Owners are knowledgable, warm, and friendly--especially to someone who has absolutely no breadth of knowledge about sewing like me. I stopped by about half an hour before closing to ask about getting a recently bought pouch resized to fit my laptop. Even though I truly felt like a chicken walking around without it's head, the owners treated me with kindness and respect. While I felt sheepish about my request and my lack of of familiarity with all things sewing, their warmth helped me feel at ease. The shop itself is small, as is such with most mom and pop establishments, with Hossein working his magic in the back, buttons a galore in the front, fabrics in the middle, and ribbons scattered throughout. I could spend some time inspecting and exploring each and every texture and color available but didn't want to dilly dally too much before they were to go home. Overall, they were able to take on my sewing request--it was reasonably priced (I think!) and I helped myself to some paracord for a little craft project of mine. Very comfortable space with some people who are experts in their field and provide a very calm and reassuring energy. Had such a good experience that I decided to write my first Yelp review. For reference, I've been using Yelp for many many years and not once felt inclined to leave a review until I met Hossein at Gizmo Notion! I brought in a old Singer machine from the 50s to get cleaned, serviced, and brought up to running order. Immediately I was met by Hossein with a warm welcome and enthusiasm about my old machine. I live walking distance to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and yet I couldn't resolve why my Singer sewing machine had a persistent bird's nest problem. I brought my machine to Gizmo Notion and within minutes my machine was purring. Hussein explained where my problem was rooted and how to avoid future reoccurrence. Was having some frustrating issues with my Bernette sewing machine so I decided to drop it off at Gizmo for a diagnosis and tune up. Dropped it off on Monday and got a call on Tuesday from Hussein telling me it was ready to be picked up. Surpassed my expectations. Mr. Gizmo was fun to talk with. His mellow nature is precious in the city. I'm glad I stopped by. I came for special needles, for making a stuffed animal. In this small store I didn't expect much but I was wrong. While I was chatting with Mr. Gizmo at his desk/cashier/ counter, I noticed variety of noodles were hanging behind him like a wall paper. He had few choices for me. I got the one with a curved needle and some long, and some thick, straight ones all in a tight package, and a strong thread for it. Mr. Gizmo said, this thread, "Heavy" is very strong and nothing breaks it." This place is real New York. Just went here for the first time this week--my beloved sewing machine was locked up and needed some care. The shop was closed for a few days during the Easter/passover holiday when I originally went, and I decided to wait for its reopen rather than bring it to another sewing machine repair shop in the city because Gizmo has such good reviews. And boy, it was worth the wait! Hussein whipped it right back into shape in less than 2 days, and explained everything he did and went over details about caring for it....all for a very reasonable price. He is officially "my guy". This place has been here for 28 years and hopefully it stays forever. All New Yorker seamstresses should be frequenting Gizmo instead of chain stores! I've been a patron of this buisness for 19 years. Gizmo (Hussein) is an exceptionally lovely man and answers all questions patiently. He has fixed 3 of my machines and knows his stuff. Perfect for notions and needles, etc. Not sure about fabric as I always trek to garment district for that. Sometimes he opens a couple minutes late, but watching him ride up on his bicycle more then makes up for the brief wait. :) SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES! I will not give this man anything to fix I took my serger machine to him for a simple adjustment to fix and he mess it up so badly I had to take it to another repair shop to fix what he messed up. He oiled it so much it was leaking out all over the place and took my machine apart and put it back together wrong not even fixing it . He took over a month holding it just to get it back broke by him it costs me more money to have to repair, when all I needed was a tune up. DON'T BELIEVE THE OTHER REVIEWS How good he is. Hussein is a life saver! I live in New Jersey and have been sewing as a way to relieve my quarantine anxiety. My baby lock sewing machine "locked" up on me and would not sew another stitch. I called several places in New Jersey and New York and then spoke to Hussein. I drove my baby lock to NYC and left it with him. When I went back to pick it up Hussein had it running better than it has in years. He was just as happy about it as I was. I love this little store. A long time ago, the Lower East Side was full of notions stores and yarn shops, because women not only knew how to sew and knit, they had to do it for their families; they darned the socks they had knitted themselves. Now that most of our clothes are made cheaply by slaves in Malaysia and China, most people don't even know how to sew on a button. Sewing is a hobby, or maybe a means of self-expression. In fact, the fabric store on the corner is going out of business, probably another victim of high rents. Mr. Gizmo--I don't know his real name--sells, fabrics, patterns, notions, and does sewing machine repairs. (He fixed my 1930s Singer several years ago.) I've just gotta give this store five stars because quite honestly, I don't know where I'd go if he was gone. read more

Sewing machine repair man extraordinaire! If I could give this place more stars, I would. I came here because I needed two sewing machines repaired. Before coming to Gizmo Notion, I went all over the place and found that people were not knowledgeable enough about a turn-of-the-century Singer heirloom. I was uncomfortable about leaving this beautiful machine in a place where the staff was unfriendly or trying to push new machines on me (what happened at other places). As soon as I met Hussein (the wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable, warm-hearted owner), I knew that I would leave the machines to be repaired here. We took it on Saturday evening and it was ready Tuesday morning as promised. Super-fast turnaround! When I went to pick them up, he spent two hours with me telling me about my machines. I could have stayed and chatted all night. He figured out some cool tricks that I could use when installing zippers, sewing leather and other interesting facts. He doesn't even sew; he just knows machines. Hussein is gifted with how things work. He had my Singer singing again--what a beautiful sound indeed. The other machine is a Baby Lock from the 80s. I don't really care about that one, but it's a decent enough machine to fix and work with. Why buy new, when you can get it running better than it EVER did? The shop carries basic fabrics, notions and tools of the trade. He also has refurbished sewing machines and sergers for good prices. In the two times that I was there, several people came in to pick up small items that they needed for their projects. I met lots of cool people while I was in there talking to Hussein about my machines. One of these people is interested in joining a sewing circle with me. She plans on getting her 3 Singers fixed here too. The Singer was so heavy. When I was ready to leave, Hussein brought my machines to the cab for me. Service from beginning to end. I highly recommend getting your machine repaired here. It was such a bargain. For fixing both machines, it was less than a dinky machine that would be sold on an infomercial. Most importantly, remarkable service and customer care is hard to find in the city. If you have a machine that needs some TLC, come here. I can go on and on and on. Really great experience. The owner serviced our machine and got it working in great shape (including jerry-rigging a light switch that was broken and for which there was no replacement part available). When we picked it up he spent 15 minutes showing us all the features we didn't know how to use. Good selection of accessories. Best part though was what a knowledgeable, funny, craftsmanly, awesome dude he was. He should be called Dr. Gizmo. I cannot tell you how magnificent it is knowing he's there, still. I would go out of my way, no matter where his store was, to get to him. My baby (sigh!) my old Singer sewing machine, given to me by my dear mother, was totally destroyed by someone who had borrowed it. I still don't know what kind of monster she was, or how she managed to destroy parts that were not visible to the naked (or professional) eye. But, she did. I cried for the longest time. I didn't know whether Dr. Gizmo could even fix it. The machine was made in the 70s, and there are probably no more spare parts laying around. My husband brought the machine to Dr. Gizmo who cleaned it, got the new part, oiled all the moving parts, fixed the tension, and I feel somehow, lifted, yes lifted, floating on air. I would recommend Gizmo under any circumstances. What made lots of sense to me was, yes, I could have a new machine for that price, but it would be plastic. My Singer is all metal. We LOVE to support small businesses in the East Village. We are devoted. Over the LAST 5 years, what we got here was smiles, sweetness, and zero help, ZERO HELP, with solving our sewing machine problems. Were we charged anyway?..Yes. Did WE HAVE to stop by ALWAYS to "see how thing swere going?"...YES!..Always, "WAITING FOR A PART"..Then, finally, (and this was with charges) he rigged it so it worked for awhile, then stop. I love this place! Hossein is a very calm, nice gentleman who is very patient with you and wants to make sure you are absolutely happy with the service! I am a very beginner at sewing so I was very nervous when my first sewing machine broke down (it would turn on and tries to stitch but won't sew) the first thing I did was look through online to see if there was anything I was doing wrong.. When I ran out of all the options (rethreading, etc) I looked through yelp to find someone to fix it for me. for $65, and right around the block (I live in the area) my sewing machine is totally revived! When I first brought it in he plugged in the machine and looked at what it was doing with me and tried to identify the problem. he also explained what was possible and what was better to do (if one of the expensive part is totally broken, it might cost more to repair). I was very comfortable talking and listening to him and when he called for me to pick it up, we had a very nice conversation. He was totally patient and helpful, willing to answer any questions such as how to make a button hole (something I looked at in the guidebook but didn't really process by reading and diagrams) and helped me pick good threads vs. bad threads. I totally recommend this place! If not for fixing the machine/buying the material, I'd totally go in just to chat with him. amazing place! read more

I wanted to add a hook to a backpack for hanging a Camelbak. Came in here thinking I'd get a piece of fabric, but Hussein smartly suggested a stronger metal hook (2 for $6). He was so friendly and took the time to listen to my idea and then make suggestions. His best idea was taking the backpack and hook to a shoe repair guy, not a tailor, which worked out perfectly (Steve Express on 14th just east of 2nd). I knew I was in good hands as soon as Hussein began to examine my two broken machines, a serger and a sewing machine. This is a man who knows machines and knows how to listen to them. Both of my machines were fixed soon than expected and at a really fair price. I picked up the machines and they are both as good as new. The serger needed a new motor and the machine needed a new belt and to have the timing fixed. Having a good machine repairman is as important as having a good doctor for those of us who sew. i had been without a repairman since my old repairman moved deep into Brooklyn. I'm currently a first year student at Parsons and I had to make a nomadic shelter for my 3d class and I need to get materials for my project which was going to be a sweater that extends into a blanket.
