First .... Let me say my rating dropped 1 star for ONE REASON - A reason the establishment had no control over. We had an early dinner / ahead of the typical crowd. I asked for and was provided seating in the shade. Our meals were outstanding. They're known for their rib eye steak. It was cooked perfectly, very tender and seasoned well. The accompaniment (baked potato & green vegetable) were good. My wife opted for an appetizer (crab and shrimp roll) which she said was delicious. Drinks were on spot and our server did a great job. Our only issue was the young buck knuckle heads seated by us. Drunk / high, loud obnoxious language that an old guy like me just didn't appreciate while having dinner with my wife who was dressed to kill. They should call this restaurant "Cream Sauce Deck" because they seem to smother everything with some version of the same sauce. That said, everything is pretty pricey in St. John and this is a little less pricey and a little more casual. We went for dinner. It was fine. I wouldn't repeat it on a trip but may be a good hang for drinks and they are apparently known for the rib eye which I didn't try. It's not bad. If you're on the fence go there. read more

We strolled up to Banana Deck one evening to sit at the bar and have some cocktails. Once sitting and enjoying the lovely view, we were seeing + smelling the great food coming out of the kitchen- in particular, their steaks! Ended up ordering perfectly cooked steaks with dressed baked potatoes+ broccoli which were SO GOOD! Hospitality was also A+! Don't pass on this spot! read more

Came back again and ordered some different items this year. Nice host at the counter who got our food and helped us check out. Everything in our bag was correct this time and we didn't have to ask for the correct food like a year ago. I wish there was more lettuce with the salad, but it's just how it is on the island it seems. This restaurant has a nice view of the bay from the dining area. The place is relaxed and casual, so we felt comfortable coming here for lunch after a bit of snorkeling. They offered a ribeye steak as one of their best items so we ordered that, as well as a burger and the fried chicken salad. The steak was well prepared, tender and flavorful. They served it with French fries and steamed broccoli. The burger was also very good. We ordered it medium well and they did a great job of cooking it so it retained its moisture. The crispy chicken salad was pretty basic. The crispy chicken was good but the salad was mainly iceberg lettuce with some shredded cheese and not much else. Our server was very helpful. She was on top of getting our drinks and meals to us quickly and she also checked back in case we needed anything. I enjoyed our leisurely lunch and the food was very good. Definitely enjoyed coming here. Good vibe, good food, good service, relatively fair price, given the cost of being in an island. I actually am embarrassed that I have never been to this restaurant before even though I've been coming to this island for over 25 years. What a surprise to me. I'm not sure I would say it's the very best steak in the island, but it was a nice steak especially for the price. One small thing that bothers me, it's in many of the restaurants now. Keep in mind I initially said it's relatively a good price. When I was here, I was charged an extra 3% for using a credit card. My dinner was over $300 thus I was given a charge of over $10 for using a credit card. Keep in mind credit cards always was a cost for a store or restaurant, but they expected that they would bring in more customers and felt that the 1-3% was just a cost of business. Now, they are charging not just all their normal expenses, but they want to transfer the credit charges to the customer. Reminds me of the airlines, remember, when you used to get a meal in the airlines, even when in coach, now they sort of charge you, unless they have to by FAA laws & hours in the air. It's just starting to feel like I'm being charged left & right now in Restaurants too. For the time being myself, and probably you, will take it. But as it is, we the customers will notice. I don't k ow how you can make chicken so tough. I asked for extra peanut sauce and I got half a shot glass full and $2.00 added to the check. The broccoli that came with it was almost raw. Someone doing the cooking here should be forced to eat this meal! The signature dessert makes no sense-- how can you wrap cheesecake in a tortilla and deep fry it and then expect someone to cut through the dough without turning the cheesecake to mush. Good service. Went for their brunch. They have make your own bottomless mimosas and Bloody Mary's of your order from the brink menu. I ordered the cheesesteak and it was average. Tons of meat and cheese, but that's it. If you're looking for veggies or grilled onion, you should skip this sandwich. The fries were delicious. This place came recommended as one of the more "reasonably priced" places in St. John, not that there is such a thing. Upon arrival, without a reservation, the hostess told us there were no tables available despite five open tables on the lower deck. Eventually, they "found" us a table. The prices at this place are simply outrageous. Lobster was $78, and a simple piece of fish was $54. To keep costs down, I ordered the Mahi sandwich for $21, not what I really wanted but nothing else was affordable. The sandwich was forced with french fries, which I do not like. To ask for anything else, a simple side salad, would add another $7 to the meal. The sandwich came with a little sliver of fish about 2 inches by 4 inches in the middle of a bun. When I dared complain to the waitress, she said "that is what our fish sandwich is" with an aloof attitude. When one orders a fish sandwich, one reasonably expects the fish to cover the entire bun. She did ask if I wanted something else, but there was nothing else on the menu even close to fairly priced so I just ate my 1/2 sandwich. After the meal, the waitress asked us if we wanted dessert, and I stated sarcastically that the 1/2 sandwich really filled me up and I could not handle anything else. One final poke in the eye was the 3% charge to use a credit card. This is the cost of doing business, Banana Deck, and should be built into the cost of the meal. When the waitress brought us the check, she chose to retaliate with her own sarcastic "it was a pleasure serving you folks tonight." As a customer, it is not my place to be her pleasure, it is the other way around. Needless to say, she got a zero tip on this transaction. This restaurant is horribly overpriced for what you get but so is everything else in this "paradise" they call St. John. My wife and I had a great time here 12 years ago and wanted to bring our daughter back to show her the island. Unfortunately, we have had more of these types of experiences here in St. John than pleasant ones. We will not be back to Banana Deck for sure and most likely St. John. UPDATE: Four days later, after reaching out to Banana Deck to share my experience, they cared so little that I have not heard back from them. We heard a lot about Banana Deck in Cruz Bay on St. John Island from other people who stayed at our hotel, so we decided to tried it. This restaurant is really busy. If one does not has reservation, one will not be able to get in. Reservation is required. Our reservation was at 7:30 pm and there was Anne of people waiting still. One has to climb a short stairs to get to this restaurant. It feels like you are having dinner at a tree house. It has a cool vibe to it. Our server Julie was really attentive and helpful. We ordered their famous Rilbeye and Shrimp Curry. We wanted a 12 oz ribeye or the 16 oz, unfortunately they ran out of 12 oz and 16 oz, so we ended up with 14 oz. The steak was well season, tender and very tasty. The price is really reasonable. The shrimp curry was also very good. The curry was not overpowering, and the shrimp was not over cooked. We were so stuffed We, but we still want to try their dessert. We wrapped up the meal with their special dessert Xango. It was amazing and big enough for 2 or more people. We actually told our server to wait for 15 to 20 min before she bring put our dessert to give us a chance to digest our dinner first.. She was gracious enough to accommodated us.. We went here for dinner and the food was good. For an app we had conch fritters they were good. I had a shrimp curry dish and my husband had the same but added fish with his the children had a Alfredo pasta and Thai dish. The food came out n decent time. I had my first pain killer it was ok not strong at all. We were so hungry I forgot to take pictures of main dishes only app. The gentle man at the bar was awesome he was very friendly and attentive. The place is small and quaint we walked in had no reservation so we sat up top looking at the rooftop of the covered canopy which wasn't he greatest. They should splatter paint over that so you'd have something to look at. The desert was yummy it banana cheesecake fried in a tortilla It was actually good. You must try.Overall nice choice. We walked up to Banana Deck for dinner at 8PM. The hostess greeted us and asked us for our party size, (party of 4) then walked around both decks looking for spots. Then returned and said, "sorry, we don't have any tables available for a party of four for the rest of the evening". We did not have a reservation but there was 3 tables available on the lower deck. I'm honestly not sure about the upper deck. If you can't get a table without a reservation, then say that up front. There's plenty of other places in Cruz Bay. Tried their brunch offering after attending Easter mass. Everyone ordered the deckfast. Great offering, plenty of food. The one weak link was the fruit. It only came with a very small piece of cantaloupe...sliced so thin you could see through it. It would have been nice to have a healthier portion of fruit. Biscuit was really good. Made reservations which were pretty easy to get ahead of time. Had decided to get a ribeye as that is what they are famous for, but I got swayed by the daily specials to change my mind. The server described a delicious seafood au gratin that just spoke to me. Upon arrival, it was just ok. The side dishes were boring plain rice and hard broccoli with no seasonings. Hubs got the snapper special with a cilantro cream sauce and salsa. His dish also had the same basic side dishes. We ate and immediately asked for the check as it felt like it was 1000 degrees on the deck. Boy was I surprised when the bill came and my dish was (sit down for this one.....) $71 and hubs was $43. My pricing seemed really extreme for what I got. I think the staff should be upfront on the prices of the specials when delivering the options. There are better food options on the island than this place and it's boujey prices. read more

Made a reservation first week May 2022. When we arrived there was no one in the restaurant. The hostess seated us in a place that was in the sun. We asked to be moved to a shaded area and were denied. It got really uncomfortable sitting in the hot sun and trying to eat our dinner. There were plenty of tables to sit at but were denied. After a day at snorkeling Maho Bay, this place was perfect for dinner, before catching the ferry back to St Thomas. Great atmosphere and view from the upper deck! Food was exactly what we were looking for! Salads, quesadilla, spring rolls, conch fritters and cocktails. A lot of in-house made sauces. Our waiter Mike, was very welcoming and knowledgeable. Location is fantastic right in the heart of Cruz bay. As a person who appreciates and eats some of the best grass fed steaks the Midwest has to offer, I can confidently say that the ribeye (not sure about grass or grain fed) I had at banana deck was the best I ever had. I've heard it's good. Went in. Sat for almost 15 minutes in the center of the (fairly small) bar. The bartender (let's call him C) never would even make eye contact. I eventually left. For me this is a terrible place. Doesn't matter if the people in the kitchen are wizards with food as it doesn't matter if service is deplorable. So for what it's worth they need to either add a 2nd bartender or hire someone who is actually capable to handle a medium volume of customers. NYC Bartenders do this all the time. Amazing steak!! So much better then that over priced pretentious "steak house" down the street. Their rib-eye is amazing! There service is excellent and the atmosphere is charming. We should have eaten there more then once. Next trip we will make sure we make reservations for at least two or three nights. read more
