BBQ Chicken (no rice, with bean sprouts, mayo potato & spinach) - VN
    Vince N.

We had a Yummy Korean BBQ on Maui years ago which turned into a Pearl's Korean BBQ, so I was curious to see how similar or different they are. ATMOSPHERE: They're part of the beehive AKA the Makai Market Food Court at Ala Moana Center. Seating is indoor communal. They're so busy they have dual ordering lines. MENU: Korean BBQ in a variety of proteins. FOOD: BBQ Chicken They gave 3 boneless/skinless thighs that were flavorful, moist and grilled nicely with a nice char here and there. As for the banchan or sides, the bean sprouts had green onions and carrots mixed in which was odd. The mayo potatoes were comparable. But, they have something Pearl's doesn't (on Maui, anyway) which is Korean spinach, and it was good. The portion size between the two businesses are comparable, meaning generous! SERVICE: Food is made to order and took about a quick 5 minutes. Ladies at the counter were very friendly. OVERALL: I guess it's a tie.

The sides: rice, garlic spinach and japchae

This has been my go to place at the Ala Moana shopping center for about 20 years. It's always on point, the meat is cooked to order, and the service never got any better. The ladies there always acting like they don't like you and don't want to be there. lol But the food is worth it.

Was looking for some good cold noodles. The ala Moana center? Yes. Looked at all the restaurants in the food court and by passing all the food in warming pans for something fresh. Yummy had Korean cold noodles. Hubby had the bi bim bop and I had the bi bim kook su. Got our food after a bit of a wait. They make each order fresh. Excellent believe it or not. Delicious. I'm Korean and the veggies were fresh, tasty, and reminded me of my mom's noodles. Packed with bulgogi, pickles, spinach, kim chi, radish and a sweet savory spicy sauce. The bi bim bop was also delicious as well. All in all really good. Location is the location.

So this unassuming spot inside of the Ala Moana food court is great! I got the combination Meat Jun and Kalbi that comes with four vegetable sides with two scoops of rice, a ton of food! They have two food lines that they open up when it is really busy. We waited about 5 minutes for the food to be ready, mostly due to the time it takes to make the meats. Meats: The meat jun is actually really delicious, it is very thinly sliced marinated beef dipped in an egg batter that is then pan-fried, a Hawaiian fusion on Korean BBQ. One of my friends grew up eating it in Hawaii all their life and was astonished that it didn't exist outside of Hawaii. I really enjoyed it and the Kalbi - very good! Sides: For sides I got the Japchae, mac salad and two orders of the kimchi. I liked the kimchi but isn't a traditional taste, a little milder and almost sweeter from what I recall. I didn't like the mac salad as much as I thought I would, I probably wouldn't get that again. I would totally go here again! It is good Korean food with a Hawaiian twist.

The food court in Ala Moana is an overwhelming place with so many options but one that stood out to me was Yummy Korean BBQ as I was after something very specific, Meat Jun. What is Meat Jun you ask? Meat jun is a Korean-Hawaiian fusion dish made of thinly sliced marinated beef that's coated in flour, dipped in an egg batter, and pan-fried until golden brown. It is uniquely delicious that gives you an egg battered meat that fills you up fast. The sides were also delicious of the potatoes and vegetables. I was stuffed with this meal and for the price I felt that it was great value. Service can take a while as everything is made to order. Give it a try if you are at Ala Moana Food Court.

The food has gone down hill. I could only eat a little of it, even though I was hungry.

I've been patronizing Yummy Korean BBQ for a long time and it's one of my Go-to places for fast local style Korean food. It's conveniently located in the Ala Moana food court which can get pretty crowded at times but has otherwise been remodeled very nicely. They have very good variety of different dishes and all of the side options are displayed for you to choose from (such great variety as well!). Some of my favorites include meat Jun and the potato side. The portions are also large and in most cases a mini size is good for me, and the prices are decent. The food took about 10 minutes and they are pretty efficient in their service. Yummy Korean BBQ definitely lives up to its name!

Tried Kalbi and Katsu here and both were good. The portion was big just like other Korean plate lunches so it can be split between 2 people. Side dishes were good. Good selections of veggies. Service can be slow and sometimes may have to wait for a while. Otherwise it is still a good choice among other eateries at the Ala Moana food court.

Meat jun $18.95 -2 pieces no rice

Yummy was our go-to every time we went to Ala Moana. So I decided to pick up my dad's fav fish jun plate to surprise him for dinner. So disappointed that the employee heard my order wrong and gave me meat jun instead. (And I didn't bother looking at my receipt) Veges were good but the meat jun was thin and dry. And 2 pieces for $18.95! I thought the regular plates used to come with 3 pieces because the mini plates had 2 pieces. Maybe shrinkflation hit these plates too.

Visiting my family in Hawaii and reminded me of going to high school and getting Meat Jun for lunch, but only having enough time to get it, come back, and eat it in class. Definitely still tasted good but had better. We went close to closing so that's probably why. Still ate all of it! The veggies were always my fav! Have to get the seaweed and broccoli!

First time trying Meat Jun! Flavor was there especially with the sauces but the meat was super thin and hard to taste. I was told some places can do it thicker which sounds good. The sides were on point though as I was craving some veggies and the broccoli and seaweed had lots of good flavor. Service was fairly quick as the mall was packed on a Friday night.

Haven't had Yummy's since moving away in 2009 and I'm happy to report not much has changed (except pricing of course). I don't remember combo plates coming with FOUR sides but I'm here for it! Shoyu potato, japchae, bean sprouts...tender spicy pork...I really wish Yummy's would open a location in Seattle. *hint hint*

I wish we had this type of food court option back in California! It's simple -- order what kind of meat you want and then you get to choose 4 sides (plus free rice). With so many side options, I was extremely excited! I got the jap chae, bean sprout, leafy green, and cabbage. All the veggies were yummy but the jap chae was my favorite. The pork itself was tender, but on the salty side. I didn't want to eat too much, since it was a lot. Paired with a bit of rice and some sides would be the perfect bite. The ladies working up front were nice and very quick! Great concept, maybe just lighter on the flavoring.

The guava bar was delicious and flavorful and just crumbles in your mouth! Definitely one of the better guava bars I've tried. Love how crumbly it is. The salmon belly was delicious OMFG. It looks so simple and straightforward but that sht is so flavorful. It is crispy and yet soft on the inside. The salmon belly is cut into bite-sized pieces so I didn't have to worry about using a knife to cut it. I usually try salmon belly where it is usually seasoned lightly to bring out the natural flavor of the salmon, but Guava Smoked's salmon belly is just grilled in a way that makes the salmon sweet/crispy and still get traces of the salmon taste as well. It's definitely not your traditional Japanese-style way of cooking salmon belly but really just their own. I'd go back and get this again. Another thing too. I'd get this with beer. This would hit very hard with alcohol but because I don't drink I need a kombucha. The grilled salmon belly would go perfect with it. Cheers! Uncle was very helpful and kind when serving and if you dine-in he brings it to your table.

The meat is reasonably high quality, the banchan is generous (the last few times I went they even had poke as a banchan included with the meal), and the service is friendly. The "kimchee soup" is one of my favorite kimchee jjigaes on the island. Refills of meat flow generously out of the kitchen, unlike some other AYCE experiences where each subsequent order gets smaller and smaller until they finally cut you off because you've reached the time limit. I only have one gripe. While each table has a very powerful burner for grilling the meat, their universal approach is to prop up a tilted cast iron plate over the fire to grill on. It's propped at an angle so that the oil flows into a catch pan on the side. This usually means that the half of the plate tilted closer to the fire gets really hot, while the other half struggles to get hot enough and risks just boiling your meat. It also makes adjusting the fire a tricky process - if there's a lull between meats coming to your table, someone might come by and, understandably, turn down your flame. That's fine, but when the food does come out, it takes a long time to get the cast iron hot again. This doesn't stop me from coming back for more here, but just one thing I wish was better about an otherwise great experience. There is a parking lot out front but it is cramped and usually fills up. There is usually someone helping to guide parking, but when it's completely full there's only so much they can do. Street parking in the area can also be a little bit tricky.

This place makes their soondae in house as I can tell the difference with frozen soondae and non-frozen ones. Until I go to Korea to try the real thing, this is the best I can get. The aunties here are still very nice but as always give grace because it does get busy here and one aunty would have to take care of multiple tables and party size as well. Overall I'll be coming here whenever I need my soondae fix!! If you haven't tried, definitely come and try! I still need to try the acye here with friends one day!
