat jun is so soft that my chopsticks had cut through with little effort. My kalbi was so easy to pull away with a gentle tug. Highly recommend place to try. The service was awesome. The owner was doing multiple things at once, yet she was able to be attentive to her customers. Choi's Family Restaurant is located in the Hana Market for a few years now. It's located on McCully Street and its parking is with the McCully Buffet. There's two reserved stalls for Hana Market's customers as you enter the parking lot. I've ordered Korean food from Choi's since they were at the previous location but since they moved I really liked their spinach tofu salad! They have a little spicy dressing like a Taegu dressing . The dressing can be ordered separately, since it's so popular. Lately I ordered the zucchini tempura! Wow I must say it was really good! The slices were huge and thick and the batter thick and nice & crunchy! I believed I had about 11 pieces in my order! The sauce which came with the zucchini was really good too! Thankfully for me, they have kept Hana's popular 'Big Breakfast of two eggs, two scoops of rice, and 4 pieces of meat. It's gone up in price like everything else these days, $6.59 as of 8 June 23. Hana Market has two dedicated stalls in the back parking lot on the Ewa mauka corner of McCully St & Algaroba St intersection, makes for a fast in and out for takeout. I went last week to pick up food for a party and got to "talk story" with the owner for a little bit. She bought out Hana Market so owns both businesses. She set up a kitchen in the front part of the store that she cooks out of and the rest is still a little liquor/grocery store. Choi's is another one of my "go to's" for pot lucks and parties or dinner if I'm craving Korean food. She still has 2 party packs available. Each is enough for 4-6 people. Party pack #1 bbq chicken, beef, fried mandoo and choice of chicken katsu or meat jun. This includes rice and vegetables for $56 this one is my favorite! I usually order her famous spinach tofu salad with her homemade dressing that is addictive! They have now moved to McCully street into a small market. I got combo 4 (Kalbi and meat Jun) $16.50, Pork jun ($14.50) and Spinach Tofu Salad ($11.80) The food is similar but different. The kalbi is no longer the one large bone type thats filleted out, but the 3 bones that are sliced thinner like most places offer. I get it prices are on the rise and the need keep prices fair, it was still tender but not the same and i wish it was cut thinner. The other thing i noticed is that the pork jun is really thick now, it used to be thin like the meat jun. Its still very tender probably because of baking soda, but I prefer them thinner cut, more surface area and batter ratio. The meat jun is still very good, probably one of the best on the island, i think cooked in the deep frier. Thinly sliced, tender and nice crispy badder. The tofu salad is still killer, so simple but yet so good, spinach, tofu and a wonderful mildly spicy dressing. You can buy a pint of the dressing for $8 just get your own spinach and tofu i guess. The dressing has korean chili pepper flakes and sesame oil, those are the only 2 ingredients i can figure out. Its not too spicy but its very tasty. The sides are nothing too special but i liked the kim chee cabbage it was the fresh type with kimchee flavor, not really the traditional fermented type. Since the kalbi is not the special big bone type anymore I'll probably go for the Lunch Special (12.80) BBQ beef, BBQ chicken, and meat jun. I placed an order a few days ahead. The day before, I called to cancel part of the order, the worker said he couldn't do it, he didn't know how, and I should call at 7:30am because someone will be working by then and it will be fine. I called at 7:35, no one answered the phone, and I was unable to leave a voicemail because it wasn't set up. I called again before they opened and the same lady I placed the order with answered. Recently moved to inside HANA MARKET on McCully Street, parking in the McCully Buffet lot, this take-out-only hole-in-the-wall is my new favorite. The BBQ chicken is really good, actually everything is really good. The zucchini tempura, meat jun, & tofu salad are my fave. I like to put the tofu salad sauce on everything, and apparently others must too, because you can buy a pint of that sauce separately. The menu I posted is old pricing so you just have to guess how much your bill will be or ask ahead of time so you're not surprised. The family pack is the best bang for your buck. I came looking for something to eat for breakfast and the person working there was so angry! Her first words to me was "what do you want!" In an angry voice. When I said I was thinking about the breakfast and asked for a menu she shouted there is no menu look at the door! Then when I was looking at all the pictures on door deciding between breakfast and Korean food she got mad and came out with a knife and pointed at the breakfast picture like I was an idiot and I explained how maybe I wanted Korean food so I was looking at all the pictures. We have great news, we're having a baby! Oh wait, that's not supposed to go on Yelp! But in similar news, Choi's family restaurant has moved from its long time King Street location to McCully, sharing space with Hana Market in a take-out only format. So apparently the guy who owns Hana Market is sibling of the woman who owns and runs Choi's family restaurant (or that's what he told me while I was waiting). I'm guessing due to COVID pressures, he allowed her to move her eatery into his shop. Be prepared for some sibling fighting/banter in Korean when you're there. Words of advice, call in your order. Do not go there and then order, seriously just don't. The place is an enormous amount of chaos in a tiny, tiny, tiny space. I was dodging the woman and her assistant who are moving at 150 mph who run the eatery as were other patrons in the tiny shop. Call your order in and pick it up a little after when you're told it will be ready to minimize your time in that whirlpool of frantic energy. It's also a bit confusing who you pay, but you pay the hana market cashier who then confirms that you paid. Parking is a bit of a mess, as you either park on the street, or grab a stall in the shared lot with McCully Buffet. Turn right heading south down McCully street as the half of the lot is one way only. Now, what you're really after: the food is the same, the menu is the same, and the prices are the same, which explains the constant stream of customers picking up food. Try it once and you'll join the following. I got my regular BBQ chicken, which came with the regular two scoops rice, lots of kimchee, beansprouts, pickled cabbage, and a truckload of delicious BBQ chicken. I like how Choi's gives a significantly more amount of meat than other Korean BBQ places. Like I said, try it once and you'll join the following. So, I'm not exactly thrilled by this new location as opposed to the former South King Street place, but I'm still coming, because once you go to Choi's, you'll never patron another Korean BBQ place again. read more

Hallelujah, so glad I found this place again!! We used to get take-out from their restaurant location near Keeaumoku, and we were soooo sad when it "disappeared" (sometime during COVID lockdowns). Even if the new digs leave a little to be desired--make that a lot of to desired--sharing space with a random, hole-in-the-wall mini mart does not automatically disqualify a good eatery in my book! I don't know when (or why) we started referring to the business owner here as "Mama"....she might've called herself that once, when we first started going to her original restaurant (10+ years ago). But whatever you call her, there's no question that Mama makes some of THE BEST Korean-style chicken katsu around...and lots of it!! Unlike some other places, the chicken katsu here is ultra-lean--there's not an ounce of fat or skin on this mountain of crunchy goodness--and yet it's also very tender (chicken thighs), with just enough marinade flavor that I personally enjoy eating it without any sauce! That said, I know some people swear by the katsu sauce here...even ranking it up there with the all-time favorite "bulldog sauce" (whaaat, how can that be?)! Also, the panko breading is delightfully light & crispy--yet still managed to be substantial enough, and NEVER GREASY. I also appreciate that the crunchy breading actually sticks to the chicken, without separating or crumbling away. When you get to the car, be sure to open up your bag of food, & open the top cover of the katsu, to allow the steam to fully escape! Speaking of parking, there are a few reserved spots in the parking lot next door (shared with McCully Buffet), which has always been enough for me to just run in and pick up my phone order. As long as you give Mama at least 15 minutes lead-time (she'll tell you 20 minutes), the food should be hot & ready as soon as you get there. We normally get a side order and cook rice at home then add on either a side of bbq chicken or the spinach and tofu salad which is large enough to charge with 2-4 people. We've been hooked on their kimchi daikon which isn't too spicy, even for my husband who normally not tolerate spice. Everything there is amazing! Ate here for the first time. I ordered the family pack #1 which includes bbq chicken, bbq beef, fried mandoo, and a choice of chicken katsu or meat jun all for $49. This pack feeds about 5-6 people. I assumed this was all I was getting so I cooked rice prior to picking the food up only to find out that it comes with a large container of rice, a large container of mixed veggies, some kind of meat jun or mandoo sauce, and a small container of kimchee. The meats were a bit dry like they've been slightly over cooked, but the flavor was on point and you can't beat the price for this amount of food. I love to smash food and I couldn't even eat a lot of it. The staff are friendly and fast. I phone ordered and it took about 20mins to pick up. Due to these Covid-19 times, only take out was allowed and you have to enter through their backdoor to pick up your order for some reason. There's a bit of street parking and they also have this small parking lot behind them, but unless you have an average sized vehicle, you may have a hard time turning into their driveway. Definitely highly recommended and as you will see, it's all in the dressing. It's a huge portion of spinach with at least a block of cubed tofu. The dressing makes it come together with the perfect blend of savory and a hint of spice. A must order, as you will see my fellow reviewers recommend it as well. The meat jun and teriyaki beef were very tender and delicious, but I wasn't a fan of the mochiko chicken. My wife and I picked up a couple plates as part of a fundraiser. We essentially shared everything but one plate had BBQ chicken and meat jun and the other had BBQ chicken and bulgogi. Both plates had rice, veges, and a single mandoo, and we also got some complimentary kimchi. Overall, I thought the food was excellent. In something new for our office, we've been having occasional catered lunches. The most recent one, a coworker selected Choi's Family Restaurant both for the quality and price. So I donated blood at the Blood Bank this afternoon and what a nice way to end the day with a hearty meal. I was craving for chicken katsu so I yelped for near by places. Choi's Family Restaurant popped up. It's actually a take-out setup that's hidden in the Hana Market on McCully Street. I called in an order for the Combo 3 plate which consisted of chicken katsu, meat jun, and mando. It's served with rice, kimchee, and some cabbage and bean sprouts. This meal can easily feed two. Cost is $17 but everywhere the cost of plate lunches has gone up. The meal itself was very delicious and I loved the katsu. It was crispy, moist and had a very nice flavor. The meat jun was also good and I loved the mandoo. The cashier lady was very friendly and shared that her restaurant use to be on King Street which I have eaten at in the past. We used to eat here all the time many years ago and I don't know why we stopped. Fast forward to tonight, we stopped by and I already knew I wanted the Kalbi. I love kalbi and the one they serve here makes my eyes roll to the back of my head as it tastes that good. We are not talking that thin sliced kalbi but rather the kind with the one bone and the long thick slice of juicy tender meat that makes you say oh my! The Kalbi plate is $27.90 but it is so worth it. Another thing I love here is their tofu spinach salad. It is so good that I can't stop eating it and I don't even like veggies and tofu but oh the way they make it is so good. I recommend ordering some. My better half got the Combo plate #1 which came with BBQ Beef, BBQ Chicken, & Fried Mondoo. It had three types of Namul aka panchan aka seasoned vegetables. $12.80. Looking for korean food for lunch and the hubster and I stumbled upon Choi's. I've heard of this place for their tofu salad sauce, and I've had it at parties, which is absolutely the bomb! So aside from the fact that service sucks here, the food makes up for it. On this particular day, and maybe its like this everyday or perhaps today was just that kind of day for them, they had 1 girl on duty who was the host, the server, the cook, the cashier, and the dishwasher. All while the owner is laying around in the corner tables watching her K-pops. Customers were there waiting for their food for what seemed like 30min, all while we are waiting for our food order to come out. I don't know why it took me so long to come back to Choi's Family Restaurant to have a meal, as Choi's was one of my favorite Korean restaurant of mines, since the early 90's. My coworker & I use to frequent this restaurant back in da dayz when the restaurant use to be located across the street from the Old Stadium Park in the Mo'ili'ili neighborhood. Choi's Family Restaurant has since moved away many years ago, just down the street........... closer to the Keeaumoku / Ala Moana area. The current Choi's restaurant is much smaller than the original one, but I can tell you for a fact that Choi's still cranks out some ono Korean Grindages!!!! And as a plus while coming here, at least the current location of Choi's Restaurant has a pretty sizable private parking lot in the back of the building. All you have to do is go along S. King Street, and turn into a lane, which leads to a very large parking lot behind the building. I came here for lunch today, as I suggested it to my coworkers because I remembered seeing the awesome pics of the grindages from my Yelp buddies - Rachel I., Jo Y., Pam H., Li Y., Jo C., & Lori L. ............you chicks is AWESOME, and you folks know your GRINDAGES! My wife and I decided to try Choi's for lunch after finding out that Kyung's was closed on a Tuesday. The restaurant was pretty empty at 12:30 with the workers sitting down at a table for lunch. I ordered the fried squid and my wife had a small portion "B" combination plate of meat jun and BBQ chicken. We were served a plate of Kim Chee and dried daikon as our ban chan. When I dine at Korean restaurants I really look forward to the 5-7 plates of ban chan that are usually served so I was disappointed that we were only served 2 plates. To be fair the ban chan was good though. My fried squid was really good and the portion was large. They didn't ask me what spiciness I wanted but the dish turned out perfectly seasoned. The squid and the vegetables were cooked to the perfect doneness, tender squid and crispy vegetables. I would recommend this dish. My wife's plate was not as good. The batter on her meat jun was a little greasy and had a doughy texture to it. My wife loves meat jun but she didn't like this one. The bbq chicken was better but lacked flavor like it wasn't marinated long enough. It had nice grill marks but my wife had to dipped the pieces into the meat jun sauce to add flavor. When i crave Korean I usually go to Chois Kitchen but today i decided to cheat on her and come here! Been here long time ago and have trie the food as catering so it was perfect timing to come back! Here the reviews: -Ambience: nothing fancy (or the cleanest restaurant ever) but who cares about that if the food is good. -Service: for some reason I always feel that Koreans are not big fans of latinos... i always feel some how discriminated since i can see how they treat me and how they treat others... she even told me to be careful not to dirty her menu... how could that happen? Not sure but those were her comments. -Parking: in the back -Food: did their combo 4 (Meat Jun, Kalbi & fried mandoo $16.50) Portions is generous and food had a lot of flavor!
