Me and my family have been eating here for over 20 years and I must say even though I didn't eat there in a while the food is the same as always: cheap and delicious. Most of the negative reviews are from people that aren't even Jewish. Why are eating in a kosher certified restaurant if you're not Jewish?! I'm sure there's much better non kosher Chinese places to eat but when it comes to kosher food you have to make do with what you've got. read more

Prices are good but that's about it. This was my second time ordering and the food isn't that good. All the dishes taste the same and are pretty bland. I got the Hunan chicken and it didn't have that much flavor and wasn't spicy at all like Hunan usually is. To top it all off, half way through eating i found a hair in my food. I tried this restaurant for the second time today at lunch. I ordered the cold sesame noodles. Although the restaurant was clean and the people working here were friendly, the noodles were undercooked and the sauce was quite bland. Prices were reasonable for a Kosher restaurant but based on the food, only "meh." Maybe some of the other dishes are better but the two I tried (I had an egg roll last visit) were not a flavorful as I had hoped. read more

Since the restaurant on avenue J closed down, I've been looking for a new place to satisfy my cravings for inauthentic, syrupy, overpriced kosher Chinese food. Someone told me about Glatt Kosher Family: a rundown Chinese restaurant that is sort of a takeout joint with an eat-in option. I show up and this overweight, redheaded Hasid is yelling at the cashier because someone put vegetables in the vegetable chow mein and "My wife will never eat this now, you guys do this every time!!!! Fix it and make sure there are no vegetables--we can't eat vegetables!!!!!!!" I thought, "your trousers are big enough for three people to fit inside. Maybe you should consider eating some vegetables instead of that other crap you are ingesting." I ordered some steamed vegetables which were disgusting (decided to take my own advice) I also got a tofu dish which was actually quite good. They gave me hot tea, unlike the other kosher Chinese restaurant I went to who said they only had iced Snapple. The portions were huge--but I did pay $9.00 for a plate of steamed vegetables so they better be for that price. I'd eat there again but I rather hope that I'll find another place that is better. read more

This is a great Chinese takeout. Emphasis on the Takeout. You don't want to sit there. The food is great. The Sesame Chicken is out of this world. I haven't found anything like it anywhere else in Brooklyn. It is better to make an order before you get there, otherwise you will have to wait around for quite a while. Otherwise 4 Stars. read more

Ehhh... I understand the negative reviews for this place, but at the same time I can disagree with some of the complaints. Glatt Kosher Family is good if you want Kosher TAKE OUT. It's not a place to sit down and dine like a restaurant. It is far from that. The lighting is horrible, the seats are disgusting, and it's the opposite of a sit down and eat type of place. However, the food is MEDIOCRE and CHEAP. My boyfriend is Kosher and when he wants Chinese food near his house, this is where we go. I personally do not mind when we get food from here. The sesame chicken is probably the best thing on the menu. I would not eat anything with beef in it (it's disgusting every time). I personally have not had a problem with the service here, it has been pretty efficient and friendly. Some warnings though: DO NOT GET THE SOUP. These people clearly do not know how to do soup. I'm not even kidding, its just a tub of oil. Also the wonton's in the soup suck. They taste disgusting. Also, get take out only. The best things to order: Sesame chicken and the fried rice. It's cheap and flavorful. Obviously not my favorite Chinese place but it will do when my boyfriend wants Kosher Chinese nearby his apartment. read more

The food is decent especially at their prices but the service is horrendous ! The manager tony is the rudest person in fast food service ever !! He rushes you during your phone order to the point where you forget half the stuff you wanted to get because he's constantly cutting you off by saying "what else , what else" . Every time I speak to him , I am put in the worse mood ever ! When there's a mistake on your order once it arrives and you call back , he treats the situation like it was your fault . They forgot to include an extra wonton soup in my order the last time I ordered and because I didn't want to call back to mention it that night and have to deal with his miserable attitude and a fake apology from him and also because I knew he'd simply say he'll give me credit for it instead of insisting his delivery guy bring it to me soon, I opted to overlook it. Today , I ordered for delivery and thankfully I got a nicer lady take my order. I placed about a $50 order and I decided to mention at the end that last time I ordered I was missing a wonton soup that I paid for and that I'd like it now. She said she had to ask the "manager" Tom who should be anything but. He got on the phone and told me it's not in the system that I called so I went off on him and told him why would I put myself through calling and speaking to him when he has no level of customer service and is beyond rude. I told him I don't need to lie about a $2 soup when I'm placing a $50 order, either you believe me or not. When he kept repeating himself that its not in the system , I told him no problem I'll pay for the soup , now I want to pay for it. I was happy just being able to go off on him like I did and insult him as much as he deserved. I really hope the owner of Glatt kosher family reads this and replaces him as an employee because i loathe having to speak with him almost every time I call to order and I am positive that plenty of people out there stopped ordering from this place because of how unacceptable and disgusting his phone demeanor is . read more

Worst service I ever expected to get in a restaurant. The place is very dirty and you have to wait to get your takeout food or over an hour. Be carful while handling the bag. The don't close the containers well and had it leek all over my car and then check out the pic as I was walking to my house. read more

I don't even know where to start with this poor excuse of a business. Disgusting atmosphere, disgusting food, disgusting customer service. This place is definitely roach and vermin infested--dirt and grime everywhere. The food here is pure garbage in terms of what it's made of--how do we even let that into our bodies?!--and what it tastes like. But the customer service--or lack thereof takes the cake. They are disgusting, horrible, and rude to their customers. Without us, there IS no business. They outright YELLED at us when we were having an issue with a charge they slapped on us without notifying us beforehand, something they are notorious for. We are sick and tired of taking this from them. We have been nothing but patient with them but no longer. We put in a word with the Better Business Bureau and will be taking our Chinese food cravings elsewhere. read more

Only good for take out! Food is really good and well priced. My fiance and I ordered general tso chicken and chicken with garlic sauce. No complaints. Priced very fair considering it is kosher. But the service was absolutely terrible. I asked them to please pack what what had left which was a lot and they literally gave me a container and said do it yourself. They then had the nerve to charge me a 15% service charge. I paid it but never ever sitting down here again. read more

This is probably one of my favorite Chinese food spots, the food is amazing and very good. The only reason why I'm giving it a 3 Star is because they do not know how to act, if you are going to eat inside the "restaurant" they are going to charge you automatically 15% tip for them to bring you only one dish. This is ridiculous and not professional at all especially when you eat there so often.... one time I came here I had about 41 cash only in my pocket and she bring the bill (keep in mind I'm eating alone price is for one person) my total came out to 33 dollar + 3 something for tax and on top of that 15% tip, total came out to 41.34 didn't want to use a credit card for 34 cents so I just left her the 41 dollars and she has some nerves to come tell me I'm missing 34 cents. Told her tip is my choice first of all, and second of all told her she really didn't do anything to get 15%. The cost was cheap, the food was great, and the service was awful. I ate here on a busy day, so the staff were very stressed out, but even stressed staff can be much nicer. The store was very unclean, to say it nicely, and the food took a very long time to arrive- understandable. It also wasn't a nice place to sit in, as it was loud and not too clean, but if you want a takeout place that has great prices and great food, and don't mind waiting a while or can order earlier than you really want your food, I highly recommend. read more

For a kosher place, the price is on point. sometimes you'll get meat that tastes chewy which is par for the course when it comes to cheap take out. Kosher food is usually prohibitively expensive especially meats like beef but this joint is affordable and delicious. The lunch specials are around $10 and include a dish with rice, a soup or egg roll, and a soda. No better kosher deal out there. read more

I usually go here all the time because they are amazing but not after today's service. They rush you off the phone and the guy who wears a hat all the time always has some kind of attitude. I ordered over the phone and wanted to make sure my order was right so I tried to repeat it back to him and he hung up. 08/24/2010 Abandon these leftovers! This fast-food place was recommended by several friends. I went there late-ish on a Sunday evening, and it was pretty quiet. I gave my order to the waitress and sat down at a table and waited and waited. 45 minutes later I finally walked up to the counter and asked the waiter to either serve me immediately or just let me pay for my soft drink. Then there was a flurry of apologies, and ten minutes later the waitress finally brought out my sesame chicken order. Broccoli wasn't lightly steamed; it was raw. Sesame chicken was lukewarm; all breading and grease. I never did find the chicken. Rice was rice. By the time I did get my dinner, I wasn't hungry anymore (it was almost 9:30 PM), and--although I normally take my leftovers home for a second meal--I abandoned these somewhere along the road because there is no one I dislike enough to give them to, and I certainly wasn't going to eat them myself. I've never shared the negative experiences with my fellow Yelpers whenever I've eaten at Glatt Kosher Family. This place is my go-to spot for glatt kosher Chinese. I find the food to be delicious, well-flavored, and well-prepared every time I've eaten here. The owners have been polite to me, and I give them a great deal of credit for offering kosher fare. Perhaps others do not understand that there is a language and culture barrier. This is a spot for no-frills fare, preferably to take out. Any time I've eaten in the restaurant itself, I've ordered the food as a pickup and just ate it out of the containers, thereby allowing myself the option to take the rest to go. Anyone who knows Brooklyn Chinese restaurants knows that there are the nicer places where you get waited on and where they have a pot of hot tea and fresh made wonton noodles on the table, and there are the neighborhood takeout joints. This place falls into the latter category, and as such, is NOT a date spot. You don't come here for ambiance, but for a quick bite, in Spartan, austere digs. Prices here are extraordinarily reasonable and on par with similar non-kosher spots (before you freak out and start oying, the meat indeed all comes from Alle/Meal Mart. The fact that it's an operation run and operated by a hard-working immigrant family, with the strict supervision of an on-site mashgiach, may help to keep costs down). I, for one, do happen to enjoy the novelty of eating a satisfying kosher meal without feeling ripped off. You can't go wrong with $7.20 luncheon specials and with $9.50 dinner combinations. The Veal Lo Mein, only $6 for a pint, is amazing, with napa cabbage and roast veal that eerily resembles the other white meat, the one which American Jews of a less frumme persuasion go nuts over every December 25 in their fried rice and soup. The only menu item I wish was drastically different is the spare ribs. Instead of serving veal spare ribs, they serve gargantuan Flintstone-style beef ribs, which simply don't match well with the red Chinese spare rib sauce. Veal ribs are a far better vehicle for that sauce and quick-broiled preparation, as the beef ribs remained overly chewy and slightly dry from broiling. The beef on a stick has a pleasant orange flavor, and you get a very generous helping of meat for just $6 and change. Don't expect good service, or a smile, or house-made wontons here (they serve instead an individually wrapped OU brand of wonton noodles), but do expect yummy, delicious, and very reasonably-priced Cantonese-style takeout fare. read more
