I had ruled out the upstream O2 sensor, catalytic converter (both new), MAP sensor, and fuel injectors. I explained all of this to Matt before bringing the car in. He assured me they could perform deeper diagnostics with their equipment. After dropping off the car, Matt called and told me they had "confirmed" exactly what I had already told them, and that the next step would be pulling spark plugs--for an additional fee. At that point, I decided to go elsewhere. What I don't understand is why I was still charged the full $85 diagnostic fee, plus a $4 hazardous materials fee and $3 shop supply fee. Plugging a car into a diagnostic scanner does not generate any hazardous waste--no fluids are drained, no chemicals are used, and no parts are replaced. There's nothing about a basic scan that would justify a hazardous materials charge. That kind of fee typically applies when disposing of things like oil, coolant, or other regulated waste, none of which occurred here. In the end, I paid $92, wasted time and gas, and learned nothing new. The most concerning part was Matt admitting he didn't even know spark plugs would need to be checked as part of further diagnosis.

What really impressed me was that they managed to get everything finished around 4:00 PM, which gave me enough time to make the long drive all the way back to San Francisco that same day. The repair wasn't cheap, but after driving the car home, I feel it was worth every penny. The entire drive back was smooth with absolutely no issues, and honestly, the car feels even smoother than it did before. Had my 2018 Audi A7 aligned at…read moreanother shop and ran perfectly, except the camber was off and needed an aftermarket camber kit to fix this. I was told this by multiple alignment shops. Called here and owner told me other shops didn't know about German cars and HE could fix the camber without an after market camber kit. Took it to him right away. Called to tell me the alignment was done. When I show up, the camber is still off, but he tells me not to pay attention to the red on the paperwork, that it's fixed and according to Audi specifications and tolerances. Ask him for those numbers from Audi. Told me he'd get them to me and never did. Then I noticed the alignment paperwork says "America's Tire". Turns out he: 1. Said he could fix the camber without aftermarket parts 2. Took it to America's Tire and got a standard $89.95 alignment and charged me $165 3. Didn't fix the camber 4. Lied by saying the camber was within Audi specs when America's Tire who actually did the alignment said that wasn't true. 5. Then lied and said he never said he could fix the camber without a camber kit (if this was true I never would've brought in my car) 6. The alignment they did made the alignment worse, now it pulls to the right and the steering wheel is crooked Now I have to pay the original shop I took it to do a second alignment to fix what these guys messed up. Owner did have the decency to refund my money, but all this could've been avoided had he been honest (or knowledgeable) enough to not promise to do something he couldn't do.

The dealership quoted me $3,000 for the repair. Before spending that kind of money, I decided to get a second opinion from TK Auto Repair -- and I'm so glad I did! They carefully inspected the car and found that the problem was actually a damaged AC drain hose. They explained exactly what was wrong and told me to go to an auto parts store to purchase the replacement hose. I brought the part back, and they installed it for me. And here is the unbelievable part: they didn't charge me anything. $0. They spent a significant amount of time diagnosing the problem, checking the car, and installing the hose, and they still refused to charge me for their labor. The mechanic was also incredibly hardworking and careful. He was literally kneeling on the ground and working on my car the entire time, taking the job very seriously and making sure everything was done properly. The difference between being quoted $3,000 at the dealership and paying $0 at TK Auto Repair says everything about how honest these guys are. But our daughter found the car online and absolutely had to have it--so we made the weekday drive out. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by the owner, who was very friendly and even took us out for a test drive. The car was in great shape, especially considering it's over 10 years old. We worked with the owner's brothers, Vic and Mel, for financing. I hadn't asked ahead of time what documents were needed, so we came a little unprepared. Thankfully, Vic and Mel were extremely patient as we gathered everything they needed and walked us through the process. Overall, it was a great experience--and the best part?
