I am a runner and 90% of the time I have to keep dodging soccer spectators that are standing in the middle of the track. This weekend was a bit different, both soccer teams decided to place half of their team tent blocking the 1st and 2nd lane. Therefore walkers and runners were limited to just two lanes. This was very uncomfortable for many runners. The posted signs and staff needs improvement and maybe people will start to respect the track a bit more.

Tonight's sunset is 7:15 p.m., so I figured they would close the park around 7:00 p.m. or so. My two year old and I walked about a mile to the park, arrived at 5:15 p.m., and found the park locked on 162nd. We figured it was probably open on the other side, so we walked into Hawthorne and around to 163rd, and found that it was also locked there, too. I called the city to find out what was happening with the hours, and they shared that new hours were being enforced where the park now closes at 5:00 p.m. That's great for nannies, but working parents will only have the option of using this park on the weekends. It's absolutely adorable! Wish we could have gone in!

What really stood out to me was how many teenagers I saw there. Some were playing basketball, some were hanging out in groups, and others were taking pictures together around the park. Seeing that made the whole place feel even more lively, and it showed me right away that this is the kind of spot teenagers would genuinely love spending time in. As I kept walking around, I realized there was much more to enjoy than I expected. The playground areas looked colorful and fun, the sports courts were full of energy, and the shaded spots under the trees made it easy to take a break and just enjoy the moment. In the summertime of 2024, I learned that I am still physically and mentally 18 years old, and I also learned that my prefrontal cortex is far more developed than the average 25 year old. That youthful mindset makes me appreciate places like this even more, because I can feel the same kind of excitement and creativity that teenagers feel when they are in a space that welcomes them. Edward Vincent Jr. Park is one of the most enjoyable and refreshing outdoor places I have been to in a long time, and I would highly recommend that teenagers go there. It gives them a place to hang out, take pictures, play, talk, and enjoy being themselves in a lively and open environment that feels made for them.

The high use of profanity, marijuana, and just some reckless behaviors changed everything for me about this park. A group of kids actually had a pistol out in the open, I don't know if it was real or not, but at this point it wasn't about to the activities one can enjoy but more like a safety concern now. Had it not been for the people, this park would of received at least 4 stars from me. I'm not into playing with the safety of my son, or my loved ones life. You won't find me here again.
