You guys, I had no idea Gladstone Bakery was still around! My mom used to get my birthday cakes here every year back in the late 60s and early 70s, because they were the best in the area. Fast forward 40 years, after I moved away for 30 years, then moved back, and I thought they'd closed and were gone. A post in my neighborhood Facebook group alerted me that they'd moved, but were still very much in business. I was thrilled! So I ordered a bunch of pastries to enjoy on Mother's Day and beyond this year, and they're fantastic, and the prices are unbelievably reasonable! My favorites are the Napoleons (flaky, creamy, and dreamy) and the eclairs (custardy and delicious), but everything we got (also cream puffs, bear claws, and rum balls) were delicious. We ordered a 2 tier cake, fit to serve 72 servings for our son's 1st birthday banquet on from this bakery through their venue partner, Metropolis. We have had over a dozen emails and a few phone call exchanges where we communicated about the details of this cake to the venue. I'm not sure if this was missed completely and she didn't forward our feedback over to the bakery or what happened but it was so off. We provided many sample pictures for themes and colors. We don't understand how the piping of the cake came out to be NOTHING like the picture we asked for, the final design that we communicated. Our cake came out looking mismatched in style and colors. You can see my photo and judge for yourself. That design we submitted and asked for were light and pastel colors, our cake on the other hand came out with a very dark colors of black, blues, purple, etc. and it did not match in style or colors with the rest of the cake which was pastel. The piping was gel and not butter-creamed as we have been told. We were never told that it would be gel. We do not like the gel look at all, and if we had known this, we would not approve. We were also told that it was possible to do the theme in buttercream but we had no final confirmation of what the bakery will actually piped from either vendors (banquet hall nor bakery). This made us nervous but we trusted in the e-mail communications and that it would be delivered to our satisfaction. We even paid an extra $1/pp to Metropolis for the top design because we were told by them that it contained high levels of "intricacies" which consisted of yellow piping stars on the side and the final design on top. We did not feel that the look of the cake was cohesive and our family agrees, the top layer even started to cave in a little when it was brought to the table. A disappointment for a cake that is over $250. Despite what the owners say, we were NOT offered a cake consultation by either vendors. We WOULD have wanted a consultation but none was offered. No one reached out. We did our part to communicate what we wanted, it just did not happen. Following our event, the owner Joe, called on 3/29 and OFFERED to make us another cake. He said that he understand that they can't bring the day back but what he can do is make us another cake and would like to give us the opportunity to tour their bakery, see their other cake designs and what they are capable of. He painted a very pretty picture and it all sounded nice. We thought he was sincere so we agreed and thanked him. On 4/7, I followed up with Joe about this make-up cake. He told me his business was swamped with Easter so to follow up in 2 weeks. This led me to believe he was still good with his word. We had planned to use the make-up cake for a family photo session and intended to post the new cake photos and update our review. On 4/19, I called, Joe RETRACTED his offer over the phone. During this time, Metropolis offered us a compensation to amend our experience and for the mishap of our event. From this, Gladstone believes because we got some money back from the banquet, they do no longer have to keep their promise on their end. In addition, Joe insisted on the phone and via e-mail that we need to FIX or REMOVE our review since we have been "taken care" of now. On 4/20, we received a very angry phone call from the co-owner /wife of Joe /PR person, Michelle. It was not even a proper phone conversation. She right out said "you guys are greedy, you want a free cake". It was like being slapped in the face. We didn't ask for this cake! They offered, and THEY BACKED OUT. It was unbelievable. It felt like talking to an aunt that you quarrel with. She called us to just yell at us. Who does that?? I stopped listening after the name-calling. It was UNACCEPTABLE AND INAPPROPRIATE the way she talked to us as if we were children. She told us we cannot interrupt her and had to keep QUIET while she was speaking, she spoke OVER us. She told us she doesn't want us as clients future or current anyways. She told us we have to take down our review and made threats. Over the next few days, they called and left messages; we are on a brink of harassment. We never waived our personal information over from Metropolis to them so if they continue to do this, it will be an issue of legal maters. Our review was for our lack of satisfaction with the cake. It is what it is. It can only be added further that after they backed out on a promise, it only reflects badly on them. We can't undo our review, just like our experience can't be undone. They need to leave it be and not freak out over a 1-star review. Every business gets feedback and have to deal with it. It's how you handle the feedback that shows your strength. How can you be in business for so long and not be able to take criticisms, think it's okay to go back on your words, and be so unprofessional and RUDE? Truly a huge disappointment. read more

This review is strictly for their customer service, more specifically Michele, the owner. Wow...just wow. I truly believe that a business can only be as good as their customer service. It doesn't matter if you make the best cakes in town, it doesn't give you the right to treat your customers like crap. I'm not going to rehash the initial issue with this bakery again, you can see Jennifer T.'s review for that. My review is about how they grossly mishandled the situation afterwards. I'll start with the false promise from the bakery to bake us a replacement cake. Note: We NEVER asked for a new cake nor reimbursement of any kind. In our mind our party was over and we were less than satisfied with the cake. So like any social media suave person would, my wife took to Yelp to share our experience. It was after her review that Joe, the owner, called my wife apologizing for the miscommunication between them and Metropolis Ballroom on our cake. He then OFFERED to bake us a new cake on the house in an effort to rectify the situation. It was offered, and we accepted. Fast forward 2.5 weeks, Joe retracted the offer after we received some compensation from Metropolis for a completely different issue we had with them. He claimed that part of that refund was from the bakery (which is false) so then we should be squared. Ok fine, we can push pass the fact that they lead us on for 2 weeks thinking they'll bake us a new cake. But then they had the audacity to ask us to remove my wife's review just because we got compensated? NO! Gladstone didn't even compensate us, it was Metropolis who did. Even so we can not and will not remove negative reviews for money, its against everything we believed in. This is where it gets good. After some back and forth in email, we said "no, we're not removing anything." The review was for the cake that we received and the lack of communication between Gladstone and Metropolis. All are facts and not false accusations as they claim. Then comes in Michele. She left us a voicemail to call her back because she wanted to help "rectify" the issues. So we did, we gave her a call back. O.M.G. I have never been on such a hostile phone call in my life. I feel like I was the business that did her wrong from the way that she was talking to us. First she did not let us talk, she just wanted to yell at us and wouldn't allow us to say anything. She raised her voice and scolded us for trying to get a word in. She proceeded to call us "greedy" because we wanted a free cake and that we should "get a life" because all we do is write reviews online. I was at a lost for words, and shocked as to what just happened. My wife hung up on the other line because she can not take the berating that was going on. I stayed on for a good 10 mins letting her finish so I can talk. But even then she barely let me get a word in before she ultimately hung up on me. She obviously had no intention of resolving anything, she just wanted to get her few insults in and call it a day. So after that, we updated our reviews to reflect that convo we had, and the next day Joe, called and left me a voicemail saying "he's trying to come to resolution to rectify the situation." Nope, not falling for that again. At this point there's nothing left to say, you said what you wanted to say and we exercised our rights to review our experience with your bakery. Not a day later, Michele called and left yet another (angry) voicemail, this time threaten us saying that if we continue to write "slanderous" review about her bakery then she will seek legal action. She ended the VM with more insults, calling my wife a "bully behind the keyboard." Enough is enough! We wrote a negative review, deal with it! In 30 years of business, can you honestly claim that you never had an unhappy customer? You guys aren't perfect, we didn't have a good experience with you, and then matters got worst, so just leave it at that. True, we didn't go in for a consultation but thats because we worked through Metropolis and were never offered one in the first place! They told us all cake communication goes through them. If communicating cake design is an issue then you need to work that out with Metropolis, it is not our problem. Just because we worked through a third party does that make us any less of a valued customer and somehow worth less because we didn't directly come to you? Is this how you treat all your vendors' customers? If so, I think they need to rethink their partnership. Like it or not, we are YOUR CUSTOMERS because we received a cake from you. My husband and I got our wedding cake here as part of the package from our venue. We couldn't have been happier with how it turned out. We had a great tasting with three different varieties, and Jennifer even accommodated my group of six interested cake-tasting sweet-tooth family members that day. Our wedding cake was ultimately delicious and exactly what we wanted. There was a bit left over and yes, I did eat it on the flight to our honeymoon. Best way to contact is to call the number here and ask for Jennifer, as I think their website etc is under development. I hope they are successful because their cakes are delicious. The wedding cake for our daughters wedding was beautiful. It was dry and flavorless however. And to add insult to injury they are not honoring their commitment to us by refusing to provide the "top layer" of the cake for their anniversary. we will be purchasing a tastier version from another bakery. I needed custom cookies ASAP and I ordered them 1 day in advance and they were the only bakery around that could squeeze me in! Aside from the minor spelling error, my experience was excellent! I never knew about this bakery and we will be ordering more custom cookies and cakes in the future because they are beautiful and delicious! read more

I have been ordering cakes from Gladstone for many years! I just recently ordered a cake for my mother's birthday and it was to die for!!! I asked for a specific cake that I had in Disney a few years ago and described how it was layered. They knew exactly what I wanted. I love working with the staff from Gladstone. If I ever have questions they are always so prompt with their calls back to me and always know how to make me feel like family. I have never had trouble with gladstone and I always recommend them to my friends and coworkers. Actually my coworkers order from them all the time, and have breakfast pastries almost once every week for staff (when we go off our diets), but we use gladstone for the special events we hold at the institution.
