Their HH menu didn't have a lot of options besides a few appetizers and small dishes. We decided to order off the regular menu instead. It's a huge disappointment when a sushi restaurant has terrible tempura. It's the equivalent of a Mexican restaurant with average or terrible chips and salsa or rice and beans. I recently visited this restaurant and I have to say that I find it to be very good. After reading the reviews from others I was a bit hesitant. I had been to the restaurant prior to it changing hands and the food was very very good. But the new owners seem to have a good presentation on their dishes. I sat at the sushi Bar both times and was served immediately and social distancing was observed. The happy hour menu does offer some good choices and the menu offers common traditional American sushi dishes. We ordered shrimp shumai, Shrimp tempura roll, the MT Fuji, that is pictured here, Agedashi, Spicy tuna roll, and miso soup. The sake is large and good for the price. The sushi roll pieces are a tad bit smaller than some other places may serve however they are very very good and worth a try. The sauce was not an authentic Japanese one(Tentsuyu) for tempura! I found two California rolls, which was very bad.I might find a better one at H.E.B. The staff was extremely pleasant as we entered and got seated immediately, our server mentioned the specials, and worked diligently to get drinks and appetizers started immediately. This was very important as we were very hungry! The restaurant is large, they do karaoke at nights! They have great collections of sake. The monkfish was okay, it prepared it differently than how I've had it, very unique, not as flavorful as I'd like. I think there's salmon was the best here, the way they marinated it with a thin slice made the texture even more delicious. ----Dearest Reader, I write with splendid news. Fort Ginza has undergone a complete renovation. Whilst the purist naysayers may disagree, this is a major upgrade. The tired and tattered interior has been completely stripped and upgraded. Half of the restaurant is now a bar and karaoke area (that still offers amazing food). I will miss Tiger behind the sushi bar, he was my main man. However, the revamped menu breaths a fresh breathe of new air into this old school joint. I will be visiting on a much more regular basis. The firecracker shrimp were phenomenal. At first glance they appeared to be underdressed, but boy was I wrong. They were PACKED with flavor. We also tried the shishito, oyster and shitake skewers. The inside decor was really nice and since I was eating alone, I sat near the sushi bar. I started with miso soup which tasted so fresh and seasoned well. The firecracker shrimp is a MUST. Very large shrimps and the sauce was perfect, not too spicy at all. And I absolutely loved the Houston roll, which had eel and shrimp tempura inside. The sever was so nice and very attentive as well. Takeout order experience. Arrived shortly after the 25 min estimate provided over the phone. Waited an additional 25 min. In a limited capacity dining room, was told the chef was too busy. Arrived home to find that the spicy chopped scallop nigiri came disassembled and was a DIY project. Not sure if that was their way of being cute about it, or simply the chef being "too busy" to assemble the rest of our meal, but it was completely unexpected and did no favors imo. At first I thought we were getting more scallop this way, but the lump of scallop turned out to be half a pear underneath. The sashimi combo came with some nice cuts of fish, but for $36, leaves much to be desired. I found myself eating the garnishes at the end. Good thing I had half a pear from earlier... This is not the Ginza of old. It has new owners, has been remodeled and a completely new menu. If you like seeing fish and chips on the sushi specials, this place is for you. The nigiri cuts are on the small side for the price. The spicy edamame was delicious but I also had to swallow the $7.00 price point for soy beans. I went in planning to order the spicy yellowtail sashimi, but it didn't exist. The new version comes with honey, candied jalapeño and other things that ruin the fish taste. I will miss you old Ginza. I checked out Ginza Japanese Restaurant with a friend for Houston Restaurants Week. Ginza is located in a shopping center right off of San Felipe and super close to my old apartment. The parking lot was pretty busy but there were several open spots on a Wednesday evening. As you walk in, there's a bar area and then a sit-down area. I will say the lighting is pretty bright so I'd dim the lights a little bit. It would create some ambiance. Part of why we chose Ginza for HRW is because they were offering a four-course meal for $35. Yes, please! Miso soup (4/5): you can't really mess this one up. Pretty much tastes the same as every other miso soup I've ever had at a Japanese restaurant. Ahi tuna nachos (5/5): love the creativity here! Take six "nachos", really more of a wonton, and stack some cubed tuna and spices and you have a unique dish. Beef with rice (5/5): I forget the name of this dish but it was basically marinated beef with a nice sweetness to it, served with rice, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The meat was tender and flavorful. Lemon tart dessert (3/5): I wasn't a huge fan of this dessert, though the crumbled graham crackers were a nice addition. Service was pretty standard and I noticed they have an awesome happy hour menu with specials on both food and drinks. I'll be back for that! read more

The proof is in the pudding as they say. I have been enjoying this Houston landmark for years. The Ginza restaurant was one of the very first Japanese restaurants opened in Houston before sushi became such a trend. The variety of quality sushi, sashimi, rolls and traditional Japanese food along with a few crowd-pleasing modern sushi rolls are what they are known best for. The Ginza Japanese Restaurant has a classic Asian décor and several private rooms if you have a group and they can host parties of up to 20 guests. Their private Tatami rooms are a great way to celebrate any special event and they provide kimonos, traditional Japan-style robes, for guests dining in their Tatami rooms. The menu at the Ginza Japanese Restaurant has so many options to choose from. On our visit we enjoyed a little bit of everything. Don't get jealous, it's just the way we roll, pun intended. Ha! I recommend you try a little bit of everything as well. It makes the experience that much better. We decided to try the Spicy Edamame, Baked Mussels, Spicy Shrimp Shumari, Shrimp Tempura Platter, Katsu Don, Fiesta Roll, Jose, Doreen Roll, Sashimi / Sushi Combo Plate and Amaeba Sushi. Everything was as fresh as it gets. I recommend you decide on the flavors you like best and order that, but my two favorites were the Fiesta Roll and the Jose Roll. You will love them both... I promise. The Fiesta Roll is built to perfection with shrimp tempura inside and topped with spicy tuna, jalapeno, avocado, mayo and crunchy crumbles. I absolutely love shrimp tempura, so that is how it all starts out. The spicy tuna and jalapeno avocado really put it over the top. If you like spice, then you will love this roll. But, understand it's not too spicy... just the right amount of heat to make your taste buds tingle. I like that! My next favorite was the Jose Roll which includes fried crawfish, spicy mayo, masago inside topped with salmon, crunchy crumbles and sereno peppers. Another spicy roll, but again, not too spicy. Everything on this roll is so fresh. You won't find the fishiness you might find at some sushi restaurants. I must say that the Ginza Japanese Restaurant has this roll down to an art. I guess that is what you get when you have been creating rolls since 1975. Practice makes perfect as they say... and that is exactly what they have perfected here at this wonderful restaurant. This is hands down the Best Japanese Restaurant in Houston, TX. If you want quality over quantity + to want to take your date to a legit place and not break the bank, then this is the place to go for you and your date's sushi fix. In terms of the quality versus the advertised prices for their daily specials that is advertised above the sushi bar, that IS FLOWN IN DAILY FROM JAPAN compared to what other Japanese restaurants are advertising for, for the same exact product in Houston is night and day difference (don't get scammed for being overcharged from the same exact thing folks), and I feel like this restaurant is being scammed for not charging higher, so folks please take advantage of this opportunity while supplies last. Kin-Madai (Golden Eye Snapper) - Normally sold at other Japanese restaurants for $13-$16 per piece at other reputable Japanese restaurants in Houston, which is the same price as O-Toro (Bluefin Tuna Belly), is sold at this place for $5 apiece. For all the folks that does not understand this bargain, Kin-Madai AKA Golden Eye Snapper, is the most prized white fish in the world, the texture is very similar to Snapper (or White Fishj) and O-Toro (creamy and buttery in texture from the Bluefin Tuna), it is so creamy, yet the texture stays in tacked. Therefore if you like O-Toro from the Bluefin Tuna and like White Fish, then this will absolutely blow your mind. If you want the full experience of having the most excellent Japanese meal experience you can ever get in Houston, then my recommendation is to sit at the sushi bar (please make reservations in advance) to take advantage of the excellent service, conversation, and meal provided by Chef Harold and do an Omakase, which is essentially a multi tasting course, with all the freshest ingredients for you and your party. This is definitely the way to go for the best experience at this restaurant. Ask for Hak to be your server for the best customer service experience. Love how attentive he is for you and your party to ensure you are taken care of. Harold, the owner and the executive chef of this restaurant have demonstrated his integrity to his customers versus being greedy and making money. Harold is the most ethical restaurant owner I have ever met, unlike other places that only care about sales and making their bottom lines, and will slap unnecessarily courses in the Omakase to charge you more when you do not need it. Cool thing about this place is, the restaurant will convert into a Karoke Bar during the weekends, so if any folks are looking for a place that will service legit food until 1AM on the weekends, then this is your spot. Genji in Houston, use to be the spot, but that place ain't shit compared to this place. If you anyone is craving some really, really, really good sushi then check this place out! I had my birthday dinner here since Japanese food and karaoke sounded like a great pairing for a celebration! Overall, the food was great, and I enjoyed how they were able to accommodate a large party of 15+ people. Large groups / parties: I would recommend this place if you are looking for a venue that easily allows people to come and go, allows reservations, and has good food and drinks. The waitress has a mobile device that allows her to check out people on the spot, which was super convenient. The only thing is that people need to remember what they ordered. Karaoke: The restaurant is sectioned into two areas. There's one area with larger tables, which seems like the primary karaoke room, but there are screens for karaoke all throughout the restaurant. I like how they have their entire song list on their website, so people aren't flipping through pages of books. It did seem like not all known songs were on there that you would find at other locations, but overall still a great list. How it works is that you put in your song request, and they play it in the order received. People take the mic when it's their song. Very similar process to Glitter Karaoke. Food: We had most of the shareables. I would agree that the chicken karaage and the gyoza were my favorite! There's a special dish that my friend's ordered, who come here frequently. I couldn't find it on their menus. It's a dish that had buttered toast, side of jam spread, side of pate spread, and diced tuna mixed with a truffle aioli I believe and topped with tobiko. Overall, the dish resembles a toast with layers of spreads and topped with raw fish. It was amazing!!! Highly recommended! Please see my photo called toast with tuna, jam, and pate for reference. Service: Service was great. They were attentive and patient with my group when ordering. People at the bar taking song requests were nice too.
