I came to Float to see a DJ I adore ($20 tickets) but the venue was pretty average. There is a tall staircase that you have climb before getting to the roof. A vodka strawberry slushie drink was $18 (not incl. tip). There was a street taco vendor on one side (1 taco for $8 and 3 tacos for $18). Benches and cocktail tables lined one side, but it was pretty crowded. I was able to go to the pool area, but there were so many people (prob hotel guests) that it was not worth it to stay. On a more positive note, the staff and security were friendly. They also set out jenga and a ping pong table. In terms of stage/production, the speakers were not loud enough. If you are an avid concert go-er and enjoy all things production, I would not recommend. read more

TERRIBLE! (This is my first negative Yelp review). I'm not even going to say I'm "mad" at Float, because I'm actually just disappointed. Our Bachelorette party reserved a Daybed, and spent roughly 6 hours at the pool and well over $1,000. We saw our server MAYBE twice. The only reason we were able to order drinks was because we had an attentive bar back, Brian Bilotta. Meanwhile, our server never put in two of our food orders and forgot to serve us several drinks. Our group ended up making a game out of it to see if our server or Brian would show up faster with a the drink! And 75% of the time, the server never put in our order. Long story short, Float should not require a minimum/reservation and a 22% gratuity when the service isn't even up to par with a fast food chain. PS- I asked a gentleman on the way out about his experience, and he said "why do they have 10 security guards for every one waitress?" First time here. We were Betsy's +10 on her Meetup guest list. The process to getting in reminded me so much like Vegas... Bouncers/Security everywhere thinking their important LOL Anywho FloatSD is beautiful. They have a casual vibe setup. Nice view of the convention center and the gaslamp area. I love it. FloatSD was just a little too dark... Like the power went out. The place is nice with the little Firepit and loungy couch -- turn up the light a little so people can appreciate it the setup. The music was great... I think it was 90s/80s music night. The music brought back so much memories from my talent show days -- I busted out my dance routine to Mariah Carey's Fantasy! The meetup event included FREE DRINKS from 9-10pm! Can't complain... Except the fact that it was Weak... Couldn't taste the vodka however I still got a good buzz. Rooftop bar fun! Float is above the Hard Rock Hotel, where intervention is held during summertime! This is a fun spot, especially on warm evenings. Holiday and summertime usually create long lines and covers, during low peak time there's no cover and the line doesn't exist which is nice. Seating is located at the bottle service areas, however is seating is available when the VIP areas are not reserved. They play good music with the DJ's they have here! My friends and I stop by this place after several others for drinks. The atmosphere here is nice. Decor is amazing with the ambient light and the hue on the trees was pretty cool. There is a pool side for dippers. I said dipper due to the ginormous size of the pool. You probably have enough room for a 10-15 people to dip in, no swim. There are several cabanas, couches and beds for you to lounge around as well. When we went, it wasn't crowed which was nice. It was mellow and had a nice soft vibe to it. Fire pits were a plus. What threw me off, in a good way, was the serving of mini donuts. Yeap! They straight up had a donut section. My friends were all over that. Love this place and will look forward to coming back to hangout/catch up with friends. FYI, I've read several of the 2 stars and below reviews. Most of them are personal, one off, experiences which shouldn't deter you from visiting this establishment. A lot of the reviewers hardly have any positive reviews for other establishments. I've been to Altitude lounge before and I really liked it so I was looking for another place that was similar and came across Float. It's located on the rooftop of the Hard Rock Hotel and it has gorgeous views of the Convention Center. We came around 11pm on Friday and there was no line and no cover charge. There's not many people which I like. I'm not really a big fan of pushing and shoving ha ha. I love the way the place is lit up with outdoor dim lighting. There's several couches and firepits near the bar and since there weren't a lot of people they were mostly vacant which was nice. I can picture this to be a really nice place to take a date since you'll have an awesome view and it's really intimate! Great for a relaxing bar amidst the crazy nightlife downtown. read more

Intervention: Sundays from 11am to sunset. Float is a outdoor club located at the roof top of the Hard Rock Hotel. On Sundays they have what they call "Intervention". Well I gave Float 3 stars for a number of reason based on my type of club/bars. I'm more of a dive bar / inexpensive beer type of guy. Hello North Park!!! I went to "Intervention" on a Sunday and let me tell you the cost for going to Float/Intervention. It'll cost you $20 to get in. If you're carrying a bag that's bigger than your shoe well expect to pay $5 to check it in. Once you get upstairs you'll notice a pool, a couple of bars and a lawn area with multiple beds and seating @ a price of course. They also have a VIP area. Well the group of friends I went with paid for the bottle service at one of the beds in the lawn area. Each bottle of Grey Goose Vodka runs about $355 per bottle, of course. They ended up paying almost $1500 for four bottles. CRAZY!!! The service is great cause you get your own personal bartender in a bikini. Now like I said, a bottle of vodka will cost you roughly $355. If you'd like to get a beer at the bar it'll cost you about $9. Check this out??? For a pitcher of margarita or any kind of daqari.........$120........for a pitcher!! That's freakin' ridiculous!!! A shot, depending on what you order, will cost you about $12. And get this, an order of chicken tenders or fries mixed cost $35 to $40. On the contrary, if you're looking for a whole lot of girls in tiny bikini's that make you wonder if it was a "hand me up" from their little sister or a guys with ripped muscles and most likely a little bit of nudity and soft porn then Float/Intervention is the place for you. As for me I'm gonna stick with my little dive bars that I like to tend to. Anyway, for the amount of money one would spend to have bottle service for the day at Float I could probably get half of North Park and Ruggy drunk. Oh boy, this wasn't my scene. Staying at the Hard Rock, I first meandered up here on a Friday afternoon to check out the Hard Rock's pool. Imagine my surprise when I saw a tiny pool with about 25 guys in it and 3 girls in it. Plus, there are only cabanas or tables to reserve to sit at. No lounge chairs or individual seats; everything is group seating. You do have views of convention center. So, this isn't a place to lounge by the pool; it's more bar/pool party. As a Hard Rock guest, they give you a VIP pass to get into their bars without waiting in line and no cover before 10pm. Further, they put a message in the room, warning you to get there early because it gets very busy. Stopped by here at 10:15pm on a Friday night and there were around 15 people here, total. Seriously. Friend and I had a drink (cosmopolitan); about $14. We left after that. Saturday around noon, friend and I returned, only to find it was some sort of "club Saturday" meaning you have to be over 21 to attend (annoyed my friend, because her kids were there and wanted to use pool; hard rock front desk gave her passes to Hilton pool for her kids). At Special events, ALL seats are by reservation. That's right, unless you have a reservation, you will be standing on a Saturday afternoon, by the pool with no shade, on a hot 90 degree day. Yeah, I was done . But I did find one positive, staff was very friendly. Door men and bartenders were helpful with any questions or quick to get my drinks. read more

2.5... VIP Post-Party for RnR athletes at the Hard Rock Rooftop Lounge. Hosted cocktails for an hour then they were going to open up the lounge for the public at 10p. There wasn't much in attendance given it was a Sunday night. After checking your name off the list, you would have to climb 2 flights of stairs to the rooftop lounge. TIP: Don't ever ask a runner to climb up stairs following a race - What were they thinking? EVERYONE was stumbling up and down the stairs and holding on to the rail for dear life. My knees and thighs were definitely hurting, and the stairs made it worse!!! Unfortunately, the hosted drinks were only beer and Skyy Vodka mixed drinks. YUCK... I only ended up with a Cran/Vodka to ease the joint/muscle pain away. I LOVE ROOFTOP LOUNGES!!! I have to admit, the lounge is pretty nice. I like all the couches, firepits and the outdoor cabanas. Float is on my top 10 list of bars to hit in the Gaslamp, especially during the week. I like to bring my out of town visitors here and sit around the outside fire pits, enjoy the sounds and Downtown air and relax in their comfy couch like settings while enjoying my favorite drink. I have never been here on the weekend (Friday or Saturday) and I am sure this place is popular since it is located atop the Hard Rock Hotel. I've found that during the week, even when conventions are in town, it's never over-run, too busy and there is always a place to sit. Great drinks, expect the usual Downtown prices and the service is nice. Again, when did i become a fuddy-duddy?! I don't go downtown as often - but when i do, it's mostly to Altitude and JBar. So naturally, I like these roof top bars. I've heard mixed reviews about Float but never wanted to wait in line/pay the cover to get in. Cue my college friends in town who are staying at the Hard Rock. I guess w/ a room key, you get to bypass the line and pay no cover. So +1 there. Bouncer guys were awesome - friendly, funny. It didn't seem that busy last Fri night so maybe that had something to do w/ it. Float is on the 4th floor of the hotel. Um...ok. What kinda view are we gonna get on the 4th floor (compared to the 20something floor Altitude is on). I guess it has a nice view of the convention center but I didn't notice much more than that. Drinks were ok - about $11 each. Decent pour in a nice tall glass but nothing extraordinary. I appreciated that Mr Bartender didn't charge me for my diet coke :) Bottom line, the ppl (especially the girls) were not what i expected at all. Don't get me wrong - I've been girls dressed/dolled up to go out to the gaslamp but NOTHING compares to what i saw at Float that night. I'll leave it at that. Came here for a bachelorette weekend and this is probably not going to give you a "best time of your life" type of experience. To be fair, our bride to be is more relaxed so the intention of coming here was to enjoy the beautiful weather with awesome music and drinks, which we did. However, there are somethings I picked up on that I think might be helpful for someone else looking for a great place to go with the girls. 1. This place definitely has a middle aged crowd. My group consisted of sorority sisters ages 22-29, so even for a chill vibe it was a bit too mature. No one really danced they just sat around the fire and looked at one another. Lol ...however, a few of the girls from my group had no problem dancing alone. 2. The music is OKAY. The DJ played play music but nothing that would make anyone want to twerk. So if you're looking for that type of night, this is not the place for you. 3. Drinks are actually not that bad. I had a tequila sunrise and it was only $10. Overall, it's a beautiful lounge. The fire pit is a nice touch. It's small but spacious. The drinks are yummy and the service was great as well. My rating is simply based on the overall experience we had which was GREAT. I went for my friend's birthday, and was still hungover from the night before, so water was my drink of choice. I think part of the reason I am giving Float a 3 is because of the prices, like others have said. I mean, why $7 for a can of corona? Why $12 for a shot or for a gin and tonic? REALLY? I mean, yea, its in downtown, but come on! I love my dives and happy hours, and downtown just seems like the place to show off and throw away your money... BUT, that said, Float is a really cool, chill place. The background music is great and lets you talk with your friends comfortably. The big sofas are super comfy, and being outside while staring at a fire-pit in the middle of downtown adds to the charm. I have to say I really enjoyed myself, but the actual alcohol part annoys me. We were staying at the Hard Rock Hotel this weekend and decided to visit the Float Rooftop Lounge located within the hotel. It's located on the 4th floor, but still provides a nice view of surrounding buildings, etc. Our hostess, Cindy, was extremely sweet and attentive right from the start. The drinks were good, but most importantly we loved the ambiance. We were sitting in front of a fire pit, which made the experience extra fun. It wasn't really busy, which was pretty surprising for us because there probably wouldn't be standing room if this lounge was located in LA. Overall, we don't have any complaints. It's a very pretty lounge with great customer service. Highly recommend giving this place a try! read more

It's been several months since I've been to Hard Rock and I forgot how fantastic Float is! I'm over intervention and that's actually over for now anyway, the 207 club downstairs is a younger crowd and a lot of crazy people but Float is a classier and more sophisticated crowd. It's beautiful up there, I know it's been remodeled recently and first off you've got the beautiful weather in SD so it's warm which people worry about when going to a roof top bar. There's tons of comfy couches surrounded by fire places and heaters. It's a place where you can sit, stand, chit chat and dance. This past Friday it was rockin, the music was fantastic and the dj played all the hit songs out right now, he was fabulous! It was a warm evening, people were dancing and it was all around just a good night. Yeh drinks are a little costy, around $11 for a basic drink like a captain and coke or a vodka tonic but no pricier than any other place downtown and much cheaper than the rooftop bar at Andaz/Ivy. The staff are friendly, the bathrooms are nice and if you feel like dancing til the wee hours of the night and want bottle service you can head downstairs to 207. This will be a great place to go to in the summer to grab a drink and sit poolside or enjoy listening to great music on a nice summer evening. read more

Our company hosted a welcome reception and while the entire area w/the fire pits and couches is really nice I was bit disappointed by the drink selection. This is a good venue I've visited mainly when on business trips and companies host private parties here, so it's then closed to the public. It's a great venue for those looking to host an event and rent out a nice large space with outdoor seating, fire pits (if at night) and comfortable seating. What a fantastic place with great views of the Convention Center, the Omni hotel, the red trolleys and the famous Gaslamp sign. Very chic and hip rooftop with posh cabanas, well taken care furniture, nice bars that do not obstruct the views. DJ Gabe Vega sounds even more awesome in this location! The pool is perfect size and the jacuzzi a bit small, yet still too much fun. I recommend this place for a private party. It can get very crowded and lines get too long, but it is one of the best rooftops of San Diego and service/music/atmosphere is fantastic. read more

My friends and I were guests of this hotel over the Memorial Day weekend. We rented a daybed by the pool that Sunday, where we paid over $1,000. Shortly into the day a friend fell off of a floatie into the water while trying to take a picture. We were laughing and having a good time, until a man who I assume was a manager of sorts, came over and scolded us as if we were children. We are all well into our 30's and 40's. He told us we'd better turn it down several notches if we wanted to stay. I apologized to him and told him we meant no disrespect. He walked away to a group by another day bed and they all began looking and laughing at our group. This was embarrassing. He then used the servers as his friends' personal assistants, the servers never came back to check in on us. As a person who works in the industry, I understand the importance of maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all; however this reaction from this manager and his demeanor were uncalled for. It seemed like he took pride in attempting to demean us in front of his friends. He was very arrogant and insulting and because of this one man, we will not be attending this pool again. read more

Twice I have put myself on the list for Intervention, and twice I have been turned away. Now, I am a seasoned clubgoer. I know to get there early, dress appropriately, double-check what time the list closes. The first time I tried to go to Intervention, I was told that the list had closed (it was 12:00pm and the email confirmation that I had said the list closed at 2:00pm). Unfortunately I didn't have the confirmation with me. The second time I thought I was being smart. I got there at 11:30am. Dressed up. Printed out my email confirmation from DJhere. I walked to the front and asked the bouncer which line to stand in for the list. I was told "there is no list." I showed him my email, gave him my name. He did a quick glance over his clipboard and repeated "there is no list." I even emailed DJhere (Crystal) after the event and calmly told her what had happened. No response. Free booze until 10pm, it was really busy though and even when it hit a little pass 10, the bartender was a bit nice to let us still get our drinks in for free since he was swamp. I also came here for a Singles Masquerade event, and it turned out okay. What I do not like about Float is that there is no place to dance...more of a lounge. The crowd is a decent crowd. 3 work trips to San Diego, 3 lunches here at Float, and 1 night out with colleagues. On the days where I had lunch, I didn't have much option to go elsewhere. I was setting up the obstacle course outside on the Woodstock area. While the menu was limited, everything I tried each time was good - the fish tacos, the bbq chicken pizza, and the quesadilla. The bar staff during the day were very helpful. It was also a GORGEOUS setting - roof top in Dwtn San Diego. We did go out as a group for drinks here. I'm not sure what the fees were because one of our managers purchased drinks for us (so nice), but the drinks were decent. The music was lame though. No wonder no one was dancing. They were destroying songs with a beat into these strange morphs without a beat. No wonder no one was on the dance floor. They could use a little more selection on their menu, and the charges for sitting down by the pool or having bottle service at night were rediculous. Who invented this whole bottle service crap anyway? When did a bar start selling a bottle with a few side things you can mix, make you create your own drinks and for those prices? GEESE! I've only been to the recent Grand Opening Shitshow featuring Paul Oakenfold and tequila. However, judging by the rumor mill, what I experienced was pretty standard for an Intervention. As I suspected, Hard Rock Intervention is similar to AE's Intervention (high probability of rehab in the near future) but with more happy endings (pun intended). The patrons look like they walked right out of an iTan advertisement or for the unlucky few, a TJ plastic surgeon's office. The venue and music can best be described as winning, and your likelyhood of motorboating someone teeters on the positive end. Here's a list to better help you understand the experience: Things that are rude: The walkover/line- You're forced to parade down several Gaslamp blocks wearing a standard SD-pool party outfit which consists of SPF 35 and a smile. Local bar patrons will scream obscenities at you, and point their boners in your general direction. The price- Admittedly I didn't have to pay for my ticket, but ticket prices will seriously hinder your plastic surgery fundraising efforts. You basically have to be Jesus to walk in there for free, so fill your fanny packs with some coins. The no-purse rule- Upon entry you are forced to relinquish your arm candy and pay $5 for a ziploc bag for your belongings. Things that are not rude: Everything else. It's quite an experience, everything you'd imagine an adult pool party should be. Ample drinks, ample cleavage, ample bros with 8-packs, and even the occasional San Diego Charger or C-list celebrity. There are also a slew of after parties for those that enjoy a well-deserved Monday morning hangover with their lattes. read more

What makes Float distinctive is the terrible piss-poor service. I went here for NYE 2009 and got a VIP table with friends....but instead of being treated VIP, we were treated like we were lucky to be there. The VIP host didn't take care of us at all/didn't care once he had our money, even when we had issues with them getting confused with who was in our group. The bouncers to the VIP area were total jerks and refused to let our friends join us in the VIP area without the proper wristband. (You DO understand that the half the point of VIP tables is to make friends to bring BACK to the table, riiiight?) I would NEVER do VIP here again. Intervention in San Diego; the sub par equivalent to Rehab in Vegas. I say that with enthusiasm as this might be as close as you get to a Vegas Pool Party in San Diego. Reading some of the previous reviews, I have to say that I agree with a lot of all the typical comments. The staff is overly dickish and the prices are somewhat jacked up. I even accept the comments with the lopsided boobies, the cellulite and even all the orange skin that seems to run off with the sweat. With all that said, I still had fun because I was there to have fun. It all really doesn't matter if you're just there to enjoy yourself. Stop dwelling on the negative. P.S. Don't even think you're gonna be able to swim because my bedroom is bigger then the pool (not an exaggeration) and I'm pretty sure there's a good ratio of semen to chlorine water too. read more

Eh, I've had better, sums up Intervention this past weekend. It's not really a "pool" party. More like a bunch of people, crammed into uneven flooring, jumping up and down in the heat. The crowd was really ugly. Some of those people do not belong at day parties. I'm used to day parties being "beautiful people", and pool parties to be fun and splashing, etc. Intervention was neither of the above. I would recommend a revamp of the space to see if they can make it look nicer. read more

I came to Float on a Saturday afternoon expecting an afternoon with great music, nice sun on the rooftop and solid drinks. 5 stars for the rooftop.Great space and my friends and I found some available seating to lounge together. 2 stars for charging a $10 cover on a Saturday afternoon because we didn't have a table or cabana. This isn't Vegas. Its San Diego. There was no line when I showed up with my friends. 1 star for the service. I now know how guys feel when they go to bars. I had my cash out ready to buy my drink and time and time again the bartenders looked me over for the smelly 21 yo boys. 1 star for prices. $24 for a Double vodka soda? You are not in SF, New York or Vegas Hard Rock and the establishment is not that cool. read more

I thought this place was in between 2 and 3 stars...I'd give it a 2.5 if I could, but I'll round down since I thought this place wasn't really for me. Typical downtown parking. Luckily, there is a garage I like at 6th and L. The entrance to this place is off of 5th street. If you see the entrance on L, that's for the 207 bar. Coming off 5, you have crazy jet vents along the building blowing the restaurant, but hey if it was cold, you'd probably love the vents. Usual ID check, then inside to the cashier and a stamp. From there, it's an elevator ride up to the bar. If you try to get to the elevator entrance from the hotel side, they will turn you away unless you were already stamped. It's a nice rooftop bar, to me the majority of space was taken up with reserved couches and what not. Small dance floor area at the end of the bar and open couches to anyone. What I liked about this place was that there was plenty of seating/bench areas, so it was nice to just sit and drink. It did get a breeze which could be good or bad depending if it's cold that night. You also get a nice view of the convention center. A big negative to me here is that because it's an open rooftop bar, so all the smokers can reign free. Bleh! Pretty gross once it gets crowded. The music was only so-so, I didn't really hear anything that got me too into the dance mood. On the dance floor, some dance battle circle formed which made me think of some crappy high school dance, so that was lame in my opinion. The crowd was ok, for the guys, it was mentioned in the group that the girls were uglier than usual there HAH (I didn't say it!). Clean bathrooms, with a dang bathroom attendant...once again...I think I'm capable of turning on a faucet and grabbing towels...I dunno about the other drunk-o's though. It was "meh" to me. Weak music and crowd but I liked the scenery. read more
