We've been searching for this restaurant for years! Mama used to be located on King Street before COVID, and we finally found her new spot. In our opinion, they serve the best Meat Jun on Oahu -- the thickness and flavor of the meat are unmatched. We also love their BBQ chicken and spinach tofu salad. It's a true hole-in-the-wall gem with very reasonable prices. Takeout only now, but still our favorite go-to Korean place on the island.

Choi Family Restaurant is serving inside the Hana Market.

Choi's Family Restaurant is located in the Hana Market for a few years now. It's located on McCully Street and its parking is with the McCully Buffet. There's two reserved stalls for Hana Market's customers as you enter the parking lot. I've ordered Korean food from Choi's since they were at the previous location but since they moved I really liked their spinach tofu salad! They have a little spicy dressing like a Taegu dressing . The dressing can be ordered separately, since it's so popular. Lately I ordered the zucchini tempura! Wow I must say it was really good! The slices were huge and thick and the batter thick and nice & crunchy! I believed I had about 11 pieces in my order! The sauce which came with the zucchini was really good too! So much better than zucchini jun! Best to call in your order and it'll be ready for you than having to wait since there was no waiting area or chairs.

Mix plate I had was a huge portion! Kalbi was very thick cut and tender. Marinated beef and chicken were also juicy and tender. Not salty. Rice.. decent. I will try Fish Jun next time.

Choi's Family Restaurant took over the kitchen at Hana Market on McCully St about a year or so ago. Thankfully for me, they have kept Hana's popular 'Big Breakfast of two eggs, two scoops of rice, and 4 pieces of meat. It's gone up in price like everything else these days, $6.59 as of 8 June 23. Hana Market has two dedicated stalls in the back parking lot on the Ewa mauka corner of McCully St & Algaroba St intersection, makes for a fast in and out for takeout. Based on recommendations from Yeeps Craig T & Braddah Fran C, I will definitely come back and try some of their Korean dishes! Will repeat and recommend!

Delicious as always. Choi's meat chun actually has beef in it not slivers of meat! The Bulgogi is meaty! She has carrot tempura bites too!So delicious.tofu spinach salad is a bomb! Choi's Family is located in Hana Market (she runs the market too!!)

This is (2) party packs and spinach salad. Generous servings and delicious!

Choi's Family restaurant moved from King St to McCully street located inside Hana Market. Sadly it's no longer a "restaurant" for sit down dining and she only does take out but I'm grateful. I went last week to pick up food for a party and got to "talk story" with the owner for a little bit. She bought out Hana Market so owns both businesses. She set up a kitchen in the front part of the store that she cooks out of and the rest is still a little liquor/grocery store. Choi's is another one of my "go to's" for pot lucks and parties or dinner if I'm craving Korean food. She still has 2 party packs available. Each is enough for 4-6 people. Party pack #1 bbq chicken, beef, fried mandoo and choice of chicken katsu or meat jun. This includes rice and vegetables for $56 this one is my favorite! I usually order her famous spinach tofu salad with her homemade dressing that is addictive! I love to support this one woman operation, her prices have gone up a little over the years but her portions are large and generous. I'll always be back the Korean food is delicious!

Combo #4 Meat Jun and Kalbi ($16.50)
    Ryan M.

They have now moved to McCully street into a small market. I got combo 4 (Kalbi and meat Jun) $16.50, Pork jun ($14.50) and Spinach Tofu Salad ($11.80) The food is similar but different. The kalbi is no longer the one large bone type thats filleted out, but the 3 bones that are sliced thinner like most places offer. I get it prices are on the rise and the need keep prices fair, it was still tender but not the same and i wish it was cut thinner. The other thing i noticed is that the pork jun is really thick now, it used to be thin like the meat jun. Its still very tender probably because of baking soda, but I prefer them thinner cut, more surface area and batter ratio. The meat jun is still very good, probably one of the best on the island, i think cooked in the deep frier. Thinly sliced, tender and nice crispy badder. The tofu salad is still killer, so simple but yet so good, spinach, tofu and a wonderful mildly spicy dressing. You can buy a pint of the dressing for $8 just get your own spinach and tofu i guess. The dressing has korean chili pepper flakes and sesame oil, those are the only 2 ingredients i can figure out. Its not too spicy but its very tasty. The sides are nothing too special but i liked the kim chee cabbage it was the fresh type with kimchee flavor, not really the traditional fermented type. Since the kalbi is not the special big bone type anymore I'll probably go for the Lunch Special (12.80) BBQ beef, BBQ chicken, and meat jun. Also gotta ask what the CHOIS SPECIAL for $28.90 is.

Park by McCully Buffet, walk into Hana Market

Recently moved to inside HANA MARKET on McCully Street, parking in the McCully Buffet lot, this take-out-only hole-in-the-wall is my new favorite. The BBQ chicken is really good, actually everything is really good. The zucchini tempura, meat jun, & tofu salad are my fave. I like to put the tofu salad sauce on everything, and apparently others must too, because you can buy a pint of that sauce separately. The menu I posted is old pricing so you just have to guess how much your bill will be or ask ahead of time so you're not surprised. The family pack is the best bang for your buck. Get that if you aren't sure what to try and you have a family to feed. It says feeds 5 ppl but it'll feed way more unless you're all hungry football players.

These guys are now in a little market on McCully. Park in the lot next door that they share w mcully bbq. Kitchen is small but still Churns out some of the best Korean bbq on the island. I usually get the combo 2 or 4 depending on if I want meat Jun or bbq chicken w my kalbi. Can't go wrong w any of these. Ton of food to feed 2 normal people or one really hungry person

We have great news, we're having a baby! Oh wait, that's not supposed to go on Yelp! But in similar news, Choi's family restaurant has moved from its long time King Street location to McCully, sharing space with Hana Market in a take-out only format. So apparently the guy who owns Hana Market is sibling of the woman who owns and runs Choi's family restaurant (or that's what he told me while I was waiting). I'm guessing due to COVID pressures, he allowed her to move her eatery into his shop. Be prepared for some sibling fighting/banter in Korean when you're there. Words of advice, call in your order. Do not go there and then order, seriously just don't. The place is an enormous amount of chaos in a tiny, tiny, tiny space. I was dodging the woman and her assistant who are moving at 150 mph who run the eatery as were other patrons in the tiny shop. Call your order in and pick it up a little after when you're told it will be ready to minimize your time in that whirlpool of frantic energy. It's also a bit confusing who you pay, but you pay the hana market cashier who then confirms that you paid. Parking is a bit of a mess, as you either park on the street, or grab a stall in the shared lot with McCully Buffet. Turn right heading south down McCully street as the half of the lot is one way only. Now, what you're really after: the food is the same, the menu is the same, and the prices are the same, which explains the constant stream of customers picking up food. Try it once and you'll join the following. I got my regular BBQ chicken, which came with the regular two scoops rice, lots of kimchee, beansprouts, pickled cabbage, and a truckload of delicious BBQ chicken. I like how Choi's gives a significantly more amount of meat than other Korean BBQ places. Like I said, try it once and you'll join the following. So, I'm not exactly thrilled by this new location as opposed to the former South King Street place, but I'm still coming, because once you go to Choi's, you'll never patron another Korean BBQ place again.

Big bone Kalbi and daikon Kim chee
    Candice C.

Choi's is always our go-to spot for the best Big Bone Kalbi on Oahu! Can't beat it!!! You can order the Kalbi as a side or full order. We normally get a side order and cook rice at home then add on either a side of bbq chicken or the spinach and tofu salad which is large enough to charge with 2-4 people. We've been hooked on their kimchi daikon which isn't too spicy, even for my husband who normally not tolerate spice. Everything there is amazing! Parking can be a little tricky because the McCully Buffet restaurant customers tend to park there even though there are two designated stalls for Hana market and Choi's. Tip: Place a phone order since parking is limited Note: the price of the Kalbi did go up, but it's still worth every penny!

Quick service and still the best kalbi on Oahu! Their big bone kalbi is always worth the drive! Decided on take out for dinner so off to Choi's it was! Ordered the meat jun, kalbi, and mandoo combo. Everything was hot and fresh! If you're craving the best kalbi on Oahu, you need to try this place! Great hidden gem next to another amazing place Kyung's!

Ate here for the first time. I ordered the family pack #1 which includes bbq chicken, bbq beef, fried mandoo, and a choice of chicken katsu or meat jun all for $49. This pack feeds about 5-6 people. I assumed this was all I was getting so I cooked rice prior to picking the food up only to find out that it comes with a large container of rice, a large container of mixed veggies, some kind of meat jun or mandoo sauce, and a small container of kimchee. The meats were a bit dry like they've been slightly over cooked, but the flavor was on point and you can't beat the price for this amount of food. I love to smash food and I couldn't even eat a lot of it. The staff are friendly and fast. I phone ordered and it took about 20mins to pick up. Due to these Covid-19 times, only take out was allowed and you have to enter through their backdoor to pick up your order for some reason. There's a bit of street parking and they also have this small parking lot behind them, but unless you have an average sized vehicle, you may have a hard time turning into their driveway. This restaurant is located on King Street right across the street from Easy Music Center and next to the Trophy House.

Ask the Community - Choi's Family Restaurant

Yelp has Choi's Family Restaurant as take out and "delivery". When I called the restaurant to double check, they said no delivery service. Does anyone know if they do deliver, and which service doe it? The owner did not understand what I meant.

Hi there - we used DoorDash to receive delivery. Hope you enjoy as much as we did!

I think people might be Yelp reviewing to different places bc there are two restaurants with the word Choi's in the name on king street and both are fairly close to each other...is there a way to sort it correctly?

One is called Choi Family Restaurant personally that's the one I go to , the other one is called Choi kitchen both on King.St.. I believe if your heading down King.St Choi Family Restaurant come first than the other one.

One thing we noticed right away was that it was pretty warm inside. I'm not sure if the A/C wasn't on yet or if it was having issues, but it's something to keep in mind if you're visiting during the day. We waited about 5 minutes at the front without seeing any staff or receiving a greeting. Eventually, a server rushed in through the door and was clearly scrambling to get everything set up. After another 5 minutes, she finally seated us. She apologized and explained that the person who was supposed to open didn't show up, so she had to cover everything herself. Throughout our visit, several parties who arrived after us also ended up waiting 10 minutes or more to be seated. That was really the only downside of our experience. The server was doing her best under the circumstances, and it seemed like an unfortunate staffing issue rather than the norm. Now for the food--it was excellent! We originally came for the $5.99 naengmyeon special, and it was absolutely worth it. We also shared the spicy pork and the meat jun, and both dishes were surprisingly delicious. Everything was flavorful, and the portions were satisfying. Overall, I'd definitely come back. Despite the rough start, the food made up for it, and I'm hopeful the staffing situation was just a one-off. Hopefully they'll also get the A/C situation sorted out because that would make the dining experience even better.

Had to call and up the count on our reservation twice, female did that well. They put us in the far back corner and it was warm. Female did come and turn the fan on after a little while, explaining the AC was broken. Fan did help, but I was near the fan. I don't think it reached the folks farther in (there were 8 of us). Three of us ordered the stone pot bibimbap with bulgogi. One wanted to sub BBQ chicken, was told, "no." She had to change her order since she doesn't eat beef. Friend later told me she had been accommodated before, but these seemed to be new owners.) Two ordered BBQ Chicken plates, one the stir fried squid, one kimchee fried rice, one meat jun, a fish jun. Ban Chan came - two sets (one per table of four) of bean sprouts, fish cake, Choi sum, potatoes, kimchee. They were good. Cold water was served, and after a while we were given a pitcher so we could refill our cups, which was good. Food didn't take overly long to come out but wasn't really quick. (There were only two servers and the restaurant filled up quickly.) Stone pot bibimbap flavor was a disappointment. Only gochujung sauce to add, no sesame seed oil, so it was bland. Both of us who got it didn't think it was very tasty. Otherwise, it was nice and hot, and there was plenty of crispy rice after mixing it all up, and it included a raw egg which added some flavor, but not much. I will not get it again. Those with the BBQ chicken said it was tasty and juicy. Meat jun and fish jun was ok. Kimchee fried rice and stir fried squid were very spicy. Flavor was ok. Had to ask for our checks, were told they had only two staff working so they were very busy, but they kindly accommodated four separate checks for the eight of us. Not sure if I'll return. Prices are reasonable for the portion size, but no AC, bland stone pot bibimbap, we're not to my liking.

The premium AYCE option is around $60 per person, which would be reasonable if the quality matched the price. Unfortunately, it doesn't. We're from the Bay Area and have been to countless Korean BBQ restaurants with significantly better meat quality for the same price or less. To make matters worse, even at the highest-priced AYCE tier, fountain drinks aren't included. What really left a bad impression was the automatic 20% gratuity. Our group consisted of two separate parties of three people each. We were seated together at one large table with two grills, but we had separate bills, ordered different AYCE meats option, didn't share food, and made that CLEAR before ordering. The menu states that automatic gratuity applies to parties of five or more, yet we were still charged because we happened to sit together. Had we known this was their policy, we would have chosen another restaurant or sat at different areas of the restaurant. The reason I'm giving two stars instead of one is because our servers were friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. They answered all of our questions about the menu and provided excellent service throughout the meal. Unfortunately, when we brought the gratuity issue to the manager, he insisted we were one large party despite us being separate parties with separate orders and separate checks. At the end of the day, the only difference was that we happened to be sitting at the same table. Overall, the service from the staff was great, but the overpriced food, disappointing meat quality, and questionable gratuity policy make it hard for me to recommend this place.
